This is something I have just been looking for something real and straight to the point and this video made me cry because I need this in a couple of situations. I am a single mom to a beautiful 3 1/2 yr old boy diagnosed with autism. It's been difficult so thank you so much for taking time and explaining the process it means a lot to see and hear someone who cares 🙏 ❤️ much love
I am following your techniques and my son is progressing he knows he has to pee or poop when sitting on a potty and that one achievement is something to celebrate for me as a mom. Thanks sir. Editing this comment 3 years later: my son now goes by himself whenever he has the urge😊
Hi! I've been working with my client with potty training for over a year now. At this stage we are trying to teach him to initiate going potty. He will go on his own at home and get up and go to the bathroom but won't tell his family when he needs to go. The family wants him to be able to tell them so that they can generalize this when they drive around in the car or have family outings. He can usually wait to go to the potty between at hour/hour and a half now. In between taking him to the potty I run between two to three schedules with four activities on the schedule that last anywhere between three-ten minutes a piece (alternating token training for his first work at the beginning of every schedule with his chosen reinforcer, maintenance program and then a five to ten minute break) once the last schedule is complete we usually show him a potty visual (doesn't have velcro so we can't put it on his vas) and show him potty, which he points to, says, and will allow me to lead him to go to the bathroom whether he goes or not. Any suggestions on how to teach a learner how to expressively initiate potty? He's four and we've been working on his functional speech since he's been in early intervention but demonstrates scripting and vocal stereotypy.
Thank you so much, your videos are clear and to the point, step by step instructions. I would like to know how to engage a child that talks to her self or scripts a lot .. how do I get her to talk functionally and engage with us!
My son will be 5 this June. He knows that he has to pee or poop in the potty but the problem with him is he doesn't care letting out in his pants if he's not taken in time he doesn't even care if he's wet he can still play or sleep if he's wet
Thanks for your kind words. Unfortunately medical school takes up most of my time, but there will be a new video where I interview a BCBA about career options in ABA coming out within a few weeks!
Mauricio Borda I wish you much success in medical school. I hope you will keep your videos up so people like my self can reference them from time to time.
Just amazing! same thing for nighttime? underwear in the diaper? been loving those videos, so so helpful and i did pass the exam, too. Thanks for the inspiration!
Hello I had a question for you. How to we potty train and maintain client dignity? Thank you very much! Love your videos and I’m about to take my exam 😊
@@lovealwaysbibi3336 Progress is progress... That's great!!! I can't wait to get some time under my melt... This is nerve wracking!!! Day 1... My only child... I'm somewhat lost!!! Like... Full cammando... Pullups... Just underwear or training pants!!!🤷🏼♀️ My goodness... Decisions... Decisions!!!
@@ghfamghgam1172 I've had zero success with my son... He shows no interest what so ever in the potty... He recently got diagnosed with Autism and Apraxia of speech... He will be 5 soon... Hopefully soon I will have a breakthrough... I've tried EVERYTHING!!!🤞🏻
Question? trying to potty train my 3 year old autistic and non-verbal son. He also has sensory issues. You mentioned if they don’t know how to change clothing or anything yet then those steps should come first? so should I wait since he isn’t putting clothes on yet? We’ve been trying to time it with his RBT and we do the no diaper, positive reward and everything and he has been holding his pee it on the toilet especially in the day. I have got him to pee twice as soon as i am ready to change his first morning diaper, I see he wants to pee so I put him on potty and he goes in a few minutes. Other than that when his RBT comes he either has accident pee on the floor or if we put him on toilet he squeezes his private as if to hold if from peeing and this could be from an hour ago and you know he needs to go and then we put his diaper on and then 2 mins he goes as if he is waiting for his diaper to go on and he knows we end up putting it on. Are we doing something wrong? don’t want to wait until late to potty train him I heard it gets more hard to do
Hi I’m based in London, and finally started looking into ABA for my non verbal 5yr old I’ve only watched two of your videos and I am so ambitious about it ... however, I cannot identify anything to reinforce my son with He is not hard to please and mostly happy and content . He dosnt seem to have any hobbies interests favourite toys ect He likes some snack choc - but giving food at all times for eg in the context of potty training may not be ideal ie at night time Or for speech worried about focusing on chocolate and giving it that much worth due to health reasons He has always liked the alphabet and it also helps him calm down but not sure what I can do with that Could you possibly have any ideas Thanks
@Rachel is My Angel a mummy is what is in a tomb a mommy is someone who carries a baby in the womb. Leave that woman alone and let us learn in peace sheesh
i would focus on Functional Communication at this point. Toilet training can come later. He needs to have a system to communicate his needs. you can work on increasing motivation by putting things within eyesight but out of reach. This will give you more opportunities for him to request for a variety of things.
I use the alphabet song for teeth brushing. He knows how to brush and potty, he just regressed again and refuses to go so I backed off and stopped being so forceful. So far its helping some.
Hi, my son is 7 years old non verbal, has autism. I am working on his potty training from years now. I have not been consistent for more than a week , I will explain why. He does potty in a standing position in a diaper only so if I remove his diaper , he can hold his potty for days even with the laxative medicines and enema he is able to hold his potty and ends up getting sick. So I had to break my potty training schedule and made him wear diaper . I tried this on and off for years but nothing is working . So my challenges are diaper and potty in a standing position. He doesn't know how to do potty in a sitting position though I clean him on a toilet seat and dispose potty in front of him in commode and flush . He doesn't have any problem in sitting on a commode even for 15 minutes. Can you please help me what should I do? He has GERD so I can't make him potty hold for more than 2 days. I am feeling so tired , I feel like I am giving up. I tried very high reinforcement.
If you check out my video on the first sessions of therapy, I go over instructional control a bit! Hope that helps! th-cam.com/video/SWmEe5QPDo8/w-d-xo.html
love the video, but what if you have a child that throws a fit getting his diaper changed and he yells and screams no no no when you even mention the word potty, how do you make it a positive experience and get them to even get into the bathroom.
Any recommendations for getting my 2 1/2 year old autistic child to want to sit on the toilet? My kid just wants to get up immediately or put her hands under her leg because she wants to put her hand inside the toilet.

What do you mean about putting the underwear between the diaper and child? Do you mean diaper first and then underwear as the outerwear? Can you please elaborate. Thank you!

I tried putting underwear on him with waterproof underwear on top but he would pee in them and then tell me he is wet. Same with my son. He's refusing adamantly to toilet train. I hate to put him in diapers however I can't count how many times I've had to call the carpet cleaner because he prefers the floor rather than either the potty or the toilet. Tried for at least a year now. Just feel like giving up. He runs around away when being told. It's like he's scared to use them.
@@aojuri01 I'm experiencing the same thing. We've been working on potty training for about 7 months. He used to pee at least once a day, but has now regressed. Of course, he strips off everything and then is all excited when he comes out (we don't have lots of company over LOL!!!) And we celebrate!!! But we have no idea why some days are "good" loo days and some are "bad" loo days. I will try this method to see if this will work, but we will see....LOL my daughter even got him a kids urinal she set up in the downstairs walk in shower (his own personal urinal) but he strips before he goes in and its not good when hes out and my hubby tries to take him to the loo 😉 LOL!!!
