BTW I think the comment that hurts the most is that as a Mom I'm not trying hard enough. I've trained his older sister, no problem. With autism it's a completely different playing field. Thank you for doing these videos. You have the gift of compassion for us parents

Thank you for saying this. It’s especially hard when your autistic child is your first and so far only child, because you aren’t able to tell yourself “I did a fine job with my non-autistic child so I know it’s not a problem with my parenting.” The question of whether I’m trying hard enough and doing my best for my son never really leaves me.

My son is 5 and has autism...and quarantine helped me Complete potty train him. I didn’t use rewards I just got rid of the pull-ups put him on the potty every 20 minutes daily for about 2 weeks, and I would wake him up once through the night...while using his speech device so he could ask, and he caught on...now he just goes into the bathroom or points or asks on his speech device. He has the occasional accident but they are far and few. He can now sleep through the night with no accidents, and I couldn’t be more proud of him. For the parents struggling...it will happen...just be consistent. Good Luck!

I don't want my son to feel shame or anxiety at all when it comes to potty training. I could feel the amount of judging eyes whenever I enter a room full of people, some family and friends, staring at my 5 yo in a diaper. Your video has helped me out tremendously. ❤️

I wish I knew more about my son earlier so I could have found this video ❤️ he’s (I don’t know if this is correct to say) “high functioning” autistic spectrum, basically what they used to consider Aspergers. It took until 5 1/2 to be fully potty trained and we just thought he was stubborn and wasn’t ready because he seemed like the average kid in every other way. I was so embarrassed not of him but because I figured I just wasn’t doing a good enough job. I’m still frustrated that we and our pediatrician didn’t figure it out sooner. Everyone kept asking if I had tried sticker charts and rewards as if that wasn’t the first thing we tried. I’m sharing this in hopes that it helps someone similar. Be patient, I thought we’d never get where we are to be honest

thank you Rosie I also felt that the pediatrician failed us as we kept on going there asking him to check if there is anything not okay about him as we were worried about speach delayed, holding of his ears, humming and still on his nappies he said he does not see anything. we even went to an ENT he also said there is noting wrong with him it just a behavior imagine until we took him to day care when he was 2 1/2 yr and they did and assessment and referred to us to OT and the rest is history.

@@juniormako6184 I’m not looking to “cure” my son. If autism makes up a large part of who he is then I love autism. He needs skills to adapt to a Neurotypical world as much as a neurotypical world needs education to accept him for who he is and make other autistic people more comfortable. It’s their world too why should they have to change to be like everyone else

Thank you. My son has SPD and he's almost 4yo and not yet potty trained. He used to tell us when he had a soiled diaper but as soon as we started visiting the potty he reverted to hiding when he had to poo or pee. I've felt like the most terrible mother for not being able to start this process, as well as having people like my mother yak over how at his age "you were already potty trained". It is very overwhelming but if you have a child with special needs it feels unsurmountable at times. I have the additional pressure of him having to be trained before school in August. Knowing others go through this and are able to find solutions is comforting.

Tara , really good advices!!! I first tried when he was 2...he wasn't ready...2.5 I tried again...I found on internet a 5-step picture guide...put your pants down, sit on toilet, do your weewees/poos, flush, wash hands....I put the pictures in bathroom's wall so everytime I would sit him on his potty he could see the pictures and hear the actions...this help him a lot!!! So my 1st advice would be "Use pictures". 2nd "Try to keep him on the toilet as much possible"...I didn't use bubbles but I used numbers...he could count up to 20, so first I had a paper with the numbers up to 10, after while up to 20 and after while up to 30 (he was sitting on toilet and learning counting at the same time). Every mother can use whatever the kid likes..photos of cars, whatever will keep him as much as possible sitting on the toilet...this is because he needs to get used the feeling of the cold surface... .3rd "After every meal or time that drinks water, take him to sit on the toilet". These are the times that he probably needs the toilet. 4th" Lot of praise!!! for every tiny success!Make it a big deal. Tell to everyone!"...He took me 6 months of trying but he is toilet trained..

E Obst I can’t imagine that must be so difficult my advice to you would be the one at a time is there one that seems more ready than the other also when you try and teach one usually the other one follows I potty trained Luca when he was 2 1/2 Dylan was 5 1/2 almost 6 and he just followed along. It’s almost like he felt the pressure was of him and therefore when he saw his sibling do it he wanted to do it x

@@ComingHometoAutism love the fact that once Luca was potty trained, Dylan decided he had better get with it, or he'll be in diapers while Luca is wearing big boy underpants. This is usually the case although normally reversed with the younger sibling being trained earlier after watching his big brother or sister using the toilet.

I encourage all parents to take care of themselves in addition to their child. If you don't, you're not going to be much use down the road. I've watched the mother of my wife's 4 yo autistic granddaughter go from a vibrant young woman to someone who is withdrawn, depressed, and suffers from skin rashes and hair loss in this same amount of time. My wife and I see Luna 4-5 times a week and do what we can so the parents can have some limited rest. I'm glad I stayed in decent shape at 66 so I can pull Luna 2-3 miles in her Radio Flyer wagon when she comes over. I love her so much.

I've been watching your videos with your husband and we went through it all. I know you are talking about toilet training and I thought my son would never get there. We were lucky enough that his 1st grade teacher took it on. She took him to the bathroom every so often whether he needed to go or not. If he went he got something that was fantastic to him, in our case, it was M&M's. he was very motivative by this. She did this everyday for a week and boom, he was trained!! I could cry! Coming across your video has been an absolute god send. I struggled with smearing for a while and thankfully my almost 4 year old seems to have stopped. The issue we are having now is that he seems to unaware he needs to go to the toilet. He uses the toilet when prompted and is brilliant about it, loves the routine of it but sensory issues seem to be problem. I'm going to give the app a go and see if it helps with giving him some way of communicating that he needs to go. Thank you!

As part of my research on ASD, I have been following your videos. My daughter is on the spectrum and I had tried at different stages to potty train her which failed. I wanted to try again this year as she was about to turn four and I wanted to be prepared. I decided to get your book "coming home to autism". Initially, as I was reading the potty training section of the book, I thought to myself, this is not what I am looking for. I was wrong! I jumped the gun too quickly. I want to let you know that section became a game-changer for us (especially the Ava Kids App you recommended). I got the app installed on my daughter's tablet, and after 3 days, I made a breakthrough. My daughter just turned four years a couple of weeks ago and it's been one month of potty training and she gets it now. She can wipe after pee, but still working on the wiping after a poo. There are still accidents once in a while when she gets engrossed in playing but, I am so thankful for the progress after trying and failing a couple of times.
Sorry for writing too long, I just wanted to say thank you soo much for sharing with us and your book has proven really helpful in our journey with our daughter.

My boy turned 10 last week- tried several times when he was younger. He’s in pads and nappies. Next week I’m on a two week sabbatical as the summer hols start. But this time I’m more engaged as he is my job for the next two weeks. It will get messy. His brothers will not be happy. And despite being on sabbatical, in pandemic and other work elements will intrude (eg interviewing someone from home...) - so her we go. And he’s ten - but he tells me he’s filled his nappy for the last 6 months - so there might be a chance. He’s gorgeous by the way and his vocabulary exploded in the last few months

I have autism I was nonverbal till 9, and potty training was terrible. I still remember at 36.I wish my mum never used a potty and just got the seat you can't put to make it smaller. I used colour fruit loops for my autistic male cousin and got him to draw on table tennis balls. Put them in the toilet they don't flush away and get him to slowly aim for the fruit loops or ball. Yup, smell is a big thing. Keep the bathroom colours, not to bright calming colours work

Omgggggg i did not know it was a sensory thing... my 4yr old use to do it when he was 2. Our 2yr old who just turn 3 likes to put his hands back there period while sucking his thumb 🤯 lol our 3yr old walks around bouncing when he has to poo so we try to run him to the toilet ASAP. Our 4yr old was potty trained a week before his 3rd bday. We just needed to be consistent and random with him. Sending him to the potty all the time.

Wondering if you have any advice for me, since I’ve reached out to everyone I can think of and everyone just keeps telling me “I don’t know” 🥺
My son will be 5 in August and when the stay at home order happened from Covid (March 2020) we decided it was time to try potty training. Per the recommendation of his occupational therapist we prompted him to go every hour, then every two hours and finally every 2-3 hours. It worked wonderfully for about 9-10 months, no accidents! He started preschool and has only had two accidents at school, the last was over 4 months ago. Super super proud of him!
However... he started having accidents at home a few months ago. Because of this, we were told to stop prompting him, so he could learn his own body. Now that we are no longer prompting him to go, he is having many many accidents at home.. still no accidents at school.
I don’t know the proper way to handle this. If I keep prompting him, he is likely not going to have accidents.. but will he ever learn to go on his own and listen to his body? We have baby brother joining us this summer, I’m sure that’s cause for the regression/accidents.. but I don’t want to be cleaning up big brothers accidents while trying to heal from delivery if I can help it.

I'm so grateful for finding this video. I've been overwhelmed and embarrassed about my daughter's poo smearing and have been on youtube tiktok Instagram for about a year finding out any information about it and how to clean it and nothing. Until yesterday I just couldn't take it anymore and created my own concoction to clean it up and finally I'm able to breathe. Now I'm getting new flooring put in her room to make clean up easier. I want to potty train her but she has a fear of sitting down on the toilet so wondering if I should hold off until she's comfortable enough to sit on the toilet?

I've been asking my doctor if my twin boys had autism they keep saying no. there are things they do that normal kids just don't do. 1. freak out to change their diapers they kick and cry. 2. throw their food on the floor if you touch it or try to hand them food they will throw it across the Livingroom. 3. their blankets they will not sleep with no other blanket they will stay awake until they get their blanket back. 3. I say to my son Elijah hello hi Elijah he will get mad and run and hide from me. they are not talking still like other kids their age. they repeat words they recognize words on the t.v. and colors. they freak out about brushing their teeth until they are ready to do it. i'm having a really hard time with the boys and I don't know if its just them being brats or something more serious.

My daughter is not potty trained, she is about six, she isn't non-verbal but she does have a lot of trouble with getting some words out we do have a communication device for her just in case for any situations,We have tried to go straight to underwear didn't work we went to the pull ups they didn't work a lot but they did work a couple times..
A couple of suggestions I would recommend for any child who is starting potty training, just try to go straight to whatever your child needs and if they aren't ready then don't push them though, because they will get it eventually my daughter is almost potty trained..

I have a suggestion to start one thing at a time. I have started my kids to wash them on toilet after they go pee or poo( in diaper offcourse), everytime i change their diaper i wash them with water first. I have spray bidet. So now they are already used to go and sit on toilet seat and used to get washed. I am gonna start potty train them this summer. 4 1/2 yr old and 3 yr old both autistic. Hopefully it goes well. And i have an other suggestion that if you have to use pullup(yes its hard to wash carpet after kids pee and it smells bad) use underware first before putting on the pullups. So when they go they still feel the wet underware but pullups will soak the extra pee. And i learned to take your child to bathroom every half hr or so, dnt wait too long bcz otherwise they ll have an accident.
