A little fun fact, some of the lyrics from this song are actually from Audie Murphy's own poem and the title of the song is the title of Murphy's own book "Hell and Back".
He directed his own WW2 movies and starred in them too.

I think the story of what happened AFTER the war is equally as amazing. It really shows how it wasn't necessarily the actual troops that were the evildoers in the Nazi regime, but the leaders.

The "folk-ish" style you mention is because they wrote it like music you hear in Old-West movies. This was because Audie Murphy acted in a number of spaghetti western movies during his film career. This whole song from the name, to the instrumentals, and lyrics/subject matter personify Audie's life on an insane level which is why it is definitely one of my all time favorites from them.
I have heard of the band Sabaton, but this reaction video is the first song that I have ever heard from the band. Makes me wonder why I haven't made an effort to check it out. I feel like I have missed out.🤯 Thank you Alex!

My favorite story of Murphy was when he, while wounded and out of ammo, jumped into a disabled tank's machine gun turret and held back advancing Germans for over an hour by himself. Keep in mind the tank was burning so he did this while choking down smoke.It's also said that moments after he climbed out and regrouped with reinforcements the tank's spare shells caught fire and exploded. If that ain't some action movie shit I dunno what is.

Also, here's hoping you get to see these guys live on the tour this fall! They were my first power metal concert, and you think the studio songs are energetic and amazing? Try seeing it live on the rail with the energy of the crowd and band combined! Hearing "Diary of an Unknown Soldier" and "The Lost Battalion" still give me chills.

Am absolutely thrilled you did a reaction to this video. This is one of my favorite songs by them along with Blood of Bannockburn. They are so awesome live of you get the chance to see them.
The two things that cemented this song as one of my favorites by them are the spaghetti western vibe which is just really cool, and the lines "and all along the shore where cannons still roar, they're haunting my dreams they're still there when I sleep" before jumping into the solo, so great.

*Well,Tobias Sammet's AvantasiA is more like a long term-project than a band. His band is still EDGUY. I think Alex would definitely love EDGUY-songs like "Spooks in the Attic" , "Children of Steel" , "Mysteria" or "We Don't Need A Hero" as well. But of course AvantasiA's "The Scarecrow" is a friggin' great song. And the song "Shelter from the Rain" is one of my AvantasiA-alltime-favourites.*

@@NicholasCorvin Avantasia is a band/project hybrid. It started out just as a project, yeah, but once they started touring in 2008 and somewhat stabilized their musicians it became more band-like. Alex would definitely love both Avantasia and Edguy! We try to pick the most spectacular and iconic songs to hook him in.

Such a shame, that he made react on bismarck earlier, a song released earlier but not far from today and didn't made it for Fields of Verdun that sabaton teased us from longer time than bismarck and plus it's the first released of their new album and i think that it's one of the album main song, the album will contains another song about trenches war : A ghost in the trenches that for me looks the more promising song, i've high hopes on this one.

@@apear4892 It is a bit extreme how they handle these kind of things but I'm not sure how the fair use works in Germany exactly, so I can't say if they are breaking anyone's rights. And I think if you built a strong enough case, they will let it pass (there are top 10's with Rammstein Music) but I think it will quite a hassle to have your video back and for most people that would require way too much effort.

Alex, fun fact for you: back in 2007 I saw Sabaton live and it was RIGHT before they became really big. It was in a venue for 300 people at MAX, in my hometown Nijmegen (Netherlands). In 2008 I saw them again at Graspop (Belgium) and their crowd was 10,000 or more. After that they only became bigger and bigger.

Yo Alex! Great reaction! For a little more perspective, the lyrics of the song, in many locations, are taken directly from his autobiography (which I have read and it is amazing!) and the footage you saw was from the movie in which he portrayed himself. This happened because the actor originally cast could not get it right and since Audie was serving as a technical advisor, he was convinced to take the part.
The section "bright, a white light, if there be any glory in war" is actually his dedication in the front of the book to two of his fallen comrades which the band used as tribute to him. I highly suggest reading the book. The movie could be too dated as it was released in the 50's. To further show who he was, his sister signed a document to get him into the military at 17 after his mother's death and he was soon off to war. All those medals were awarded before he turned 21 years of age. This song makes me think--what was I doing at 21?
