I purchased Filmic Pro and all the extras. For them to pull the carpet out from under people like me just wouldn’t be fair. I am a hobbyist filmmaker and make no money what so ever. I am also disabled and on a limited income so a subscription, especially at the prices FilmicPro is charging, is out of the question. I subscribe to very little because it starts to add up fast. In most cases, if I can’t pay one price, and own it forever, I’m not interested. If they force current users to the subscription, I’m out. I simply can’t afford it, no matter how good the product is.

Like most comments, I am against ANY subscription model. Period. If they need to make more revenue, then charge more for the app. I stopped using Premiere when they went subscription, and I stopped using my slate app when they went subscription. When companies try to charge people twice for something they already paid for, it is a mistake and they will loose users. Everyone looks at Adobe and thinks they can follow that model, but they can't. Adobe only gets away with it because they have Photoshop and After Effects along with Premiere.
Filmic Pro is good, but not good enough where a competitor can come in and grab their market share. Example for Premiere is Davinci Resolve.
It will be the end of Filmic Pro. Just make the app $50 for new users.

  • @marcburl

As someone who bought FilmicPro and all its add-ons, it’s obvious I think they have a great product. To be frank, it was underpriced for what it did, especially when compared to other premium video apps such as LumaFusion. I would have paid twice what they asked as a one-off, all-in payment.
But trying to corral me and everyone else into a subscription model that costs as much as a Premiere Pro subscription for a PC simply doesn’t fly. It looks like a bad miscalculation.
The main problem Bending Spoons and Filmic Pro face with this idea is that they no longer have a unique product on the market that can demand a premium price. Now it is possible to do just about everything Filmic Pro does with other apps out there. More pertinent though is that Apple is bound to encroach on its market. By bringing ProRes to its iPhones and constantly improving Cinematic mode, Apple is laying down flags that it wants pro video capability on its phones. Logically, that means offering pro functions(like Sony’s phones) that will obviate the need for Filmic Pro. If iOS is upgraded to allow white balance settings, manual focus with peaking, control over shutter and ISO, and couples all that to workable Cinematic mode, then FIlmic Pro will become largely redundant. Imposing a stratospherically expensive subscription as the world dips into recession and as Apple ups its offering will kill Filmic Pro’s reputation as a company deserving of budding filmmakers’ attention. A shame for an app that made films such as ‘Tangerine’ possible. But one only has to think of GPS units before Google Maps, or photo editing software before Apple improved its own, to see the likely direction of travel. A real shame.

I couldn’t have summed this up better. Apple and Android smartphone manufacturers could completely pull the rug from under companies such as FiLMiC Pro by enhancing their current camera software to match or exceed FiLMIC’s capabilities right out of the box. Of course, this wouldn’t be ‘free’ as you still have to buy the phone but, once you’ve bought it, using the camera with such enhanced, professional settings would not carry a ridiculously expensive weekly subscription. It sounds odd to say but I take into account any future phone purchase based on its camera capabilities, rather than how well it handles calls to my mother. Incorporating the essence of FiLMIC Pro’s capabilities within the regular phone app would sway me to upgrade to the next pro model.

If I was getting to go out and create on a regular basis, I could justify a low-cost subscription ($3-5/month). But I don’t.

I disagree that BMD "needs" to make a camera app. Maybe for controlling their cameras, but, not as a standalone camera app. It would cut into their camera sales because a lot of people are downright lazy and would go the app way because it's easier. Despite the loss of features that come with such an app.

Last comment for now. As you mentioned Blake, FP should realize not everyone who's using this is a professional who uses it regularly and makes money off of its use.
And another thing to think about FP is perhaps you've decided to just cut off people who've paid their hard-earned money for this as they wouldn't be spending more money anyway. So perhaps in your eyes, that's not a problem. But it is. You sold this to us with the understanding this purchase was a one-time payment. If you just dump us now in that way this creates extremely bad karma for you. Don't doubt it. I'll let this go for now and check in later. It's been too upsetting. I'll focus on more positive things.

Thanks! I have FP on my iPhone 13 but never use it because it's notoriously unreliable. I would never pay for a subscription to FP. As a rule, the native camera app on your phone is the best camera app to use, because it's simple and reliable. It's specifically designed this way to reduce creative friction and help people to actually do something. FP teaches filmmakers bad habits because it places the focus on gear and production value, rather than story and character and doing.

It would be nice if Apple would improve the native camera app though. You currently can’t lock focus or exposure or white balance independently. That’s a huge problem. So it really doesn’t work for anything other than social media or home movies. The bit rate is too low too (unless using ProRes). I have to say this was awful news for me to. I am new to filmaking and have I spent the last 3 months getting my gear together and preparing for a documentary project. Filmic Pro was by far my best option for many reasons and I spent several hours studying it, watching channels like this and many others. I planned to purchase it as soon as I arrived in location, but when I went to the app store to do it, just a few days ago, I couldn't really understand what was going on. There was no information available anywhere, and I thought for some reason me being in a remote 3rd world country could be causing this "issue" with the pricing and subscribing plan. But no, I was just a few days late! It felt like a punch in the gut. Very unprofessional of Filmic Pro not to advertise this in advance, or actually go slow into the subscription mode by having more reasonable prices at the begging, etc. I guess they just don't really care about the user base and are just expecting to keep the business as profitable as possible. Nothing new. Anyways, I missed the FP train, happy for those who managed to purchase earlier and enjoyed the ride! I am really looking forward to the next app that can fill this gap!

I am against all subscription based applications. I have no problem with purchasing an app outright and paying for significant updates but not by subscription. When they offered Ciné-Kit, Lut packs and apps like Filmic Remote I bought them no problem because there was a value added. Paying a subscription just because they want more money holds no value for me. If every developer goes subscription based there will be a point when you can no longer afford to keep them all. If Filmic is having financial problems they are really going to have problems when they start losing customers that are hobbyists, which I suspect are the majority of their users. I stopped using all Adobe products when they went subscription based. Many people dropped Avid when they stopped providing perpetual licenses. If Filmic goes subscription based only or offers advanced features to subscribers, I will have to find another. No one pays me for development. They pay for the end result.

But if it becomes a subscription model, it loses so much of its value as a upgrade from the stock photo app. If I need it’s capabilities, I would pay for it while I needed it. But It would bother me every time I opened it. It will create a passive or subconscious negative opinion towards the brand even if it’s not actually being greedy. I adopted to this app and I can easily adopt to another one. FilmicPro has some really disadvantages like the small exposure setting numbers which I cannot read on the display (too small) or that the settings constantly change from sequence to sequence. I am not against paying for an app on a yearly basis when the price is right. I think 30 Euro / year is my max and the rise over the years must be moderate.

It was a great deal and it was (is) a great bargain, but if they force me to the subscription model, I'm gone and the app will be deleted. I'll find another way to get my work done. I totally get it, every company needs to make a buck, but again we see this so much now days, little company comes out with a great product, creates a loyal audience, promises are made, little company gets taken over by bigger company and all the rules change and the old promises no longer exist. I hate subscriptions. I'd rather dump the software rather than pay a subscription. I'd rather pay to upgrade my software if I saw that there were important and useful updates. That way I would know if the cost was worth it. If a company like Filmic Pro did move into subscriptions, I'd hope that the basic software would be free and that you would pay for advanced features on a subscription basis. Right now advanced features cost more, but moving those to a subscription approach might be palatable if those features were important. Also, as a retired university professor, I can tell you that students will not be able to pay on a subscription basis. If Filmic Pro goes the subscription route, it will lose students who in the future might become potential professional users of their software. Please, Filmic Pro, don't do it!

So you will also have a feedback from the community - what features are really needed and what features are not as appealing as supposed to be. As for the app updates. Bug fixing is something any responsible developper should do. The customers are paying good real money expecting to receive good, functional software. I am a student in cinematography. I am using Filmic Pro from time to time, but not very often. I bought it because is a tool that can be used occasionally, when I do not have my MFT camera with me. I just opened the app, which I haven't in some time, to see what would happen. And if you open it you are immediately confronted with a screen stating "Hi there!" We're updating our Terms of Service." And saying we have until September 15, 2022, to accept the new terms of service. "If you don't agree to the new terms you'll need to stop using the app before that date."
So naturally, I went to check out the new Terms of Service which BTW are from Splice Video Editor S.r.l.& Bending Spoons S.p.A.. The new Terms of Service went on and on. Seems like you'd pretty much need to have passed the bar exam to understand them. Plus, and this is the big plus, to find out how long the new terms were I copied and pasted them into Microsoft Word. The total number of words in the new Terms of Service is........................ 13,165!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 13,165!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 30 pages long in Microsoft Word! To use a small app on your phone!!!!!!!!!
This is one of those instances where you'd love to be there with the person or people who have created this, Bending Spoons S.p.A., and just say to them, "What's wrong with you?!! Your greed is clearly making it impossible to clearly understand your customer's use of this app!!!"
These are the type of totally out-of-touch people we are forced to deal with in our lives these days. Sad, sad, sad.
So will we be able to just use the app and added accessories and skip any future updates? If not this will be an instance of spending our hard-earned money they've basically stolen now, with no concern for their customers, and we'll be forced to delete the app.
If you disregard how this affects your previous customers and are driven by greed, and horrible business practices, and rip us off, I believe your business will struggle greatly going forward.

I am 100% against paying a subscription model for any app, they can't be forcing users in my opin it needs to be a choice. Too many app devs are trying to make users pay for a monthly sub not cool ... like most I purchased some time ago and Bending Spoons needs to listen to its users and not force a sub. This is not a service like Electrical or Netflix when are these companies going to get that most of us want a one time purchase and some upgrades, but no Monthly or Yearly. If they pull this crap I want the money I spent to buy it back.
Most users should let them know we don't want that and if they don't listen then I do think its the end of them. I saw splice changed and I will not sub to use it, too bad as it was good as a FREE app and one might buy something like it as a one time FEE but subs on any app no way. I say everyone needs to voice there opin to the CEO maybe then they will see its not a good idea. An app is not and should never be a Monthly or Yearly service period. I am really beginning to despise all these companies that are forcing a sub.
Some have tried and failed due to public backlash on social media and had to revert back and that's what should happen here if they try and push that. That is my two cents.
