      @@blackpanthertchallalem8522 If you buy this, I would advise you not to. The laptop is supposed to pull a certain amount of wattage during gaming and since you will be limiting its wattage input it could either be going back to battery while you are gaming (plugging itself in and out constantly), limit your FPS significantly, launch the game with the iGPU since it would be the only one satisfied with that power.

      200-300Mhz more under all-core load. The 4900HS appears to throttle back after 3-minutes of sustained load (after things like Cinebench already complete), and appears that it would have maintained 3.5.3-6Ghz with a 45W TDP. At 35W, it dips down closer to 3.3GHz. 10% sustained all-core performance gain on the H series vs HS.
      Benchmarks of the 4800H under sustained load appear like it'll outperform any of the HS series. The 4900H may do slightly better, or it may pull back to the same speed as the 4800H under sustained load.

Just need to update some settings and the bios to improve thermals and battery (and maybe cover the logo in the front, but it's really subtle). That will reduce the price even more and perform similar when it comes to gaming. I say if you are going to use the cpu alot and on heavy task then get the model he reviewed. I like it, in some ways, but the gaming/stress CPU temps seem as if cooling is indeed an issue.
      Which kinda surprises me, provided that during simultanous loads, CPU+GPU power consumption wouldn't surpass 100W. Now Razer has been putting 100W GPUs into their 15" thin and light Razer Blade laptops for a while now - they thermal throttle alright, but combined with the up-to-60W Intel CPU, they'd have to be able to dissipate 160W of heat at any moment. This laptop, which appears to have been built around cooling, struggles at 100W. I didn't think cooling was this hard.

      I don't see the cooling problems. As far as I can see it was never throttling. The reason Jarrod was getting slightly better performance with better cooling is because that's a particular behavior of AMD boosting algorithm. Instead of having a single max temperature where the CPU starts throttling, AMD boost has various point of inflection. So, for example if the CPU is running under 70ºC, it will boost more aggressively than if it's hitting 75ºC, even though it's not throttling. The boost has like three different points of inflection in the temperature lather which gives the temp management more granularity than Intel CPUs which have a single max temp point. AMD desktop CPUs behave like that too, though it's not as noticeable since cooling is generally better in desktop compared to laptops.

I only wish you had your response time software available when you did this review as I'd be curious to get your opinion. Your summary mentioned the form factor, but it's also the speakers. I have no idea why expensive laptops don't provide good speakers. Not everyone wants to game with something on their heads or in their ears all the time. Not to mention on silent mode watching videos this machine is probably excellent. Still deciding if I'll get one, but your video helped a lot.

      @@JarrodsTech, a quick look on McMaster-Carr (industrial supplier in the US) shows the thickest copper tape to be 0.0035" or 0.09 mm. Despite the added thermal resistance of the tape, and it's adhesive*, the spreading effect reduces the thermal density from the ~9 cm^2 each of the CPU & GPU blocks. Magnesium has ~3/4ths the thermal conductivity of aluminium/aluminum, which in itself is about half that of copper.
      The only way they could maybe do it better would be to use a graphite like [Panasonic's] PGS, but for the size, the costs would be more for the latter by a significant margin.
      Side note that I forgot about. You noticed that 8-10 °C difference between the sticker and chassis in your thermal image? That is because the emissivity of the sticker is much closer to the nominal 96-98% the microbolometer is calibrated for in software. When you do additional thermal imaging of laptops with metal chassis, put a bit of masking tape on the hot area to see what the actual temperature, else you're under reporting.
      If you re-ran the test and imaged it again without that spreader, I would expect to see ~70 °C right above the CPU & GPU assuming both are stressed. Probably more trouble than it's worth.

      @@ca9inec0mic58 I'm just looking at the positives of an AMD powered laptop. I never imagined that we could get i9 tier performance on a thin and light chassis which weighs just around 1.7 kg. My office laptop HP Probook is another 14 incher at the same weight, is light years slower with i7 8550U and an integrated GPU. And the 4900HS is not even trying and is delivering i9 level performance at 35 Watts - imagine what will happen if Asus puts the same chip in its bigger Scar chassis and lets the horses run free with the standard 70W limit it allows for the current 9th gen parts. And if they slip in one with an unlocked multiplier, even Cinebench will break, let alone Intel.

    • @kognak6640
      @kognak6640 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's not hard limit. 4900HS gets 65W for few seconds and if full load continues limit drops to 55W. It stays there until cpu reaches 90C(takes couple minutes) and then starts to slide towards 35W preserving 90C thermal cap. Clock speeds at each limit are ~4GHz@65W, ~3.7GHz@55W and ~3.3GHz@35W. Power figures and clock speeds aren't fixed, thermals have significant influence on them as boost algorithm tries to extract additional performance before cooling system gets saturated. It takes about 3 minutes of full load to drop down to 35W limit. This is how Asus G14 works, different laptop with different cooling capacity can have different boosting profile. Weaker cooling with less thermal buffer certainly reduces time on boost.
      Intel chips do similar thing, they aren't capped at 45W or whatever TDP they have.

    • @gamersanditparadise
      @gamersanditparadise 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kognak6640 Intel too dynamically changes its power limits through it's so called 'DPTF', famously known as cancer software by many. But the point that I'm asking is, when Jarrod says at the same 35W power draw, adding more cooling is able to increase the frequency by 100-150 MHz, which I don't think is the case with Intel chips - an Intel CPU running at 60C seems to run at almost the same speed at 90C as well - if there's a drop in frequency, the power drops to match it. But that's not the case with AMD as, with increasing temperatures, the power doesn't drop even after drop in frequency I mean, the CPU's efficiency (clock vs temperature) on Intel is not as affected as AMD is.

      It's a good way to demonstrate the balance of a laptop. Otherwise you'll experience issues while using it in your lap. Being all tippy and what not.

      Opening with one finger tests the wight distribution..
      If a laptop can be opened with one finger, it is well wight-distributed.

    Just bought one and think I'll do a review after a good month of use. I need a nice small laptop for (usually traveling) sales and I really miss being able to game on the smaller 14" options. Very excited to get my hands on this 👍👍

      @@JarrodsTech I absolutely will 😎 & Thank you so much for your review! I know they've been selling like wild fire and impossible to find, but mine's supposed to arrive by 5/11. I'll run it through the paces of my life; work, play, casual use and let you know how it compares to my current Asus 2:1 3500u, my "old" 3700x PC and my current 3950x machine.
      I've been ready for desktop level performance in a 14" thin & light laptop forever and I'm thinking this is finally going to deliver! I'll keep you posted. Thanks again!

    At 5:00, am I right in thinking there is actually *no way at all* to type the Home key? I don't see it as an alternate function anywhere. I've seen a few recent systems ditch the "Pause / Break" key, or very occasionally PrintScreen, but Home/End/PgUp/PgDn are super important and it would be crazy not to have any way to type them!

    Hey Jarrod, apparently the G14's screen has a slow (≈40ms) grey-to-grey / black-white response time, and Dave2D noticed some ghosting playing Overwatch. Did you notice any ghosting when testing games ?

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately I don't have tools to measure it, though can't say I noticed any problems, that said I'm not the best to ask as I don't think I'm personally that sensitive to it.
