Nature never ceases to amaze. These plants are so very similar to Cannabis. The tops(flowers) also get a very strong Cannabis like smell. They grow quite tall too. I was so confused when I first encountered this plant. Go Cleome’s! 🌱💚
I grow evening primrose as a trap crop for japanese beetles. This is something I started by happenstance when a wild primrose chanced into my garden. I saw the giant hawk moth at night working the plants. My plants died off for over four years. We were building a new deck and scuffed the soil up and plants popped up after four years.

I tried domes, no domes, closer/further from light and with little to no hope I brought it out to my mini green house I recently built. It was 4-5 weeks old and very pale looking.... Within 48hrs it popped into life looking green and healthier.... Nothing different other than first week of May weather in 6b zone. It continued to improve and up pot etc accordingly and I have my first one in my front garden. With these tips in positive I'll be better able to germinate and fill my own gardens with memories. It's called Rocky Mountain Bee Plant... In NM the natives call it wild spinach... It's eaten and used to make an ingredient in black paint for making traditional pottery in the old way...

So I ordered a package of Rocky Mountain bee plant and found out it kind of likes poor crappy soil etc so I gave them to my mom. I was looking at pictures and thought how familiar they looked and then I saw the name Spider plant…. 😑 what a moment these were flowers my mother grew all the time growing up. The name was the only thing that threw me off.
I started mine just this month lol. Just outside in a pot but I have had pretty good germination. They are all about 2 inches tall now and I’ll be transplanting shortly as they do have their first real leaves now. I’m excited to see these grow.

I remember this flower so much and, So badl wanna grow it haha. I do have a question! Do they grow theyir flowers in the first eyar?? What I mean is, they sprout, grow leaves and upwards and everything, and then their flowers?? I know some plants like to grow their roots out more to store food, and then the next years they start making flowers. So is Cleome a flower that grows flowers in the first year??
Which growing zone are you in? We just moved to Zone 4b and found the front planter bed filled with beautiful, blooming Cleomes. I collected about a cup of seed from the pods in about 20 minutes! I'd prefer to sow them after our last frost but how best to store them until then? I understand that these flowers reseed well. thanks!

I was given this plant last year. It smells like Marijuana. It goes well with my early spring time bulb of Crown Imperial which smells like skunk. I tend to smell up my neighbourhood.
It's now the end of October in North Carolina (Zone 4), and my beautiful cleomes are near the end of their life. Do I just pull them up by the roots? That seems brutal.

Some of the seeds that I saved from last years purple cleome are taupe, some are gray, most of them are black. What does the non black seeds indicate immature seeds? Or different color flowers?

Do you use capillary mats in your trays? Really enjoy your series. Do you use hot water to seal the ends of your flowers when you make bouquets? I watch Sarah Raven videos too and she always do that but they’re old so I wasn’t sure if it needs to be done. Thanks
I dont use any mats, I just water with a fine mist nozzle on the hose. I do put some flowers, like dahlias, in hot water. I think it really just depends on the type of flower.
I’ve never seen cleome before and when you showed us the growing foliage I was like “what a minute am I on the right video?” Haha. Although it’s not related how much cold can poppies tolerate as I’m thinking of growing some Icelandic and Shirley poppies for the first time. I live in zone 7 and I’m winter sowing so I’m wondering if I could grow them without a hoop house or frost blanket.
If you're planting in the fall, I would definitely direct sow. Ive never grown icelandic poppies outside of the hoophouse, so I'm not sure how much cold they can really take. However, I have had shirley poppies overwinter without any cover. I sometimes lose them if its really cold though, so may a frost blanket would help to make sure that they plants survive. Good luck!
That's an awful lot of fussing for cleomes! In CT they reseed very well and 'out of bounds' volunteers can be moved back into the garden. Once you have them, they will keep reseeding - no need to fuss like this!
When the seed pods are fully dried (but haven't yet opened on their own) you can hold a can under them and slide your thumb and forefinger down the pod and it will release many seeds into the can. Or, as I said above - just let them reseed on their own.

They are magnaimous planted in a large group. But just one grows very big

Last year I only had a few per pot even though I used a good numberof seeds. The fewer, the bigger. This year I have a bunch per pot unexpectedly, but they are thriving and growing. You might want to use more seeds than you think you need, then thin them out to your preference.

Nope, no poison ivy. I planted several vines on the fence - moonvines, Spanish flag vine, hyacinth beans, malabar spinach, and cathedral bell vines. Thanks!

It does NOT need to be staked... I've seen it survive flash floods in the desert just fine...
