    That was a very hard job, you needed all your strengh. OH boy, what a massive orchid. She had very nice good roots in spite of so many old back bulbs.
    I noticed you removed almost all the back bulbs which was a good option. I left some on my Cymbidium when I repotted them in the spring in order to avoid too many divisions on the same plant but I did wrong because they ended up rotting throught the summer and I had to do an emergency cleaning of the plants. No good for this year's blooming. All in the name of experience, lol.
    Your orchid looks so much better now, she will get stronger and fuller in no time.
    Thank you so much for the shout out, I really aprreciate it. Have a great weekend Rachel !!!

      It was the mother of all jobs but I'm glad it is done now. Only another four to go! But they are much smaller. I guess, we live and learn all the time with these jobs but it is hard to remember lessons when we only do tasks every couple of years. Have a great weekend!

    What a great video. A real person showing a real plant that is overgrown and showing the process and the difficulties. This video has just come to my attention as a gift from heaven, only it actually comes from you, dear Rachel! Thank you so much for everything you taught me in that video. I feel like it was Heaven sent. Before I found you showing me what I needed to learn, earlier today I was trying to repot a 6 year old cymbidium that I had bought for my bedridden mother to enjoy outside her bedroom window in full bloom for months before she died. It never bloomed again and today I decided to try to repot it. It looked just like yours and I was afraid to take off the old bulbs. I will redo it tomorrow and make sure to use cinnamon when needed. I am so encouraged and emotionally feel like doing it properly will honor the memory of my mother.

    with now over 100 cymbidium orchids in my collection I've learned a few things and I personally cannot criticise anything you have demonstrated here. A fabulous presentation. One time only, I hacked a cymbidium apart with a spade, one other time with an axe, so I understand just how hardened the root ball can become. These days if needed, like yourself, a disused kitchen knife.

      @@GardeningatDouentza I "usually" get my first flowers in April (Cym. Tracyanum) and the last ones are "just about" dead on the spike here in early January. I have obviously spent time hunting down the early bloomers and the late bloomers. Years ago I had everything out in September when my partner would be abroad. It was this that influenced the decision to acquire others that flowered at other times of the year. I repot in a coarse bark, charcoal, cym mix, coco husk, with a tad of perlite. The cyms tolerate the Southern Australian winter but it's our horribly hot summers where they suffer.

    Hello from Melbourne Australia. I prefer to have 1 or 2 attached leafless back bulbs (the healthy and firm ones) with each division if possible, as these old bulbs store nutrients that can help the plant to flower quicker. I grow many Cymbies here and they are the easiest orchid to grow.

    Since last time I commented on this video, I just got my first Cymbidium 2 days ago, it's a warm growing miniature Kusuda Fantasy.
    Found it cheap, imported from Taiwan by a local nursery.
    I watered it yesterday, to get the roots more elastic, and today I had this video on repeat as the soundtrack to my battle.
    Those roots were crazy!
    It was potted mainly in soil and a few pieces of bark on the bottom, and that smelled really, really nasty...I am guessing cow manure, which I am still digging out from under my fingernails.
    The stench made the operation much harder, but I managed.
    I couldn't follow your advice to not rinse the roots, for obvious reasons, so I drenched it several times in water, to get the smell out.
    All is looking great now, luckily.

I understand cymbidiums are different, but I feel it was useful to see how you did the repotting. Hi thanks for the great videos. I just came back from having my six badly overgrown cyms divided and repotted. The man who did my repotting used a clean sterilized knife to cut through the many back bulbs that were needed to be removed exposing much cut flesh which were then repotted in new pots with sterile potting mix.. Do you think a drench with a fungicide is in order. I did not have a opportunity to apply any cinnamon to the cut wounds.....Thank you

      Personally I would not bother with the fungicide. Cymbidiums are tough old cookies.

    Thank you for this video!! I couldn’t believe how hard it was to find a video about repotting an orchid with old psuedobulbs. Could you do a video explaining more in depth why you need to divide and such? I have a newly acquired cymbidium with a few dead bulbs and was thinking I can just remove those without dividing the plant? Is that a thing? Or must you always divide even if you put them back in the same pot like you did with the 3?

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't have to divide your cymbidium but what will often happen is that it divides of its own accord when you removed certain pseudobulbs. Hope this helps.

    Greetings from San Francisco! I am thrilled to find you as I have some mega monsters that have been in the pot for 20 years. Yes a bit embarrassed by this but I've had 2 shoulder replacements since the last time I split a few (orchids weren't the cause) and now I'm ready to try again. My monsters are all in very large clay pots (descendants of 50+ yr old plants) which are just about impossible to lift. Any suggestions of how to get them out without breaking the pot? and yes once out they will all go into plastic! Thanks much!!

    I had to repot a few of my Cymbidiums in spring. The last one (it was also the largest) I ran out of orchid bark so I just popped it into its new larger pot meaning to get back to it, I never did. It seems to be happy, it grew new pseudobulbs and is growing several spikes. If I ever work the courage to divide any of my Cymbidiums I now know how to. Thanks for sharing.

      Hi there. That's a shame but the good news is that cymbidiums can regrow roots although it may take some time. I don't have a video on it but if you google 'cymbidium back bulb propagation' you're going to find lots of information on what to do. Good luck.

    Hello!! I have learned a lot from your videos. Thank you. Could you tell me why some buds of my cymbidiums die before opening the little flowers. I opened a bud pocket because I saw it with some spots from the inside and when I opened it all the little flowers that were growing fell and inside there was something sticky and brown, also that in some areas of the floral stem when I removed the cover that they have. 😢😢 so I don't know if it's a bacteria or a plague. I hope you help me. Thank you 🎉❤

      Sorry to hear about your cymbidiums. It's very hard to diagnose this kind of thing. My best guess is a change in temperature at a critical stage in bud development has led to this situation.

    My cymbidium has badly root rot .what can I do ?

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello. I would suggest removing all rotted roots and repotting your cymbidium. I presume it has some good roots? If the pseudobulbs are not rotted it should come back. Be sure to remove any soft pseudobulbs. Usually cymbidiums are good at growing roots so hopefully, with careful watering, it will regrow the rest of them. You might try a collar of sphagnum moss around the base of the plant and keep it just moist.
      If your plant has no roots at all then it is more problematic. Good luck.
