Randy Rhoads. The greatest guitarist to have ever walked the earth. Everytime a song Rhoads was on, it makes me get cold chills no matter how many times I hear it. And when it plays out in public around people that don't know what's being played or whose playing it, I look around and think about what they're missing, people not knowing who Randy is missing out on what music ACTUALLY is. Such incredible talent and skill and genius at such a short amount of time. God bless Randy Rhoads

Man, Sometimes I don't get it.
Llke how I could be blasting "S.A.T.O." I will look 4:42 around at guys I know that play, and I see nothing in their faces. Is it Me!???
The way the song flows in perfect pace with it's melodic tone, like a wave, or spiral, those two late pinch harmonics that
Imitate the last word in the verse....... It's shockingly beautiful.

      I read S.A.T.O.was Randy's favorite solo.
How could he pick a favorite?🤭
      They're ALL amazing.🤘

I was a student of Randy's many many years ago. In the first lesson I ever had with him he gave me a finger warm up that we would do before every session. That exercise was actually a version of the opening lick to Crazy Train. I guess he had it in his head for a while. I think a lot of the reason for the open hand technique you talked about, was that he had a super long pinky nail that he used to play classical guitar. Which was amazing. Randy was really into classical guitar and classical music. It's where the emphasis on minor scales comes from. Anyway, keep doing what you're doing, bro. He was all about teaching and I have a feeling, would be super stoked that you are sharing his techniques.

This is probably the most comprehensive collection of licks and embellishments I've seen for guitar players that have mastered their pentatonics and are trying to get to that next level. Nicely done! Would love to see a next-level version of this with some slightly more complex ideas.

Probably the third time I've watched this video, yes it's that good, and I noticed that with the "double tap" you used the pick to tap too. Welcome to the club bro. It has always been easier for me to kind of "bounce" the pick off the neck on that double tap.
On second thought, maybe you didn't use the edge of the pick. I do, and it works pretty well. Try it.

  • @jdram58
    @jdram58 5 ปีที่แล้ว

You know this is so much better then in my day I never considered myself a lead player cuz I started out rushing to learn songs for like a song list for a band n everything was a rush n I was fairly young n there were no teachers few books n the push was to learn more songs but what was confusing was trying leads from songs from several lead guitars like lynerd skynerd n Johnny Winters! I really only started to understand lead by the time we broke. N I started to find tab literature n also there were no or few post gain pre gain amps at that time so to get distortion u had to crank an amp n the push was bigger and louder amps. The other thing was everything was learned by ear as it was the only way to keep up and practice practice practice. But its good a lot of times now cuz I can pick up songs quickly. But also wat was hard was tuning for guitars from one song or album to the next which is often different. Known to benefit the singers n their voice ranges! Like Van Halen between David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar both had their qualities but Sammy was a screamer n much more versatile voice range. N if I find a good guitar player hell I'll put down my guitar n play bass as its much easier then guitar in many cases but there are challenging bass players as well as guitar players but you will find advantages switching from bass to guitar if u are learning as well! Its like taking a break when ur practicing or changing your focus when working on really difficult leads songs or music. N some times it is good to quit or think about something else play a video game take a break specially if ur frustrated or go watch another band play some where there was no step by step video when I was playing lots of WTF moments n practicing scales n chords over n over n few harmonic's players like van halen no books on lead guitar the books we had were primative! Id have to say "Johnny Winters and Live" was my inspiration to really start playing guitar n no it wasn't Hendrix sorry Johnny had his problems to but he played with other talented people Edgar Winter and Rick Deringer Billy Hobbs! N even Ted Nugents so called rythym guitarist I saw him smoke Ted several times in concert n wonder who the hell this guy was?

Unfortunately I suffered a stroke 2013 and completely lost my ability to play which I have been trying to re-acquire since,, but it’s way slower than when I initially started to learn and I still haven’t quite gotten there,, it is very frustrating.

There have been many tho gs said about Randy over the years but even with his education Ozzy was quoted as saying that when they got into a new town Randy would hire a guitar teacher in many towns all over the country, could be world but it was never specified but as many people noticed it would appear in the way he played that night depending what he was focusing on at any given time.. He never cared what people thought about his quest for knowledge and he was constantly seeking as much information as he could get from constantly learning guitar.. I also want to add that at the time that at the time of his death Ozzy searched for other guitarists to play the music as it was written and I am not going to mention names but if anyone remembers Night Ranger which wasn't Metal but he played as written u tilthe next guitarist was picked and Jake actually changed the was some of the songs were played live also but I guess it explains why he was dismissed after the Hampton VA concert after over stepping and playing Dee Live.. I like Jake for his originality on his Bark at the Moon but it was nice when Zakk was brought in bringing back Randy's live sound to the shows...
Never let the style of music another guitar player plays or is known for let you judge what to expect from another player atleast back in the 80's...
By the way very Informative but I would of like to have seen his Quiet Riot style also which he did change so they didn't sound the same, soloing was similar but Quiet Riot was his way of letting go with everything he had been learning..
Speaking of Styles Whitesnakes consistency in sound quality with many different guitarists over the years was incredible, Also Queensryche was the best Live band to perform and there style is very interesting and partof Metal history like Maiden and Priest and Van Halen.. Its funny to mention Van Halen because Eddie mentioned Randy's talent alot back in those days, he talks about Randy would have been the future of guitar playing of he didn't pass away so young..

All tricks every lead player should have in their arsenal..... and if you are a lead player you "must" learn all styles picking.. and playing fast should be one of your exercises because you will need that speed at some point......if your early in to the sport make a list of 10 or exercises for instants -- song writing--scales--singing and playing--making riffs--double bends--Ect...now the thing thats going to get you their fast...Do any riff that is very hard for you 40to60 times and count each one......Go for 60 if your just starting out...... the list will get you there faster along with extreme repetition.....Want and Will is the other 50% and once it gets a hold of you..... you might feel like you signed at the crossroads because you just can't get enough or let go.....A great lead player will never stop learning new riff's.....

No doubt the "afterbirth" solo in Mr. Crowley is IMHO the greatest lead in metal history. Almost 40 years later I STILL get chills hearing it. Ozzy pissed Randy off and he put down a transcendent response. Tony Iommi built the House of Metal but Randy kicked the door down.

    • @wjatube

Probably the best metal solo I've ever heard. I remember his iconic Cleveland show aired on WMMS in 1980 or 81 and it made me pickup my guitar and 40 years later I still tear up to the Crowley solo. Randy's legacy lives on in all of us.

@@voronOsphere One of the best. Maybe if there had been a guitarist between Randy and him he would have been appreciated more. I think his solos are almost as good technically, on par sound wise and some of his rhythm stuff like Bark at the Moon would have impressed Randy. The two certainly stand head and shoulders above Zakk musically. He might be able to play their stuff but not come up with something like that. He's great but Jake deserves at least half of his fame and money.
