    When I moved to nyc I booked an airbnb for 3 weeks and then that family basically took me in and now I have that room in Manhattan for 430$ a month. Its the luckiest thing ever! Networking is important, ask friends in the city if they or anyone they know has an open room, its always easier to get in if you know someone (I knew literally 0 people so I just had to go for it lol)

    NYC is the greatest city in the world, by any measure. It has always had a cultural and an emotional hold on me. My first visit there was a dream come true. Took my Korean wife there a couple years ago. She loved it. Seoul is a fabulous mega-city, too, but there's just something (many things!) special about New York. Not looking to move, but would love to spend more time there.
    Your tips on moving are good advise for moving to any city.
    Thanks for a fun and informative video.
    Happy Trails!

    Yeah, 0.5 mile is our top distance from a subway station too. That's how far we lived from one when we were up in the Bronx. But now we're only 3 blocks away and we're spoiled!! Those were really great tips and good advice. Nice job!

    Yes I agree, finding a roommate, especially sight-unseen, is for sure a case of trusting your intuition. I have done this before, not in NY, but still.. and had really good success when I listened to my gut. It is definitely a good idea to at least talk on the phone, if not Facetime, when agreeing to live with someone you don't know, because it gives you a better sense of who they are and if your personalities will mesh.

    I'm about to just bite the bullet and do it. I have a drive, I know it won't be easy, but my heart belongs to New York. I've visited many times and I understand it, I am a pro at getting around NYC, I'm great at talking to locals. I've helped other tourists to get around because they don't understand the subway for example, and I don't even live there. I am ready and willing to hustle to get my spot in this city, I have to just do it.

    Hi Mari! Thank you for making this video. I'm getting ready to move out by early next year and watching someone who has already done it is comforting. How much money do you think a person might need to move from one state to another?

    • @mari.johnson
      @mari.johnson  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Here & Air Travels I would say $5,000 at the bare minimum if you're moving somewhere like NYC. For an apartment you'll usually need first and last months' rent as well as a security deposit. Also, allow enough that you can live on if you don't find a job right away. Hope that helps!

    • @mari.johnson
      @mari.johnson  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mr102185 Hi there! Yep, I love Chicago! My dad grew up there so we used to go visit every year. I haven't been for a few years now, but overall I'd just say Chicago feels a little smaller with more of a community feel than New York - if that makes sense. NYC is on a scale of cities unlike any other!

    Really good tips, and you held my attention the whole video, which is hard to do haha:) so I've been saving up for over a year working a full time job (living with my parents so I got a pretty big sum saved up haha) Was finding a job hard? I know it's really expensive so I'm sure you need to have an above average paying job. No "education" really, just a year as a bank teller. Do you have any suggestions job-wise? Thank you, I really appreciate it, have a great day!

    • @mari.johnson
      @mari.johnson  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ian Rollinson It's great that you have a lot of savings! That will be helpful with initial costs. As far as jobs go, depends what you're looking for. Overall though, I found that New Yorkers are willing to give chances to people without experience if they like you and think you have what it takes. So use any connections, be ready and willing to work, and be open to different things. Good luck!

    What advice would you give for finding a job in NYC?

    • @mari.johnson
      @mari.johnson  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Andy Olson Depends what kind of job you want, though in NYC it's so much is about connections, who you know, and what you have to offer people. There's a lot of competition, so you just have to be ahead of the game in some way or another!
