I have their hendrix strat and it easily has the best neck of any guitar I have ever owned and I am 58 years old and into and playing guitars since I was about 16. To some degree just the feeling in my hands reminds me of a 1964 Gibson SG I had when I was in my mid 20s. Obviously I am not talking about the tone but just the tactile feeling of the wood of the SG. These are awsome guitars for the money. It can be hard to find them online. I got mine in a pawnshop. I had no idea about the company previously.

JHS in the UK (John Hornby Skewes) have been selling Vintage as their house brand for over twenty years - I bought one when they first started and reviewed it on Harmony Central..... eons ago.
P.S. "Vantage" was a brand from the old Matsumoku factory in Japan - the name was sold to Samick in Korea after the japanese factory fire. - The Japanese ones are epic and the Korean ones solid decent kit.
    Have fun

I’ve had a vintage V6, Thomas Blug strat that has some pretty trick wiring in it also from the factory. It’s a copy of a 61 Strat. I love it plays beautiful..My only complaint with vintage guitars is I wish they’d used a harder nickel in their frets seem to be wearing the frets out kinda quickly. They’ve been around for quite a while, I totally get where you’re coming from with the name though. Great review as always keep it up and thanks

I bought a couple of Vintage guitars used and I love them. One is a gold top LP style. It had Wilkinson stacked P90’s in it and they sounded good, but when I converted my Gibson LP Deluxe to a P90 (Mojotone Quiet Coil P90’s), I had my tech put the Gibson mini humbuckers in the Vintage along with 50’s wiring, CTS pots, Orange Drop caps, etc., and it’s now every bit as good as a Gibson. In fact, I think my Vintage feels closer to a Gibson than the Epiphone 59 LP I had with Gibson BB pups in it. I also have a Vintage SG style (VS6 I think is the model) with a vibrola and I put a Gibson 490R/T set from my LP Tribute when I put some Mojotone ‘59 clones in it and it’s also a great guitar. I would buy another Vintage and recommend them without hesitation. New ones are reasonably priced and you can often find great deals on used ones.

I’ve had 3 of these 2 strats and a “lemon drop” relic’d Les Paul. All were great guitars (that I eventually got rid of to get the “real thing”. They all played and sounded great. I had 2 V6 and at the same time a mim player strat. I never touched the player strat again once I got the v6’s. They just felt and sounded so much better than the player strat. That said, I would never buy one of these new. You can get them all day long for $200-$300 bucks. If you buy a new one for $599, the minute you take it out of the box it’s worth $300. The player strat I bought as a floor demo, kept it for 2 years and sold it for a little more than I paid for it. So, my only advice is get a used one.

  •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I’ve had a few Vintage models for years (V100 lemon drop and V100 gold top with P90s, an original V60 that got them in trouble with Gibson and the redesigned model).
I’ve also sold a ton, as they set up beautifully, as they’re basically well made budget guitars. The Icon series is a step up in quality. I picked up a V6 recently, with three P90s, in a Strat configuration. Great sound with a really lovely neck.

I currently have 2 JHS Vintage guitars in my collection, a very old V6 (*strat) pre the Reissued and ICON series that has all the Wilkinson hardware that I have converted to a baritone with a new neck and a V58JD (*telecaster) Jerry Donahue model. I have previously owned 2 further VInage guitars, the V6 JMH (which I sold to someone learning as their first electric) and an AV6 (excellent guitar I should never have sold). Vintage guitars are superb, I always buy one before buying a Fender because I just can't bring myself to pay for the name. The V58JD is so good it completely negated my intense dislike of Tele's! Really glad to see you featuring these guitars and yes, the name could be better ;)

Vintage guitars have a series called the Icon Series. When I want to find the vintage website I search for vintage icon. They make a great Tele called the Jerry Donahue V58. It is a great signature guitar. Trev Wilkerson owns vintage and all of his parts are used on these guitars. One of the reasons why these are so good.

  • @willv2747
    @willv2747 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I have a Vintage V6 icon SSS strat and it sounds better than any sub 1.5k Fender I’ve tried in a store. The finish and attention to detail was in some places sloppy, with a nut that stuck out a bit and some paint on the neck that needed sanding, but after fixing those things the guitar is smooth and much more inspiring than its Squier or MIM strat counterparts. It made me love strats again -- the neck pickup nails it, and the bridge pickup is highly usable and versatile thanks to it having its own dedicated tone knob (no more ice-pick tone unless you want it). HOWEVER, the quality control on these guitars is extremely variable, so I would recommend only buying these guitars either a) from an online store with its own strict QC, or b) after seeing the actual guitar first. I once went to a store that had 3 Vintage T-style guitars and 2 Vintage strats: the T-style guitars didn’t feel that good and one of the strats was embarrassingly badly put together, while the other strat was the BEST strat I’ve ever played in a store, beautifully finished, very stratty and perfect in every way (and the same price as all the others, go figure). I also just tried a Vintage T-style in the used section of a Guitar Center and it was more inspiring to me than any of the Fenders (or other guitars I tried in that store, period), and I’m strongly considering going back and buying it, even though I don't normally like teles. As another TH-camr has said, they make the best guitars for the money and the worst guitars for the money - definitely worth checking out and worth the risk to get a good one.

Always, when the quantity of demand and production rises, the quality of the more reasonable priced instruments goes down. Happened before, happens right now with brands (i could name a few) and imo it's hard to expect the opposite ;)

Vintage guitars have been around for many years here in the Uk, they are distributed by JHS.
If you can find an older sample with genuine Wlikinson parts they are a serious affordable
alternative to Fenders crazy priced samples that players go for.
Be wary of the more recent samples, Trevor Wilkinson no longer visits the factory
and an alarming quantity are available on ebay with cosmetic defects, but a lot have cracks
at the neck pocket, inspect before you buy.
Find a good one, and for the price they will give any Fender a hard time beating it.

I agree that the name is confusing but I was assuming that it's intentions were to build their own guitar's with vintage specs and some upgrades too! Great video.

now that you've mentioned Vantage, might be worth to give that brand a 2nd look, if you can cop samples of it. they have a pretty diverse model line - from Strats/Teles/Les Paul bodied planks to V's, stars and Explorer styled bodies.

I’ve gigged one for years . About the only things that need doing is file out the fret ends for fret sprout , and replace the wiring harness, pots, and switch - the pickups are nice, hot, Alnico units with cloth wires with a great tone, but the pots, switch etc, are small and eventually start failing. Swap out for a set of CTS and Oak, and you’re good to go

I own a few ‘vintage’ brand guitars with the Wilkinson hardware I’ve gigged with all of them always very reliable. I also have a couple of Fret King guitars which are kind of like the high end versions of Vintage one is made in Korea the other is handmade in the UK. Fret King are easily comparable to Fender and Gibson

The "Vintage" brand has been big here in the U.K for over 20 years now, and are probably the biggest "home grown" guitar brand available here.
They are for sale in many shops in the U.K, and have quite a lot of famous endorsees and users, including Thomas Blug, Geoff Whitehorn, Jerry Donahue, Carry Martin, Paul Brett, Gordon Giltrap, and Midge Ure.
Ive had many, and never had a bad one.
    Unlike Gibson and Fender.
Ive currently got a Vintage VS6, which is like an SG, and I can honestly say it is a BETTER guitar than the last Gibson SG I had.
Mine was made in Vietnam (...cue American chuckles), and the fit and finish is perfect.

No chuckling here. You're right. These are great instruments. Also, it doesn't matter where a guitar is built, as long as the people building them know what they're doing. As a long time player, modder, and builder, my favorite guitars come from south Korea.

They may be a secret in America but they are readily available and all over the place in the UK. I have owned 5 or 6 different models over the years and currently have a Vintage Lemon Drop (with the Peter Green out-of-phase sound as standard). As good as any Les Paul I have had. I happen to agree with you about the name though. I always thought that they should simply be called Wilkinson since Trev Wilkinson was behind the design. His name carries much more "heft" and makes more sense.BTW there was a company called "Vantage". They were made in Korea and I have one!!

    • @gthomson8065
      @gthomson8065 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Just a clarification, Vantage was originally made in Japan in the 70s and 80s by Matsumoku, the same maker that produced Aria and other top notch brands. It went out of business in the late eighties and the rights to the “Vantage” brand was purchased by a Korean company. The original MIJ Vantages are awesome. The Korean ones aren’t as good but still solid.

Hi max ! I have one the Vintage v6 fillmore with reverse headstock and reverse angle bridge pickup ! it's one of my favorite strat i have ! i have fender usa ,squier japan, squier classic vibe ,many copy of strat . my top 4 is squier strat obey series , fender us 62 ressuie from 1993 ,my squier classic vibe 50 and the vintage v6 fillmore !
The vintage v6 fillmore is very similar to a squier classic vibe or mexican fender strat for me .
I don't love the icon series because the relicage is not good..... if you see it from distance it's well ,but it's very fake when you have the guitar on hand ...
I prefer the "standard series" .

I was shopping for my Evh wolfgang on black Friday when I came across a used Vintage SG wine red with 3 humbuckers. It looked and felt exactly like Gibson, I mean the binding on the neck, the frets, everything literally felt like a Gibson with a different logo. I know this because I grew up playing my fathers 1976 les paul deluxe. The neck on this guitar blew me away I almost bought both guitars. I went back the next day to buy a cable and the guitar was gone. I searched just like you looking for where to find another one and found a dealer on the website, but have yet to stop by. Great guitars!

I own their version of an ES-355 with the "correct" horn shape before Vintage was told to change the shape; now they're more askew, and my one is a killer guitar and it looks so classy in black with the binding and gold hardware. It's currently living in its case due to a broken pot and will eventually be fixed and then 'murdered out' in either all-black or black and chrome.
Edit: Vantage guitars already exist. Sorry Max!
