- While getting started on a project with the Bond Ultimate Sweater Machine (USM), Lea-Ann from Knitting Today ran into some issues.
-getting started with the waste yarn (open) cast on.
-troubleshooting the jams.
It was an impromptu recording, but hope it helps someone with the same problems!

It says to use two hands of even pressure in the instruction manual. And that does make a difference
Thank you. I just bought one on eBay and got it in the mail. I'm ready to cry, your video has calmed me and I'm ready to give it a go again ❤️
Feel free to ask questions if you still have problems.
Oh my I remember when I first used this. I was so annoyed but once I understood it’s quirks I was able to knit quite quickly :)
Thank you for this video because I have had my machine for years and only used it a few times and always had issues with it and mine did the same and I could not figure it out and this makes perfect sense
Thank you! I just got one recently and it kept jamming. The trouble shooting in the tutorial from the company wasn't giving enough details and this was just what I needed
Glad it was helpful!
I've had Bond machines (original and ISM) since the 1980s and never had any problems with them (that weren't operator error, LOL) until I was given one of the newer-style USM carriages, as shown on your video. It's so fussy and temperamental about everything - yarn type and tension, where it's held, how it's pushed; I call it the snoephlayke carriage.
I do use it when I have a lot of yarn changes to make within a piece. The annoyance of repeatedly dismantling the wire bail carriage for each change can be greater than having to coax and bribe that snoephlayke carriage!
Isn't it amazing how the carriage change made such a difference?
Good video. Thank you for sharing. The USM has never been a favorite but I always loved the Bond!
can somebody tell me how long is this machine??? I cant find this information no ware.
Can anyone help me out? I'm trying to use this confounded thing and every now and then after a few rows of knitting perfectly fine, I move the carriage across and it just drops everything without knitting any new stitches. This is extremely infuriating and making me consider giving up on machine knitting entirely
Watch where your yarn is sitting in the guide of the carriage. The knitting will drop when the yarn is NOT in the guide so it isn't being placed on the needle before the latch closes and it is pulled back. The trick is to have just enough tension on the yarn while bringing the carriage back to the first needle. Too loose and you get a loop at the edge and/or the yarn can come out of the guide. Too tight and you pull the first stitch too tight and/or lift that first needle so it catches on the carriage. You want to pull back just enough to take up the slack as you move the carriage back to the needles.
Sounds tricky, but after a few rows it becomes automatic and you won't even think about anymore!
I have the same problem with my cheap fashion knitter. So frustrating I put it back in the box and left it in my craft room. After seeing this machine behave the same way I'm motivated to try it again to see if lifting the back of the carriage works.
Keep me posted! I'd love to get you get it working. Lea-Ann@knittingtoday.com
I can hear by the sound of the needles rubbing on the keyplate that the keyplate hasn’t been waxed. It needs waxing before you start knitting with them, otherwise it will be very difficult to knit with.
If you’re using an extension kit with the USM, the table really has to be flat. To keep the bed joins from separating. Just stuff some green cards or something under the back of the bed.
This was never a problem with the original and Classic as the extension attached at the end and the machine doesn’t sag at the end because that is where the clamps are.
Appreciate all your suggestions... There truly was something wrong with this machine. I've used the Bond since 1983. This particular machine has manufacturing flaws that were touchy to overcome. It is the first time in many, many Bond machines I've taught on that has ever had these issues. I published the video in hopes it would help others.
@@Knittingtoday Fair enough. 🙂. The USMs were alright at first until around 2006. They made a lot if changes, like adding sponge under the needles and the needles themselves we’re changed. They were pretty shoddy after that. The old ones worked fine. The original UK Bonds were still better quality though.
Opening the key plate allows you to SEE the problem. Also, by pushing the carriage from the side, you are causing problems. Place your hand on top of the carriage when you push it. The weight of your hand will keep it from jamming.
Thanks. I've had this make of machine since 1985. This carriage isn't cooperating no matter what, even with both hands lightly guiding.
The problem was a backward/forward issue, not a keyplate issue.
It looks like you were new at working with the USM. Boy, do I remember my early days knitting on the USM. Be diligent, and it will pay off in the end. I make many afghans, blankets, scarves, shawls and socks on my USM. There is not to be a lot of tension on the yarn, just some. For those who work with the USM, I would strongly recommend they watch Cynthia Ogden's YT vids working with that particular machine. When she made a mistake, she did not edit it out, but showed how to resolve any issue that comes up while knitting.
Actually, I've used it since 1983. This particular machine has manufacturing flaws that were touchy to overcome. It is the first time in many, many Bond machines I've taught in that has ever had these issues. I published the video in hopes it would help others.
I found the ism the black one much better. I have this one also and the ism made many improvements and has better instructions
I read a lot that we should open the carriage to see what needle it is that is causing the problem but I don't even know what it is we're supposed to be looking for. How do we tell what needle is causing the problem?
If you check the plastic needle guides on the bottom of the keyplate, you should see that one of them appears to be blocked up against one the of the needle butts. Just use your transfer tool to give that needle a tiny nudge toward the back of the machine.
I have that same carriage, and it plays up on one side, LR because the fin sticks up on that side.
It seems to be certain models of USM had poor carriage buidl. Did see some info on Gerri Baggett(dont give up on USM) where she ground down a few areas but I wondered if just have a thin strip to raise (maybe metal, plast or wood polished) on where carriage runs. Purpleponyart did a bond diary#1 on the problem also. Havnt checked C Ogden yet but maybe Diane sullivan, or Cheryl runette. Roberta rose meade has alot on USM and bond and lots of KM's. Did anyone call USM and get replacement carriage? Will maybe haul mine out of closet to try again or sell. So it sounds like careful with pushing carriage and tilt and yarn tension and ...
I offer a 1:1 knitting service to get you diagnose and fix your problems.
Okay I will look at that because the needles doesn't want to seem to catch the needles to knit a row
I have a question I just got my knitting machine. It goes smoothly over the needles but the needles are not catching the yarn how do you fix that?
A couple things to check: make sure the keyplate is setting down in the carriage and engaging the needles; make sure you have no tension on the yarn.
May I suggest you use a tighter stitch size ?
Those stitches do look rather loose, and that could be
the reason for the instant jams.
The machine may not be jamming on the back rail at all.
It just seems like it !
an organ lover thanks for the suggestion. However I have used that yarn on the same machine and with the same size keyplate several times over the 30 years I've knit on this machine. It is definitely a carriage design issue.
I stumbled upon this and believe this is my issue with my machine (same USM as in the video). I can't wait to see if it is, as I would love for it to work.
speckledyarnbug feel free to message me and I'll help you troubleshoot.
You don't you can open up that cartridge and look and see which needle is jammed it's not gonna hurt anything to open the top of that up and take a look and I just it when I got my band machine that what I was told to do from the video
Hi Trina, yes, but it wasn't keyplate jamming, the carriage itself was the problem.
deberdad esque no sabeis lo que conprais estoi viendo los vidios y algunos megusta otros no me gustan la maquina singer es la MEJOR no estos aparatos que son mas conplicados que otros la singer 100 lk es la mas econo mica
I think every machine has its purpose. The Singer 100 is not readily available at this time, and many people have the Bond Ultimate Sweater Machine since it is less expensive to get started on.
