Nice one for ordering, welcome to the SP gang! Yup knowing your gear is such a big factor in making music. It should be a source of inspiration, not a hindrance
Love this! Just bought one two weeks ago but have been really busy and havent gotten to mess with it yet. But i did start collecting some sample packs and sounds. Looking forward to using it but definitely intimidated by learning the workflow. Thanks for making something for the absolute beginners!
Just ordered my SP mkII today, I have been wanting to make beats since the Golden era. Music lover, collector, aficionado, finally I’m making it happen. Good points you made here. TY PS I’m looking for other beat makers/SP 404 mk2 users around Aptos/Santa Cruz CA. area. Holla back✌️
I think the dark side of tip 3 is that it's not just about learning the features, it's just as much about getting to grips with the entire workflow paradigm. Things like accepting that you have to commit to the effects and be prepared to go back more than a number of steps if it turns out you applied a bit too much reverb on that hi hat that you already resampled and printed as a stem because you had to free up the FX buses for other stuff. I find this to be the hardest part coming from the MPC and DAW workflow of working with inserts and sends. I'm not sure the SP is for me no matter how fast I get at navigating the features to be honest.
yes, after you learn what "non destructive" is, you want to keep it separable! yet perhaps it's a reason to return to a simpler, minimal era. (infinite tracks, etc. ask to be filled, if they are there)
I think the honest answer is that the SP wasn't isn't and won't be a real beatmaking device. It is a sound creator, a fast sampler. Stop trying to make songs on this, try to make simple beats that sound freaky ... and then export it to a sequencer.
@@bakerman3039 I agree, that's how you need to think about the SP to remain sane. Yet, Roland seems to work so hard on turning it into a (miserable) groovebox.
@@bakerman3039 tell that to those making songs and beats on it. ; - ) but your point is well taken, it is intended as a minimal device. @@VJFranzK I would say the nice things about the Sp MK2 are the effects which really nicely emulate the older Sps, the good polyphony and the Bus effects. You shall sample your own sounds, mangle it through the effects and at the end you could build a nice loop with the little pattern sequencer (not Tr mode). That's it. That's the machine. I was very dissapointed that the 3.0 didn't get us new effects. The effects are the main reason to buy this machine.
Really good tips, I’ve been watching your videos about the MK2 and just beat making in general, and have learned so much already. Appreciate the effort!

I really need to spend more time with the sp. there are 2 things that I find discouraging though. 1 is that I truly love having an actual written manual to refer to. I’m wondering if the sp is recognizing one of the samples as corrupt and not displaying the rest? When I put the sd in the pc to view the samples they are all there and work fine.
