Hey friends! I have launched a Kickstarter campaign for my new full-length solo album! Please check it out here: www.kickstarter.com/projects/maxcarlisle/max-carlisle-titanium-reign
I bought my father-in-law one of these for a retirement present. Swapped the pickups out with some Toneriders, and fitted push/push pots to each volume control. He wanted something 'versatile' and it now has something crazy like 27 different pickup combinations. Picked it up second hand for about £200. Great value! I have half a dozen or so other Vintage models (strats, teles, and les pauls) and they're all pretty damn good for the price when you find them used!
If I got my hands on this model myself or some other model with three pickups and three individual Valium pods, I would do push-pull switching that activated phase cancellation, putting it in a similar league with the guitars of Brian May. That’s been a fantasy of mine for a long time. I thought of having a semi hollow model built for me with P90s and such switching.
My 2000 Gibson/Epi Black Beauty 3 was my first "real" (pro level/pricey) guitar. While I tend to favor a Tele body style more, and am not really a "Gibson" or "LP" guy, I still absolutely love it. An idea I have been contrmplating for awhile is to drill 100-150 _very_ tiny holes of varying small sizes (nothing larger than a pencil tip) into the body and insert fiber optic cable into them, then LED light the fiber optic cables from the back so that the face of the guitar looks like a starry night sky, or maybe a rough approximation of the Milky Way. It'd be a lot of work, but think the results would be worth it. A less work intensive way of achieving something similar might be to do the tiny drilled holes, but very shallow instead, and inlay some micro cut Luminlay dots/points. Anyway, the guitar is one of my faves, but definitely has the irritating Gibson tuning stability problems. If I ever do the "starry dots" idea above, I'll likely swap out all of the hardware as well for something more reliable from Schaller, Sperzel, etc. Haha. Anyway, great review, and nice sounding guitar!
Have you built guitars before, @@HorsesArePeople2? If so, how many? If I had the capacity to build my own instruments, I would build a semi-hollow one with either 3 buckers like the ones featured here or soapbar P90s. I would have the volume pots fitted with push-pull switches that would activate phase cancellation. I just put that in another comment responding to what somebody else had written.
What wasn't mentioned is the heel access is improved slightly because the way the body slopes away from the heel join on the back - go to 2:18 in the video. 🖖
Hello guys, I've been playing the guitar for 40 years, I've tried many, many, many guitars, swapped them, designed them myself and so on, but since I got my vintage guitar, my Gibson Les Paul, my Fender Stratocaster 83 and my EVH Wolfgang special are in the Regal, I've never had a better guitar in my hand, the sound is incredible, very playable, long sustain, excellent workmanship, I just can't get away from this guitar and the next one has already been ordered, for me the best guitar of all Times and damn cheap too 👍👍💪💪
I bought this exact guitar. It is now my most favorite electric guitar of all time. And I have owned many, and still own mini models and love them all. But this guitar would be great even at a more expensive price tag. Maybe it’s just the one I got, but I can’t express my gratitude toward the vintage company for this awesome instrument! I cranked the action down. I crank the action down way low and it definitely has all of that classic Les Paul swat that you would ever want! Love it love it love it! And it was only about $500…. Crazy
With the way the pickups are set up and being able to blend the individual pickups, It’s a poor man’s version of Peter Frampton’s iconic Phenix Les Paul seen of the Frampton Comes Alive album. Frampton’s Phenix Les Paul is my “ holy grail guitar,” and while it’s going to take some time to save up to afford the Phenix, I’m definitely interested in the reviewed Vintage guitar. Max, thank you so much for the content you provide, it’s exceptionally helpful, plus you’re rocking the Danzig vibe which is awesome. Thanks again!
Actually, this is more flexible than the Phenix. I own the Epiphone version and the middle pickup has dedicated volume and tone. The bridge and neck pickups share vol and tone. I was just thinking about rewiring it exactly as this guitar is last night, lol.
Another beautiful guitar from Vintage Guitars. This one offers so many different sound possibilities. And the looks are fantastic! I'd really love to have one, like I always comment about Vintage Guitars, if only there were a dealer closer to me than 200 miles. Very impressive guitar. (The triple pickup single cut is definitely my preference of all offerings in their single cut line.) Another great demo, review, and video, Max. Please keep them coming.
I had the same guitar in “custom.” They called it a Nashville and I will regret selling it (when my wife died and I thought I’d be destitute) for the rest of my life. It was “beautiful.” Now, I’m starting over and trying to educate myself as to what’s best instead of beautiful and functional. The noiseless P90s sound awful good and I still love the LP but not married to it. I’m hearing middle pickup and thinking, “You FOOL!”
Yeah I like that. I'm a drummer who plays bass and guitar from time to time, and I love the single cut style. I like the triple setup with the three volumes, slap a Floyd Rose FRX on it and take it to a whole nother level.
Hellyeah! The shop by my house has been carrying these Vintage guitars for years and I love them. Bang for the buck they are the best honestly. They also have the sg style bodies and I wish they made double necks that would havemw set!
Sounds pretty darn good. I was recently given a freebee GTX100 4×10" combo that's got a rotten cabinet (waterlogged MDF crumbles into dust). This video just made me decide to build a new cab for it.
I have the Bonamassa Epiphone '58 Black beauty custom that I really enjoy -but I think I like how this one was wired better - I think it allows for a lot more options tonally with that center switch wiring setup.
Wow Max, she's a beauty. I am deffinitly tempted. I sure that the middle pickup would get in the way for me but it might be worth giving it a try. In looking they are a little tuff to find., they dont seem to sell them right from the sight. Great video as always thanks Max
So my employer joined a program where you can pay for stuff automatically for a small chunk out of your check and Vintage Guitars are on their website. With their promo 20% I could get one from $18-$35 a check.
I’ve got a single cut away that I purchased in 1980 or 81. Looks just like the one that you played on today’s episode. Mine is white with 3 gold pick ups, though the gold is pretty worn now. The brand is El Degas, I think it cost approximately $450 with a hard shell case. It still looks good & hasn’t been played or even out of the case in at least 25 years. But I always hung on to the first one I ever had .
I weighed my V100 the other day and it weighed in at around 4.6KG. Not a light guitar but they are solid, really well built, sound and play really nicely.....I'm currently on my fourth Vintage brand guitar. The Vintage PGM. Peter green Gary Moore edition. 2 X V100 and a V400N acoustic.
Another great review and for a black guitar its really quite good looking. I just redid one of my built guitars with 3 humbuckers with chrome tops and 4 wires replacing the original 2 wire zebra humbuckers and put in coil splits. I like the idea of the 3 volume controls and getting all pickups in the middle position. I may try this and add some additional tones. Great playing as always, and I like the clean sounds the best as gain/distortion can cover up just OK pickups. Clean shows the quality of the pickup sounds but you can also see if with high gain if they break up or overdrive the amp.
This guitar speaks to me but I’m having trouble making my mind up. White or Black. I’m not sure. On one hand you got that awesome black one you played or a white Les Paul. Tough decision and I only want one. Hmmmmm. I have a Firefly triple humbucker Les Paul but I’m switching it to a triple P90 guitar so either the white or the black vintage will take its place as the triple humbucking ax in the collection 😎
I have a three-pickup Epi Black Beauty and the middle pickup is set fairly low for clearance, as you generally pick in that area. I added a Phat Cat P90 to mine to make the middle pickup a bit more versatile..
I just bought your Wolf guitar. Found it at the local music store! I said that's the Guitar Max guitar! Love it. This one's too complicated for me. lol
First of all I love it although I am not a Gibson Les Paul guy, I love Peter Frampton to death I just made it and have it wired like his. Thing is I just bought PRS SC 24 swamp Ash sandblasted in white because I just had to have it now I'm in stratosphere looking for the 24o8 hardware to take it from this push-pull to the two toggle switches because they isolate the single call pick up instead of having it just go to ground with the push pull
Vintage produce a quality product that is very price competitive and excellent quality control, not a three pu fan but that guitar does have some quality tonal variation.
Most definitely. You can sculpt a lot of interesting sounds with a three pick up guitar. It's a shame that the Les Paul Black Beauty models weigh a ton. SG Customs are a bit lighter, though, and I have two of those.
I'm actually getting an sg kit with three humbuckers the tone and volumes are the same as this guitar but it gonna have bigsby vibrato on it. I hope mine sounds as good as this one
I need a LP switch that actually is a 3 pickup selector like I think its called a triple pole triple throw. Unlike a regular LP switch which is a 2 pole triplethrow.
A Peter Frampton model! Three humbucker guitars are not widely made across the market and it has always made me ask why not? When you look at pickup configurations that are popular you see dual singles in different voicing ranges like T-style, lipstick, and P-90s, triple singles like made famous by the Strat, then super strat and super T styles that use HH, HSS, HSH and I have seen some slim line, semi-hollow, and full-hollow styles that use HS combos, yet there are so few that use HHH configurations and I don't understand why. As you demonstrated here the middle humbucker by itself has a tonal quality that is sparkly and gritty at the same time without ha ing to blend a neck and bridge together. Even then the physical positioning of the pickup in the body of the instrument adds a different tonality that blending the bridge and neck pickups together cannot capture due to the difference on how the vibrations of the string and resonance of the body varies in those locations. I also think that a middle positioned pickup tends to pick up more of the players pick attack as well due to the natural placement of the picking hand which lends to a different quality of note articulation. Which might lend to the favorability of pickup positions 2, 3, and 4 on a strat styled guitar as the inclusion of the center pickup adds a character and voicing that the spacing of dual pickup guitars simply cannot capture. This video has peaked my interest in experimenting with a triple humbucker setup and beyond the layout and configuration as demonstrated. Thank you for sharing this with us now I am off to start a parts list for one crazy build.
Guitar MAX, I wish these guitars had more info. Tuner gear ratios, pickup ohms and output. Fret wire material and such. More in-depth info would be great in these videos.
The guitar looks cool. There's something about how it sounds that is off putting. Since I started producing music, I hear guitars very differently. I don't care what a guitar looks like when I am listening. This guitar looks stunning. I don't care. I am just listening. I wanted it to really chime. Some guitars have a sparkle, a really expansive spectrum of sound and others seem limited in this regard and I don't know the reasons but I suspect it is not just about pickups or fancy capacitors.
As I understand it Vintage are in the process of migrating to Alan Entwistle pick ups, that'll solve it. (Most, but not all) Entwistles have a chime & sparkle I've not heard beaten at any price point, particularly the HV58s
I’ve owned two vintage brand singlecut style guitars. Great mod platform IMO, great finish, decent pickups. Electronics are cheap and they use cheap mini pots. Hardware isn’t terrible, but I’d recommend swapping it out. Pickups are decent but again, I’d swap them out. The guitars build shines with the woods used and long neck tenon. It’s a great budget alternative for an LP style guitar.
@@GuitarMAXMusic right now I have a pair of EMG revelation pickups I got from the EMG factory for 100 bucks. I swapped out the capacitors for vitamin Q paper in oil caps. I actually kept most of the hardware outside of the tuners, got locking tuners also from Wilkinson. It’s my number 1 gigging workhorse.
I "used" to own a 1957 Gibson LP Custom with three PAF humbuckers. I sold it back in around 1981, before vintage guitar prices exploded. Maybe this Vintage brand LP Custom clone would scratch the Custom Black Beauty itch? I currently own a very nice Gibson LP, but it would be cool to have something like this one. And I mostly play Strats so I'm not looking to spend a lot.
The Vintage brand is familiar to me. I definitely remember having heard or read about it when I was a guitar student in the latter half of the 90s. I will definitely put this on my list of possibilities if it were affordable, I were in the market and I wanted another single-cut solid body model. Does anyone know if they built a semi-hollow rendition of this guitar loaded with the same pickups?
Some of the vintage guitars brand I have seen on reverb seem really nice and of good quality, I wish they offered this awesome triple pick up black beauty les paul in a left-handed version
This is as far as I know the only 3PU Singlecut LP Custom-Style guitar available today besides the Gibsons that cost 6-7 k. It's great. However the one thing I do not like is that the fretboard has the inlays of a LP Standard. LP Customs have block inlays, especially one at the first fret. IMO this contributes a lot to an authentic look of a Black Beauty.
Look man i need to know I have a pearly gates humbucker bridge i like the tone and it squeals like a pig but I was thinking about getting an alegree 54k ohms for the added drive so should i get the pearly gates neck Seymoure Duncan and a 5 way switch with push-pull tone and volume knobs with a tone shaper kit ... or am i getting too nit-picky although i think it would give me a serious range of sound???? You seem like you got some sense so you are the first Guitarist I have asked... Thank you!! I like that sound what are those pick-ups ... Hey I got a torn rotator cuff they pulled my insurance and I had to wait before that for Medicare to kick in so it has been torn for almost 3 months So i am 65 old IKNOW ...But I love to rock and my neighbors Are getting thinned out oh yeah i had 18.75 arms before the tear ...So we have some things in common!!
I bought--within the last couple of years--a (used) Vintage V100 Gold Top with P-90's; love the way it looks and sounds! The only thing I'm not too fond of is the weight...well worth it tho.
@@michelerosevear7466 Yeah, that's always been the drawback with most Les Paul style guitars: THE WEIGHT! there are some very good ones that are "Weight Relief" and don't weigh as much, but gold tops are rather heavy. That's one reason why I wouldn't get into a fight with Pete Townsend.
Great video... I thought the axe sounded great and looked really good except for the random dots next to the pickups. Those seemed strangely out of place for no good reason.
My first real guitar was a Norlin era, '78 Gibson LP Custom in black with gold hardware (2 humbuckers), felt like it was made of cement and cast iron. Heaviest guitar I've ever owned. Don't miss it. Is the Vintage chambered? How much does it weigh? I like the look Vintage V1003 in Alpine White.
I have a question. I'm going to purchase a guitar with 3 humbucker pick ups in it just like this vintage or a Firefly. My question is this, when upgrading the pickups, what does one do? Do you get all 3 bridge pick ups? Do you get a combi for the neck and bridge and if so, what type of pick up is the center positron pick up since most combinations are only bridge and neck? Thank you.
My cousin has an early 1970’s Les Paul custom that used to be his dads. It’s either black or a very dark red or purple, I can’t remember clearly, but yeah it has three pickups for SURE! He didn’t know if it was worth anything, took it to a shop and asked if it still useable because a few strings are busted!! Shit!
Not to change the subject, but what ever happened to that guitar build, and review. 🤘. By the way awesome video and the black beauty is beautiful beast.
Does Vintage build one with 3 P90s, a chambered body, 24 frets and a Fender-style vibrato system? If not, that makes this guitar extra tempting, even though I've already got too many.
Hey friends! I have launched a Kickstarter campaign for my new full-length solo album! Please check it out here: www.kickstarter.com/projects/maxcarlisle/max-carlisle-titanium-reign

My dad had a Black Beauty LP when I was growing up and I wasn’t even allowed to touch it. Makes me want one of these even more.
Difference is because your dads was a real Les Paul and this is a junk Chinese copy.
You had wise parents....
You can get one, but don't you touch it
My 2000 Gibson/Epi Black Beauty 3 was my first "real" (pro level/pricey) guitar.

Peter Frampton comes to mind when I hear the tones. Pretty awesome guitar IMHO. Great video Max.
Lately, one of my favorite guitars has been my SG Custom 3 humbucker guitar. It's a delight to play. The variety of tones is absolutely inspiring.
Which humbuckers did you decide to go with? I'm looking to build a guitar similar to this

The black & gold contrast. Wow!
Bought one of these 3 years ago new £240 , it is a beautiful looking and sounding guitar and it's still in tune from new .
The versatility of the Black Beauty is why guys like Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, and Peter Frampton relied on them in the studio (as well as on tour).

For that matter it kinda looks like the middle pickup is lowered. Which is interesting because you could probably raise it for an even beefier tone
Most people “slam” the middle pup because it can get in the way of strumming hand/fingers.

I love the 3 pickup Gretsch!!!
Very cool, and looks like the Peter Frampton Gibson signature model.
What kind of hardware and pickups would you swap into it?
Great!
Man I love that thing!
3 pickups on sounds like a muddy mess to be frank
Cool guitar 🎸, want one like that, perhaps with a slim tapered D shape neck and 16" radius on the fretboard. Do any know of a guitar like that? 😀
What I wanted to know was if the middle pick up was out of phase, looks like maybe not?
Doesn't it also have push/pull pots? Would've loved to hear a demo of those tones as well...
Rondo music was making/importing a 3 pickup ' black beauty" clone 4 a while.
I waited too long and missed out, of course,, lol
DRINKING GAME !!!
Try to take a swallow every time Max says the word “Guitar” without passing out or going into an alcohol induced coma.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I've heard good things about the Vintage company. I definitely am interested in their Les Paul gold top with P-90 pick ups, and their line of SGs.
Hey Maxx stupid question. Do you find yourself scratching on the middle pickup
I need an excellent Les Paul electric guitar exactly like this one!
Most Beautiful guitar,I love Black and gold,I have an Aspen guitar of the same colors.
Cool guitar, sounds great.
Just bought it
GREAT VIDEO!!!
Thank you.
All those pickups get in the way for me...
I have a triple pickup Les Paul and I have to say that vintage guitar keeps right up with it in sound quality and tone
Shit!
It’s the Corvette of guitars!
"Unlimited Tone" ..is my new band name :)
I wish they listed the prices on their website , I even put in my zip code and it says there's nothing near me?🤔
Not to change the subject, but what ever happened to that guitar build, and review. 🤘. By the way awesome video and the black beauty is beautiful beast.
The finished guitar video is coming very soon!!
Nice guitar, great playing. Max, I wonder if I might ask what strings and tuning you're using on that one?
Dude a triple p90 version of this would be cool
I dont like LP style guitars but that is a stunner.
What is the price range of the guitar
Does Vintage build one with 3 P90s, a chambered body, 24 frets and a Fender-style vibrato system? If not, that makes this guitar extra tempting, even though I've already got too many.
