The whistling at the beginning is an ode to his time as a western movie star. His son thanked Sabaton for making a song about his father that was not country and western. One of the tanks Sabaton use as a drum riser in live shows is named "Audie." Murphy won the Medal of Honor for his actions as a platoon leader in France during WW2. His company was advancing when they were attacked by a superior German force. he ordered his men back into defensive positions while stayed in a forward position calling in artillery. When German infantry started to overrun his position, he climbed onto a burning tank and used the 50-caliber machine gun to fight off the enemy. Even though severely wounded, he continued to fight and call-in artillery until the Germans withdrew. he refused medical attention until he knew his company was safe. One of the really true heroes in history. This is a deep and wonderful rabbit hole, enjoy. Keep rocking
The war footage you see in the video is from a movie called "To Hell and Back" It's about Audie Murphy and he stars in it (he became an actor in the 1960's) so that footage you see is of the real Audie Murphy. Also the song is based on a poem written by Murphy called "Crosses Grow on Anzio". Tragically he died in a plane crash.
The Crosses Grow on Anzio: Oh, gather 'round me, comrades, and listen while I speak; Of a war, a war, a war - where hell is six feet deep. Along the shore, the cannons roar. Oh how can a soldier sleep? The going's slow on Anzio and hell is six feet deep. Praise be to God for this captured sod that’s rich where blood does seep; With yours and mine, like butchered swine; and hell is six feet deep. That death does wait there's no debate; no triumph will we reap The crosses grow on Anzio, where hell is six feet deep. "1st Lt. Audie Murphy, 15th Infantry, Age 19"
Audie Murphy after the war became big in Hollywood. He was the star in the movie about his time before and in the war. Many western movies as well. He was the only man John Wayne ever called "sir" to.
Sabaton has there own "Sabaton History Channel" on youtube were they cover the history of the song topic. th-cam.com/video/n0PriUnAJ3U/w-d-xo.html Also the title is the same as Audie's movie about himself in WW2 this song mainly just covers his time in Italy and his poem "the Crosses Grow on Anzio " Oh, gather 'round me, comrades; and listen while I speak Of a war, a war, a war where hell is six feet deep. Along the shore, the cannons roar. Oh how can a soldier sleep? The going's slow on Anzio. And hell is six feet deep. Praise be to God for this captured sod that rich with blood does seep. Audie Murphy, 1948
Should check out the Simple History episode for Audey Murphey. The man was an absolutely insane individual with an incredible life story. Normally would recommend Sabaton History but they don't do the man enough justice in their episode...
You picked a great Sabaton song. It is an older one. Check out their newer stuff. They are insane. I recommend the Christmas truce, which is a event that happened in 1914 in World War 1. They sing about military history in pretty much all their songs. I can also recommend NO bullets fly. A song about an event that happen during WW2. watch it all the way to the end. It will bring you tears. Please listen to those songs
Audie Murphy is one of several soldier returning back from war that is the inspiration for Davis Morrell's book First blood's protagonists Rambo. The character got his name from a French merchant names Rimbaud and the apple Rambo. The apple got its name from Peter Gunnarsson Ramberg (later Rambo). Ramberg was a name he taken from the place Ramberget in Gothenburg. Peter Gunnarsson Rambo is one of the very first settlers to New Sweden in the lower reaches of the Delaware river.
There are almost no bad Sabaton songs, but there are definitively some that just can not measure up to most of their work. Also: Heilung - Alfadrirhaiti The Hu in general. Rammstein - Deutschland < = THAT is a lesson in german history.
This is about Audie Murpy, but have you listened to "82nd all the way" which is about Alvin York? another one who received the MOH "by accident" like Audie. Oh btw, Audie was a Western Movie Star in the 50s...thats why ;)
great song to pick by the way man great but I want to talk real quick about the PTSD aspect in American society a lot of soldiers do get help the thing is is we lost 300,000 soldiers in world war II in 4 years we lost like 5,000 give or take in the past 20 years dealing with the whole stuff over there more people live because of modern surgical and prosthetic and physical therapy so that's why we have so many people with PTSD but also you can't help people who don't seek help either like we don't disregard our veterans in this country honestly and obviously and I'm not arguing or disagreeing or telling you you're wrong or anything by the way and yes we could do better and honestly sabaton should be the only music people listen to to know history and honestly sabaton should be like more popular than these stupid pop bands we have in this country
Murphy apparently had a love for spaghetti westerns hence the music in the start. For a country with such a large military and will to fight (no offence intended) its strange they dont teach you the downsides of it all.

Audie Murphy, the guy they sing about, is the actor playing himself in the movie clips.
The Crosses Grow on Anzio:

I love this song it’s a topic that needs more attention. When’s that Grailknights reaction coming 🙏🔥👍
The war scenes in the video are from a movie where Audy Murphy do about his auto biography book name "To hell and back"
