Most med students I know had pre-existing ideas about the kind of physician they wished to be upon entering school. And many had changed their path by the end of their third year. I thought pediatrics would be for me - yet it was my LEAST favorite rotation of third year. I started third year with an Internal Medicine rotation and everything clicked. This was for me and fit my personality and strengths. Later, I planned to either specialize in GI, ID, or Pulm/Critical care. As time passed, I realized what I found most fascinating and rewarding was Infectious Diseases. I've now been in practice for 13 years and love being an ID doc. Your passion will come to you regardless of the pros/cons that come with that speciality. Medicine is endlessly rewarding and intellectually challenging, and it is privilege to care for people. Good luck and work hard! Thanks for your videos!

Neurology is challenging. Patients with strokes and chronic neurological conditions are difficult to care for. Yet, if this is your passion and what you finding most fascinating, go for it. Spend time examining the speciality closely when you do your Neurology rotation. If it calls you and it's right for you, all will fall into place.

You should do a series where you highlight other options for those uninterested in going the M.D. or D.O. route and instead having professional doctorates for specialized clinical professionals.
    Audiology - Au.D.
    Optometry - O.D.
    Podiatry - D.P.M.
    Occupational Therapy - D.O.T.
    Nurse Practitioner - D.N.P.
    Pharmacy - Pharm.D.
    Psychology - Psy.D.
    Veterinary Medicine - D.V.M.
    Physical Therapy - D.P.T.
    Chiropractic Medicine - D.C.
These typically are cheaper alternatives to Med School and still make good money, while providing a doctorate in a specialized field.

The biggest change in my thoughts of a specialty actually started during my medical clerkship (the final year). Because that is when you actually see patient cases, how to interact with them and how the overall work environment will be like. Now I feel like I need to put a lot more thought before choosing a specialty bcz it's not just about your aspiration but what actually would SUIT you. Even as doctors, we all deserve to be happy while serving our patients and I think it's still ok for us to prioritize ourselves especially when we're down the drain. I do think working with a constant work schedule works the best for me. I thought I might choose pediatrics, but now I feel like I need to put a lot more thought into that one. But I might be exaggerating bcz seeing things from an intern point of view will always be worse than when you actually become a doctor. Anyways, I'm hoping for the best for myself. And I wish the best for others aspiring to become doctors.

I've already answered all of those questions for myself and at this point I consider 4 specialities seriously(I'm just finishing my 3rd year which is kind of the 'transition' year between pre-clinical and clinical years in Poland). I love internal medicine as it is such a broad field but sometimes it scares me that even other doctors treat internal medicine specialists as no specialists at all. I'm even more interested in oncology but the residency programme in my country for oncology is scary for me(first three years are spent completely in internal medicine, where doctors and not very keen on teaching as you'll not specializing in IM anyway. ). Pathology would be perfect but I'm not sure if I would be able to perform an autopsy(I feel like watching it and doing are two completely different things). And there's hematology... but there're very little residency spots for that speciality so it's hard(And if I tried and didn't get the spot I'd have to wait 6 months to apply again for any speciality). Good thing I have 4 more years to make that choice.

Can you expand on the lack of precision and poor patient outcomes in neurosurgery?
    I want be neurosurgeon.
I would think people going for neurosurgery before medical school continue with it because neurosurgery is communicated socially (or maybe glamorized) as being highly challenging with low work-life balance. So they set them self up for the challenge before hand and end up going through with it because they already went so far in preparation.

    • @korasluchowa
      @korasluchowa 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

I'm neurosurgeon from Poland and I feel offended. This will be my first comment in my life on youtube. Lack of precision? For example: When I'm operating lumbar disck hernation I'm trying to make the smallest skin incision possible and then I'm operating in microskope. I'm operating cervical disk hernation removing disk and posterior longitunal ligament trying not to even touch cervical cord because it is very sensitive. When I'm operating brain tumour I have to be gently with retractors, bicoagulation, sucction to not demage healthy tissue. I'm operating brain vessels malformations when every move can lead to death of the patient. I'm operating spine fractures when I need precision to put screws in spine without demaging nerve roots. We are making plastic surgery of the skull. Plastic sutures in every operation. Plastic skin incision. Almost every operation with microskope, microsurgery gears. I could write many more examples if I want... I think that the ordinary neurosurgeon should be the same or even more precised than plastic surgeon. Sometimes from outside our operation can look not precised - when we open the skull with craniotome or making long spine stabilisation but in most cases in most amount of time we have to be very precised!
Bad outcome can be true when we operating brain trauma, strokes, SAH from aneurysm. Our patients die of course more often than patients operated by plastic surgeons, but in most types of operations we have good outcome.

Rehab doesn't really seem like something I'd want to do but pediatric hematology combines what I really want to do which is pediatrics with something really cool, even though the field can be sad it will be really energizing when I actually help someone. I want to ask though (I don't know if you really read comments but..) do you have videos/resources for people who are around my age who already kind of know what they want to do and resources that can help them sort of spring ahead with a little extra practice? I don't know, I think it'd be cool if there was someplace I could really start learning about it without having to wait till med school bc I'm still just a freshman in high school.

I entered into med school hoping to be a medical researcher, I loved neurosciences. At the end of my years in school, when I got more clinical practices I realized I really enjoyed Ob/Gyn and Pediatrics... Now I am about to choose how to continue my carrer, choosing a postgraduate program or a specialty and it's driving me crazy. I still love research but in a basic or translational level (clinical research is not for me) but I don't feel like to giving up direct patient contact to stay in a lab. I need to choose a way and quit the other... I hope to get back to this comment in a while being happy wherever I'll go.

I'm still in high school and about to graduate next year. I can relate to you, I love researching medical stuff, especially in the field of neuroscience. I know it's a really difficult specialty, but hopefully, this is the role that was meant for me. In the meantime, I consider becoming a Nurse first as it gives me an advantage before I go to medical school. And yeah, @SandaraGonzales-uq8pf I hope you have a successful career and a wonderful life... I also hope to get back to this comment, wondering if I can make it through to my desired career. May the Good Lord Bless us all.

6:36 "Too many bureaucratic tasks..." I don't hear this talked about often, especially in "Day in the Life"s. I've always wondered about those things...
