Jakob, I know this is primarily a review of the top 2021 iOS FX Apps, but all along the way while watching this video I found tidbits of inspiration. Thanks!
Great retrospective of 2021 apps. Loved the witty chapter titles. Rymdigare is the one I use most for mangling field recordings and other environmental audio recordings. Going to check out Flux Mini.
Apart from the fab filter apps, I have all of those. Some I had forgotten about, so I must revisit them. I’m very much looking forward to Igor Vasiliev’s Space Fields as well. Thanks for all your hard work Jakob. 🐠
Every time a new piece of shiny gear comes out, I feel frustrated that I can’t afford it. Then you remind me the power of the iPad. Respect sir. Thank you.
I’ve got some of those apps (the Fab Filter apps you featured, Kajita, Other Desert Cities, Flux Mini, Gatelab, Filterstep and Chowtapemodel) and I’ve used them a lot. I’ll take a look at the rest and you have good taste in apps.
Utterly fantastic video Young sausage! There are actually quite a few apps here I don’t have. I am crazy for flux Mini though and Chow Tape is a stunner. The main thing I liked about this video though, was the awesome sounds you created with the apps
Love all these apps. So many apps from last year. I'd have to go through which ones I bought. These are all great though. Another great overview video!
I have most of these apps and I will be spending more time learning about how to use and tweak them. Excellent video it was nice how you contrasted the delay apps really helpful and I learned a lot. I really love your channel and all you do for the iOS music community Thank You!
I was wondering why I would need more delays after Timeless 3 and Klevgrand Modley (and a number of others). But your explanations and examples made it very clear again. Thank you so much. 🙏 Really helpful.
Thanks for the lesson! I’m looking for the flux mini but I’d like the amp to go past 1/32T. Might you have any recommendations? I love taking any synth or vocal or harmonica and “slicing” or “gate” and applying the effect from slow to fast and it sounds super cool!
OtherDesertCities in my Ipad can't create any sounds. Can this app alone create sounds? Do I need to connect my Ipad to another devices? Or I need to create sounds from another app first then somehow adjust those sounds with OtherDesertCities? I'm newbie, don't know any music creator software or devices
Thank you Jacob! I had never heard of a couple of these, I really want the rest of the timeless 3 set but will have to hope for a sale. In the meantime this gave me some great tips and I’ve got them ready to try!
@@rexcellencemagee6729 And if all things break, and you missed a sale: many apps go on sale on Black Friday every year. And there may be a summer sale for some as well. Dates to look forward to (and to save money for). 😊
Similar to the results you get w gatelab, filterlab, soundsaw, and shaper2, I think two of the most fun fx AU3’s out there are where you can get similar n far crazier fx (although often messier n sometimes too fun in the UI making it hard to show some restraint lol) are both made by SugarBytes and a few years old…Effectrix and Looperater. Both around $20 n iPAD only (OS X too but no iOS) They r crazy fun to work with
Have you taken a look at the Gauss Field Looper by Bram Bros/Hainbach ? I just bought it the other day and its amazing, I still need to test out if I could record Koala sounds into it(pretty sure you can).
Dude I love your stuff they are great. A question for you mate, I bought my first iPad "M1 256 GB 12.9 inch" just 7 days a go at first loved it but as a musician I find it limited and the apps are meh and it crashes a lot which is not suitable for live gigs or in fact at all, What's your opinion about Surface pro 8 as it can run conventional application "I am use Cubase the most" so I can use my plugins and other stuff with ease
That’s a really good question. Music making on iPads used to be quite stable, especially with AUv3 plugins. But unfortunately, Apple introduced an instability in iOS 14: for some people, the system forgets about the installed plugins at some point, and you either have to restart the iPad or wait a while. And a few apps are also less stable than others. You may be lucky though and never get the “forgotten AUv3s” problem. I have no experience with a Surface / Windows-based tablet. So I am unable to say whether it really is much more stable. Also haven’t seen people try that sort of solution yet. You may be breaking new ground for the community there. Music making on iPads has the advantage that many apps / plugins were written specifically for the iPad and for touch controls, and are easy to use on iPads, and tested to work with iPad resource limits etc. Not sure if you can get that on a Surface. But of course many app makers nowadays tend to have touch controls at least on their radar. (With a few exceptions.) - Also, I believe you can get many questions answered for iPad music making. Not sure if there is a good community for Surface music making. But I agree with the previous commenter that the forum at audiob.us/forum is a good place to start asking questions and finding answers, at least for the iPad. I will go out on a limb and say this: whichever system you use, it usually comes down to finding a combination of apps that work well and are stable for you. And another good idea is to have a second system that you can use while you reboot the first one. This is expensive (you need 2 tablets), but it can boost reliability quite a bit. And, btw, an M1 iPad at 12.9” is a really impressive machine. High power at relatively low power consumption, with a high quality display.
Thank you for exposing to us the important essence of these plugins. It is super valuable because after watching, I really understand what sets these apps apart from the others.
Fantastic video. This has reminded me how powerful the iPad is as a sound design tool.

Hey Jacob, I purchased the Fab Filter package. I don’t think I have used anything else since. Love them.

Great video Jakob, auGENX with Kajita sounds incredible 👏
Small typing mistake it’s Saturn2 (not 3 yet).
Ops 😅🤦♂️

Great that rymdigare is on the list. I’m just so in love with that app ❤️
Awesome work Jakob
Regarding vs visual synth, what are a the best way to render the visualizer as a video?
thanks a lot for what you do, Jakob ;)
Great video and things like this keeps me nice up to date :) Im waiting for a timeless 3 sale to grab it for my arsenal
Can "Other Desert Cities" be configured using MIDI controller knobs?
Kajita seems to be on sale right now. Time to grab! This auV3 is awesome!!
You need to make a essential iOS FX apps video!

Check out AppSliced (if you don’t know about it). It’s an app tracking site. You can use it to track app sales and be notified through email etc. 😉

For live performance Cubasis might not be best option. I highly recommend you pop over to the Audiobus Forum to find a proper answer.

Great selection Jakob and very informative thank you. Have you seen the new Flux Pro public beta yet looks pretty neat.
Yes I have. Flux pro looks like a lot of fun. 😁
Great list!
Can’t wait for release of Flux Pro, really interesting.
You said oldify... That cracked me up.. You know there was a time when we only had tape to work with.
Yeah, I used to work with tape and reel-to-reel recorders in the past.
Good ones, but you miss Dragonfly by Bleass 8-)
thank you 🙏
Ok, that diagram in rymdigar looks like a retro fax machine and copier
All AU3?
Yes.
