6:20 You're right, but Gilgamesh really enjoys human drama and watching mortals struggle. For him, waiting for Shirou and Saber to finish to talk is kinda like watching a theater play. Also, he considers himself way too superior to Shiro to use a sneak attack on him: as you've seen, he even refuses to use Ea (his strongest weapon) against Shirou, just because he doesn't consider him worthy.
Yeah, it would be very out of character for Gilgamesh to instantly finish Shirou with Ea. It's same thing if real life president of nuclear country would order nuclear strike against single ant. it would be stupid to use your strongest weapons again very weak enemy. 😂
It's reasonable to think that Archer was summoned as a Counter Guardian and that's why he's back. But that's not what happened. Archer just 400 IQ'd everyone by dematerializing just as Gil fired at him and escaped behind the dust, leaving behind pieces of his cloak to fool him. Then he spent the next day munching on forest animals (the famous einzbern forest ghosts) for mana. That guy's pretty wild. P/s: Yes, it's schlocky writing, and it wasn't even explained in the OG game, but in an author's interview. But there's a certain charm in Archer's last act being a nonsense moment you'd expect from a classical shounen hero.
Nasu did say that jokingly though, so who knows. Though didn't he also mention that Archer made a bunch of stockpiles of weapons around the city that he absorbed on for their energy or am I just imagining stuff again? Also, Archer OP. Dude stretched Independent Action way past its limit. He deployed a Reality Marble, the one spell that the World will specifically jump at to obliterate, two times with no energy source. Gets stabbed. Gets shot at with swords and hit. Gets shot at again but runs away. Survives for a whole ass day. Handcrafts bow and arrow just to kill Gil. The best part is that there is another explanation that gets forgotten but works in tandem with Archer hunting around. Determination is literally a canonical way to generate magical energy. The amount of determination needed though is immense to even get a small amount, but it is possible. Archer really did pull a shounen hero moment.
A couple things about Reality Marble. It is extremely difficult and complicated magic (and forbidden too), you can say it`s one step from True magic. The concept itself of it is basically alien to humans, which makes it`s extremely rare. One of key requirements for obtaining this type of spell is specific state of mind that that can be considered as form of insanity. Because of that, normal mage will have to spend many decades, if not hundreds of years to make it happen. In UBW, Shirou learned in less than 2 weeks, because of Archer`s influence. Without it, he will still achieve it in 10 to 20 years. IIRC, Shirou was like 7th human being in history who achieved it (if it wasn`t retconned). Not because he is that good, but because he was insane from the start. Heroic Spirits and other beings are beyond human understanding, so among them using Reality Marbles is more common practice.
The reason Shirou is a fake is not because he learned this ideology from someone else, it’s because he never made it his own. In the VN this is clearer, but the reason Shirou wants to save people is because he wants to imitate the happiness Kiritsugu felt that day, he wishes to recreate that moment, and doesn’t allow himself to feel joy or fun doing anything else.
12:05 That part of soundtrack is called Excalibur. 13:16 And this is Emiya theme. It got over 20 remixes over the years and has it`s own version for pretty much every member of this strange family
9:45 just for comparison's sake, the VN fight was a tad more gritty and close, because Shirou actually cannot afford to let Gil think for a second because no matter how much faster he can shoot out his blades than Gil, Gil only needs a moment to overpower him and win. Also, Gil isn't bad at CQC. Matter of fact, he is pretty decent at it. The problem was that Shirou is pressuring him with relentless assaults from everywhere and was shutting down his Gates of Babylon faster than he can fire anything out of them while also getting close so Gil has to defend and try to attack at the same time.
6:40 Not mad, he is insane. I mean that`s one of key requirements for being able to use Reality Marble as human being (not needed for Servants and other beings).
I mean, insane is not really the right word. Insanity is still something that exists as part of Gaia's common sense. I get the meaning, but the right way to frame it would be, "alien mindset". Shirou thinks in a way to runs counter to common sense from Earth. It's not a mindset that can be copied by another human and can't ever be understood through the lens of a human.
It should be noted that servant containers are quite limited compared to the original heroes themselves. Especially when the heroes like Gilgamesh originate from the Age of Gods. And even as a servant Gilgamesh really, and I mean really held back even beyond not using his insta win trump card Ea. He had his armor, the chains of heaven which could have at least occupied Shirou, the billion other things in his Gates that aren't necessarily weapons, he could have jumped through his gates to other parts of th battlefield, used his Foresight, actually floated like a DBZ character, called upon the elements like fire, ice, etc. from his gates which Shirou cannot copy. Instead Gilgamesh wanted to fight Shirou one on one as fairly as possible to prove his own superiority. He is offended at Shirou the faker for many reasons 1. Namely being that as the Demigod who is meant to b the bridge between worlds and observes mankind even having ruled mankind in Babylonia for a time he admires mankind's finest achievments which Heroic Spirits and especially their weapons reflects meanwhile Shirou gets to copy these legends scot free with none of the work. 2. Shirou's ability copies his own treasures which is an affront to his kingliness, and 3. Shirou's abilities are a bit too similar to the one man he called his friend and equal which strikes a hard nerve for him. So yeah this fight definitely has some interesting complexity when considering the expanded lore of Fate pertaining to Gilgamesh.
I agree that Zero -> Unlimited Blade Works (and then the Heavens Feel movies) is the best watch order. Followed by Grand Order/Babylonia as that brings back more Zero/UBW characters.
@@nathanieljohnson5430 Yeah, but that's not the point. OP presented VN version as if he explicitly survived and everyone thought he was still alive, which was not the case.
There's always going to be a fight with the watch order when it comes to Anime adaptations, because basically none of them are "correct". And in my opinnion, out of all the released Fate anime series, this is the best way to experience it. Both Zero and UBW anime were designed to be watched in this order, and UBW anime assumes that you already know some of the basics on how things work (similar in the VN as you would have read/played through the Fate-route before being able to get into UBW). And as a Fate snob, the right way to "watch" it all would be to read the VN routes in order (Fate->UBW->Heaven's Feel) and then watch/read Zero. But I'd never demand someone else to invest that much time into all of it. Whatever you enjoy, is the right way to experience it.
Personally, I think if you are not going to read original Fate route of Fate/Stay Night visual novel (or at least watch 2006 Deen version of Fate/Stay Night, which for the most part covers this route), it's better to watch Fate/Zero before Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works. Because in Fate route, both Gilgamesh and Kirei are more prominent and expanded upon, which Unlimited Blade Works in some parts takes for granted, skimming their characterisation or even sidelining them. It is written with assumption you've seen previous route and know some things. Some of those things are covered by Fate/Zero, so it's probably closer to intended experience than watching it raw.
As for watch order thoughts the one that should always be last is the Heaven's Feel films, everything else is just kind of pick one and go from there...
IMO, you or doing Zero and then FSN routes (at least UBW and HF), or doing routes and then Zero. Putting Zero between UBW and HF is probably worst choice.
I guess there are a few things that change if you watch UBW first, which is how I did it. I don't think it's explicitly revealed who Saber is until quite late in UBW, whereas it's in episode 1 of Zero. This was something I already knew via osmosis, but I could see it being a surprise for some. You don't really know about Avalon, though I think the "Fate" route in the visual novel deals with that more as well. That Kotomine killed Rin's father is a good twist if you haven't seen Zero. Kiritsugu's personality and past is very shocking in Zero if you saw UBW first since you were first exposed to him as a kind father figure to Shirou. It might be different if I went into it with no expectation of what he was like. Sakura's past is also very unexpected and shocking. I'm sure there's much more I'm not thinking of. I don't think there's necessarily a wrong order, but I enjoyed my decision to watch UBW first. It's impossible to know, but I think either way is valid. I imagine (excluding the quality of the movies) the argument is like the Star Wars watch order debate. "I am your father" is like "well duh" if you saw the prequels first, for an obvious example. I'm currently reading the visual novel to get the "Fate" route, which is its own interesting experience, then I'll probably just watch Heaven's Feel instead of going through reading the rest of the VN. Despite being on the older end of anime watchers, I never gave this franchise a chance until the last year or so. I've really enjoyed my time with it, so I'm glad to see others experience and discuss it as well. Thanks for sharing your reactions!
