I'm 73 now, but when I was a little kid, mom would bring in weeds from the country ditches and dip them and they would be used in bouquets for Christmas decorations on the table and they glistened. I've been trying lately to remember what it was they used, so I appreciate this post. I don't think they went into so much detail back then. I think it was just put the weed in the liquid with the borax in it and let them cool.
Wow, your mom was resourceful yet kept things festive and magical. My mom did things like that, though not that- she dyed Easter eggs using boiled red onions & beet juice, stained linens in tea and/or coffee and decorated our Christmas trees with hand strung popcorn and strings of cranberries then added yellow calico bows to every other branch. I go in the ditch or meadow for plants and flowers all the time. Whose to say we can't enjoy the weeds? God made them after all-
We do this with our kids before Thanksgiving. We gather cattails, pinecones, Rye, Barley, Wheat, small tree limbs with dry leaves still attached, etc. Then we spray them with gold and silver and copper paint! We put the pinecones inside a big clear vase and then make our own arrangement with the rest. My kids are now 20 and 25 and we all do this every year still.
Hello, I wanted to share a little secret I tried with the fabric flowers. Try not leaving them in the solution for a long time. I let mine steep in the solution for about 3 1/2 hours. When I took them out, I was still able to shape the middle of the rose so that you could see the middle. I still achieved all the crystals and glittery pedals. However, the pedals did not fall off, nor were they brittle. I thought I would pass this on.
I saw demos of doing this at Christmas this year. There are videos in You Tube showing how and how much they used. I don't think it was as much as she did. But to each his own for the look they want.
This is so beautiful. Thank you for the inspiration. As a little girl, on B&W TV, I watched commercials for 20 Mule Team Borax, presented by actor Ronald Reagan. 20 years later he became President of the United States.🇺🇸
I used to live near a borax mine. We would gather the powder that dropped from the trains and put it in buckets of water for science experiments or just because. So amazing! I love the rose idea. It’s beautiful. Can’t wait to see what else can be used.
Your memory of the railroad tracks brought back the memory of my great grandmother. My great grandmother Little Dove 🕊️ was a full blooded Eastern Band Cherokee Indian. My kin told me she would walk along the RR tracks, picking up coal that dropped off of the coal cars, in order to heat their home in a West Virginia holler. Grandma Little Dove 🕊️ had surgery for a tooth extraction. Obviously it was extremely painful and no pain killers. Her head was heavily wrapped in cotton fabric. Unfortunately due to this she could not hear the train coming down the track and she was struck and killed by the coal carrying train. Her youngest was six years old.
@@doberman1ismWhat a sad story. Your poor GG grandmother was just trying to contribute and live. I feel for all those who knew her then. They lost such a nice woman.
Every fall my community has a huge 2 week long festival, where you can buy & sell everything you can think of. And, homemade crafts are a huge deal, especially the more unique craft items. So, along with my crochet blankets and shawls that I make throughout the year, I believe I'm going to get the ingredients and start making a ton of these. I mean, silk flowers are rather inexpensive, and a large box of Borax is quite cheap as well. Now, your rose took approximately 7 hours to get to this state of crystalization, and it came out beautifully, although a tad bit thick. So, I'm thinking that maybe 5½ to 6 hours might be a more optimal time for a nice delicate coat of crystals. Thank you for this idea. I still remember my grandmother used to make crystal landscapes in small fish bowls using borax, food coloring. She used to form the landscape shape using heavy aluminum foil, then add the liquid mixture into the bowl until it just covered the foil. I loved to sit and watch these strange alien landscapes come alive and start growing. The only downside was strong copper smell from the reaction between the borax and the foil.
Maybe crumpled up brown paper bags or butchers paper over the tinfoil? Or spray glue to coat the foil before the Borax? Maybe saran wrap over the tinfoil? Lots of experiments in the future 🔮
I was thinking “I wonder what a sting of Ivy would look like???” Hmmmmm. AND the best part is you can use the cheapest and ugliest flowers from the dollar store and they will still look like a MILLION dollars!!! I have been making beautiful silk flower bouquets using clear glass vases with NICER Silk flowers as part of the arrangement and I place them in a VERY slightly tinted resin in a clear vase and arrange them while the Resin settles and even put a bit of moss on top. People think they are REAL. I used a few Peonies in one and EVERY person that comes over asks how I can afford Peonies this time of year LOL. ORCHIDS are the BEST and some little succulents in a shallow clear bowl that is supposed to be a vase, I did that with the plastic succulents in the resin as well as some drift wood and moss. GORGEOUS. Got the idea from a “shee shee” store and they were about $175 START for the SMALL ones!!!! Good luck doll and I am going to try THIS with Ivy!!!
You can also use it to get rid of ants. Mix in a pop bottle with a bit of sugar and lay it on it's side where they come in. They'll go for the sugar and die from the Borax.
@@lisamcfatter9234where do you live? Here in USA you can get a 65 oz. box of borax for $5.97. It’s gone up some in the last year or so but that’s still not cost prohibitive. 😊

I think if I used this technique on the bristle trees, some pine cones and some greenery, it’ll give me the look I want. Thank you for the inspiration !

This is so beautiful.... I'm checking my laundry room now!😂 Many years ago when my grandfather was dating my grandmother he gave her something very similar to this still have it on top of my dresser
I was wondering the same thing, since the salts start to calcify after a time of being exposed to oxygen and air moisture (they turn back into white, chalky mess).
Oh my goodness, this is lovely! Thanks so much, I think I might want to do something like this for table centrepieces for my younger brother’s backyard wedding reception 🧡
Came out beautiful. Just a thought but, if you make a tiny hole in the pizza box and insert the stem - like you did with the Styrofoam - you could hold onto the stem with the flower on one side of the cardboard and your hand holding the stem on the other side and twirl the flower to meet the glue without getting glue on your hand. Then, if you put a peg on the stem to stop the flower slipping, you could invert the whole shebang and have the flower hang into the borax container withoutneeding the styrofoam part at all. You could move the peg along the stem to get the height right too. 😊
Oh wow, that turned out gorgeous! Well done, well done. As to how to store it until it dries, that stem has wire in it, right? Unless you need every inch of the stem for something, you can just use a pair of jewelry pliers (or narrow/needle nose) to make a 180 degree bend, and hang it on a twine or your clothesline until it's completely dry. Again, that turned out beautifully!❣

Gorgeous!! Love that you had a colorful rose with clear crystals. So glad that it worked. Amazing to see all the petals. Thank you so much for sharing.
Very lovely! What a great way to earn extra money on the side. I would pay for someone to make them or have several made of different colors and sell individually. No matter they are beautiful! I must do this when I get moved. Thanks for sharing your ideas ❤😊
i could totally see this in a customized paint pour vase, shove some styrofoam in the vase to hold it up. Pick paint colors that go with the flowers colors to put on the vase. Ohhhhh, that would be such a pretty center piece. You would have 2 beautiful pieces to show off! That is gorgeous. I haven't been on your channel for awhile, so this is brand new to me! The reason it's so heavy is the fabric of the rose has absorbed a ton of water. Once it dries out should it be abt half that weight. Looks pretty😊. Fun project. I've seen similar stuff with Christmas decorations too.

I live in an senior assisted living home. I teach a craft class every week. I don't have enough glass containers. Can I use plastic. Or metal?? I live in Iowa in the USA. Thank you so much!!!! Jacque
Absolutely Beautiful! I have 2 questions( that others have asked as well): after fully harden “Do the crystals gradually fall off? AND: does putting a sealer on, prevent this, if it does? Please answer, as we all want to know. Thank you & look forward to your other videos!!
Very pretty.....take forever to just get it done. Drive me nuts. I've done this with fluffy pipe cleaners in the shape of snow flakes. They are beautiful Christmas decorations.

Oh my, just when l thought l was at the end of your wonderful ideas. Borax. Oh yes please, next stop Bunnings, it’s gorgeous, do you seal it with anything to stabilise the crystals. 🇦🇺❤️🙏🏽🙏🏽
Gorgeous. Did you cover this with resin?? I made a couple that grew off of pipe cleaners. Horrible, but sparkly, so I used in a huge geode. After a couple years it turned matte and bright white. 🤢 I laid it in the resin. I didn't cover it. Was scared it would ruin crystal sparkle. Any ideas?? Ms. Julie, the scientist!💜 This flower is SO STUNNING. CONGRATULATIONS.

Hey Julie! That is just gorgeous, the flower colors look stunning under the crystals. So fun, the possibilities are endless. How strong did the crystals adhere on the fabric after it dried completely? Just wondering if they'd break off rather easily and or still need to be handled kind of delicately. Can't wait to see more. Big ((Hugs)) from Texas!!🤗

you can spray it will clear lacquer to help minimize the loss of the crystals as it is being handled.
Brilliant idea 😄
@@lizdavies8030Spray it above the flower and not on it, directly dulls the sparkle and too much will dissolve the crystals! 💕

I made some tiny resin birds a while back. I'm going to shape some pipe cleaners into a nest shape and grow crystals on them so my little birds will have a magical sparkling nest to lay in. Thank you 💛
Wow....thats so beautiful!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Wow! That really came out so beautiful 😍
wow, you have giving me so many good craft ideas I will never run out, I'm off to bunnings!
You are awesome!I watched this video a few day's ago. I tried it yesterday and they turned out so beautiful! The problem is after I made a couple of them everyone wants one. I live in an senior assisted living home. I teach a craft class every week. I don't have enough glass containers. Can I use plastic. Or metal?? I live in Iowa in the USA. Thank you so much!!!! Jacque
JULIE this turned out beautiful
Stunning. Are the borax crystals stronger than the other crystals? I love the flower. ❤❤
Absolutely Beautiful! I have
2 questions( that others have asked as well): after fully harden “Do the crystals gradually fall off? AND: does putting a sealer on, prevent this, if it does? Please answer, as we all want to know. Thank you & look forward to your other videos!!
I was wondering the same thing…
Stunning Julie, looks like fabric is a great medium to use for crystals.
Very pretty.....take forever to just get it done. Drive me nuts. I've done this with fluffy pipe cleaners in the shape of snow flakes. They are beautiful Christmas decorations.
Amazing crystals! Absolutely stunning! Love this technique. Thank you for showing us how to make beautiful crystal flowers. I see a beautiful crystal bouquet in my future🥰
Thanks soooo much. Totally enjoyed this and will definitely try it🌸
❤Thank you again! You keep inspiring me! It's 4:20 am here. I've been up watching you amazing videos all night 😂
Oh my, just when l thought l was at the end of your wonderful ideas. Borax. Oh yes please, next stop Bunnings, it’s gorgeous, do you seal it with anything to stabilise the crystals. 🇦🇺❤️🙏🏽🙏🏽
Beautiful!! Very cool!! Thanks for sharing this.
I used to dry flowers in the 80s just like this❤
I didn't know you can do it in the microwave. Beautiful😍
Absolutely gorgeous!!
Who knew well you did and I’m glad you taught us because this looks like a lot of fun and that rose is gorgeous
Any ideas?? Ms. Julie, the scientist!💜
This flower is SO STUNNING. CONGRATULATIONS.
Absolutely Gorgeous! 🤩😍🤩 I love it. Thank you for sharing your craft with us. 🙏

Beautiful results! Thank you......
The flower is gorgeous! I had no idea you could make such beauty with Borax! Just found your channel and have subscribed to be sure and see more magic! 😍 Thanks for sharing!
