Please people i beg you don't make this character get nerfed, i love him too much to see him leave me. Get cyrax nerfed, sure, but leave this man out of the patch notes for now. He's going to be so hard to nerf so give them time to do it properly. Forgot to mention one more important thing, Johnny is so far the only character who can punish his opponents if he spends meter after a successful throw escape. Predicting a throw and spending a bar to disable your opponent from throwing for a few seconds is very powerful in a game like this.
Can only Johnny block the opponent from throwing? I remember hearing about this feature before the game came out but i didnt know if it was a character exclusive thing
@@Henry-iz7iv yeah, as of now Johnny Cage is the only character who can disable his opponent from throwing. After a successful throw escape, you can spend meter to break your opponent’s arm and their forward and back throws become unavailable for a short period of time.
The problem is he has way too many 50/50s and no real punishment. He's very safe on block and can hit you with any type of move at any time. I wonder what nrs was thinking when they thought of this?
When it comes to Johnny in this game, you really have to figure out the player more than figure out the character. Since he’s so op, many Johnny players tend to get caught doing the same thing over again and lose their ability to think of all of his moves. As a Johnny player, I can confirm this. If you’re opponent doesn’t change up the way they play they can get folded extremely quickly if you know when and where to attack. As a character overall he’s definitely one of the best, but the player is what holds him back
That applies to all characters though as far as how good the player is and how well they know how to use them. Johnny’s just capable of doing more and playing at a higher level than the rest of the characters 🤦♂️ definitely the best character in the game by far and too op

I didn’t even realize how strong his parry was. I have always said that Jonny was number one with raiden and baraka fighting for second. But man, now there is no one to challenge him. He is now on his own level and it scares me lmao
I always wondered why Johnny got the 2 frame start up parry that essentially lets you go into full combo, that can ALSO be enhanced for faster start up etc etc. Meanwhile Reiko gets a 8-10 (I don’t remember exactly) frame parry that doesn’t combo, which is essentially useless when everyone can throw a 7 frame punch anyway. Enhancing Reiko parry doesn’t even make it faster either :(
To anyone watching this video, a patch was released on the 26th of October. Kameo damage and mechanics were tweaked. Cyrax doesn’t work the same anymore. With that said, Johnny was untouched and is still a very scary character 😀

He definitely can’t fight full screen….. People don’t use their movement and distance control at all in this game until you get to the really high levels. I’ll give an example of an “OP” JC player. Guy was spamming his “mix” all game and I blocked it every time. (All you have to do is block low and react to any overhead since EVERY overhead in this game is react-able) he would go into d1 EVERY time and I’d block it EVERY time and he never changed up once besides trying to grab like a scrub and got destroyed. My point is people really don’t try to learn at all just walk you down and get their YT combos off while lacking basic fighting game fundamentals. Yet they cry about a character being OP because truth is they are TRASH! Johnny is very good in the right hands but literally only right up in your face. A snidely if the same skill level of a Johnny shits on him every time.
I also want to add for anyone reading this that I talked to a couple guys about and they didn’t even know this simple easy trick. When a mix up character is using a mix FOCUS MORE ON THEIR CHARACTER!!!!!!!!! Not yours and it helps to react to the overhead. I can’t believe when I tell people this all the time they say “oh I didn’t know that” 😅

What most people don't know, is that you don't have to wait the entire dance for the fb to be unblockable. As soon as he grabs the belt, that's when it does, so he has lots of frames where it is unblockable. He truly has it all.
They always make my main cage super strong and annoying in every game and all I can do is stay humble and try to teach people how to fight it lol. Imo he needs his frame data toned down a little bit, 114 should not be plus on literally every hit and his fatal should cost 2-3bars to dash out of. For any Johnny’s out there btw, for the inevitable cyrax nerf, start learning Stryker
He's definitely not impossible to fight, but theres a point when it becomes unfun to play against EVERYONE using the same character because he's just objectively stronger than a lot of the cast.
I hope they make him slower but hits a tiny bit harder. Hes way too fast and waaaaayyy too safe. Not to mention a full combo does around only 35% BUT! he will lin you from one end to the corner
I imagine they’ll remove some of his insane Block and Hit advantage and keep is general speed/gimmicks. I’m guessing balance changes will come after this season of Kombat league ends in about a week
What exactly was the thought process for this character? He is safe in almost every string, has a lot of meterless launcher, a couple of pseudo 50/50 that lead into full combo. Paired with Cyrax the couple of unsafe strings become safe as well and it is almost impossible to stop him.

Literally do the game's tutorial, learn about upblocking, and actually, and I mean ACTUALLY check out Johnny's frames and attack properties (like the big scary +15, which is actually a high and has a giant gap before it comes out) before you make a clown out of yourself with statements like that.
Gotta be honest, i was having a lot of fun with the game at first, but everyone playing the same characters and kameos and doing the same long ass combos over and over is getting really boring real fast, especially with the massive damage some characters can do, it's just too much, we need a balance patch soon

@LappyAwoo I barely started playing online in mk11 in the last few seasons and we're missing a lot of the old features like playback, being able to save and favorite those to learn what you did wrong. Plus I think the top 6 players in the game are pretty oppressive. There needs to be a balance patch

They should have made Johnny more like in MK11 to where if you're gonna make most Johhny strings safe, then take away most of his 50/50s. That was Johnny's biggest weakness in Mk11. But he wasn't near as OP as people said he was in Mk11.
OMFG I WAS WONDERING WHY I LOST SHADES AND MY HYPED NUT PUNCH. The fact that removing the glasses cosmetic actually gives you hard disadvantage is honestly crazy and I thought they nerfed Johnny til people did it to me.

As a casual player its frustrating to play against Johnny because of all the + frames that are less than obvious to punish. As a pro player its frustrating because of all of the + frames. Sounds like he needs a nerf

There IS counter play but it’s easier for people to just whine at their own skill issues. Just buff everyone else to level the playing field god knows Sub Zero players would kill for it.
I just want to see him more punishable on some of his launching strings not all specifically f34, and maybe a small start up nerf to his d1 to stop Johnnys from mashing out of every characters pressure that has a 12-14 frame mids after strings where his turn should be over. I don’t want him to get “sub-zeroed”
Every single one of his launchers (212, f34, f124, bf3EX) is launch punishable if thrown out without cover from kameo. Please learn what upblocking is. It's a new mechanic for MK1, but the game's tutorial explains it really nice.
F21 leads into a 50/50 where you’re gonna eat 30% at least if you up block and guess wrong. f124 is already death on block for johnny w out up block. Now that cyrax got a well needed nerf and flawless blocking now stops both meter build and chip it should be less oppressive. Even so, up block was not, prior to the update, and is not enough to level the playing field on its own. Especially online at higher levels, where you have to make a hard reads in sets where the ping can be up to 150ms and players can actually stagger and mix up effectively

And no, you should never have "level playing field" with a rushdown character in melee, unless you play another rushdown character or some specific anti-rushdown. Gotta get rid of this mentality that it is somehow unfair that Johnny beats you up close, but it's totally fine and fair that you beat Johnny full screen.
@@azazamat Just to be clear everything I’m saying is in regards to competitive play, not casual. johnny doesn’t get beat full screen. There are no hard counters to him. He has an 8 frame almost completely full screen special that also can armor thru projectiles if enhanced, a dash that allows him to get in free and easy if you don’t have the timing to dash cancel, a parry that beats just about any button, and safety on almost everything he does. Even if somehow none of those tools work just use one of the many kameos that ignore projectiles, let him get up close completely for free, or do both. You can turn your brain off with him and cruise thru the ranks like butter. No footsies, no neutral, no brains. Meanwhile you have characters that don’t even have useable mids This is a competitive multiplayer game. Fairness and having a level playing field should be second only to the “fun factor”. Johnny kinda takes a massive dump on both in his current state if you want to do anything other than play the mirror, which you can’t even switch to mid-set. When people who play Johnny don’t even need to block most of the match and can chip half your health bar it should probably be addressed. I don’t think it’s impossible to beat him but he has no bad match ups. he’s a crutch character anyone can pick up in 10 minutes or less at any rank lower than grandmaster, and at the higher levels it just turns into a one player game where you watch Johnny slowly punch your health bar away one chip at a time. This is the most fun NRS game I’ve played since MKX imo. My issue is with Johnnys kit and Johnny kit alone.
@frosty_trees I think we're playing two very different games then. Cause I have to work pretty hard for every win in ranked, with fundamentals, hard reading my opponent and properly timing my pressure. While said opponent on some braindead zoning garbage like Liu Kang, Sub-Zero or Rain just spams whole match without any thought or reason. And that's on top of Kenshi and his fun, but frustrating Sento stuff. Maybe if you play somewhere above first 5 ranks you'll actually see how to get out of Cage's pressure. But you won't get there if you keep being condescending and unwilling to spend some time actually understanding the match-up. Like, for example, Shadow Kick is a high and launchable on block, Dash is not immune to everything all the time, etc. As for "bad matchups" - that is a really bad requirement to have. It only shows that the character needs buffs. I don't think Injustice's Zod vs Luthor is an example of good balance. If you suck playing against rushdown - maybe try playing one to understand the game plan better. Though it is quite a bit harder than brainlessly spaming projectiles.
Johnny still has weaknesses. Zoners, hard matchups against certain characters like Astrah and Reiko, and also since he moves like a normal human visually, it is VERY easy to tell what moves he is gonna do so people can easily block, even crouch or high block late. Not to mention his dmg is very weak unless he has Cameos/Hype and Hype is difficult to pull off and use for the average player. He is balanced. And this is coming from a scorpion/Johnny main. I want Scorpion buffed to Johnnys lvl, not nerfed

Is he the best character in the game? Maybe. Does he have some tough matchups? Absolutely. Ashrah, Tanya, Geras, Reiko, Kenshi all give him a hard time. There’s probably more matchups that I’m missing but once the opponent knows how to block his strings it’s tough for him to open anybody up.

honestly, you may be trash and predictable because with kameos. He may have one of the most even matchup spreads in the game imo. Zoning is soooo nerfed in this game with the addition of kameos and how fast you build and keep meter.
Great video, I learned much from it. I hope NRS will not nerf him. Finally he is very good. In all previous games he was only good at the beginning then he became almost useless when people figured out his weaknesses.

I definitely agree he’s the most op. I play raiden and I have some trouble with very skilled Barakas but most are brain dead. Liu Kang has some of the problems Johnny has but just not as many. Reptile is good but not op, smoke is extremely punishable, and Kenshi takes skill and precision. You can’t just mistakenly be good with kenshi like you can Johnny

Im new to the game and I have 2 questions: 1. How can you tell when a move has armor by looking at the move list? 2. How do you perform a reverse counter? Is it with one of the "armored" moves? Or can it be any?
When looking at the move list hit Square which opens up other info about the moves. Especially useful for doing Brutalities so you know what Else you have to do to make them work. I believe Square is 1 on all controllers.
I think Johnny needs a very mild nerf, he doesn’t have projectiles and his air combat is really bland without kameo assists. That doesn’t mean he’s basic or average because Johnny is one of those characters who feels capable fighting alone and a kameo would only give him a few more benefits. Cyrax is also a major contributor for being the best kameo assist but outside of that, making Johnny less + on block and reducing the amount of style points he gets for the hype meter sounds fair enough. The Hype meter is really fun and unique only to him but it often leaves you vulnerable if you’re not careful or if you decide to take a risk for being punishable. That said, I think Johnny should be allowed to be this crazy and maybe down the line if he’s too crazy we might consider toning him down again.
He has a lot of strings that lead to full combos without cameos while everyone else has one or two. He hardly ever needs bar which means he can break your combo after you made an opening after losing half your life to block damage. He has lows an overheads for days and almost all of them are safe. I main smoke. He has lows an overheads to but they are not safe. Also smoke has no mid starters. A mild nerf wouldn't cutbit mate.
I won't lie man cyrax helps Johnny a lot but I only see a few people talking about it but Johnny/lao is really dumb as well I personally think it's a bit better but that just my thoughts.
bro what, no projectiles is a con, but hardly an issue because if you gave him one. You'd hardly even use it as Johnny shouldn't even be that far from the opponent. Air combat being bland isn't even an issue so I don't know why you mentioned that. Now he's not unfair, as tbh there are like 3 more unfair characters. Raiden, Baraka, Kenshi (kinda). SO I do agree that he maybe shouldn't be nerfed hard, but other characters should get broken shit as well.
@@coleforpresident5762 I only mentioned the air combat strings because a good deal of the cast can go with or without them for damage and combos, Sub Zero and Smoke being good examples, but the rest of the cast can go without those strings. That being said, yeah I do agree that the top 3 characters should get nerfed, especially Raiden in my opinion, but Johnny being a pure rush down and mix up character means he should be threatening up close and have several options for breaking through the opponent’s defenses.
I think his overhead animations should just be made slower. His overhead punch and standing kick is way too fast for an overhead that gives you a full combo

What exactly was the thought process for this character? He is safe in almost every string, has a lot of meterless launcher, a couple of pseudo 50/50 that lead into full combo. Paired with Cyrax the couple of unsafe strings become safe as well and it is almost impossible to stop him.

Literally do the game's tutorial, learn about upblocking, and actually, and I mean ACTUALLY check out Johnny's frames and attack properties (like the big scary +15, which is actually a high and has a giant gap before it comes out) before you make a clown out of yourself with statements like that.

Gotta be honest, i was having a lot of fun with the game at first, but everyone playing the same characters and kameos and doing the same long ass combos over and over is getting really boring real fast, especially with the massive damage some characters can do, it's just too much, we need a balance patch soon

@LappyAwoo I barely started playing online in mk11 in the last few seasons and we're missing a lot of the old features like playback, being able to save and favorite those to learn what you did wrong. Plus I think the top 6 players in the game are pretty oppressive. There needs to be a balance patch

They should have made Johnny more like in MK11 to where if you're gonna make most Johhny strings safe, then take away most of his 50/50s. That was Johnny's biggest weakness in Mk11. But he wasn't near as OP as people said he was in Mk11.

I really hope they don't nerf him and instead buff the weak characters rather than nerfing top tiers. The difference isn't even as big as people think.

I just want to see him more punishable on some of his launching strings not all specifically f34, and maybe a small start up nerf to his d1 to stop Johnnys from mashing out of every characters pressure that has a 12-14 frame mids after strings where his turn should be over. I don’t want him to get “sub-zeroed”
Every single one of his launchers (212, f34, f124, bf3EX) is launch punishable if thrown out without cover from kameo. Please learn what upblocking is. It's a new mechanic for MK1, but the game's tutorial explains it really nice.
F21 leads into a 50/50 where you’re gonna eat 30% at least if you up block and guess wrong. f124 is already death on block for johnny w out up block. Now that cyrax got a well needed nerf and flawless blocking now stops both meter build and chip it should be less oppressive.
Even so, up block was not, prior to the update, and is not enough to level the playing field on its own. Especially online at higher levels, where you have to make a hard reads in sets where the ping can be up to 150ms and players can actually stagger and mix up effectively

And no, you should never have "level playing field" with a rushdown character in melee, unless you play another rushdown character or some specific anti-rushdown. Gotta get rid of this mentality that it is somehow unfair that Johnny beats you up close, but it's totally fine and fair that you beat Johnny full screen.

johnny doesn’t get beat full screen. There are no hard counters to him. He has an 8 frame almost completely full screen special that also can armor thru projectiles if enhanced, a dash that allows him to get in free and easy if you don’t have the timing to dash cancel, a parry that beats just about any button, and safety on almost everything he does. Even if somehow none of those tools work just use one of the many kameos that ignore projectiles, let him get up close completely for free, or do both.
You can turn your brain off with him and cruise thru the ranks like butter. No footsies, no neutral, no brains. Meanwhile you have characters that don’t even have useable mids
This is a competitive multiplayer game. Fairness and having a level playing field should be second only to the “fun factor”. Johnny kinda takes a massive dump on both in his current state if you want to do anything other than play the mirror, which you can’t even switch to mid-set.
When people who play Johnny don’t even need to block most of the match and can chip half your health bar it should probably be addressed. I don’t think it’s impossible to beat him but he has no bad match ups. he’s a crutch character anyone can pick up in 10 minutes or less at any rank lower than grandmaster, and at the higher levels it just turns into a one player game where you watch Johnny slowly punch your health bar away one chip at a time.
This is the most fun NRS game I’ve played since MKX imo. My issue is with Johnnys kit and Johnny kit alone.
@frosty_trees I think we're playing two very different games then. Cause I have to work pretty hard for every win in ranked, with fundamentals, hard reading my opponent and properly timing my pressure. While said opponent on some braindead zoning garbage like Liu Kang, Sub-Zero or Rain just spams whole match without any thought or reason. And that's on top of Kenshi and his fun, but frustrating Sento stuff.
Maybe if you play somewhere above first 5 ranks you'll actually see how to get out of Cage's pressure. But you won't get there if you keep being condescending and unwilling to spend some time actually understanding the match-up. Like, for example, Shadow Kick is a high and launchable on block, Dash is not immune to everything all the time, etc.
As for "bad matchups" - that is a really bad requirement to have. It only shows that the character needs buffs. I don't think Injustice's Zod vs Luthor is an example of good balance.
If you suck playing against rushdown - maybe try playing one to understand the game plan better. Though it is quite a bit harder than brainlessly spaming projectiles.
Johnny still has weaknesses. Zoners, hard matchups against certain characters like Astrah and Reiko, and also since he moves like a normal human visually, it is VERY easy to tell what moves he is gonna do so people can easily block, even crouch or high block late. Not to mention his dmg is very weak unless he has Cameos/Hype and Hype is difficult to pull off and use for the average player. He is balanced. And this is coming from a scorpion/Johnny main. I want Scorpion buffed to Johnnys lvl, not nerfed
I just find it hilarious that the most normal character in the new mk timeline (both in gameplay, design and lore) is the most OP right now.

It’s funny because Johnny’s the 2nd to 1st character I ever picked up in this game and he’s my only main… definitely not a coincidence.
Johnny Cage is top tier in an nrs Mk game. Who could have seen that coming?
Is he the best character in the game? Maybe. Does he have some tough matchups? Absolutely. Ashrah, Tanya, Geras, Reiko, Kenshi all give him a hard time. There’s probably more matchups that I’m missing but once the opponent knows how to block his strings it’s tough for him to open anybody up.

honestly, you may be trash and predictable because with kameos. He may have one of the most even matchup spreads in the game imo. Zoning is soooo nerfed in this game with the addition of kameos and how fast you build and keep meter.

I definitely agree he’s the most op. I play raiden and I have some trouble with very skilled Barakas but most are brain dead. Liu Kang has some of the problems Johnny has but just not as many. Reptile is good but not op, smoke is extremely punishable, and Kenshi takes skill and precision. You can’t just mistakenly be good with kenshi like you can Johnny

ima be honest, idk too much about standard fighting games, but i feel like when it comes to balancing games, it's better to buff everyone else than to nerf a few characters. i don't mean to buff them to the point that they become better than the already good characters, but to buff them so that the tools they have are aproximately equal to the good characters

Im new to the game and I have 2 questions:
1. How can you tell when a move has armor by looking at the move list?
2. How do you perform a reverse counter? Is it with one of the "armored" moves? Or can it be any?
When looking at the move list hit Square which opens up other info about the moves. Especially useful for doing Brutalities so you know what Else you have to do to make them work. I believe Square is 1 on all controllers.
Look at the amplified version of all your special moves. If you press square read the info. It will say armored
You can also shadow dash cancel his fatal even in neutral

When I got milk I didn’t watch any videos on who the best and whatever and I just picked up Johnny and I guess he’s really good😭
I think Johnny needs a very mild nerf, he doesn’t have projectiles and his air combat is really bland without kameo assists. That doesn’t mean he’s basic or average because Johnny is one of those characters who feels capable fighting alone and a kameo would only give him a few more benefits. Cyrax is also a major contributor for being the best kameo assist but outside of that, making Johnny less + on block and reducing the amount of style points he gets for the hype meter sounds fair enough. The Hype meter is really fun and unique only to him but it often leaves you vulnerable if you’re not careful or if you decide to take a risk for being punishable. That said, I think Johnny should be allowed to be this crazy and maybe down the line if he’s too crazy we might consider toning him down again.
He has a lot of strings that lead to full combos without cameos while everyone else has one or two. He hardly ever needs bar which means he can break your combo after you made an opening after losing half your life to block damage. He has lows an overheads for days and almost all of them are safe. I main smoke. He has lows an overheads to but they are not safe. Also smoke has no mid starters. A mild nerf wouldn't cutbit mate.
I won't lie man cyrax helps Johnny a lot but I only see a few people talking about it but Johnny/lao is really dumb as well I personally think it's a bit better but that just my thoughts.
bro what, no projectiles is a con, but hardly an issue because if you gave him one. You'd hardly even use it as Johnny shouldn't even be that far from the opponent. Air combat being bland isn't even an issue so I don't know why you mentioned that. Now he's not unfair, as tbh there are like 3 more unfair characters. Raiden, Baraka, Kenshi (kinda). SO I do agree that he maybe shouldn't be nerfed hard, but other characters should get broken shit as well.
@@coleforpresident5762 I only mentioned the air combat strings because a good deal of the cast can go with or without them for damage and combos, Sub Zero and Smoke being good examples, but the rest of the cast can go without those strings. That being said, yeah I do agree that the top 3 characters should get nerfed, especially Raiden in my opinion, but Johnny being a pure rush down and mix up character means he should be threatening up close and have several options for breaking through the opponent’s defenses.

I think his overhead animations should just be made slower. His overhead punch and standing kick is way too fast for an overhead that gives you a full combo
