Hi, I am a UK viewer of this video, which is very informative and helpful. When you come out of the App, does it retain the settings, or do you have to reset over again?. Many thanks. Terry Dasvis
Great video. Great alternative. One thing the app doesn’t do that Filmic does is to be able to control the start and stop from an Apple Watch. Do you know of an alternative app that has this feature? I use an anamorphic lens when I shoot and need to start and stop remotely. Thanks! Mike
That’s a good question. I’m actually not sure. My Apple Watch just automatically goes into that mode when I launch FiLMiC Pro. I’ll look into that. Thanks for watching!
Great video. What are you going to do now that Moment lenses are no longer compatible with the iPhone 14 pro/max? Do you have experience with Sandmarc? Who would you say is the new leader in lenses for iPhones?
I like Moment, Sandmarc and Beastgrip. I don’t have my Moment case yet, but from what I’ve seen the lenses actually do work. Once I get a case/cage I’ll be testing them on the channel to confirm.
@@iphoneographers unfortunately they do not work. Check Reddit for the results. I tested all their lenses with my 14 pro and had issues with each one, even just centering them directly on the phones camera glass. They’re refusing to say there are problems but unfortunately we (the customers) are finding out the hard way.
Ah okay. Thanks for the info. Will definitely test that out soon. Beastgrip released a video showing their lenses in action. Most newer ones work, but some don’t.
One thing that I really like(d) about filmic had noting to do with the actual photography, but that it names the files with date and time. Apple’s automatic naming is completely useless in that regard and metadata can get lost when transferring and copying files. Is there a way to get this naming natively and how do other apps handle this?
I missed it, does this app have a setting to work with Anamorphic lens? I am a newbie, getting myself ready as best as I can to take some video on a trip to Europe. I had on my bucket list, an anamorphoc lens, maybe an ND, and a Insta360 X3 to round out a simple pocket filming kit. Like I said, newbie. I figure if I keep it simple I will have enough time to learn a few basic tools over point and shoot stock footage. Also planning to try my hand at editing/posting through LumaFusion. Any advice appreciated! Cheers
Yes, it has an anamorphic setting in the menu. Just turn that on and it will desqueeze the image for you. That sounds like a good set up your planning and keeping it simple is always good especially traveling. You just need to figure out what case or cage you would use to mount the anamorphic and ND. Moment is a good option depending on what phone you have. Good luck!
Which app will you recommend if not filmic pro app to do your anamorphic footage beastcam this one in this video etc i like this app as filmic replacement but what about anamorphic de-squeeze footage
I am using Cinema P3 Pro for TH-cam, so which format should I use for the highest quality in the free version - 4k 24 fps P3 or 4k 24 fps HLG 10-bit HDR? I've heard that HDR should not be enabled on videos as it makes the video look bad when uploaded on social media like TH-cam.
Go with standard SDR video (P3 is fine) for most compatibility. HDR can look really good, but it can also be tricky to do post-production and then depending on the viewers display you can get mixed results (although sites like TH-cam are supposed to conform HDR to SDR, but it doesn’t always work).
Nice vid. Downloaded the pro app. Love it so far..but can someone explain how to transfer vid files to either the photo app or airdrop to Mac. Some reason..I’m not seeing that option. TIA
Yeah, that is kind of weird and encountered the same thing. My assumption is they must’ve just added the library support, so there’s no transfer function in the actual library yet. Go to the Files menu, and then their app folder, and the clips are there and you can AirDrop. I’m going to contact them with some feature requests and this will be one of them.
There are no options to export files from within the App - just the media viewer. Use the "Files" app to access the files which are stored in CinemaP3/Documents/ You can also connect your iPhone to a Mac and access the files using Finder.
@@blackburnapps5276 I'd love to see that changed. Quickly doing a review of clips within the app and then airdropping the keepers to a mac is an important part of an effective workflow. Thank you.
Great video! I will not continue with Adob... er, FilmicPro, so I'm curious what your final top 3 replacement apps will be. I do like the UI layout of Cinema P3, though...
As expected, it’s a really good app, but… I have a start/stop Bluetooth remote control that came with both of my iPhone and iPad tripods, but they don’t work with the app, which is a nuisance so I have contacted the developer to see if there’s something in settings that I need to do and, if not, to ask if they can include the remote control feature in a future update. I definitely won’t be using the app until I can use a remote so it’s back to plain old Apple camera for now. Don’t not get this app, though, because it’s brilliant
You should contact them. They are very responsive and as a matter fact, they’re in the comment section right now in this video. but go to their website or maybe Twitter and send them a message about a feature request.
Is Filmic Pro the only camera app that provides 2nd monitor (ex.-2nd iPhone) live preview? So far that is the one remaining feature that makes it hard to cut ties with Filmic Pro, for my needs. Without that feature I need to go with DIY mirror gadgets. ;-) Some of my projects involve working with puppets where I need to be in front of (back) camera and still have a live preview of shot.
Great video as always. Does this support higher than 16khz when connected to a Bluetooth mic? Also are there presets for settings, and support for anamorphic lenses?
I was pretty "pissed" as I found out about the rediculous price increase. So I went back to using the camera app that came with the iPhone 13ProMax. I tell you what. The cinematic mode has become so much better. I see no reason for a separate app. I still use ND filters, of course, and I am happy with the results. I also did more tests with handheld vs. Gimbal, and I think I will sell my Gimbal when I get my 14Pro in 2 months.
I use Cinematic mode a lot too. It’s great especially on the 14. But what’s not great is you can’t even lock the exposure or white balance like you at least can with the standard video camera. And of course you can’t do any manual shutter or ISO. So I end up using it for more casual stuff, which it works well for that.
The „subscription“ (aka „bought previously“ information) sticks after you open the app with internet connection and you can open the app offline. For me it took three or four times, for others the information sticks after first opening right away. - Seems like something minor, but that implementation is one of the reasons why I no longer use filmic pro. If you do not use the app very often, there is a realistic chance, you open it up in a remote location and it will not work because the app have not called home for a while and needs confirmation first - my personal nightmare
Can iPhone features like Cinematic mode or Slo-Mo be accessed while using this app or are those only available in the native camera app? If not, are you aware of a 3rd party app that allows access to those features? I want the control of locking my shutter speed to 1/48 sec while still getting the faux-bokeh of Cinematic mode.
Cinematic mode is technically only available in the native app. However, there are two other apps that do a similar thing, but they also are more or less full auto settings. I did a comparison of them here th-cam.com/video/W9I_nDV35lw/w-d-xo.html. I do hope manual control comes to CM soon. Now slowmo you can do in any third-party app with full manual control.
I Came across another fantastic Pro video camera app that lets you do 4K@60fps and has one feature that Filmic Pro does not have and that is, it has a Video Pause Record button and lots of Color Luts etc and the best thing about this amazing app is that it only costs a one off payment of $1.99 American Dollars, the name of the app is Midas - 4K Live Filter Camera.
Not so fantastic and certainly not an option to filmic pro. Midas is also a subscription service. You need to pay a subscription in order to have access to all features.
Yeah, I'd like that feature to, I had it once on something but cannot remember what. Hopefully some day we'll get that option. I prefer editing (my way of keeping order) like that as there's less clips involved.
Is there any kind of hardware that's not a gimbal that allows you to wirelessly pull focus in Filmic or any of these apps? Seems like it's a necessity if your phone is in a beastgrip pro cage. Kind of a pain to pull focus with your finger or thumb on the screen. Is there a wireless follow focus for iphone?
Not hardware per se, but you can use the Filmic Remote app (with Filmic Pro) on another phone or iPad and control all settings including focus. MoviePro has a remote app as well.
Yes. I’ll probably do a follow-up after I use it more. Main ones initially are no gimbal controls, no clean HDMI output, and no ProRes log. But it’s got a lot as is and appears the developer is open to adding features.
I found it does have clean HDMI and it works great! The white balance set tool is great. The x2 and x3 zooms work great, too. Clean HDMI is an HDMI signal without the application’s reticles and controls that appear on the phone’s screen. Adios, Filmic Pro! Thanks for making me aware of this app; I use it now for video recording and live streaming! Cheers!
You can’t change the aperture with any of these apps as it’s fixed due to the iPhone hardware. But you can manually control the exposure with the shutter and ISO.
This was awesome! Thanks for sharing. I was disappointed in visiting their site and seeing that they don't offer an Android version. Real bummer. Do you recommend any others as an alternative to Filmic Pro. I will not be paying subscription going forward.
Will this app record at a constant frames per second? For example, will 4K30 be a true 29.97 fps, or will it be all over the place like the native iPhone camera ... 29.76, 30.0001, 29.8 etc? I can't find any settings in the native camera that will stop this, and it's really annoying when each clip is a slightly different frame rate. Some clips are so far off that they're seemingly unusable, even after encoding them.
The third party apps do a MUCH better job at keeping the frame rate consistent. You almost never see the odd numbers like you do with the native app. However, smartphones in general record VFR, so you can’t really stop it. But again, these apps present it to your editing app as a constant rate. One thing you can always do if/when this is an issue is conform any clips to the proper frame rate within the editing app (each app does this differently). Or you can even transcode the files to create new ones with exact timecode (but I almost never do this anymore).
@@iphoneographers Thank you! I also noticed that Cinematic Mode seems to be the worst for altering the frame rates. I recorded a 4K@30 clip that came out at 27.75, not even close. Low light/auto FPS was even turned off.
The kind of phone you’re using is probably the most important thing. The newer iPhones, really starting with the 12 Pro Max do considerably better in low light. After that, use a third-party app that allows you to manually control the ISO and shoot in a higher bit rate. Keep the ISO as low as possible. So Cinema P3 or BeastCam or Filmic Pro, etc. would be good.
If have any recommendations other than filmic pro that has ProRes format if so beastcam or cinema P3 for ProRes or they about the same if they can help you shoot in ProRes thank You.
I’d like to something of value in a recent discovery. It evolves around the purchase of the Moment 18mm lens. My iPhone 14 Pro Max with the 18mm on the default camera app hops between the three lenses for what it thinks is the best one due to lighting. Simply unusable! So I turn to the Moment app. Cool features for being free BUT the video setting loses the IPhones native stabilization even with the stabilizing turned on in the Moment app. Not good. Which brings me to this comment section and app of topic. This camera app, on the free version, KEEPS the native stabilization and HDR setting! This is a deal breaker as I am currently in a “run and gun” project game hunting outdoors. My setup is simple using the Joby 1K tripod as my handle. (Thanks, Casey) And for those wondering the Moment 18mm V2 lens DOES have dark spots on the sides with the 14 Pro Max. Annoying but I’ll just crop the image in post. Anyway, I hope this insight is useful.
It’s very subjective. Mainly just UI for me. And that wasn’t really in any order TBH. I haven’t used any of these other apps extensively and so it takes time to get used to things.
@@iphoneographers thank you for your reply I think it’s a toss up between cinema P3 or beastcam but think Cinema P3 has more to offer but could be looking at like eye candy I play around or watch TH-cam videos about the features but definitely one or the other for good replacement for filmic pro thank you again!

The dealbreaker for me is that it doesn't have manual iso or shutter speed control for video, which I'd argue is essential for film making. Especially if you want to nail that cinematic look.
@@iphoneographers You can change the exposure of the shot which changes the ISO, but you don’t get control over the shutter speed. Edit: Oh wait lol I found it, manual exposure mode was tucked into the settings and I only just found it. Thanks!

@@iphoneographers It's something I like strangely enough, plus the large timer that's easy to see. I often find I have to check the timer moving and often it's not with the native camera an/or Filmic, I've missed tapping the button due to a hand injury; this will be quicker to spot.
I just purchased the full app two minutes ago, it's Good to have another photo/video app. I've been using Filmic for a few years but too many eggs in one basket isn't good.
I enjoyed your video and will sub now! Cheers! I'm glad I stumbled on this one.
Hi, I am a UK viewer of this video, which is very informative and helpful. When you come out of the App, does it retain the settings, or do you have to reset over again?. Many thanks. Terry Dasvis
It will retain the key settings like video codec and frame rate, but not everything. Thanks for watching!
@@iphoneographers Many thanks for your quick and helpful reply.
Good video! Can you change the shutter speed with the paid version?
Select "Manual" Exposure mode and you can change ISO and shutter speed. Available in free version - no need to upgrade.
Yep. 👆🏻
Didn't know this one. Looks impressive.
Great video. What are you going to do now that Moment lenses are no longer compatible with the iPhone 14 pro/max? Do you have experience with Sandmarc? Who would you say is the new leader in lenses for iPhones?
Moment and other brands lenses are compatible with iphone 14, you just need the right cover or cage.
I like Moment, Sandmarc and Beastgrip. I don’t have my Moment case yet, but from what I’ve seen the lenses actually do work. Once I get a case/cage I’ll be testing them on the channel to confirm.
@@iphoneographers smallrig just released its iPhone 14 serie cage.
How is the quality on the StaCam app? Compared to FilmicPro
Can't find any information regarding gimbal support. How is that roadmap going?
You might ask the developer they’re pretty good at responding to find out when/if that’ll be implemented… www.blackburnapps.com/contact.php
What about gimbal support? Do any of these Filmic Pro alternatives include any?
Some do, some don’t. This one does not. But others like ProTake or Moment, etc. do. This video might help… th-cam.com/video/xsucDl7Tivw/w-d-xo.html
What about stabilization..accessible?
Multiple varieties of stabilization just like FiLMiC Pro.
Can you use this to record with OBS by connecting it to a PC via USB? Filmic pro had that feature.
You can connect via HDMI with a clean feed, but I have not tried using OBS. Seems like it should work though.
One thing that I really like(d) about filmic had noting to do with the actual photography, but that it names the files with date and time. Apple’s automatic naming is completely useless in that regard and metadata can get lost when transferring and copying files. Is there a way to get this naming natively and how do other apps handle this?
CinemaP3 uses CYYMMDD_000001 as file name convention when saving locally. No time, but a date and a counter
Does it have a clean HDMI out feature?
No, that’s something I can’t find and hope they add.
Not currently. I appreciate the feedback.
Bummer looking for an alternative with that any other application have it?
MoviePro and ProTake have clean HDMI output
yes, it does.
I just discovered this app last week. The dev is very responsive. App is pretty cool
How do you message the dev?
Sure, this app will do the desqueeze. So will most of them actually like BeastCam or MoviePro or ProTake, etc.
@@iphoneographers Cool! Like the app in this video good alternative app to filmic pro
@@iphoneographers so beastcam you can do ProRes if so I want that one than cinema P3 app
You can shoot ProRes in either of those apps.
@@iphoneographers definitely a big feature that was missed. But I appreciate you bringing it to their attention to update the app
There are no options to export files from within the App - just the media viewer. Use the "Files" app to access the files which are stored in CinemaP3/Documents/
You can also connect your iPhone to a Mac and access the files using Finder.
Very professional and very informative. I have subscribed to the channel. Thank you for the video.
Thanks for watching and subbing!
This was brilliant, thank you. I am going to download it right now 🙂
As expected, it’s a really good app, but… I have a start/stop Bluetooth remote control that came with both of my iPhone and iPad tripods, but they don’t work with the app, which is a nuisance so I have contacted the developer to see if there’s something in settings that I need to do and, if not, to ask if they can include the remote control feature in a future update.
I purchased filmic pro, but now it not working in iphone xs, will you suggest best pro app for my phone
I won't pay for a subscription but I do have Filmic Legacy. But I'm really liking Cinema P3 and use it over Filmic.
Is Filmic Pro the only camera app that provides 2nd monitor (ex.-2nd iPhone) live preview? So far that is the one remaining feature that makes it hard to cut ties with Filmic Pro, for my needs. Without that feature I need to go with DIY mirror gadgets. ;-)
Some of my projects involve working with puppets where I need to be in front of (back) camera and still have a live preview of shot.
MoviePro has a remote app as well. You might check it out as an option.
Does any alternative to filmic pro has the „real“ LOG format? I can’t find this Information on the web
Filmic pro legacy, varlens, relens , cinema p3
Great video as always. Does this support higher than 16khz when connected to a Bluetooth mic? Also are there presets for settings, and support for anamorphic lenses?
I don’t know about Bluetooth mics, but yes, you can do presets, and there is support for anamorphic. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing looks like a great app for starting out with.
Thanks for the great video. Question, do this app allows the mic to be muted while recording, thank you in advance?
I haven’t found that feature. I know FiLMiC Pro has that.
Has anyone else noticed that the non-subscription version of Filmic Pro doesn't work if you don't have internet connection?
The „subscription“ (aka „bought previously“ information) sticks after you open the app with internet connection and you can open the app offline. For me it took three or four times, for others the information sticks after first opening right away. - Seems like something minor, but that implementation is one of the reasons why I no longer use filmic pro. If you do not use the app very often, there is a realistic chance, you open it up in a remote location and it will not work because the app have not called home for a while and needs confirmation first - my personal nightmare
It’s a bug I’m told and being fixed ASAP. Should only happen once.
Can you please let us know how the log footage is being worked upon using this app??
It’s a logarithmic curve, so it’s pretty nice. Does work with ProRes, too. Been testing it out some recently.
Downloading it now
Hallo, Could you do a full tutorial of the app? I tried it and it's a real alternative to Filmic Pro. Andreas from Germany
Definitely looking into doing a more in-depth version.
Neat. I haven't heard of this app until now. Great price.
I can't believe this app and the native iPhone video app does not have a video pause record button on it.
Yeah, I'd like that feature to, I had it once on something but cannot remember what. Hopefully some day we'll get that option. I prefer editing (my way of keeping order) like that as there's less clips involved.
What’s pause record do? Meaning if you shooting you can pause the video then pick up where left off?
Does CinemaP3 work with a Bluetooth mic? Do you know any others besides FilmicPro that do?
Have not tested that yet, so I can’t answer. We’ll be doing more stuff soon.
Is there anything that you missed out from this app instead filmic pro?
Yes. I’ll probably do a follow-up after I use it more. Main ones initially are no gimbal controls, no clean HDMI output, and no ProRes log. But it’s got a lot as is and appears the developer is open to adding features.
Does the app have a clean HDMI OUTPUT?
No, not that I can find. Seems an easy one to add though.
@@iphoneographers what’s clean hdmi do?
I found it does have clean HDMI and it works great! The white balance set tool is great. The x2 and x3 zooms work great, too. Clean HDMI is an HDMI signal without the application’s reticles and controls that appear on the phone’s screen. Adios, Filmic Pro! Thanks for making me aware of this app; I use it now for video recording and live streaming! Cheers!
Ive already tried this app, its amazing… but the lut im not understood, ar not so great!!
Exploring them now, but good to know.
@@iphoneographers for me the colors are sooo intense!!
Can you change the apperture with this app, just like the native camera app of the iphone? TIA
You can’t change the aperture with any of these apps as it’s fixed due to the iPhone hardware. But you can manually control the exposure with the shutter and ISO.
Any black friday saled app you know and recommendation?
Haven’t seen any sales yet, but P3 is free for basic controls and $6.99 for the full set, so it’s a good deal.
This was awesome! Thanks for sharing. I was disappointed in visiting their site and seeing that they don't offer an Android version. Real bummer. Do you recommend any others as an alternative to Filmic Pro. I will not be paying subscription going forward.
Look at MCPro24fps for Android
Thanks for the video. I want shoot in Log format and color grade in Davinci. Does this app got a Log format that competes Filmic pro?
I haven’t done side by side comparisons (but I probably will), but it’s good. Have used it on a few shoots recently.
Can we shoot flat profile with the app
They have several options for log video.
What would be a better app for low lighting or taking videos in low light?
The kind of phone you’re using is probably the most important thing. The newer iPhones, really starting with the 12 Pro Max do considerably better in low light. After that, use a third-party app that allows you to manually control the ISO and shoot in a higher bit rate. Keep the ISO as low as possible. So Cinema P3 or BeastCam or Filmic Pro, etc. would be good.
@@iphoneographers Thank you very much!!!
I’m confused If you already have filmic pro before they switch to weekly subscription can you continue to use it without weekly subscription
Yes. But not the new V7 version. That will be subscription. The latest version of V6 will stay put.
Ordered pro. Thanks.
Awesome channel, I am going to give P3 a try
I will tested! Thanks again! Hug’s from Portugal
bought it and it seems to work well... might even like it better than filmic..
If have any recommendations other than filmic pro that has ProRes format if so beastcam or cinema P3 for ProRes or they about the same if they can help you shoot in ProRes thank
You.
The main thing is FiLMiC Pro has a proprietary log for their ProRes. But other apps have ProRes, and are pretty much the same.
Great job Blake.
(Thanks, Casey)
And for those wondering the Moment 18mm V2 lens DOES have dark spots on the sides with the 14 Pro Max. Annoying but I’ll just crop the image in post. Anyway, I hope this insight is useful.
does this app allow you set your manual controls? I can't find how to control my iso or shutter speed
Yes. You switch the exposure controls to manual in the setting menu.
Why you pick beastcam #2 and cinema P3 #3 is there any obvious reasons why or not
It’s very subjective.

Since you already have a phone, it’s always nice to have options with apps, etc. But yeah, definitely go for whatever camera you want to use.
You'll never catch me paying over $100/year for a video capture app, even one that until now I've used all the time. Someone should explain the substitution principle to the folks over at Filmic Pro. That was a nice F you to open my app to yesterday. 0/10 already switched.
Just bought a copy, thanks. BTW I might stay with Filmic Pro IF the price is not too insane.
Yeah, I’m going to stick with FiLMiC Pro for a bit just to see, but the price is set (for now anyway) at $49.99 USD per year.
Thank you
Thanks for sharing.
18 MB/s as max bit rate is very low compared to Filmic pro and Beastcam app which offer up to 150 MB/s as far as i remember.
18 MB/s=144Mb/sec so they are equal
For some reason they list it as megabytes versus megabits, but it’s very similar.
This is very helpful. Thanks 👍🏼
If you had pick another app not filmic what be second go to app for most projects using anamorphic
That’s a subjective call… But right now my favorites are probably BeastCam, Cinema P3, Protake and MoviePro.
No lens anamorphic options?
It has anamorphic desqueeze options.
Promising!
The dealbreaker for me is that it doesn't have manual iso or shutter speed control for video, which I'd argue is essential for film making. Especially if you want to nail that cinematic look.
P3 camera app has full manual control, not sure what you’re referring to. But yes, manual control is essential for professional quality video.
@@iphoneographers You can change the exposure of the shot which changes the ISO, but you don’t get control over the shutter speed.
