The footage is of Audie Murphy himself who went on to have quite a major movie career after returning from WWII. To Hell and Back is also the name of the 1955 movie with Audie Murphy.
The song is based on a poem by Audie Murphy
    THE CROSSES GROW ON ANZIO
Oh, gather 'round me, comrades; and
    listen while I speak
Of a war, a war, a war where hell is
    six feet deep.
Along the shore, the cannons roar. Oh
    how can a soldier sleep?
The going's slow on Anzio. And hell is
    six feet deep.
Praise be to God for this captured sod that
    rich with blood does seep.
With yours and mine, like butchered
swine's; and hell is six feet deep.
    That death awaits there's no debate;
    no triumph will we reap.
The crosses grow on Anzio, where hell is
    six feet deep.
    . . . Audie Murphy, 1948

    From Wikipedia:
Murphy ordered his men to retreat to positions in the woods, remaining alone at his post, shooting his M1 carbine and directing artillery fire via his field radio while the Germans aimed fire directly at his position. Murphy mounted the abandoned, burning tank destroyer and began firing its .50 caliber machine gun at the advancing Germans, killing a squad crawling through a ditch towards him. For an hour, Murphy stood on the flaming tank destroyer returning German fire from foot soldiers and advancing tanks, killing or wounding 50 Germans. He sustained a leg wound during his stand, and stopped only after he ran out of ammunition. Murphy rejoined his men, disregarding his own injury, and led them back to repel the Germans. He insisted on remaining with his men while his wounds were treated. For his actions that day, he was awarded the Medal of Honor.

He was such a bad ass that when he was directing artillery they were so close on him that when they asked for coordinates he said hold on I will put one of the bastards on the phone.

@@jacobreynolds8199 If I remember right, he was also such a badass that his commanding officer had to be told someone could only be awarded the Medal of Honor ONCE, after he nominated him for a second.

Sabaton actually met Audie Murphy's son at a concert, where he gave them a movie poster for "To Hell and Back" after the show.

Murphy earned every accolade for valor that the USA has, as well as medals for valor from the countries of Belgium and France.

Cpt. America story might be older than Audie´s military enlistment. Question is if Audie inspired Cap. America´s origin story.

Also the footage is the movie they made of him, and the combat scenes shown, he plays himsef.

So the clips that they show are actually from a movie about Audie and the man without the helmet is Audie Murphy. He became a big star and an American hero and also suffered from PTSD and drug abuse. He locked himself in a motel room for a period of time to break himself of his drug addiction

Thank you for this; more people need to know his name. Murphy was definitely one of my dad's heroes and this is one of my favorite Sabaton songs. I'd heard making the movie was scarier to him than actually being in the war (because of the practical explosion effects). Now I wonder how much of that can be blamed on the PTSD. Adds a completely different angle to the story.

At one point the director asked Audie to show him his "war face" while filming.
Audie showed him, and was promptly asked to not do that for the scene because it was too scary to film.

Also just imagine being in the motel room next to him. Like what do even begin to think or react.

Great reaction, guys!🤘 A song about another American war hero is "82:nd all the way". It's about Alvin York, a real badass! I recommend the live video from Munich, 2020 or the official lyric video. Also check out "Devil dogs" (official music video). It's about the U.S Marines in WW1.

Our all star was The Big Red Machine. He went AWOL after we got back from Iraq. Did the opposite. Shut himself in a hotel and smoked a ton of pot. So isolation but self medication. Both were big no-nos. He got no real discipline, the highest level discharge possible, and instructions on how to upgrade his discharge. He was the best, and we thanked him for his service. But when you've had enough, we understand.

Audey Murphy one of my favourite Western movie heros, a real hero.
Although the military pushed his story a bit he become the poster progander boy for the military and done more after he was wounded out of front line service for recruitment, raising funds in war bonds ect . So he was still able to still do his bit still . I still watch his films over and over again .
