James and Kirk simply mix together perfectly. You just can't separate them. James could have left since late 80s and made successful solo career. Or, he and Lars could have replaced Kirk with one, among thousands, deity-level lead guitarists out there. Why not? One can only guess. The fact is James and Kirk have been rocking for more than 3 decades, and still doing it together.

You forgot the 2 most important Hetfield techniques.. His powerchord, which he grabs with his pinky instead of his Ring finger. And his picking technique. He used 3 fingers to hold his pick, that's why he has that power behind his fast palmmutes.
Many guitarists use their pinkies to fret power chords. I used to use my ring finger until I noticed James and Kirk, as well as Jeff Hanneman of Slayer, using their pinkies. I think it allows the fretting hand to relax a little bit more, at least for me.
I've finally found the technique Kirk used in the "Fade to Black" and "One" solo that I liked but didn't previously know what it was called, which was the "Single String Scale Patterns". I'm really grateful, because it gave me a deeper understanding of the band, which was already deep by itself.

He wrote the song with his former band.... but when he brought it into Metallica, the song was reworked by him and James... so James added parts, Dave modified parts... etc.. the finished product was a collaboration. But yea that main riff was Dave. Also, the lyrics were completely rewritten by James. The original song was about sex... just like The Mechanix. Dave was obsessed with sex, I think. James really had no interest at all in writing about sex. It was a total cliche in rock and roll at the time.
It's weird to watch this video and the one about Megadeth techniques.. It feels like you're doing a tutorial on how I play, because back in the day I learned to play by playing Metallica and Megadeth. Now, 20 years later, I haven't actively listened to those bands for years, so it's weird to realize how nearly everything I play is still based around this stuff :)
Same here. I thought many of the things I saw from Metallica and Megadeth were basic (I'm not properly trained) and I just found out many were details very particular to these bands.
Dude, this is an incredible crash course!! Each little section you show is something any guitarist can focus on and spend weeks/months practicing until they move onto the next. I’m just getting back into guitar after about 10 years of not playing and I can’t wait to spend the next 10 practicing everything you so masterfully laid out. You’re an incredible teacher. These techniques can be so overwhelming especially when you see people just going full speed with it, but the way you approach each technique at the top and show us how to progress is such an incredible gift. I’ve been watching these for months, and today I had an epiphany while watching this for probably the 20th time.I’ve been using these little techniques out of these videos every single day, and I’ve been improving so much especially over this past year. You could read tabs, or watch tabs for songs you like (as a self taught guitarist) but you really break down and explain each and every little lick, and give us an opportunity to look and listen to it in a completely different way.. I’m 100% self taught(never had a single lesson anyway), and I’ve learned more from watching you than have from anyone in my whole life. Thank you brother.
Hell I was born in 89' which was about the end of their heyday but still I grew up listening to all of Metallica's old stuff around 97' thankfully because that same year I moved into the house n neighborhood I'm still at now...but before me and my family moved to San actual neighborhood I lived right off a main road and had no kids around me that was my age....but in 97' I met this boy who was like 6yrs older than me who lived just 2 houses down from me and he had an older brother which was older too and that's who I would hear Pantera, Metallica shit like that but the funny thing I remember from then was for the longest time i had no idea what the band members looked like I would just always hear their music being played but yea 97' was around their "Load & Reload days" lol I remember us listening to those albums too and I remember thinking Mann have they changed!! Because I was thinking it sounded more bluesy and just rock n roll but at the that time I did enjoy "Until it Sleeps & King Nothing" but yea I got into Metallica at a younger age but it was already after their best albums had passed from their Black Album and back to Kill Em' All but to me those albums were fresh and new lol
I'm glad this video exists! Metallica get a lot of shit for their playing, and agreed, they're not in their prime anymore. But this video probably proves how technically tight Metallica is (at least for its own time and genre) than a lot of other "Metal" bands.

Jump In The Fire is still a Metallica song although Dave wrote every single note of the song, guys. He wrote the intro riff when he was 15, and played that riff while jamming with his old band 'Panic'. It was when he brought that complete song to Lars and James, wrote the solo and released it on 'No Life Till Leather' that it even became a thing tho. Anyways, most of the Metallica's badass techniques come from James and Mustaine, as Kirk's technique is not as wah-nderful. Most of the pentatonic patterns that he runs through have been Dave's signature on Kill Em All and still remain his favorite, go-to pattern. In fact, Dave's influence is pretty prevalent on a good quarter of the techniques.
Kirk made atonal and diminished double stops (inflected with or without wah effects) a thing in Thrash lead playing, yet he doesn't get credit for that. Metallica's guitar style around RTL-TBA is due to Kirk, not James - as Hetfield can't go one song without being in the key of E Minor. Hammett has had to get him to even try solos and leads the way he does it (The harmony section at the end of "One" is his idea and you can still, melodically). He meanwhile has to try other keys and modulations just to add something to Jame's obsession in that key. And your dumbass forgot he frequently used modes on those 4 albums, and yet you think Mustaine's bland ass, run of the mill "shred chromatically with no harmonization to the guitar riffs/chords" excuse you call better lead playing is better? Mfw, Mustaine couldn't even do Kirk's more creative, or technically cleaner solos with interesting phrasing in their prime.
@Теодор Митев You know, coming back to this now, I actually would like to reveal my opinion about Hammett, which is, that he was a very good heavy metal lead guitarist during his heyday and had a good ear for melody that he showed through a lot of his solos. He might be sloppy live, and gotten lesser creative with time, but he did contribute a good chunk of Metallica's music ( incredible riffs on Battery, Disposable Heroes, Damage Inc, the fantastic bridge on Creeping Death, the iconic intro to Sandman etc.). I also believe he brought more interesting melodic ideas to table than Hetfield, considering that he was always better trained musically, but the casuals think Hetfield is the better guitarist just because he down-picks like a machine.
As a guitarist of 15 years who ztudimdied and learned for 'Tallica and 'Tera....nothing burns my ass more than when other guitarists say Dime played this or that in Drop D, when its clearly D standard...whole guitar tuned down, not just the big un...

Never had a single lesson, just bought a guitar and started figuring things out on my own. I started out playing KISS, Detroit Rock City being the first song I learned all the way through with the lead, and moved on to Metallica (one of my favorites) and found that the speed of Kirks lead was just too intimidating but that James' rhythms were my speed. It was good for a long time but lately I've been frustrated at the fact that I've been playing on the same general level for at least ten years. Seeing you break down the techniques used in Kirks leads makes me see it's nothing I haven't done already but just a bit faster or in some cases that it's not as complicated as I initially thought. Great to break the monotony and start making progress again. Between your channel and the bits of music theory I've been trying to learn lately my playing has improved drastically.
My guitar history mirror's yours. Born in 72' I was a huge KISS fan as a kid. After I started playing guitar in high school a friend had me listen to KILL Em All. Learning Metallica songs in the beginning really help my rhythm playing.
Master is one of my down picking warmups to loosen up the wrists. Definitely recommend playing that beginning riff over and over. Really improves hand stamina.
"The 'One' video was out at the time and it freaked me out." Yeah. I still think Jonny Got His Gun, in my humble opinion, is the scariest movie ever made. For anyone who hasn't seen it it's free on TH-cam and I can't think of a single movie more worthy of a remake.
Have you seen the movie Trumbo with Bryan Cranston? Pretty sure it was an HBO original. It's not about Johnny Got His Gun, but it's about Dalton Trumbo, the author of the book. It's very interesting and Cranston does a great job in it.
I started playing guitar with Metallica (RIP, KUFO). That is, literally, how I learned to play guitar. There's nothing I was unfamiliar with, but, I enjoyed the hell out of it.

The sad Truth is when metallica was recording kill em all Kirk had a Marshall modified especially for him, we metalers Will never hear that guitar sound ever again it had that classic crunchy guitar sound captured on 1st l.p it got stolen, Kirk called it "magical mythical Marshall) out there collecting dust. 💔😠😠😠😠
+Eric Ridley It was Kirk who actually played on the studio version of 'Kill Em All', Dave was booted right before the LP was recorded in NYC. Although he was basically asked to play Dave's stuff as they were 'just like Dave'.
Eric Ridley dave got kicked out a month before recording. Kirk got let in and had four weeks to change the solos (a little bit) and he had about a week to learn all their songs before their first gig together.

Even though jump into fire is basically running up and down the blues scale, it's so catchy and fun to play. Not one of my liked Metallica songs, but off that album, another Dave riff was my favorite, the four horsemen. Also, Kirk wrote the die riff in creeping death when he was 16 too.
Yes you're correct. One of Metallica' s finest songs. I will always prefer megadeth, but kirk is the better metallica guitarist and also the better lead player in general, but Dave has a less sloppy and clean style, which is to be expected...I mean...it's dave. He's the "perfectionist" of the thrash genre. But Kirks sloppiness is part of his style, it makes him as good as he is. Not the wah, etc. It's his sloppiness. A lot of people complain about that part of his technique. Take it away and see what you get. But yes. Imo, Kirk is a better solo writer and riff writer, but dave is a more refined and tight guitarist, AND he is ever so slightly faster. To be honest. The advantages these guitarists have over each other doesn't put them ahead of one another. I believe dave is ever so slightly better though because of how much more refined he is, but I will always like kirk better as the metallica guitarist, simply due to his riffs evolving into late 80's and early 90's metallica. But yes. Megadeth > metallica. But kirk > dave as a metallica guitarist.

I know Kirk Hammett is like the butt of all guitar internet jokes now however you can't deny that the solos that are composed for many of his songs are irreplaceable. At least I can't imagine their being better solos for many of his songs such as fade to Black for example... They just seem Perfectly composed for the actual situation.

Today I beat my biggest fear as a guitarist thanks to you. I tought being a Metallica head was wrong and I was kinda ashamed of it as a guitaris. I almost know all of their songs and can play them very well but was shy to play it because it is kinda all I know atm. I have been playing for 1 year and I tought acomplishing to play Master of Puppets was pretty basic, but maybe its not as you said it is a pretty hard song and you are an amazing guitar player. But as I see it there is nothing wrong with learning lots of songs from a band as I can see you did spent lots of time learning lots of songs from Metallica. As time passes I hope I learn new stuff from other bands(I know lots of songs from different bands but not as near as Metallica) and I am going to deffinitley learn their solos too now that I can see there is people out there that love playing Metallica

He meanwhile has to try other keys and modulations just to add something to Jame's obsession in that key.
And your dumbass forgot he frequently used modes on those 4 albums, and yet you think Mustaine's bland ass, run of the mill "shred chromatically with no harmonization to the guitar riffs/chords" excuse you call better lead playing is better? Mfw, Mustaine couldn't even do Kirk's more creative, or technically cleaner solos with interesting phrasing in their prime.
@Теодор Митев You know, coming back to this now, I actually would like to reveal my opinion about Hammett, which is, that he was a very good heavy metal lead guitarist during his heyday and had a good ear for melody that he showed through a lot of his solos. He might be sloppy live, and gotten lesser creative with time, but he did contribute a good chunk of Metallica's music ( incredible riffs on Battery, Disposable Heroes, Damage Inc, the fantastic bridge on Creeping Death, the iconic intro to Sandman etc.). I also believe he brought more interesting melodic ideas to table than Hetfield, considering that he was always better trained musically, but the casuals think Hetfield is the better guitarist just because he down-picks like a machine.

You have seriously saved my life with that picking technique on #1. My buddy and I are wanting to learn Hardwired, but I do the lead so I am trying to work on the solo. Now that I have seen how you pick, I will work on that!

Mate your knowledge of Metallica (and many others) is crazy! I've been playing for a long time and you just cement a whole lot of things together in one lesson ... I have so many new techniques to work on!! Keep up the good work ... I'm trying to turn all my guitar geek friends on to your channel.
Never had a single lesson, just bought a guitar and started figuring things out on my own. I started out playing KISS, Detroit Rock City being the first song I learned all the way through with the lead, and moved on to Metallica (one of my favorites) and found that the speed of Kirks lead was just too intimidating but that James' rhythms were my speed. It was good for a long time but lately I've been frustrated at the fact that I've been playing on the same general level for at least ten years. Seeing you break down the techniques used in Kirks leads makes me see it's nothing I haven't done already but just a bit faster or in some cases that it's not as complicated as I initially thought. Great to break the monotony and start making progress again. Between your channel and the bits of music theory I've been trying to learn lately my playing has improved drastically.
My guitar history mirror's yours. Born in 72' I was a huge KISS fan as a kid. After I started playing guitar in high school a friend had me listen to KILL Em All. Learning Metallica songs in the beginning really help my rhythm playing.
Master is one of my down picking warmups to loosen up the wrists. Definitely recommend playing that beginning riff over and over. Really improves hand stamina.

Have you seen the movie Trumbo with Bryan Cranston? Pretty sure it was an HBO original. It's not about Johnny Got His Gun, but it's about Dalton Trumbo, the author of the book. It's very interesting and Cranston does a great job in it.

I started playing guitar with Metallica (RIP, KUFO). That is, literally, how I learned to play guitar. There's nothing I was unfamiliar with, but, I enjoyed the hell out of it.

Anyways, i also grew up on Metallica. Im like the Metallica King among my friends, and i have to say that you are a GREAT teacher. Just the way you talk and explain. I actually learned some things that i never knew, not only on some Metallica songs but also on techniques. And also, like Michael B's comment, Ive also been in kind of a slump or whatever you want to call it but now i cant wait to try out a few of these things. The sad Truth is when metallica was recording kill em all Kirk had a Marshall modified especially for him, we metalers Will never hear that guitar sound ever again it had that classic crunchy guitar sound captured on 1st l.p it got stolen, Kirk called it "magical mythical Marshall) out there collecting dust. 💔😠😠😠😠

It was Kirk who actually played on the studio version of 'Kill Em All', Dave was booted right before the LP was recorded in NYC.

Eric Ridley dave got kicked out a month before recording. Kirk got let in and had four weeks to change the solos (a little bit) and he had about a week to learn all their songs before their first gig together.

Even though jump into fire is basically running up and down the blues scale, it's so catchy and fun to play. Not one of my liked Metallica songs, but off that album, another Dave riff was my favorite, the four horsemen.
Also, Kirk wrote the die riff in creeping death when he was 16 too.
Yes you're correct. One of Metallica' s finest songs. I will always prefer megadeth, but kirk is the better metallica guitarist and also the better lead player in general, but Dave has a less sloppy and clean style, which is to be expected...I mean...it's dave. He's the "perfectionist" of the thrash genre. But Kirks sloppiness is part of his style, it makes him as good as he is. Not the wah, etc. It's his sloppiness. A lot of people complain about that part of his technique. Take it away and see what you get. But yes. Imo, Kirk is a better solo writer and riff writer, but dave is a more refined and tight guitarist, AND he is ever so slightly faster. To be honest. The advantages these guitarists have over each other doesn't put them ahead of one another. I believe dave is ever so slightly better though because of how much more refined he is, but I will always like kirk better as the metallica guitarist, simply due to his riffs evolving into late 80's and early 90's metallica. But yes. Megadeth > metallica. But kirk > dave as a metallica guitarist.

I know Kirk Hammett is like the butt of all guitar internet jokes now however you can't deny that the solos that are composed for many of his songs are irreplaceable. At least I can't imagine their being better solos for many of his songs such as fade to Black for example... They just seem Perfectly composed for the actual situation.
Yea their perfect to be honest. And when you find out which riffs Kirk actually wrote sometimes their the best part of the song haha

Today I beat my biggest fear as a guitarist thanks to you. I tought being a Metallica head was wrong and I was kinda ashamed of it as a guitaris. I almost know all of their songs and can play them very well but was shy to play it because it is kinda all I know atm. I have been playing for 1 year and I tought acomplishing to play Master of Puppets was pretty basic, but maybe its not as you said it is a pretty hard song and you are an amazing guitar player. But as I see it there is nothing wrong with learning lots of songs from a band as I can see you did spent lots of time learning lots of songs from Metallica. As time passes I hope I learn new stuff from other bands(I know lots of songs from different bands but not as near as Metallica) and I am going to deffinitley learn their solos too now that I can see there is people out there that love playing Metallica
