Thinking about digging out my Singer 360 after 25 years and surfed looking for videos! You make me believe like I can do it again!!! Granddaughter's Christmas Stocking, here I come!
Thankyou Diana, it is a long time since you made this video, but it was still relevant for me in 2022, for my relatively new to me USM. I made one today.
Hi Diana, I pulled out my LK150, dusted it off, surfed you tube for instructors and found you...you certainly have the gift of teaching!!! I have learned so much, in just a few days, which has built my confidence, tremendously...and I want to send my "thanks"....I must confess, I dont understand why its necessary to use waste yarn before starting with the main yarn...
OMG!!!! What a GREAT IDEA!! I know I'm just using "waste yarn" but it could have been used in a project instead. I'm going to my room now and making me a cast on rag before I start another project. :)
La mejor manera de comprar una máquina de tejer es encontrar un distribuidor de máquina de tejer en su área. También puede buscar máquinas usadas en buenas condiciones.
I bought this machine finally and it's giving me so much problems .. I wanted to know when the machine is assembled there is gray foam where the green bars are .. In the instructions it doesn't say anything about removing it but I think it's the problem .. Can you advise me if it should stay on or take it off .. ??? 179
I love your table, or bench, can you please tell me where i can get one....My machine is on a regular kitchen table and it tries to move with the carriage...love your videos
I made one with cheap red heart yarn and found the bind off too thick and latches were getting caught on it, even after I "killed" the fabric with a steam iron (recommended so it lays flat). So I made another with sport weight acrylic, killed it so it was thinner at the bind off, and I am happy with it. To kill acrylic knitting: steam iron on low end of steam settings. Lay fabric flat, then lay a wrung out wet terry cloth over it and press 2-3 seconds only. It will "sink" when it is killed.
Hi Diana! Love your videos - I just got a USM and have made a cast-on rag - very clever. I've been searching for the Omega no. 5 cord but Hobby Lobby no longer sells it, but they sell one called Artiste #5 Nylon Thread. Do you think this is a comparable product? I can't seem to find anything close to no. 5; I have only found no. 2 or 3. What would you use as a substitution?
I know these are great videos on u tube but half the people never answer your ?Google bond america & in upper left u will see products, projects, (patterns), videos, & help under their logo. There are 21 or 22 videos from setting up the machine to tips to help you.The Bond Lady will teach you about everything you will need to know about this machine. Good Luck All. hondagirl1500
If you make this, I made some decent hooks to hang weights from rigid floral wire, and I thought about making some yo k2tog holes because that wire may not easily insert to regular knitting.
I have a brand new, straight from the box machine like this one and hate it!! I spent days trying to "make friends" with it and in the end - to preserve my sanity - I packed it away. Anyone living in Canada who's prepared to pay shipping costs is welcome to it.
+Pople BackyardFarm they only take minutes to make.....Diana demos above.... I will say that I make mine with #10 tension so the loops are large....then I turn backwards to use, just laying the purl loops over the needles, weighting to hold on as I go....I do use the pickup tool once in awhile, but honestly don't need it often. .... the large loops also fit both standard and bulky machines without having to have 2 different sizes....
Hi Diana, I just got gifted the same machine, and Looked in you tube so the machine is ready to be used, but unfortunately I still not using. I am trying to understand what is that I am doing wrong.. could you please help me? Thank you, Ruti
The USM is a difficult machine to use. Make sure you have a smooth, somewhat slippery yarn like Caron Simply Soft. Make sure there are no bumps or rough spots on any of the plastic; if there are, sand them off with emery cloth; make sure you wax the parts thoroughly as shown in the instructions. Do not judge machine knitting as a hobby by this machine - USMs are very basic and inexpensive and do not have many of the features that make for smooth knitting. Since yours was a gift, it might not be in good working order.
@@dianaknits thank you very much Diana, actually the machine it’s in great conditions. It’s just the needles won’t move even without yarn. That’s too bad! I was very happy, because even though it looks like a toy it’s still a machine and you can take it anywhere! Well I will try a different yarn as you suggested. Thank you!
If you are looking for a replacement vinyl hem, I found them on knittingtoday.com for $10. Before getting the replacement I used heavy packaging tape to stick the broken pieces together, I never thought of making this, good idea.
The USM does not come with a cast-on comb. It has a vinyl hem which is easily damaged and wears out rather quickly. The cast-on rag is simply a piece of knitting you can place on the needles, then run a row of sturdy thread, and you have a place to hang weights and begin your knitting. A replacement vinyl hem is, I believe, over $30; a cast-on rag is cheap because you can make it from leftover yarn. The hem is wide, but you can make different widths of the rag for convenience.
Diana Sullivan I always suggest making one or two in full width and then a couple in half width. You do not have to use all the stitches unless you need them. Then make sure you make the stitches as big as possible as it is much easier to slip over the needles than to use the pickup tool. I do not use the top row as many demonstrations do, Turn to the purl side, slip 2 or 3 'purls' over the same number of needles, then hang weight to control them....continue hanging and weighting to the end of the row, knit one row of ravel cord, then change to fashion yarn...you can connect with ewrap, open, crochet, whatever kind of edge you like. I have moved almost exclusively to open cast on as I like the look better when you finish, turn garment around, hang first row of fashion yarn back on and finish with the same treatment as my hems...
@biloxipinto62 How to Change/replace a needle on the Bond/ISM/USM: Put the needle that needs to be replaced in HOLD position. And push out a few other needles as well on either side of it. Now LIFT the needles up so that the green plastic bar pops up. Simply change the needle and then put the green bar back gently.
You lost me at "thread up with scrap yarn and knit a few rows...." How do you do that part? I thought this was a rank newbie video, a followon to the how to assemble the machine video that I was watching
Wow! Thanks for all of your videos. They are so clear and easy to follow. Next step is getting the bravery to do it!

Great video! Can you do this without the weighted hem? I have a Knitomat Custom without a weighted hem cast on comb.

No. I use Omega nylon cord.
I do use the elastic that comes with the USM with the USM hem only.
If you make this, I made some decent hooks to hang weights from rigid floral wire, and I thought about making some yo k2tog holes because that wire may not easily insert to regular knitting.
Thank you for your great teaching on this. You are helping me so much on my new machine.
Love this tip. Thank you
can you please explain how to change out the needles on this machine please

How much would you want for it? Do you know approximate shipping costs? I just started knitting again and would love to try this out.
