Some of the TH-cam garden channels have people who are overly perky with a grating voice. Your voice is quite soothing, like having a conversation with a friend. Thank you for your videos!
How fun. I grow teddy bear sunflowers every year. They have large, dark green leaves on a shorter stem. The flowers have huge fluffy heads too. I hope you love yours as much as I do.
Thanks, Steph! My grandmother, 93, loves profusion zinnias. Every year, we would get them at our local garden center. We used to fill my whole car up with flowers. Now she is in assisted living, so we don't go flower shopping anymore. I grow a lot of marigolds. Last year, the rabbits ate half of them. Never had that problem before. Thanks for sharing your list! I can't wait to do the gomphrena drift this year. Take care
Hi Tina, thank you so much for sharing this beautiful memory with us. I know that each year when I see cosmos it also brings me so much joy as I have a very similar memory. In my Q&A vid a few weeks back, I described that my vavo (grandmother in portuguese), also had a large drift of cosmos each year, and they fondly remind me of her. I can't believe the rabbits ate your marigolds!! Its incredible. You never know what they'll eat.
I love Marigold , I plant it all over and collect my own seeds and plant them next year 😏cheapest flower to have plenty of , and morning glory for the fences 👍
Zinnias, a flower within a flower, is hard to beat Steph. It's hard to say which is my favorite, but Zinnias is right there. Alyssum is great and self seeds up here:) One "spiller" we grew and loved was Silver Falls :) Have a great Easter !! Cheers J&C 🌱😊🌱
Hi Colleen & Jason. Zinna's are ROCKSTARS! Love them so much. And much less fuss than Dahlias. Yes, allysum is a great self seeder. I love when it pops up here and there. The silver falls seeds well also! I had it in containers one year, and i found 2 or 3 seedlings near where they were growing. Happy Easter!!
Great video with so many ideas! Zinnia are so easy to grow and I grow them every year. Profusion Zinnia, Purple Prince, Scarlet, Strawberry Fields gomphrena, white Ayssum from the Dollar Tree, Nasturtium Empress of India are some of the flowers I'll grow from seed. I love seeing your purple gomphrena border; it's stunning! Thanks for the tip about soaking the seeds. TFS!
Watched this video again. Learned new ideas 😊 Here in Michigan, can't wait to get outside, few more weeks. Did break the temp. yesterday, 70's. Thank you 🌻
Great lesson -- you're such a good teacher! Seeing your garden is a thrill -- especially your beautiful success with the GOMPHRINA! I'm going to look for it. Thanks! Regarding the "lime" series of zinnia varieties -- and once I grew those exquisite zinnias, some of the other zinnia varieties seem plain. But the "lime" series do not reproduce seeds so well as the others in my experience, so it was difficult saving seeds for the next season. And that might also explain how pricey they can be. Thank you also for indicating where you purchased your seeds; that saves a lot of time. Happy gardening!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge of plants abd planting. Learned some studd i did not know. Appreciate that you did not rush through everything and that you spoke clearly not turning your head away from the camera which does deflect the clarity of voice. Althought we live out in the southwest desert can still plant these plants. Probably earler than you will for sure. Enjoying them for awhile. Sunfliwers are some of my favorites and that last ine had never seen before. Thank you again. God bless
I planted my Zinnia and Basil seeds in an old rusty wheelbarrow on May 1 here in Arkansas after weeks of heavy rains and freezes. They germinated in about 10 days and flowered in the middle of June. They the only flower I planted that has attracted pollinators to my garden. I also have a galvanized tub with Marigolds, but I don't see any pollinators going to them so next Spring I will be dedicating a full 4 feet of garden bed to Zinnias and Basil. Not only are they beautiful but they serve a purpose in feeding my pollinators.
Good job! Zinnias like warm soil to germinate. Thet love raised beds. Cosmos do also. Direct sowing demands warm soil. Profusion zinnias do best when set out as plants, not direct sown. You are definitely right that everyone should read and reread seed packets, And keep them for reference. Zone 6B in KY.
This was very informative. I love love love my Zinnias and Sunflowers. I planted so many of them in yogurt cups, different sizes, colors and have them on a card table in the living room window, south window. Within 2 days they were coming up. I was given a Black Sunflower last year, saved the seeds, they're coming up. Plus I planted other plants too. Enough for family, friends and neighbors. First thing I check on in the morning. I did not know you can pot Zinnias and Sunflowers, have to check the size. Some of my sunflowers were taller than the shed. Thank you for the great tips 🌻
Great way to reuse those yogurt cups! Sharing plants is so fun. Black eyed Susan's are a classic beauty that pollinators love! Thanks for sharing Connie, and happy gardening!! 🌱🌻🌸
Thank you for your video. I just brought a bunch of flower seeds from amazon .some are sprouting, and some are not .I'm getting ready to plant some heirlooms, and I'll see what grows
You were so informative and being a beginner myself and terrified of myself not knowing what I was doing you helped me overcome my fear. I will definitely watch this tomorrow and probably every time I go out to the yard to thank you
Hello, so glad I came upon your channel! I am also from MA, zone 6B, and have been gardening for about 10 years. You have provided some great info, thank you!! Looking forward to seeing more!
Thanks for all the info. I always enjoy your clear explanation in each video, I especially like when you go shopping and give rhe details of plants. Your videos are very helpful and easy to follow.
This is very simple, clear and educational video. I am trying to grow flowers from seeds (because I dont want to waste so much on buying seedlings), and these are great suggestions! As someone who lives in the tropics, only my zinnia grew from seeds. I have no luck in marigolds, cosmos and petunias😅 I will try again to grow more. I can't wait for my zinnias to start blooming
I just discovered your channel a few months ago. My Home Depot finally got the hellebores in. I was able to purchase 3 for the price of one at my local garden center. I love your videos!
Another great video, Steph. So excited for this year's annual seed plants. Last year I planted tall zinnia from seed in a container and you are so right, it was too tall and leggy. So for this year I got Zinnia - Profusion Cherry (14-18' tall) and Zinnia Dwarf Pepito mix (8-10"tall). I couldn't help myself though, and since I loved your Zinnia Queen Lime Red, I will also be growing them from seed in the ground. Looking forward to the TipTop Alaska Salmon Nasturtiums along with Alyssum Violet Queen. And last but not least, my favorite, Hyacinth Bean. Can't wait to see all of your plants this year!
I always pinch my zinnias as seedlings which makes them bushy and strong from the start. Also a silica foliar spray(pH of 5.5) helps make the whole process so much easier.
I just started my teddy bear this year they came up quick. I can't wait to see how they look as well. Thank you for your advice Steph. God bless and stay safe 🙏 ❤️
Hi there! Welcome to the channel. There are many things you can grow here, takes a little time to figure it out. The best thing to do is to observe your light conditions (sun vs. shade), and whether your soil stays moist for a long time after a rain, or if it dries fairly quickly. This can help you narrow things down. As for annuals like the ones shown in this video, they can be grown almost anywhere as long as its sunny.
Thank you so much for all of this information. I am about to sow seeds, and your advice is so helpful. Plus, you've mentioned some seeds I haven't tried before. I'm so excited to go look for Gomphrena seeds. Also, thank you for providing pictures. This is super helpful.
Thank you…Great informative video. Makes me want to get out and start planting. I might try sunflowers once more. Last year they did so well …before the buds opened completely those dang squirrels chewed them off at the flower. I didn’t get a one! Have a beautiful spring 🌻
Great video, Steph, with lots of great information. You come across as very encouraging, based on the experience you've had growing the various plants. I really appreciate that.
Loved your video! This year is the first time I started flowers in a windowsill and I’ve loved it! I’m going to try other flowers that you’ve suggested next year! Thanks so much!!
I have gomphrena started indoors. I hope mine will look as beautiful as yours! Trying sunflower, nasturtium and alyssum for first time this year. Zinnia are an all time favorite of mine. Thanks for sharing your favorites and your wisdom 😊
Great video! You listed a lot of my annual favorites (cosmos and marigolds) and a couple I'm going to try this year (allysum and gomphrena). Thanks so much for the variety recommendations!!
Great seed starting information for everyone. I remember as a beginner gardener, not paying a lick of attention to seed starting depth...now I think, how could I NOT have done that?!! I had gomphrena for the first time last year too...amazing annual. I didn't order any seeds and am kicking myself! LOL thanks for the lovely video.
Thank you so much! I've made so many of these mistakes as well, which is why I love to share what I've learned in hopes it will help others. Still time to pick up some seeds at local stores and nursuries if you wanted. Thanks again.
Very informative video. I am trying a thumbelina mix of dwarf zinnia (6-8” height) in a small southeast facing small garden built up with stack stones behind our garage. Hopefully the heat of the spring sun will keep the seed warm enough to germinate! Happy Easter!
I’m so excited to finally come across a gardener to follow from MA! Can’t wait to binge watch all ofyour videos! If you don’t mind me asking, what area are you from? I have homes in Central MA as well as Boston. Do you have any favorite nurseries that you frequent?
Oh, I love all of these suggestions so much! Zinnias and Nasturtiums are probably my two favorites, personally, but these are all wonderful for beginners...and for kids, honestly! 😊💕🌱
Thank you so much for the information! I'm going to plant Gomphrena seeds this year. How many packets did you plant in your border? They are gorgeous 😍 I appreciate all of your expertise!!😊
Hi there, You're so welcome! While I'm not an expert, I absolutely love sharing what I know. Any excuse to talk about plants lol. I used 1 pack of seeds.
Very informative you covered a lot of bases for a first-time grower. But I do have a question.. I don't have much sun here so I bought a grow light and put seedlings on my patio with the grow light they are not doing well. Should I have them inside with the grow light? Zinnias and cosmos
Great program! I would love to try the Zahara zinnia and saw the one you are growing in a magazine and it looked fabulous in the front border. Also the cactus variety of Zinnia is the best one for pollinators. I always have trouble with germinating nasturtiums. I have a dozen that came up but some varieties I was looking forward to growing never germinated .
Some of the TH-cam garden channels have people who are overly perky with a grating voice. Your voice is quite soothing, like having a conversation with a friend. Thank you for your videos!
Thank you so much 😊
It’s because gardening is exciting!!!
Your voice is comforting
I’m having better luck starting seeds this year by using lettuce containers and closing the lid. Seeds love the warmth.
Hi Will, Sounds like winter sowing, recycled containers used as mini greenhouses. Glad its working well for you 🌱

These are all great flowers! Love the zinnias. Protect your sunflower seeds from hungry critters. Start them indoors.
How fun. I grow teddy bear sunflowers every year. They have large, dark green leaves on a shorter stem. The flowers have huge fluffy heads too. I hope you love yours as much as I do.
They sound so cute! Excited to try them. Thanks for sharing!

Love alyssum so much!!! It’s like my garden is in the sky amongst clouds of the tiny white flowers and they smell so good when it gets a cool breeze
What a beautiful description! 🌱

Thanks for the tips! I’m trying sweet alyssum, and after seeing your gomphrenq border last year, those are some on my list!
You are so welcome! Alyssum is also very easy, and looks great spilling out of containers. Have fun!
Well done, very informative 👍
Thank you!

Very nice ❤
Great information. Thanks for sharing 🙂
Very informative video. I am trying a thumbelina mix of dwarf zinnia (6-8” height) in a small southeast facing small garden built up with stack stones behind our garage. Hopefully the heat of the spring sun will keep the seed warm enough to germinate! Happy Easter!
Sounds great Jane, hope they do well for you. Happy Easter!!
Thanks for the awesome video.
Glad you like them Carmela. I agree, great seeds to start with kids! Thank you!
Thank you so much for the information! I'm going to plant Gomphrena seeds this year.
How many packets did you plant in your border? They are gorgeous 😍
I appreciate all of your expertise!!😊
Hi there, You're so welcome! While I'm not an expert, I absolutely love sharing what I know. Any excuse to talk about plants lol. I used 1 pack of seeds.
Thank you, excellent tutorial😍
Thank you so much Jo! Hoping the Zahara do well. Nastursius have a hard outer shell. Try soaking them overnight before sowing them, see if it helps.
