Hey, I'm South African and have been dreaming about NYC since I was like 8. I'd watch the ball drop every year, religiously, for years and last year after I graduated university- I finally flew to NYC. It was the best experience of my life. Congrats on moving to NYC!
The girl in the yellow shirt, her struggles were not like the girl in the orange shirt. Yellow shirt had family support, a couch to sleep on, a cousin to show her how to move around the city. SUPPORT will get you far, when you already have ambition.
Support will def get you far, but please don't allow one video to make you believe you know my story (the girl in yellow). I don't think sleeping on a couch for 3 months in an apt with 5 other people would be considered luxury, and no she did not "show me around". She was in school in Brooklyn raising a baby and I was here pursuing a dream in Manhattan. I honestly wish I was able to live in a hotel for a month like my friend was blessed to do, but I wasn't. I also didn't have a job lined up, I had a freelance role that was very fickle and ended shortly after I moved to NY. Support gets you far, and I am grateful to have had a couch to rest on, but my own hunger and ambition pushed me further in life, not a couch or family. I still live in NYC 7 years later, whereas my friend had to move back to LA after a year. We all have different levels of struggle, but please don't water down my struggles because it's easier to judge from a computer screen than to actually know what I went through. Thanks for watching. My point was if not for that couch where 5 other people stayed, your struggle would haves been waaaaaaaaay harder, off the pure fact you didn’t have the money for a hotel. Also, even thou your family member was in school and raising a baby, you still had her for a support system rather verbal advice or her opinion. Nevertheless, your ambition and hsuccess hunger is what got you in your on space. So again I was NEVER knocking your grind, I was just stating who I thought had a better support system.

To build connections here I would suggest joining groups on FB, attending network events in NY to get to know other ppl, and lastly seeing if your immediate circle has anyone that lives here that can assist.

Hi! I am planning to do a detailed video this week on all things apartments, jobs, and getting around NYC. Every neighborhood has their own grocery store since most are mom & pop local stores. Key Foods is a chain in most boroughs that have affordable food, but definitely check out your local bodegas.
To find a roommate situation and be good for 2-3 months I would say 5k. To live in your own spot I’ll say 5-7k. It’s possible to do it for less (like I did) but you gotta know ppl you can stay with as you build.
Seriously that was a smart move to look outside the city. Too many newcomers make the mistake of having to live in the city and end up paying way way way too much in rent.

The title is a lie. How it says she moved to New York with 5.00 but at the beginning she said she stayed at a hotel for a month lying self.
