i remember an old joke a friend from med school once told me, first year everybody wanted to do ortho or plastics, as soon as step 1 scores came back everyone now wants to do primary care.
reminder: It is totally ok to change your mind once or several times between the end of second year medical school and med school graduation. Sometimes you never know how you like something until you actually put a hand in and try it for yourself.
Nothing better than a smart guy who truly understands medical students and deliver what they want and need to know in ur videos, we are lucky for ur amazing videos
Dear Dr. Jubbal and MSI team, Thank you for making these videos and congrats on over 1 million subs! As a first-gen college student, the place I turned to time and time again for all pre-med related and trustworthy advice was here. I recently graduated from undergrad, took my MCAT this summer, and got a 522 all thanks to anki (jk...thanks to your study habits videos...but also ANKI). I planning on taking 2 gap years, but I'm now one step closer to being a doctor! Writing these words makes me so emotional I could cry. Thanks from all of us :)
As a 30 yo second year I can definitely attest to overlooking the timeline of training - came in thinking surgery until I realized I'd be closer to 40 when I'm done. Leaning more towards "lifestyle friendly" now a days.
I am right there with you. Originally thought Interventional Radiology, but for similar reasons, plus the long working hours, I am leaning toward lifestyle friendly specialties as well.
The abbreviated version is med school, surgery residency (5 yrs) likely research fellowship (1-3 yrs), some people do intensive care fellowship (1 yr), lots of publications, then peds surg 2 yrs. The youngest ped surg fellow I met started as a PGY 8. There are about 50 spots in the nation. It’s not an easy road, but good luck.
I attended an medical based highschool and during that time I fell in love with psychology. It was my plan to continue studying psychology in university but due to my family's disapproval I ended up going to med. I'm currently an psychiatry resident, it was an tough journey but enjoyable nonetheless.
Thanks for sharing this, beyond being informative, it's a valuable video to share with kids seeking to enter into the field from someone who has personally experienced it
My opinion after choosing what I believe was the best specialty for me and now totally loving it: rather than focusing on an abstraction of what each specialty might mean, if you’re a medical student, just look around you. Are the people around you that are doing your target specialty, achieving the happiness that you want? If yes, pursue. If no, then choose something else. Each person’s happiness is different, so choose what you want and try not to get caught up into “what everybody else wants”, which I think is one of the most common traps of med school and career decision making.
I ran a tutoring program for grade school children while in college. I taught 6th grade before I started Med school. I worked as a counselor at a children’s psychiatric hospital. I was sure that I would be a pediatrician or child psychiatrist when I started Med school. But my 3rd year clinical rotations convinced me otherwise. This is a major advantage of medical school-you get to try on the specialty before you have to choose.
I was set on dermatology for awhile but now I'm thinking psychiatry. Not too competitive to get into, short residency, and sounds like a cush lifestyle for the most part
I'm at my 1-st year at med university and I'm still thinking whether i want to become a doctor or someone else lol. Why this damn life is so complicated, man
I'm premed but I'm torn between Neurosurgery and Anesthesiology. I love the aspect of of surgery and working with the nervous system, the pay is also great. Although I don't know if I could handle the work/life balance. Anesthesiology was what got me interested in medicine in the first place because it is still connected to surgery, has a greater variety in its work, still pays well, and has a much better work life balance. But I guess only time will tell.
As an Anesthesiologist, who went to medical school and knew anesthesiology was the area I was interested in, I am very satisfied. I was never interested in the pay. I always put care first. The only way to be happy in medicine is to love taking care of people. As a black anesthesiologist, there are some extra issues, but I love and care for all my patients. Loving the work is all that matters, the pay will come.
As an anesthesiologist, I can tell you that there are jobs where anesthesiologists work much longer hours than neurosurgeons. Also, there are neurosurgeons who work less than internists. You have time to decide and medicine may change by the time you are done with training.
@@haroldpierre1726 hey I'd like to know what other physicians think of maxillofacial surgery? I'm currently doing dental medicine and I'm keen on carrying on with surgery rather than other dental fields like prosthodontics or orthodontics..cool or mehh?
@@marymary9909 I've worked with a lot of maxillofacial surgeons. I find their work very interesting and I know my colleagues feel the same. What I try to remind aspiring physicians and dentists to do is learn how the compensations are generated. When you look at the average pay for certain specialties, it's not just a number. There are things you have to do to generate that number. These may include very long procedures with great reimbursement, quick procedures with low pay and vice versa. Or, the pay may be the result of clinical evaluations and managements. Once you examine the revenue process you might find that you love the clinical side but hate the business side of the specialty. You have to think of money because your staff, supplies, equipment, malpractice, office, etc. aren't free. Someone has to pay for it and inevitably it is YOU. Match the specialty you love with a business you love or you won't be happy.
I really love these videos! But I’m kinda sad I never hear anything about psychiatry. Sometimes it feels like the broad category videos only focus on three or four of the flashiest routes in medicine. However, I totally understand, his videos would be hours and hours long if he represented every specialty, I guess I just want to know more about my desired future career path!
I have such a long journey ahead of me. It’s sort of intimidating, but I’m excited. I already have my BA in Pysch, work in the DD/ID field for eight years. I’m planning to start PreMed soon. It’s going to be a long time to where I can achieve such title as MD, God willing, but that’s fine. Sometimes I regret not starting PreMed in the first place 🙄 I feel like I wasted time but I believe I can manage. I’m still under 30. No kids.
I have noticed that there is not a lot of content on fellowships! Like what type of fellowships are available, what to do to get one and which are the most competitive! That would be an amazing video! Anyways thank you for always making amazing and informative content! 😊
Lots of people have families in med school (because mothers are still protected by title 9) and many have families in residencies (there are some that provide maternity leave). A residency is training, but also a paid position. Probably the only paid position a person who never made over 25k a year can enter and make 60k their first year. Fellowships are also paid. I started undergrad at 30 and I’ll start medical school at 33 (yes, 3 years undergrad only). I at least have the life experience enough to know what I like, what motivates me, and how to balance my life and a career in many ways already. I’d say pushing the establishment towards a healthier medical field for practitioners is more important than steering future practitioners to what already exists.

But still I'm ready to do anything to get my dream job... My ambition always changes year by year but when I was in 6th grade I thought of being a doctor, I did not think about it seriously. While I agree with Dr. Jubbal that many people change their mind about specialties in Med school, there are some specialties that will very likely not be a good fit based on my being a non-trad (early 30’s) as well as current and prior shadowing and healthcare experience. The first doctor I shadowed was in the ER which wasn’t for me because of the pace and no continuity of care. In contrast my current job as a scribe in a urology practice and former one as a receptionist at a psych clinic showed me how much I enjoy getting to know patients. Going back to the point about my being in my early 30’s, it’s unlikely I would pursue a surgical specialty. Age aside, informational interviews with ENTS made me realize surgery isn’t for me.
It's great if you're able to rule out a specialty, but it's not feasible to rule out all specialties prior to getting to medical school. AAMC data shows >50% of medical students change their mind about specialty by the time they graduate
@@MedSchoolInsiders agree, as I’m sure there are specialties I haven’t considered because I don’t have firsthand experience as a patient or clinical experiences (work and shadowing).
Dr. Jubbal, What are your thoughts of RN's crossing over and going to med school? Have you heard of/experienced much success? Do you think that an experienced RN would have any advantage over colleagues or even in admission to med school?
May I ask if there are some cases in which a resident can freely choose his/her schedule in surgical residency? I'm just asking because based on what you said it has a minimum of 80hrs/wk...
I think you'd just have to choose a program with a schedule that aligns with what you want. I think my friend who is doing a surgical residency had to do like 36 hour shifts when I came to visit him so I pretty much didn't SEE HIM FOR 2 days straight even though I slept in his house.
Anesthesiologist is the leader of the operating room. There is no need to compete, but as an anesthesiologist you dont have to tolerate the surgeons bad mood, on the contrary if the surgeon is misbehaving is part of our job to order the surgeon or any other person of the staff to cool down.
Fam - great videos. can you do one on how to choose a doctor / specialist for lay people? is there any inside intel you can share on how to assess a doctor from a potential patient's perspective and th constraints to think through (insurance, etc.)
Can you please make a video regarding students who aren't native Americans but want to study in top American med schools. Just like I aspire to be a student of Harvard Medical school but I'm not from America.
Basically, forget being a surgeon if you have low scores or attempts. This is a very harsh system in residency application. I wanted to be a surgeon but because of low scores I gave up and will have to choose something I don't like.
Are you guys going to address the changing landscape of medicine, especially post-COVID, with regards to mid-level encroachment? It's not a specialty-specific problem, it's rapidly evolving and not going away anytime soon and almost no one going into medicine is aware of this issue, and your platform would be the perfect opportunity to raise awareness. I'm fully aware of the fact that nurses have more power online due to sheer number so I get not wanting to go within a 100-mile radius of this topic but it's just so, so central to modern medicine and it can NOT be overlooked. Please. I know I would've wanted to know this if I was finishing my undergrad and weighing my options. Thanks.
thank you for your videos it really helps and keeps me motivated at time when im down ☺️ do you think you could do a so you want to be... forensic pathologist (i know its a bit unconventional but id really love to see that!!) have a good day/afternoon/morning aha whatever it is :)
Do you guys plan on doing a video on OB/GYN? I personally will love it. Also thanks for all your fantastic videos! I just accepted a position for the class of 2025!
I hope you see this because I really need some help. I didn’t go to college right out of school hell I never saw myself going to college till now. I had no clue what I wanted to do with my life til recently when I had to stay with my mom at the hospital and was just kind of looking at everybody really admiring the work environment and I liked the care that was given to their patients. It kind of made me think about being a doctor and the kind of doctor I wanted to be. Then I realized how much I’ve struggled with my skin and how much I would like to help others with their skin.....lol I’m going on and on rambling but I was wondering do I still have any hope? I get really excited and pumped when I think about and it’s one of the things that I really wanna do and it’s realistic.
I thought emergency medicine residency was typically 3 years? I know there are some programs that are 4 but has the general standard of being 3 years changed?
How to give best effort on my dream?I always cherish strong dream, but can't work hard.I often get angry on myself as can't work hard.what can I do?seeking for a strong suggestion, Dr.Jubbal.
The length of time doesn't bother me. I'm only a pre-med freshman but I'm also 30. I already waited over 10 years just to be able to start, the next 10 years will pass just the same, so why not become something great in the process.
let me throw in a different perspective here - do not anticipate any "timeline" for yourself. this causes stress 1. if you don't happen to achieve what you don't "want" to achieve by a certain age and 2. if that does happen, you are more likely to choose a partner who is just "convenient" not a true life partner. *food for thought.* i have a saying i use a bit too gratuitously; "there is always more time ... until there isn't. and 'there isn't' always comes too quickly." i think that speaks volumes. i am an "older student" who is looking to go into medical school within the next few years after having taken the pre-reqs for med school (i could, by previous trials / practice tests, do very well on the mcat, but that doesn't give me the degree i JUST missed by becoming deathly ill at a very young age.). this is how i look at it - if it takes me 2 years to complete those pre-reqs while simultaneously shadowing and engaging in research (maybe 3) and then 4 in med school (so now we're at 6-7 years) and then complete a residency + fellowship program that is somewhere in the ballpark of 5 years (now we're at 11-12 years), i will be in my mid-40s. BUT .... does that REALLY matter? That gives you the rest of your 40s to pay off school loans / debts and then gives you a GOOD decade or two to practice. i am not there yet, but there are many of us who have faced different circumstances that have "held us back" from seeking out what we want to do. but in my mind? as long as you do what you want and feel you NEED to do and you are always open to learning more and you have a plan to pay off the debt, why does it matter? i have spent 10 years too ill to function. so to / for me, having even 10-20 years to practice would be an AMAZING GIFT. i really believe we have to stop this fixation on "timelines." everyone is different, ill or healthy. this is particularly relevant when it comes to getting married and having kids ... i can honestly say that out of my friends that have been healthy and have been able to finish their schooling, get married, and have kids, maybe 2-25 are LEGITIMATELY happy. why? if i had to hypothisise it would be that so many people are just so focused on getting married and having kids - especially as your pool or friends goes off and does just that. but when you feel down about yourself and your life, look very closely at those friends - how many husbands GAVE UP EVERYTHING only to get married and / or have kids? HOW MANY WOMEN just picked the most vulnerable sucker to marry them so they could have financial and other backing for their own dreams (that sounds misogynistic but i am trying to balance out the two sides!)? how many people just aren't the "right fit" just because they were focused on the TIMELINE rather than its CONTENT. people are putting very subjective thoughts (often conditioned) into "objective" terms which really cannot be quantified. if you are one of the few people who happened to get the "right profession," the "right partner," &c. by the age of 25? congrats. but we know that the human brain doesn't really fully develop until the age of 27 or so (as of now!); we shouldn't be making decisions both about lifelong careers that require a LOT of effort (not only mentally and temporally but also financially!) should NOT, by my view, be smashed together with who you want your partner to be and how many kids you want, etc., at LEAST until you have decided which is more important to you and you chase that more important thing down first. you cannot be a "terrific father / mother" if you're spending many years studying to be a highly specialized doctor. i just hope that makes some people think and realize that having a "timeline" for EVERYTHING in one's life is ... usually not the best "approach." as i mentioned previously, some people do get lucky. but i guarantee a lot more just put up with it because that is the place in which they have found themselves.
I finally got into med school recently
Congreats man
Ayy congrats !! And Good luck

Hello. Thanks for this. I'm a nursing student and would like to go into medicine later after I decide which field interests me the most
Waiting for a medical vs dental school video🥰
Thanks for this video!
I love medicine ❤️❤️
I might chose either Radiology or Anesthesiology. Both are interesting, earn about $400,000/year, and hardly have to talk to people
I'm torn between Family Medicine, CT Surgery, and Anesthesiology. I still have years to decide, though.
I’ve heard of surgical specialties now having 2 weeks on 2 weeks off similar to hospitalists. Is this true and how common is this practice?
I’ve heard of 1 week on 1 week off on trauma surgery but that could be an interesting take as well
I would like you see a video about "So you want to be a familiar medicine doctor ". Grettings From El Salvador
Please do a 'so you want to be a physician (Internal medicine specialist)'
can you do "so you want to be a family medicine physician?"
Thank you so much this will be going into my decision to be a physicist
Dr. Jubbal,
What are your thoughts of RN's crossing over and going to med school? Have you heard of/experienced much success? Do you think that an experienced RN would have any advantage over colleagues or even in admission to med school?
Now I m a general surgery resident. At the beginning, i wanna be a pediatrician. Whats your story?
Keep up the good work!
Please make a video about the field of Infectious Diseases!
Could you please make a video about MD-PhD's?
Would love an episode on Clinical Scientist after MD
When is the podcast coming 🤔🤔?
Please do a video about pulm/critical care!!!
Currently highschool, and half way through the video the idea of not having a family or a balanced life till 35 or even after puts me off
Can you please do “So you want to be a neonatal surgeon”
I've seen a few of those comments. I have a question. Why do you want to be a neonatal surgeon? (No hate btw, just wondering)
Can you please make a video regarding students who aren't native Americans but want to study in top American med schools. Just like I aspire to be a student of Harvard Medical school but I'm not from America.
What do you say are the requirements for a psychiatrist
What do you mean by “requirements”? You need a bachelor’s degree and then an MD or DO degree. Same with any medical specialty
Can you do a video on oral maxillofacial surgery?
can you do "so you want to be an oncologist" I and probably others are very interested in the field
Hey dr. Jubbal, med school insiders costumer and MS1 here. Can you do video on so you want to be oncologist/hemotoligst?
Basically, forget being a surgeon if you have low scores or attempts. This is a very harsh system in residency application. I wanted to be a surgeon but because of low scores I gave up and will have to choose something I don't like.
Do a So You Want to Be an Interventional Radiologist!
This!!
Thanks.
YES PLEASE.
One day could you do "so you want to be otolaryngologist" please
thank you for your videos it really helps and keeps me motivated at time when im down ☺️
do you think you could do a so you want to be... forensic pathologist (i know its a bit unconventional but id really love to see that!!)
have a good day/afternoon/morning aha whatever it is :)
Do you guys plan on doing a video on OB/GYN? I personally will love it. Also thanks for all your fantastic videos! I just accepted a position for the class of 2025!
Wish someone had advised me on this earlier in my medical career, but I'm satisfied with my choice now. Regretting wasted years though
You should make a video comparing life as a doctor in england vs amarica, also medical school
Can’t wait for “so you want to be a obgyn
Could you do a so you can to be a pediatrician, trauma anesthesiologist, or pediatric anesthesiologist
Don't residents get paid? And generally well? Like $60.000 dollars per year?
You can do it. If being a doctor is too much then you can be a Physician Assistant.
I thought emergency medicine residency was typically 3 years? I know there are some programs that are 4 but has the general standard of being 3 years changed?
If you haven’t made this video already , could you make a so you wanna be a nurse practitioner
How to give best effort on my dream?I always cherish strong dream, but can't work hard.I often get angry on myself as can't work hard.what can I do?seeking for a strong suggestion, Dr.Jubbal.
Please have a video about physical medicine and rehab
Will you be discussing midlevel encroachment in certain specialties and how that may affect the job market?
The length of time doesn't bother me. I'm only a pre-med freshman but I'm also 30. I already waited over 10 years just to be able to start, the next 10 years will pass just the same, so why not become something great in the process.
let me throw in a different perspective here - do not anticipate any "timeline" for yourself. this causes stress 1. if you don't happen to achieve what you don't "want" to achieve by a certain age and 2. if that does happen, you are more likely to choose a partner who is just "convenient" not a true life partner. *food for thought.*
i have a saying i use a bit too gratuitously; "there is always more time ... until there isn't. and 'there isn't' always comes too quickly." i think that speaks volumes.
i am an "older student" who is looking to go into medical school within the next few years after having taken the pre-reqs for med school (i could, by previous trials / practice tests, do very well on the mcat, but that doesn't give me the degree i JUST missed by becoming deathly ill at a very young age.). this is how i look at it - if it takes me 2 years to complete those pre-reqs while simultaneously shadowing and engaging in research (maybe 3) and then 4 in med school (so now we're at 6-7 years) and then complete a residency + fellowship program that is somewhere in the ballpark of 5 years (now we're at 11-12 years), i will be in my mid-40s. BUT .... does that REALLY matter?
