As a guy who had long hair for 20 ish years. Completely new to hair styling and products. I’m really glad videos like this exist. My dad just had short army cut so no styling. Just got the product my grandpa used thinking it worked great for him. It’s brylcreem. It works pretty well for me. Hoped to gain more knowledge from here. Thank you very much. It was very enlightening for me.
I have always dried my hair with a blow dryer first, with just a bit of hair tonight, and applied the product at the end. Def going to experiment on changing the order and skipping the tonic
My barber suggest Gibbs beard oil for my beard one day. Decided to try their styling clay. Awesome scent. Awesome hold, but still soft enough I can put a little water on my hands and style it anyway I want mid day. Water will dissolve it immediately but I wash mine everyday because of what I do for a living. I use their body/hair wash as well. Gibbs is a Colorado company and 95% of their products smell amazing.
Styling my hair on and off I've found that a wax based pomade, cream or paste are the juggernauts of product. Almost any style can be achieved, maintained, and reworked with relative ease without the need of some crazy haircare regiment. Clean hair, a half decent brush, and slightly less product than you THINK you need and you can work wonders with your hair.
@@mattwolfen do you like the brand American Crew? I got talked into a little bottle of one, last time I was in the barber haha. It's a styling pomade, I've got thin/wiry and soft hair if that means anything
I use Johnny Slicks oil based pomade and it is the best product I have ever used for my hair. ( I have long hair) Plus it's made by former Marines. Personally I can't stand water/cream based pomade, they wash out easy but omg they clclump up so much and get hard, it makes it impossibly to Bru my hair lol.
I use wax powder. I got into it as my barbers' used it once so I went and looked online. I comes in a container that looks a little bit like a salt/pepper pot and you shake the powder on to your hair and it congeals as wax, from where you style it. You can also shake it into your hand if you want to avoid getting some of it down your top or on your face (that's probably the only drawback) but I don't find that method as effective and it brushes/cleans off easily anyway. I like it because I've been going for the matte quiff kind of look for years, almost as if I don't have any product in, but have never really managed it successfully until now! I used to use something called Fish Paste putty but it was discontinued. The brand is still around but they don't seem to stock the particular type of product I liked anymore but that worked quite well too.
I prefer pomade - it has to have a stronger hold and be moisturizing. As I’ve gotten older, my skin is much drier than it used to be. So now my fine hair dries out if I use gel too much, which used to be my go-to styling aid. Not all pomades are created equal. Some are more like clays and those do NOT go well with my hair. Pomade is the only thing that acts like the gel I used to use, but without the drying effects of alcohol they put in gel.
I’ve tried using gels that come with those small wands like mascara applicators, but they get stuck in my hair, and the gel isn’t applied thick enough to hold my hair all day. I finally found the littlllextra neatfix hair finishing stick, and it works so smoothly-seriously, it has made all the difference. I can make any hairstyle with its help, and it gives my hair a very clean look!
Long hair that you want to reposition all day? Brylcreem or a similar cream. Apply it, then lightly rinse to reduce the shine. The wind is often 30+mph here and with a repositionable cream you can fix it throughout the day.
i got longish curly hair which means sometimes it goes wacky as hell. Do you have reccomendations for what i could use to just style back into normal looking without having any gel/shine look
@@niamrehman4251 you get leave in conditioners or mouse which adds a bit of hold but not too much. Try out different brands and see what works for you.
Saltwater spray is great to get more texture in your hair, even sometimes enough for shorter hair or you normally just want a messy hairstyle without a sticky product. Personally I comb my hair with some let it dry naturally or use a blow-dryer if available then apply a product.
Sea salt spray is what I'm currently using, but I'm going to also try a paste. I like to wet the hair (down to the roots), and then towel pat it, and then spray a good amount of it in the hair, and rub it in with the fingers, and then blow dry the back forwards with a comb so as it's in check; blow dry the front backwards with a comb so as the fringe goes back properly. Then bend over upside down and dry the rest (much quicker, and doesn't over-dry parts of the hair, and gives more volume), mostly in the direction of backwards and to the side. Then when it's dry and in the right spot, I do like, 2 sprays from far enough away (don't weight it down with wetness) and don't touch it for a while. Currently my hair has gotten too long for it to hold where I like it, so I'll give myself a haircut soon. Usually it holds better. It does stay off the face a lot nicer than it does without it though, so it's better than nothing. I like sea salt spray in how it feels like there's pretty much nothing in the hair, it's just salt. You can also put your fingers in it, and it doesn't break the hold per se, it's just like, grit in there. The REAL winning combination though, is sea salt spray and chalk powder! chalk powder is incredible, that's where it's at. So much more hold. It's like getting in the ocean, drying off and then getting back in the ocean 50 more times. Although I suppose that is essentially what I do when climbing and fixing my hair a bunch of times. Adds up. Going to have to experiment with this lol. Edit: Wait... hair powder is a thing. Okay fuck the paste, I'm going to try hair powder! and sea salt spray works as a great pre-styler for that, so... this is all falling into place nicely. I like hair that you can run your fingers through, and feels like almost nothing, just more grippy on itself, and matte and dry, and like there's nothing in it. When you add a lot, you can't even get your fingers through the hair, so it's scalable and pretty cool. Also easy to get it into the hair, and hard to fuck up. Some hair products are like trying to disperse a strong glue throughout your hair. Sorry for all my typing, it's how I organise my thoughts. But maybe you could try the same if sea salt isn't quite enough hold for ya, particularly if your hair gets a bit longer. Oh wait you use a product after the sea salt... I see.
@@Siberius- Very informative. Yeah I use a product on top of sea salt sometimes when my hair is too long/thick or I want a stronger hold. But when it's newly cut and short I usually just need the sea salt. I mix my own spray too, using Cerulean seas salt.

Then after trying that I also want to try "Kevin Murphy Powder.Puff 14g", because it's apparently better to some degree, but mostly because it's really cute. Just more expensive.
@@Siberius- I simply add water and sea salt crystals into reusable pump spray bottles that used to hold something else before. I clean them out, add fresh water and just "go on the feel" on how much salt, to get a strong hold and gritty texture use a lot of salt, you notice when it doesn't dissolve as easily anymore, then it's salty! Well tbh I just happened to have them at home for cooking and I tried them they worked awesome. And it sounds fancy 😉😎 I used to buy premade salt spray from the hairdresser but they took like $10-20 a bottle! And it's really just water, sea salt and some coloring in some to make it look blue. I figured making my own was better. I've never tried hair powder, I use wax, gel, pomades, and paste. I like pomades quite a bit even if it's s bit greasy.
@@nattvaktenphotography - Oh so you just make the water as salty as you possibly can within reason lol. Only stop when it won't properly let you continue. That sounds pretty salty. Good thing salt isn't too expensive. Cerulean does sound fancy, yes. Also reminds me of Pokémon. HMMMMM... yea nah, you've inspired me to create my own sea salt spray! as a pre-styler before powder. I think I remember people adding a bit of certain oils or something to their concoctions, but my hair is short enough that my own natural oils can easily do the job. Just like how people with straight, regular thickness, non-ponytail-length hair don't need conditioner under normal conditions with regular reasonable weather. Actually no, seems 1 table spoon per cup of water is the baseline, so I'll try that and then probably step it up. Then yea a bit of argon oil or some shit seems to be ideal lol. If I must. I should get jojoba oil, because it's good for the nails. 👌
I use a clay, cream and a pomade. I use them separately for different reasons depending on what I am doing or wearing for the day. The clay is for super hard hold, the cream is for a ultra wet look, and the pomade is for a combination of both the clay and the cream. I do not ever use a blow dryer.
A category of how to easy you can style would also be good, I personally find hairspray the easiest and quickest way since it has a very low skill floor.
I used many different oil based pomades for a few years with strong to extreme hold. It was a great experiece in the matters of hold and restyleability, but you must be aware. Some of those only wash out with the help of oil, or special shampoos, a few just don't wash out. I never found anything water based even close to their styling possibilities, but still got rid of them because of their inconvenience.
I think there are also two types of straight hair. 1a) Thin: What you expected. The most common for a lot of people. 2b) Hard: Common for Asian people. Best way to explain this is that if you cut your hair short, it’ll start to stand up and you look like a porcupine. I have this problem. Clay/wax tends to work to flatten the hair on your scalp, but it never last for a whole day, so ultimately people like me have to deal hair that sticks out like needles.
When I started to slick my hair I found suavecito and cool grease pomade is always the best way to go water based pomade is better easy to wash off and dosent damage your hair
I have long hair and now I'm about to choose the hair product but in last part of the video you mentioned almost everything except long hair. What about them? What would you recommend?
I find that combination of products works for me. A common problem is that people use to much product in their hair & it either gets to heavy & falls down or gets hard like a helmet. Using a dimes amount of gel & then touching up lose hairs with some flexible hold hairspray works for me. Of course if I'm going for a pompadour, since I have straight hair, I usually will use a volume increasing shampoo & then a polmade or fiber
Definitely would love to see beard content from Antonio. It may not be something he doesn't personally wear, but I still value his opinion on these things
Thanks for the info, through lots of trial and error I've found that Fiber works best for me, but it took a long time to get there. Hopefully this can save others the struggle (and drawer of non used product...lol)
What do you recommend for someone who plays indoor sports. My sweat will drip down the face and get into the eyes. Which product won’t sting my eyes when this happens?
There is product Mg5 wax in market it's cheap and better than any other products It's best for every type of hair and especially when you have long handlebar or long beard it's for both and one of the best I've been using it since 6 years
I have that stubborn straight hair, the one that no matter what you do it just wants to face straight forward. Ive tried gel, wax, pomade, grease, the last thing im considering is gorilla glue lmao.
Loved the video but there is one really important factor that I would had loved if you talked about. (Sweat resistance) example: gel becomes de most disgusting paste after sweating while wax can hold for days no problem
If I want a product keeps my parted thick, straight hair in place thats majes my hair look natural without being too stiff and has a little bit of shine what would you recommend? Thanks
Have you tried blumaan by Joe? He has a great arrangement of products. My favorite is the fifth sample. High hold low shine. I get the volume I need with a natural finish.
Thanks for this! now, the fashion bit I can do (or so I claim), but hair products (well, hairstyling in general, really) were always a bit of a mystery to me - this cleared up a few things!
Never been a fan of the barber shop to much to maintain and have to keep going back every week to keep it in shape. When I had hair I did the slickback look, water or gel is all you need, but I tinkered with the style for over 20 years and found out that using oil puts a nice weight/volume to hair, what oil you might ask, Coconut oil works good and if you mix it write to wet hair you dont need much and it saves a ton of money on products.
I use a clay, cream and a pomade. I use them separately for different reasons depending on what I am doing or wearing for the day. The clay is for super hard hold, the cream is for a ultra wet look, and the pomade is for a combination of both the clay and the cream. I do not ever use a blow dryer.
I had to check my playback speed. It felt like 1.25 or 1.5, but was just normal. I'm fine with the speed, and listen to most podcasts at the faster speeds, but just wasn't ready for it on TH-cam. Great content as always. Although, I feel that I've aged out of your target demographic. I'm roughly the same age s you.
Ok. I'm a shower before bed guy with a flat top. I have a terrible pillow head spot that is hard to stand back up before going to work. Any recommendation for something that will stand it back up without me having to wash my hair in the morning? The area in question is short if that helps.
How about fine long hair (neck-length), parted in middle? For front 'bangs'/separated sections to keep out of your face. Something 'light' (medium might be okay), not shiny, not overly greasy, easy to wash out?
I know this is a bit late. I recently used wax and it can be quite challenging to wash off but what I found is it’s easier to get rid of it by using conditioner first then shampoo after.
i have thick, coarse, wavey and curly hair likely type 2C? im looking for something that will allow me to comb my hair so its straight and hold it straight for styling. anything out there able to do that?
Are there hair oil for styling ? I have mid to long hair. I like to wear it back a bit. But I don’t want hard hair. I don’t want pasty hair. I want it natural but style able to throw back and stay. So I was thinking of some sort of hair oil meant for styling? If that’s even a thing ?
A curl cream would probably get you where you want to go if you've got any sort of wave to your hair at all; I'm 2C and it's what I use. Bumble and Bumble is a primarily women-oriented brand but their Curl Conscious product is really good at that. Less than you think you need applied to wet/damp hair and put where you want it to go.
What's the material that is not oily/greasy at all, can hold just for a few hours, when I comb thru hair it won't leave anything on my comb, when I touch my hair/head it won't leave anything on my hands, and easy to wash off with shampoo(but not water) ? Thanks
I’m trying to go for a natural slicked back hair style. I’m thinking Obi-wan Kenobi in attack of the clones or Christian Bale from the batman movies. Does anyone have any product suggestions?
I would maybe say that pomades might not always be the best with heat...but then again I only use water based pomades when I do use pomades. EDIT: I would not recommend oil based pomades. I had to use shampoo twice to get it out of my hair.
as someone who grew up in a haitian-american household the way you pronounced pomade hurt the way we pronounced it was po ( like kung fu panda) mad ( like angry)
Scent and quality of product are two attributes I value too. Not going to buy a product that smells bad. You can tell the difference between cheap and quality products. Cheap textured paste feels like cement.
I stopped using hair products awhile back because I didn't like how "crusty" it made my hair feel and I liked it when my girlfriend would run her fingers through my hair and it also left a residue when she did when I had product in. Do some of these products like mousse, creams, or even fiber have a solution that doesn't do that? It holds but if you touch it it still feels natural and not crusty or greasy?
Not really, if it has hold at all, running fingers through it will break the hair apart from the product and will loosen the hold and the product will come off on the fingers
I find cream doesn't harden my hair much at all. Maybe for the first hour of so after applying, but I usually comb it enough throughout the day just to keep it tamed that everything smooths out by the time I see my lady after work. I'm pretty happy with the Old Spice creams actually. Economical and they smell great.
All i do is dress with joggers and slides and hoodies I wanna dress better when affordable store do you think I can stick to so I can dress better and does polo work?

I use : Pomade for a shiny slick back
Sea salt and clay for curls .
And only clay for middle part.
My hair is wavy btw.
The one I use for a pompadour is ace high’s high shine black cat pomade. It is the beast pomade I have ever used.
This was a great video, definitely going to have to check out more of your stuff! Thanks for all the advice and tips!
I know you don't have a beard but please do this for beards. Semper fi
I'll add this to my list. Thanks for the suggestion.
Definitely would love to see beard content from Antonio. It may not be something he doesn't personally wear, but I still value his opinion on these things
@Real Men Real Style Beards deserve style, too!
Semper fi
OMG YES PLEASE
Thanks for the info, through lots of trial and error I've found that Fiber works best for me, but it took a long time to get there. Hopefully this can save others the struggle (and drawer of non used product...lol)
This guy never blinks, thanks for the info
@@lawan9128 why did you need to ruin my day internet stranger...
U r absolutely welcome buddy
Very educational! Excellent video, thank you.
What do you recommend for someone who plays indoor sports. My sweat will drip down the face and get into the eyes. Which product won’t sting my eyes when this happens?
Out of putty, clay, and mud, which do you think is the best. Also what brands do you recommend? Thanks.
There is product Mg5 wax in market it's cheap and better than any other products
It's best for every type of hair and especially when you have long handlebar or long beard it's for both and one of the best I've been using it since 6 years
I have that stubborn straight hair, the one that no matter what you do it just wants to face straight forward. Ive tried gel, wax, pomade, grease, the last thing im considering is gorilla glue lmao.
Pomade is the way to go fella's.. use probably three fingers of it and rub it in hair. Last all day and holds good and can keep styling it..
My barber introduced me to a fiber pomade by Reuzel. He put it in my hair after my last cut and I really liked it and picked some up.
Same here
saaame
I used to have that stuff
thanks for a great video. what about texturising creams though? did you cover those?
Thanks for this! now, the fashion bit I can do (or so I claim), but hair products (well, hairstyling in general, really) were always a bit of a mystery to me - this cleared up a few things!
My favorite is matte finish pomade.
OOOOH! So that's cool 😎 guys secrets! 😲 Let me test what product & method will work best for me, thanks. 😊 👍
I wash my hair with dawn dish soap works great too
I use a clay, cream and a pomade. I use them separately for different reasons depending on what I am doing or wearing for the day. The clay is for super hard hold, the cream is for a ultra wet look, and the pomade is for a combination of both the clay and the cream. I do not ever use a blow dryer.
I've needed this guide for years 😂
DUDE YOU'RE THE BEST ACTUALLY
Me I'm using pomade, the best! for simply it's old fashioned and classic
Strong Ty Pennington vibes
Great salesman, makes me wanna buy that hair dryer lol
Just realized, you forgot about powders, they are also very common and have a strong hold
Go for the 50s greaser look and brylcreem it
How about fine long hair (neck-length), parted in middle? For front 'bangs'/separated sections to keep out of your face. Something 'light' (medium might be okay), not shiny, not overly greasy, easy to wash out?
I know this is a bit late. I recently used wax and it can be quite challenging to wash off but what I found is it’s easier to get rid of it by using conditioner first then shampoo after.
i have thick, coarse, wavey and curly hair likely type 2C? im looking for something that will allow me to comb my hair so its straight and hold it straight for styling. anything out there able to do that?
I suggest Aleppo's soap in the place of shampoo...
Awesome vid. I’ve been looking for something like this🙏🏼
I have curly 3b/3c looking for something to hold the sides of a pompadour but let's the curly fall down on the top
Hey boss, do you wash your hair everyday to get the products out?
Hanz de fuko makes the best styling products
What's the material that is not oily/greasy at all, can hold just for a few hours, when I comb thru hair it won't leave anything on my comb, when I touch my hair/head it won't leave anything on my hands, and easy to wash off with shampoo(but not water) ? Thanks
My hair is starting to thin a little in the front. Its not bad but slightly noticeable. Is there any product that will give my hair a fuller look?
Only hair fibers
I use Dove Men+Care Thick and Strong shampoo to make my hair look fuller
love this video i subscribed thank you❤
That Outershirt looks great, where is it from?
Olive oil on a comb does the same thing. And repairs dry scalp
Nice video! Where did you get the jacket from?
I can only imagine the amount of chuckles that occur while filming the B-roll for these types of videos, lol.
What kind of jacket/ over shirt is that? It’s cool
Do you have a video for different hair brushes?
I’m trying to go for a natural slicked back hair style. I’m thinking Obi-wan Kenobi in attack of the clones or Christian Bale from the batman movies. Does anyone have any product suggestions?
I wonder which product causes the least damage to the hair
Osis Flexwax is the best! Tried so many before.
that's why my hair looks terrible, i use Pomade water-based and hair spray what I need is clay
I would maybe say that pomades might not always be the best with heat...but then again I only use water based pomades when I do use pomades.
EDIT: I would not recommend oil based pomades. I had to use shampoo twice to get it out of my hair.
I love medium hold high shine pomade
Is there a matte pomade, or should I use fiber? Also I’m thinning on top
GREAT JOB!!!!
God sent off a video, thanks.
This video was made to sell that hairdryer and nothing else
Yeah. It offers no real information except that there's different kinds of products haha
can women also use this hair dryer. i mean, since they usually have way more hair..
as someone who grew up in a haitian-american household the way you pronounced pomade hurt the way we pronounced it was po ( like kung fu panda) mad ( like angry)
I’m part French and I agree lol
Wax is typically medium shine, not high shine.
Pompadour for life
what a video this info is dimmond!
So out of all these products which one actually works for coily hair ? None ? Unless the coily hair is texturized or permed I’m sure
Does clay works for men with long hair ??
Scent and quality of product are two attributes I value too. Not going to buy a product that smells bad. You can tell the difference between cheap and quality products. Cheap textured paste feels like cement.
Glad I found this video
what is best product for flat top?
@@MCgrease08 Yes exactly this. I was thinking of a cream but didn't know if they would dry enough to not be greasy. Thanks for the feedback!
@@John_Conner222 I would recommend saltwater spray, can make it a little dry feeling, but no residue or grease.
Use Vaseline or ky when with the girlfriend and you won't need any additional lubrication
All i do is dress with joggers and slides and hoodies I wanna dress better when affordable store do you think I can stick to so I can dress better and does polo work?
Also, write better.
