Besson is an incredible visionary at worldbuilding and shit at holding back(see Leon, both beautifully edited by Sylvie Landra). You know that universe inside and out after just 1 movie. Sylvie did not edit Valerian and see how that gorgeous but incoherent mess turned out. (The Wachowski's Jupiter Ascending had a similar issue of editing their own mess into a working movie, and they had Channing Tatum, who's way more of an action fantasy leading man than Cara and Dane.)
The Fifth Element is a masterpiece. "This outfit looks a little cruel" :D The costumes were designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier, one of the most well-known fashion designers ever. Leeloo is played by Mila Jovovich, a supermodel who would become the highest paid model in the world :) The set design was created by legendary artists Jean Giraud, better known as Moebius, and also Jean-Claude Mézières, who created the classic book series Valérian and Laureline. Chris Tucker, who plays Ruby Rhod, said it was one of his most favorite characters he played.
@@syyneater 100% agree. I remember reading an article where Tucker wasn't sure about what Besson and the producers wanted, and made some suggestions about how he should play it. He said they basically ignored him and told him to play it like they suggested. Tucker said he was glad they didn't listen to him and his suggestions 😂 The role is iconic imo 😄
Mila ATE in this role, I´ve been a fan of her since then. She actually had to learn all that weird language and the emotions she portrays, specially when she learns about war...she is amazing.
I have heard that the director originally wanted the musician Prince for the role of Ruby, but Prince turned the role down. I don't know if it's true or not; but looking at the way the role is written (black character that displays a lot of sensuality with a mixture of masculinity and feminine or effeminate qualities / diva attitude / a celebrity with adoring fans), I can definitely see how the role possibly could have been tailor made for Prince.

It's funny looking at it now, I can't see anyone else but Tucker in the role. Kinda like how Tom Selleck was supposed to be Indiana Jones but couldn't do it due scheduling. And now, Ford IS Indiana Jones forever imo 🙂
One of the many things I love about this movie is that not only do the main hero and villain never meet, but they're never even aware of each other. The closest Korben and Zorg ever come is when they narrowly miss each other at the elevators in the hotel.
Plus Zorg is actively bringing Korben on the radar of the military (who search for people available for the operation) by firing him from his cab company. Maybe by only firing 500 k of his employees Korben the general would not have been at Korbens door... ;-) So Korben was aware that Zorg existed, but only as him being the boss of the company he worked for.
There's a case to be made that Korben and Zorg aren't the main hero and villain either. Both of them are guns for hire. The space sphere is the main bad guy. Zorg is an idiot who would've gotten killed along with everyone else when the evil sphere landed. I'd argue that Leeloo is actually the main hero. Korben is playing catch up all the way. Leeloo knows what to do and how to do it. Korben is the love interest who helps the hero see why the world deserves to be saved.
@@TheL4W The military didn't show up on his doorstep because he was fired. To the best of my recollection they never mention it. They choose him because he's the last member of some elite unit that trained for this sort of mission.

Talking about main hero/villain: So if the sphere is the main villain and Leeloo is the main hero, then again hero and villain do not meet. Leeloo and Zorg meet. I would argue however that Leeloo is the main hero, because she cannot survive that world without Korben. Not to say that she is not capable of fighting and stuff, but without Korben being heroic right from the start she would most likely be in a prison cell watching the sphere destroy all life.
One detail people miss when watching this (which is understandable, as it's pretty fast-paced) is that right before they recreated her in the lab, the body part they used is a hand, and it was clutching the handle of a case, in this case the case that contained four stones, which, as we see a short time later, is missing a handle.

Trying to force people to be healthier without banning it completely and/or lack of a tobacco crop due to limited space and more demand due to the population. Either way it's all the little details that add atmosphere to make a good movie, great.
Though in general, the movie was pretty thankless for him - he was mostly acting just with the camera, or with folks covered completely in prosthetics. That doesn't give an actor a lot to work with.
I don't think anyone would ever tell you that this movie IS NOT bizarre, but that's the charm! It's SO UNIQUE! And so wonderful! So much charm and so much imagination :D
I love this movie, because it's so special in his own way. The world, the costumes, the technology. Everything is so artistic and imaginatively designed. Very few filmmakers manage to create a functioning world. And the sense of humor isn't neglected either.

French have these very cool ideas and stuff they do, and they would need to be more exposed overall in popular culture. Iirc, this movie had actual top european fashion designers working on the costumes etc.
Bruce Willis gave Chris Tucker the motivation to do the part of Ruby Rod. He said he wanted to embody Prince. Prince was selected to do the part, but Prince the the part was too out there. Right before Ruby Rod's first appearance, Chris was freaking out because he knew how he looked and how he would be represented. Bruce told him to be as flashy and take over the part so no one else could ever play it. It worked.
And it's completely unstated in the movie, and not remembered too much by people who weren't science nerds in the mid-late 20th century, a ruby rod (as in an actual rod made of synthetic ruby) was the core of the first laser ever built.

Prince actually agreed to doing the part but he was notorious for overcomitting to things and not being able to fit them into his schedule, and this was one of the many things he said he'd do that he had to skip out on.
If you watch enough movies you get a sense about the rhythm and flow, they get predictable. This movie is refreshing simply because it's different, yes it's goofy and off at times, but those intangibles are where it shines. It's a work of art, I love it for what it is, and wouldn't change a thing. RIP Luke Perry
Well, it's not predictable.. because it's French ! Luc Besson directed that movie. That's why the vibe is completely different than standard Hollywood ones. Just like Audrey Tautou in "Amélie". You either like it, or you don't. I don't think Carly understood "Amélie" either, by the way. Her Anglo-Saxon brain is not wired for that, it would seem. For instance she can't handle the female body, even if it makes perfect sense that a regenerated Liloo would not be fully clothed (puritans, I swear 🙄🙄)
I'm sure someone's mentioned it already, but Leeloo isn't a Mondochiwa, she's what was in the central sarcophagus you see in the beginning of the movie - the 'statue' in the center of the stones. I've also got to say that Mila did a brilliant job portraying a fish-out-of-water. Those scenes where she's speaking her alien language, but still delivering enough in her delivery, brilliant!
fun fact: Milla Jovovich is not actually playing her character very much. the film was shot chronologically. she came on set only days after emigrating from the former soviet block, her interacting with props on set was her actually interacting with colorful, modern looking items which they didnt have behind the iron curtain. her alien language is Milla actually speaking her native Serbian, she learned English only during production.

Ruby Rhod! The very first "influencer" in cinema and he just blew it all up rightfully 😁 SUPERGREEN EDIT: Some of us older and cultured fellows also use the term "Aziz! LIGHT!" when appropriate. Bruce Willis is an all-time badazz. NEVER EVER overly muscled, but still believable as a tough guy. The fact that NOBODY took him seriously for Die Hard blows my mind. He was PERFECT.
Not taking him serious for Die Hard makes sense. Moonlighting is my all time favorite show, and it was dumbfounding they cast ''David Addison'' to play a tough guy. It worked out in the end, but it made no sense at the time. :)
@@earlbrown Also, at the time every action hero was built in the same mold: the overly muscle bound Arnold and Stallone types. Action heroes were invincible, unstoppable forces of nature. So Hollywood wasn't really able to reconcile Bruce Willis in that mold, not understanding that, frankly, that's kinda boring. Once you see it in "Die Hard" and you see how a more vulnerable but still tough character with depth makes a movie so much more interesting, that action movies don't need to be shallow, it makes sense, but you know... Hollywood can too-often be narrow-minded, unable to see a different way of doing things, unwilling to break the mold and try something new.
I guess you also have to look at the time it came out. The 80s action genre was ruled by the big musclebound guys. Willis was like a return to the hero of the 70s and 60s, more "everyman-ish" while still unmistakeably badass, like Eastwood or Bronson.

I love this movie. It has the most late 90s all star cast with an amazing aesthetic. Not enough people mess with cyberpunk and for the time the city scape scenes are incredible. And Chris Tucker out acts everyone he comes in contact with as well. I hope Bruce has a nice and calm road ahead.
I disagree, Gary Oldman stole it. Which is amazing considering he basically hates the movie and only appeared in it so that another movie would be greenlit.
Its hilarious to me that she didn't notice the "hotel" was a giant orbital station but noticed that the villains' henchman. who were on screen for like 3 seconds, had leather pants on.....
Leeloo was reconstructed exactly as she was before being blown up. She was not one of the robot like aliens, those were her guardians bringing her to Earth along with the stones.
Well, the "robot like" parts were obviously space suits. But yea, she was inside the sarcophagus. The hand was the only remaining part of it. Strangely enough, the sarcophagus-hand they reconstructed her from was gripping a torn-off handle, and it can be seen that the box that Zorg stole was missing one of its handles, implying she somehow grabbed it or was carrying it. This is an odd detail that was never explained.
For my money the editing is THE best in movie history. There might be better examples of great editing, but I just cannot even imagine someone could do a better job editing (prove me wrong). :-D
The first time I watched the movie I didn't really liked it, because of the whole silliness, ridiculous costumes etc. But I definitely remembered it because of it's uniqueness. Then, after some time, I watched it again, knowing what to expect and not treating it seriously and I loved it. I started to appreciate it for what it is.
it might seem silly, but there is actual method to the madness. The Sets and characters where designed by french graphic novelist, Moebius, wich also worked on the Heavy metal(metal hurlant) magazines(wich was the mags in wich characters like Judge Dredd was created), wich is a Heavy inspiration for this movie. The costumes where designed by the excentric and visionary french couturier/Fashion artist Jean-Paul Gaultier, who was tasked to imagine and create the fashion of the future of the year 2300.
I worked for a theater when this was coming out and I actually got to see it in a test screening, hadn't seen any trailers or promotions for it at the time and the only thing we were told about the film was that it was from the director of The Professional (Leon), it starred Bruce Willis and it was a Sci-Fi, so we thought "Cool it must be like Blade Runner or something!" Boy what a surprise this was, and a delightful one. Sometimes I think that's how all movies should be, just go in blind.
This one is in my top five favorite movies. Perhaps not for everyone, but the quirky, over-the-top goofiness is a large part of its charm. Gary Oldman as Zorg is one of the best villains ever!
The reason why this movie is very different from most Hollywood movies is that it's a french movie. The budget came from Hollywood but the director (who also wrote the story), Luc Besson, is french. He grew up and learned how to direct movies in France it that's why the movie has a different vibe from most other hollywood blockbusters.
Other than the Professional, Besson is kind of a hack here in France. Also, many of his ideas were inspired by his 15 year old girlfriend which is why his themes are so childish.

Cassie's absolute confusion made me chuckle. This is the ultimate "don't overthink it" film, you just have to accept everything and go "yup" that's possible. Never mind that it took 20 years to find someone to sing the Diva song...

I have a friend who is kinda similar, you can tell humor wasn't really too much of a thing in the household he grew up in, because he catches on to jokes slowly, he calls being funny "acting stupid" (from a negative sense) and if you try to inject jokes into a conversation with him to make the vibe a little lighthearted, he'll get annoyed shortly afterward and switch it back to a serious subject immediately.

One of my favourite movies. Saw it in cinema when it was released and everyone was having a blast. Luc Besson was a genius having the actors improvise many scenes. For example, the whole scene when Leeloo crashes into the taxi was improvised. Both had no idea what the other was going to do. Shame Cassie didn't have more fun watching it.
Jean Paul Gaultier was the costume designer for the film. Many of the people in the film were top fashion models of the era, including Milla. Seeing the models throughout was like finding Easter eggs. It was a cool idea to bring both men and women fashion models to have cameos in the film. I hope you and your sister stay "super green" as Ruby Rhod would say. Love your videos.

According to the novel, the divas are attuned to the psychic resonance of anyone that hears them sing and it is like a feedback loop. So, your siren song comment isn't far off. Her voice affects those around her and they in turn affect her as well.
This is one of my all-time favorite movies! This movie is just so much fun! Nobody does "Over the Top" acting like Gary Oldman! "Red" is also an incredible movie, and John Malcovich is really special in it.
Yeah, Americans for some reason in general do not dig this movie. Must be a cultural thing. In Europe, it is a cult classic, considered Luc Besson's masterpiece.
Funny fact, the Diva song became very popular and it became a talk whether it was real or not. Many years later the Director Luc Besson said that they indeed had used technology in one small part of the song so it would be impossible to perform by a human being. The Diva being out of this world so to speak. Time jump to today and it turns out some humans have actually learnt that impossible part and can sing it without help from technology. Amazing human beings! I recommend Dimash Kudaibergen.
I haven't heard anyone actually nail it. Some (like Dimash) have come impressively, _amazingly_ close, but nobody has actually sung it as written/as in the movie.
@@Wolf-ln1ml It isn't possible for a human to sing it as you hear it in the movie. As stated the one part was done completely mechanically and with super tight timing so no one can ever duplicate it. Some singers can do good enough where it isn't jarringly obvious how off it is. The ones that are the most disappointing are the ones where they obviously just play the recorded bit for the movie and it is lip synced.

The whole piece was _composed_ to be impossible for the human voice, and even though it has not actually been sung as composed, I see so many comments _claiming_ that some singers have done it. Actually id go with the YT vid "Laura sings the "Diva Dance" from the Fifth Element" from about 14 years back... she hits it pretty much 100%. Every other one ive seen either fudges it or cheats in small ways to accomplish it... Laura does it virtually perfectly.
I see that she has a hard time seeing the humor in so many scenes. This movie is simply hilarious! While I'm laughing, she's thinking: wait what, how weird, huh... don't understand... You just have to go with the absolute bonkers quirkiness of the story and then it becomes fun. I do understand that some might not understand, because there's not much like this kind of humor in recent times. But this is why I love the 80s and 90s, the times I grew up in.
To be fair, I think you kind of have to have a good background in certain genres to fully appreciate this movie, especially (but not limited to) sci-fi.
@@JakkFrost1 Yes, you have to know film. Many jokes are in the montage. You have to pick up the film language. Something is said, something happens. Something happens, another character explains. Action, reaction, it's quite fast paced, and it can be strange if you don't pick up this constant play. And you have to pick up the humor from the beginning, like Aziz light! And this guy keeps a tally of how many times it is said. You have to be very adapt in picking it all up.
@@user-ll2je4kc4f No, I get it. It is a totally bonkers sci fi and yes it has annoying characters. You don't really have characters to identify with. It also has a very abstract story, more of an allegory. But I always thought that this is a movie in which you are allowed to be annoyed at all the characters and simply laugh at their silliness. Who in the real world would love Ruby Rhod? But in this world everyone is crazy about him. I don't like him, but that's why I can laugh at the silliness. And I marvel at the way the movie is edited to have comedic effect. I don't want to live in that world. I don't love the characters, and yet it is a mesmerizing movie on a creative level.
I had virtually the same reaction after I finished watching this movie and I had to watch it a couple more times before I really became immersed in everything. It is now become one of my favorite movies and I have probably watched it 30 times for more.
The novelization expanded on the black goo that showed up a couple of time. When the dark entity is near someone, or is in communication with someone, that black goo appears. It can ooze from anywhere. The novel also imply that the Moon was an older black planet that died near Earth.
I absolutely love this movie. I believe it was Milla Jovovich's first major movie role. Yes, it was kind of campy, but it was a fun sci-fi film that never took itself too seriously. Over the top was a good analogy.
He didn't say first movie roll, he said first major movie roll, and I would agree. I don't count things like Dazed and Confused or Chaplin as major movie rolls for her.
French are bombastic and I liked it because they didn't go 100% serious. They purposely added easter eggs of other scifi too. I hope you rewatch it with your sister. Since it is fast paced, you'll catch more the 2nd or 3rd time around.😎😎👍👍

Gary Oldman is fantastic in this, just like in all of his performances. An absolute legend in every role he plays. You should really react to 'Leon' if you haven't seen it already.

I wish cars like this actually existed, modernized take on the cars of the 1940s to 1950s with a retro yet modern look to them. Kind of reminds me of the Batmobile from the Batman Animated Series which funny enough Bruce Wayne based on a car he saw at the Gotham World of the Future Fair or the vehicles in the Fallout series.

The role was originally written to be played by Prince. Tucker was great at matching that energy of how the character was written, but the character was a whole different personality because of Tucker. Still glad he ended up with the part, but could you imagine a more suave Ruby than Prince?

It was a pure fun action adventure comedy. But it gained a massive cult following in rentals. Girls still dress as Leeloo for Halloween and Comicon. It started Milla Jovovich career as a female action star in the Resident Evil films. Yes her roots are bad. They died her hair once and it looked amazing. But it fried her roots and it began falling out so for most of the movie she wore a wig. Did she not recognize Bilbo?

I can't even tell you the many times I've seen this movie growing up and then replaying it again for my niece not too long ago. Now that's a fun movie to watch 😁👍. Growing up, whenever it came on the TV, I would stop and drop everything and tell my grandma the movie was on and it would be at the funny part right before Chris Tucker starts screaming. Oh my goodness, my grandma would laugh so much and so hard she'd end up having a coughing fit 🤣. Omg it was hilarious to just see how happy she got. So many good times with her. She was my partner for movie watching. I miss her. RIP grandma ❤.
It doesn't matter who you are, where you're from, what kind of music you like or don't like. Everybody loves the opera scene. Also, Chris Tucker was the most underrated Scream Queen of the '90s.

This is one of the most wonderfully chaotic hilarious movies ever....lol..😂😂 You really have to be in an of the wall sorta mood for it...Its meant to be sorta chaotic and extreme lol. It's one of my all time favorite flicks just pure genius.
Cassie, this is one of those movies that need 2 or 3 viewings to really appreciate (in that it’s a lot like Big Trouble in Little China). Watch this with your sister in like, 6 or 9 months & you might feel more of a connection the second go round🙂
I can't echo this enough. the first time through you either just accept it and laugh along, or you struggle trying to make sense of it like a standard sci-fi. Give it some time to percolate and then watch it with your sister.
12 Monkeys and Death Becomes Her are definitely more than worth watching. They are both bizarre and very different to anything else out there (much like this film), but that overt originality is part of what makes them so very good. The former is extremely psychological and the latter is very comedic, so they are very different films, but equally as good, only in very different ways, in my opinion.
A fun flick. "Die Hard" in space. It doesn't get much better. Chris Tucker and Gary Oldman are "perfect" in this movie and Milla Jovovich (spl?) isn't bad either. The humor in RED is more your style. Not nearly as goofy. I do like this movie. It grows on you.
@@Eidlones First, I love the action movie formula that Bruce Willis has developed. His action movies are all essentially him in whatever situation he finds himself. I think they all are great. So Willis finds himself responsible for saving the, people in the building or airport and all circling planes,( I could continue but she has not seen the movies yet) against overwhelming odds. Are you seeing any similarities yet? I also enjoyed the movie since it is pure Willis action.
@Randall Shuck "Die Hard in a ____" is a thing though. It talks about an everyman hero trapped in a single location where villains have taken over. It's a well known trope.
@@Eidlones Nothing in common ... except Bruce Willis. Not the greatest actor, maybe, but he seems to always make it work. Where someone like Depp, for instance, becomes the character, Bruce makes the character become him. This one little insignificant commonality is actually huge. This movie becomes "Die Hard in space," or "Pulp Fiction with aliens," or "Armageddon with a romance." Take your pick.
Gary Oldman as both Zorg (in this movie) and Sirius Black (in Harry Potter) just shows what an amazing actor he is. Oh, and the "blood" from people's heads was chocolate syrup.
I loved everything about this film. Perfect casting, creative vivid world creation, a simple yet fun plot. I loved how far Chris Tucker was willing to take it. In stoner 90's film "Friday" Chris plays Smokey small time weed dealer, and main character Craig's friend. Tommy Lister Jr. played the President in this film. In Friday Tommy was neighborhood thug Deebo, who tormented the block, including Craig and Smokey. Two roles that couldn't not be farther apart, for both of them. Tommy played a lot of "tough guy" roles just based on his size and appearance, but he was capable of much more than that. Even did voice work, and was the tiniest animal in Zootopia, even though he was generally the largest person in the room. The world lost Tommy in 2020, he had over 130 films, and over 200 credits total to his name. He was one of those actors I always loved seeing pop up.
The Bruce Willis movies made in 2020+, are all low budget direct to dvd level terrible action films, which put most of their budget into getting Bruce for his name alone. He's usually in like 5-10 min of the movie, and if you aren't seeing his face, then it's a stunt double. He agreed to do them so he could get some last money out of his career before he's unable to do it anymore.
The ultimate “don’t take yourself seriously” sort of movie. It manages to pay homage to over the top sci-fi, almost comic like in nature, while constantly poking fun at it. The opera scene fight is SO bad it’s good, it’s one of the best examples of poking fun. If Futurama was a live action movie, this’d be it. Hey, why haven’t they made that yet? Who plays Zoidberg? When I just want something blow-off fun on, this is top of my list.
This movie is two straight hours of batshit insanity, and I love every minute of it.

It's French
Besson is an incredible visionary at worldbuilding and shit at holding back(see Leon, both beautifully edited by Sylvie Landra). You know that universe inside and out after just 1 movie. Sylvie did not edit Valerian and see how that gorgeous but incoherent mess turned out. (The Wachowski's Jupiter Ascending had a similar issue of editing their own mess into a working movie, and they had Channing Tatum, who's way more of an action fantasy leading man than Cara and Dane.)
Probably the screwiest action Sci-Fi movie I've ever seen and I love every minute of it. I have it in my library and have watched it dozens of times.

The Fifth Element is a masterpiece. "This outfit looks a little cruel" :D The costumes were designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier, one of the most well-known fashion designers ever. Leeloo is played by Mila Jovovich, a supermodel who would become the highest paid model in the world :) The set design was created by legendary artists Jean Giraud, better known as Moebius, and also Jean-Claude Mézières, who created the classic book series Valérian and Laureline. Chris Tucker, who plays Ruby Rhod, said it was one of his most favorite characters he played.
I think he absolutely killed this role, he played it so damn well. It’s one of our favorite movies!
@@syyneater 100% agree. I remember reading an article where Tucker wasn't sure about what Besson and the producers wanted, and made some suggestions about how he should play it. He said they basically ignored him and told him to play it like they suggested. Tucker said he was glad they didn't listen to him and his suggestions 😂 The role is iconic imo 😄
Mila ATE in this role, I´ve been a fan of her since then. She actually had to learn all that weird language and the emotions she portrays, specially when she learns about war...she is amazing.
I have heard that the director originally wanted the musician Prince for the role of Ruby, but Prince turned the role down.
I don't know if it's true or not; but looking at the way the role is written (black character that displays a lot of sensuality with a mixture of masculinity and feminine or effeminate qualities / diva attitude / a celebrity with adoring fans), I can definitely see how the role possibly could have been tailor made for Prince.

It's funny looking at it now, I can't see anyone else but Tucker in the role. Kinda like how Tom Selleck was supposed to be Indiana Jones but couldn't do it due scheduling. And now, Ford IS Indiana Jones forever imo 🙂
One of the many things I love about this movie is that not only do the main hero and villain never meet, but they're never even aware of each other. The closest Korben and Zorg ever come is when they narrowly miss each other at the elevators in the hotel.
Plus Zorg is actively bringing Korben on the radar of the military (who search for people available for the operation) by firing him from his cab company. Maybe by only firing 500 k of his employees Korben the general would not have been at Korbens door... ;-)
So Korben was aware that Zorg existed, but only as him being the boss of the company he worked for.
Yeah, many people judge action movies based on the chemistry between the hero & villain. But the truth is, there are no rules in storytelling.
There's a case to be made that Korben and Zorg aren't the main hero and villain either. Both of them are guns for hire. The space sphere is the main bad guy. Zorg is an idiot who would've gotten killed along with everyone else when the evil sphere landed. I'd argue that Leeloo is actually the main hero. Korben is playing catch up all the way. Leeloo knows what to do and how to do it. Korben is the love interest who helps the hero see why the world deserves to be saved.

Talking about main hero/villain: So if the sphere is the main villain and Leeloo is the main hero, then again hero and villain do not meet. Leeloo and Zorg meet. I would argue however that Leeloo is the main hero, because she cannot survive that world without Korben. Not to say that she is not capable of fighting and stuff, but without Korben being heroic right from the start she would most likely be in a prison cell watching the sphere destroy all life.
One detail people miss when watching this (which is understandable, as it's pretty fast-paced) is that right before they recreated her in the lab, the body part they used is a hand, and it was clutching the handle of a case, in this case the case that contained four stones, which, as we see a short time later, is missing a handle.
I have seen this movie at least a hundred times and I never picked up on that. Thank you :)

Trying to force people to be healthier without banning it completely and/or lack of a tobacco crop due to limited space and more demand due to the population. For Gary Oldman to choose that voice to go with that look is a testament to his awesomeness.
Though in general, the movie was pretty thankless for him - he was mostly acting just with the camera, or with folks covered completely in prosthetics. That doesn't give an actor a lot to work with.
And Oldman does not care for this movie in the slightest. He was doing the director a favor, more or less.

I don't think anyone would ever tell you that this movie IS NOT bizarre, but that's the charm! It's SO UNIQUE! And so wonderful! So much charm and so much imagination :D
I love this movie, because it's so special in his own way. The world, the costumes, the technology. Everything is so artistic and imaginatively designed. Very few filmmakers manage to create a functioning world. And the sense of humor isn't neglected either.

Bruce Willis gave Chris Tucker the motivation to do the part of Ruby Rod. He said he wanted to embody Prince. Prince was selected to do the part, but Prince the the part was too out there. Right before Ruby Rod's first appearance, Chris was freaking out because he knew how he looked and how he would be represented. Bruce told him to be as flashy and take over the part so no one else could ever play it. It worked.
And it's completely unstated in the movie, and not remembered too much by people who weren't science nerds in the mid-late 20th century, a ruby rod (as in an actual rod made of synthetic ruby) was the core of the first laser ever built.

Prince actually agreed to doing the part but he was notorious for overcomitting to things and not being able to fit them into his schedule, and this was one of the many things he said he'd do that he had to skip out on.

If you watch enough movies you get a sense about the rhythm and flow, they get predictable. This movie is refreshing simply because it's different, yes it's goofy and off at times, but those intangibles are where it shines. It's a work of art, I love it for what it is, and wouldn't change a thing. RIP Luke Perry

I'm sure someone's mentioned it already, but Leeloo isn't a Mondochiwa, she's what was in the central sarcophagus you see in the beginning of the movie - the 'statue' in the center of the stones.
I've also got to say that Mila did a brilliant job portraying a fish-out-of-water. Those scenes where she's speaking her alien language, but still delivering enough in her delivery, brilliant!
fun fact: Milla Jovovich is not actually playing her character very much. the film was shot chronologically. she came on set only days after emigrating from the former soviet block, her interacting with props on set was her actually interacting with colorful, modern looking items which they didnt have behind the iron curtain. her alien language is Milla actually speaking her native Serbian, she learned English only during production.

I watched this in the theaters in the opening run. It was packed and everyone around was laughing.
Bruce Willis is an all-time badazz. NEVER EVER overly muscled, but still believable as a tough guy. The fact that NOBODY took him seriously for Die Hard blows my mind. He was PERFECT.
Not taking him serious for Die Hard makes sense. Moonlighting is my all time favorite show, and it was dumbfounding they cast ''David Addison'' to play a tough guy.
It worked out in the end, but it made no sense at the time. :)
@@earlbrown Also, at the time every action hero was built in the same mold: the overly muscle bound Arnold and Stallone types. Action heroes were invincible, unstoppable forces of nature. So Hollywood wasn't really able to reconcile Bruce Willis in that mold, not understanding that, frankly, that's kinda boring.
Once you see it in "Die Hard" and you see how a more vulnerable but still tough character with depth makes a movie so much more interesting, that action movies don't need to be shallow, it makes sense, but you know... Hollywood can too-often be narrow-minded, unable to see a different way of doing things, unwilling to break the mold and try something new.
I guess you also have to look at the time it came out. The 80s action genre was ruled by the big musclebound guys. Willis was like a return to the hero of the 70s and 60s, more "everyman-ish" while still unmistakeably badass, like Eastwood or Bronson.

I love this movie. It has the most late 90s all star cast with an amazing aesthetic. Not enough people mess with cyberpunk and for the time the city scape scenes are incredible. And Chris Tucker out acts everyone he comes in contact with as well. I hope Bruce has a nice and calm road ahead.

Its hilarious to me that she didn't notice the "hotel" was a giant orbital station but noticed that the villains' henchman. who were on screen for like 3 seconds, had leather pants on.....
Leeloo was reconstructed exactly as she was before being blown up. She was not one of the robot like aliens, those were her guardians bringing her to Earth along with the stones.
Well, the "robot like" parts were obviously space suits. But yea, she was inside the sarcophagus. The hand was the only remaining part of it.
Strangely enough, the sarcophagus-hand they reconstructed her from was gripping a torn-off handle, and it can be seen that the box that Zorg stole was missing one of its handles, implying she somehow grabbed it or was carrying it. This is an odd detail that was never explained.
This movie is a legend, full of small details. Apparently in the future, cigarettes are 80% filter and 20% actual cigarette.
I think it said he was on a plan to quit smoking so they became more and more filter, and less tobacco. Lol.
I always assumed they were the “quitting” versions, but, yeah, since they’re already rationed perhaps that is a ‘normal’ cigarette. Heheh

One of the best movies ever made! The Fifth Element has everything a good movie needs to be good but the editing makes The Fifth Element great.
For my money the editing is THE best in movie history. There might be better examples of great editing, but I just cannot even imagine someone could do a better job editing (prove me wrong). :-D
The first time I watched the movie I didn't really liked it, because of the whole silliness, ridiculous costumes etc. But I definitely remembered it because of it's uniqueness. Then, after some time, I watched it again, knowing what to expect and not treating it seriously and I loved it. I started to appreciate it for what it is.

The Sets and characters where designed by french graphic novelist, Moebius, wich also worked on the Heavy metal(metal hurlant) magazines(wich was the mags in wich characters like Judge Dredd was created), wich is a Heavy inspiration for this movie.
The costumes where designed by the excentric and visionary french couturier/Fashion artist Jean-Paul Gaultier, who was tasked to imagine and create the fashion of the future of the year 2300.
Your bewildered reaction to this had me in stitches! 😂 Cult classic that makes me laugh harder every time I see it. I adore its quirky storytelling.
What an absolutely unexpected beautiful surprise: one of my all time favorite movie for your first viewing! Got my thumbs up already.
I worked for a theater when this was coming out and I actually got to see it in a test screening, hadn't seen any trailers or promotions for it at the time and the only thing we were told about the film was that it was from the director of The Professional (Leon), it starred Bruce Willis and it was a Sci-Fi, so we thought "Cool it must be like Blade Runner or something!" Boy what a surprise this was, and a delightful one.
Sometimes I think that's how all movies should be, just go in blind.

The reason why this movie is very different from most Hollywood movies is that it's a french movie. The budget came from Hollywood but the director (who also wrote the story), Luc Besson, is french. He grew up and learned how to direct movies in France it that's why the movie has a different vibe from most other hollywood blockbusters.
Other than the Professional, Besson is kind of a hack here in France. Also, many of his ideas were inspired by his 15 year old girlfriend which is why his themes are so childish.

I have a friend who is kinda similar, you can tell humor wasn't really too much of a thing in the household he grew up in, because he catches on to jokes slowly, he calls being funny "acting stupid" (from a negative sense) and if you try to inject jokes into a conversation with him to make the vibe a little lighthearted, he'll get annoyed shortly afterward and switch it back to a serious subject immediately.

Luc Besson was a genius having the actors improvise many scenes. For example, the whole scene when Leeloo crashes into the taxi was improvised. Both had no idea what the other was going to do.

Jean Paul Gaultier was the costume designer for the film. Many of the people in the film were top fashion models of the era, including Milla. Seeing the models throughout was like finding Easter eggs. It was a cool idea to bring both men and women fashion models to have cameos in the film. I hope you and your sister stay "super green" as Ruby Rhod would say. Love your videos.

According to the novel, the divas are attuned to the psychic resonance of anyone that hears them sing and it is like a feedback loop. So, your siren song comment isn't far off. Her voice affects those around her and they in turn affect her as well.
It was so weird that it was memorable. People loved to quote the movie and reference it. That's how it aged well.

Funny fact, the Diva song became very popular and it became a talk whether it was real or not. Many years later the Director Luc Besson said that they indeed had used technology in one small part of the song so it would be impossible to perform by a human being. The Diva being out of this world so to speak. Time jump to today and it turns out some humans have actually learnt that impossible part and can sing it without help from technology. Amazing human beings! I recommend Dimash Kudaibergen.
I haven't heard anyone actually nail it. Some (like Dimash) have come impressively, _amazingly_ close, but nobody has actually sung it as written/as in the movie.
@@Wolf-ln1ml It isn't possible for a human to sing it as you hear it in the movie. As stated the one part was done completely mechanically and with super tight timing so no one can ever duplicate it. Some singers can do good enough where it isn't jarringly obvious how off it is. The ones that are the most disappointing are the ones where they obviously just play the recorded bit for the movie and it is lip synced.

Yep, that's exactly my point. The whole piece was _composed_ to be impossible for the human voice, and even though it has not actually been sung as composed, I see so many comments _claiming_ that some singers have done it. It's just annoying at this point.
The woman that originally sang it for the film, Inva Mula, actually managed to pull off 85 % of it herself. 😄
Actually id go with the YT vid "Laura sings the "Diva Dance" from the Fifth Element" from about 14 years back... she hits it pretty much 100%.
Every other one ive seen either fudges it or cheats in small ways to accomplish it... Laura does it virtually perfectly.
Loved how the cat freaked out and stared at Ruby when he showed up on the tv.

I see that she has a hard time seeing the humor in so many scenes. This movie is simply hilarious! While I'm laughing, she's thinking: wait what, how weird, huh... don't understand... You just have to go with the absolute bonkers quirkiness of the story and then it becomes fun. I do understand that some might not understand, because there's not much like this kind of humor in recent times. But this is why I love the 80s and 90s, the times I grew up in.

To be fair, I think you kind of have to have a good background in certain genres to fully appreciate this movie, especially (but not limited to) sci-fi.
She's a sweet person but is very vanilla.
@@JakkFrost1 Yes, you have to know film. Many jokes are in the montage. You have to pick up the film language. Something is said, something happens. Something happens, another character explains. Action, reaction, it's quite fast paced, and it can be strange if you don't pick up this constant play. And you have to pick up the humor from the beginning, like Aziz light! And this guy keeps a tally of how many times it is said. You have to be very adapt in picking it all up.
@@user-ll2je4kc4f No, I get it. It is a totally bonkers sci fi and yes it has annoying characters. You don't really have characters to identify with. It also has a very abstract story, more of an allegory. But I always thought that this is a movie in which you are allowed to be annoyed at all the characters and simply laugh at their silliness. Who in the real world would love Ruby Rhod? But in this world everyone is crazy about him. I don't like him, but that's why I can laugh at the silliness. And I marvel at the way the movie is edited to have comedic effect. I don't want to live in that world. I don't love the characters, and yet it is a mesmerizing movie on a creative level.
I had virtually the same reaction after I finished watching this movie and I had to watch it a couple more times before I really became immersed in everything. It is now become one of my favorite movies and I have probably watched it 30 times for more.
You might recognize Sir Ian Holm that played the priest. He was Bilbo in Lord of the Rings.
The novelization expanded on the black goo that showed up a couple of time. When the dark entity is near someone, or is in communication with someone, that black goo appears. It can ooze from anywhere. The novel also imply that the Moon was an older black planet that died near Earth.
They didn't "turn her into a human." They reconstructed her using DNA from the tissue inside of the glove they found.
I absolutely love this movie. I believe it was Milla Jovovich's first major movie role. Yes, it was kind of campy, but it was a fun sci-fi film that never took itself too seriously. Over the top was a good analogy.
Mila was a child star.

French are bombastic and I liked it because they didn't go 100% serious. They purposely added easter eggs of other scifi too. I hope you rewatch it with your sister. Since it is fast paced, you'll catch more the 2nd or 3rd time around.😎😎👍👍

Wish you liked it more but maybe because you were expecting something different it threw you off. Definitely one of the few movies I enjoy rewatching and quoting all the time!
I wish cars like this actually existed, modernized take on the cars of the 1940s to 1950s with a retro yet modern look to them. Kind of reminds me of the Batmobile from the Batman Animated Series which funny enough Bruce Wayne based on a car he saw at the Gotham World of the Future Fair or the vehicles in the Fallout series.
I too wish I lived in a comic book 😔
Ruby Rhod is one of the few "hyper extra" characters in cinema that doesn't become annoying. Damn, such a fun movie.

The role was originally written to be played by Prince. Tucker was great at matching that energy of how the character was written, but the character was a whole different personality because of Tucker. Still glad he ended up with the part, but could you imagine a more suave Ruby than Prince?

The marketing for this was terrible and missed the mark. It was said to be an epic story like Star Wars for the 90s. Totally wrong. It was a pure fun action adventure comedy. But it gained a massive cult following in rentals. Girls still dress as Leeloo for Halloween and Comicon.
It started Milla Jovovich career as a female action star in the Resident Evil films.
Yes her roots are bad. They died her hair once and it looked amazing. But it fried her roots and it began falling out so for most of the movie she wore a wig.

I went to go see this when it came out in the theatres. My friend whipped up the STRONGEST pot brownies I had ever consumed and I was so high that this film was almost a religious experience. Great movie!!!!

Growing up, whenever it came on the TV, I would stop and drop everything and tell my grandma the movie was on and it would be at the funny part right before Chris Tucker starts screaming. Oh my goodness, my grandma would laugh so much and so hard she'd end up having a coughing fit 🤣. Omg it was hilarious to just see how happy she got. So many good times with her. She was my partner for movie watching. I miss her. RIP grandma ❤.

Cassie, this is one of those movies that need 2 or 3 viewings to really appreciate (in that it’s a lot like Big Trouble in Little China).
Watch this with your sister in like, 6 or 9 months & you might feel more of a connection the second go round🙂
I can't echo this enough. the first time through you either just accept it and laugh along, or you struggle trying to make sense of it like a standard sci-fi. Give it some time to percolate and then watch it with your sister.

12 Monkeys and Death Becomes Her are definitely more than worth watching. They are both bizarre and very different to anything else out there (much like this film), but that overt originality is part of what makes them so very good. The former is extremely psychological and the latter is very comedic, so they are very different films, but equally as good, only in very different ways, in my opinion.
My favorite line in the movie! "You're a monster, Zorg." "I know."
When you realize how much pop culture influenced this movie. Jean-Paul Gautier was the lead costume designer.

A fun flick. "Die Hard" in space. It doesn't get much better. Chris Tucker and Gary Oldman are "perfect" in this movie and Milla Jovovich (spl?) isn't bad either. The humor in RED is more your style. Not nearly as goofy. I do like this movie. It grows on you.

@@Eidlones First, I love the action movie formula that Bruce Willis has developed. His action movies are all essentially him in whatever situation he finds himself.
I think they all are great.
So Willis finds himself responsible for saving the, people in the building or airport and all circling planes,( I could continue but she has not seen the movies yet) against overwhelming odds. Are you seeing any similarities yet? I also enjoyed the movie since it is pure Willis action.
@Randall Shuck "Die Hard in a ____" is a thing though. It talks about an everyman hero trapped in a single location where villains have taken over. It's a well known trope.
@@Eidlones Nothing in common ... except Bruce Willis. Not the greatest actor, maybe, but he seems to always make it work. Where someone like Depp, for instance, becomes the character, Bruce makes the character become him.
This one little insignificant commonality is actually huge. This movie becomes "Die Hard in space," or "Pulp Fiction with aliens," or "Armageddon with a romance." Take your pick.
Gary Oldman as both Zorg (in this movie) and Sirius Black (in Harry Potter) just shows what an amazing actor he is.
Oh, and the "blood" from people's heads was chocolate syrup.

I loved everything about this film. Perfect casting, creative vivid world creation, a simple yet fun plot. I loved how far Chris Tucker was willing to take it. In stoner 90's film "Friday" Chris plays Smokey small time weed dealer, and main character Craig's friend. Tommy Lister Jr. played the President in this film. In Friday Tommy was neighborhood thug Deebo, who tormented the block, including Craig and Smokey. Two roles that couldn't not be farther apart, for both of them. Tommy played a lot of "tough guy" roles just based on his size and appearance, but he was capable of much more than that. Even did voice work, and was the tiniest animal in Zootopia, even though he was generally the largest person in the room. The world lost Tommy in 2020, he had over 130 films, and over 200 credits total to his name. He was one of those actors I always loved seeing pop up.
The Bruce Willis movies made in 2020+, are all low budget direct to dvd level terrible action films, which put most of their budget into getting Bruce for his name alone. He's usually in like 5-10 min of the movie, and if you aren't seeing his face, then it's a stunt double.
He agreed to do them so he could get some last money out of his career before he's unable to do it anymore.
The ultimate “don’t take yourself seriously” sort of movie. It manages to pay homage to over the top sci-fi, almost comic like in nature, while constantly poking fun at it. The opera scene fight is SO bad it’s good, it’s one of the best examples of poking fun. If Futurama was a live action movie, this’d be it. Hey, why haven’t they made that yet? Who plays Zoidberg?
When I just want something blow-off fun on, this is top of my list.
