Punk is definitely a satire of its namesake genre. Damon was going for the same thing he did with Blur a few years earlier on Song 2 where he was basically just making fun of grunge.

There's not even a single song in Humanz that isn't a collaboration. Yeah, collabs are an important part of Gorillaz albums, and there is other major issues with the album, but barely even having the lead singer of his own band actually doing anything beyond hard to hear chorus in the background is a huge flaw.

Dracula is decent, Starshine is good, but Latin Simone is really good. The English and Spanish versions tell a story; The Spanish is a friend or a brother trying to talk his friend/brother out of suicide, while the English one is about a man contemplating suicide.

  • @zerwee7409

M1 A1 is one of my favorites. The intro is just so chilling at first, and when the guitar comes in, it just creates this awful suspense, but at the same time you still want to be in that part of the song, and then when the drums and the actual song comes in, it sounds beautiful.
It’s driving, it’s wild, if you want to end an album, end it like this; Full of energy, life, and it really makes you feel happy, or good listening to it. The happiness that people talk about in songs like “Re-Hash” and “19-2000” isn’t really there for me because of some of the creepy/offsetting effects/synths in those songs. But in M1 A1, the blend of offsetting and energy is just amazing to me. The intro isn’t straight up offsetting, the build up, of the kick pedal, and the bass, and the “DING DING, DING DING” you hear or the weird keyboard thing made after the “Is anyone there?”, and the scratchy fade in, or the car shutting, just adds more to the aesthetic of the intro, and the track overall. But like I said, it isn’t just straight up offsetting, it’s intriguing, it’s chilling, it catches your attention, and then once everything kicks in, it keeps your attention, but also pulls you and your attention even deeper into it when the rocky punk vocals, or the “LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA HEY” and then the screaming kicks in. The rockiness, is what makes it sound so good, my friend. It’s not a turn off at all. If anything, it’s a turn on. And when the aggressive guitar at the end comes in, you’re expecting such a big and loud finish (Which it seems to provide), and the more it continues, you’re expecting it to pull you off your chair or bed, or wherever you’re sitting/standing on, and just, blast you to space. And then when it ends, with the guitar feedback, after that last loud guitar chord is finished, with the accompaniment of the crash symbol, it just ends very flawlessly, and although the outro isn’t as big as you expect, it still feels epic, and leaves you trembling in the noise around/inside you.

I think when reviewing albums you should focus on the base album without the bonus tracks so you can get a better feel for the albums aesthetic that was attempted without the extra songs, and i feel like Latin Simone was highly underrated, if you're gonna include the bonus songs then you should listen to the G-Sides English version where it's more of a conversation to go with Latin Simone. Both songs are perfectly together so please re listen!

As a British fan I honestly don't consider some of these songs part of the album - a lot of the lower ranked ones are on English G-Sides, and the only "bonus" tracks we got were Clint Eastwood Refix 19-2000 Soulchild Remix. It's weird how the release of this Phase's songs vary from country to country, but it makes for an interesting comparison.

Hell yeah, Tomorrow Comes Today as #2 is well deserved. It was one of the first tunes I heard from Gorillaz (and is also apparently the first commercial song the band released), and even though it wasn't indicative of the direction their sound would go, it's such a uniquely haunting and depressing track with some of the most memorable lines from 2D imo. If some of the underlying theories and ideas about the song are true too (like 2D abusing medication which in turn could be referencing Damon's heroin addiction he had in the 90s), then it's even more depressing than it is on it's own.
The whole thing is this weird turn of the century song filled both with angst and melancholy, and I've never quite heard anything like it before or after. Such a good fucking song.

I love your reasoning and criticisms, and your format/editing is really entertaining. I hope you keep doing more gorillaz stuff :) keep up the good work. When I get together some money I’ll definitely support you on patreon dude

I feel like a big reason a lot of people dislike Latin Simone is because they don’t speak Spanish. I would suggest to anyone who dislikes it to look at the English version from G-Sides.

Was disappointed that you panned Slow Country, it's absolutely my favorite song on the album (maybe tied with Sound Check) and I love the wind sound effect- but I'm also much more lyrics + feels focused and am not really a great judge of music and soundscapes and all of the stuff that is your wheelhouse. Great video, your rank/ reviews are definitely your most interesting even though the emo pandering gets the most views

When I first heard Slow Country I thought it was draggy and exhausting. I often would just forget it even existed.
And now it's my 2nd favorite on the album.

fun fact its sampled off of The Specials - 'Ghost Town', the sample includes the drums and the 'wind' sound together so it wouldve been hard to remove the wind without altering the drums and staying honest to the sound. plus i reckon the wind is cool!

I agree with this guy. This album has some serious pacing issues, it could’ve been shrunk down to a 40 minute album to feature all of the great singles and some of the other songs, like Re-Hash or Punk. If that were the case, the album would be fantastic.
