Wow!!! You are a colour mixing genius! Who would have thought that a tiny amount of red and a LOT of dark blue mixed together would actually create a big embarrassing mess on your palette! Brilliant. You learn something new every day.

I saw the Northern Lights in the August over Lake Superior. They were so exciting. I could hardly contain my praise remarks for the "show" God designed in our evening skies. Just discovered you on Pinterest and am so glad I did. Now I can paint what I saw that evening, a desire of my heart. Love your show and the fact that you remind me of Bob Ross is a joy.
love this lesson, I am an acrylic painter but will give this ago and see how it turns out... thank you for taking the time to share your amazing talent with us all..cheers Mel..
+reikibee Awesome! I have heard there is a slow drying additive that will let this work well for acrylics too. I want to try painting with acrylics sometimes. I have only used them to color some anime characters in.
I love it back in 1988 I actually thought about that very same idea but what I did is built myself an actual bang box is what I call it and it's just for beating your brush up against a wooden dowel that's inside a wooden box that I had sealed with silicone on the corners inside and out interesting that you had that idea as well
It works great, but I recently switched to a brush beater rack since I can put it in a bag. Much less mess to clean up! I couldn't find any back when I made my trash can one!
I am just starting to paint. I really enjoyed your techniques and money saving idea's while I experiment and learn. It can be really expensive to make mistakes and start over many times. LOL Thank you! I've always watched Bob Ross but you are my next pick now. Thanks!!! :)
So glad you shared how to clean brushes I just started painting a year or so always having to buy cheap brushes cause I didnt know how to clean them really enjoyed watching you paint you made it look so easy.

Thank you for your lesson. It was calming and easy to learn and follow. Like your calm style and your relaxing way to teach. It makes me feel like I can do this. I use acrylics, so I hope that it works too. I will use a slow dry medium to hell.

Just subscribed! I, too, am just starting to paint and am about to attempt a black gesso canvas painting inspired by Bob Ross. You explained the process very well and I think you answered one of my questions of how to apply the background paint that will appear when you use titanium white on top.... You have to use a thin layer and maybe mix the oil paint with a little thinner or liquid clear? I tried doing it with just the oil and it was really hard to spread and I ended up using too much paint. Quick question.... Do you think.... Using the process of applying color to the black gesso.... That the painting needs to be completed in one sitting? Or can I work on it and come back the next day to finish? I didn't know if you would still be able to get the same effect? Would love your expertise! Look forward to watching more videos to get inspired. Thanks for sharing!
I think that it will be okay for a day or two, but it would probably be better to finish at least the sky and reflections all at once. You can come back over with the rest of the stuff any time. If you ever have any questions, let me know. I'd love to help any way I can!
+yasmin ghaisani I may do that sometime, but have to keep them this length because they air on television. I would like to find ways to make shorter ones though. Of course I'd rather keep it long if it helps explain things to people better.
I don't have one made. I should make a picture list for the Facebook page though. Besides the obvious things like brushes and canvas, I use all oil paints, liquid white, odorless paint thinner, and very rarely, linseed oil. thanks for watching. it really means a lot to me.
The method I use for painting stars is a little simpler and gives me better control. I dip the tip of a toothpick in liquid white. Then place my stars exactly where I want them. As the toothpick starts running out of paint the stars get smaller and dimmer. This to me gives depth beyond the northern lights.
Lol! I love the brush beater rack... I made mine the exact same way! Duct tape and everything!.. I just cut the extra off so it doesn't stick out so far.. And I thought I was the only one with such a clever (and shamelessly budget) idea!
Going to try this now will show you a pic if it looks good, I've got acrylics so might not come out as well as yours as I don't have the clear liquid colours
"It's ok to make mistakes, as long as you learn from them." *looks at painting quietly* "I feel like I've learned a lot from this painting." I think the painting is lovely, but this had me cracking up. Is the Salem Painter secretly Zach Galafianakis?
I know you're using oil, but could you use the beginning technique with acrylics? Meaning could you layer a translucent colour over black, lay down white, and blend them together, or does it ony work with oil paint?
another question, (as I mentioned, im a new painter & there is still a LOT I do not know ). I just looked up transparent paint and am not sure which type to use for this. There is "Acrylic Transparent," and transparent paints for glass. Also transparent paints for airbrushing :(
This is a great tutorial! Can I ask what kind of oil to add to the colors to make them transparent like that? Did I hear you say it was paint thinner? Thanks so much, I'm so excited to try this!
Most oil colors that I use are already transparent. it differs slightly by brand, but you can usually check the manufacturers website or the pamphlets at stores.
Can you please write down name of the colour you use,i dont hear all names, only titanium white and Sap green.a very nice pictures,I lived in norway with the northern lights 😀
Is this done with oil paint? I'm trying to make a painting similar to this. So paint the canvas black, and use paint thinner with oil paint? I'd appreciate any advice, thank you!
@@TheSalemPainter Thanks. I seem to be making mud the moment I try to blend. I've taken to tapping the paint, dabbing it with a paper towel to get the blend effect I want. MacGyver 😁
Hey Salem, I have been trying this technique of putting transparent paint on the black canvas, but doesn't seem to work for me. Can you please tell me if i can use acrylic paint for the above. And how to make acrylic paint transparent ? Is the white paint used, neat ? Please let me know as i am unable to get the smudge effect (the northern light effect) Thanks.
It doesn't work with acrylic paints. These are all oils. There are some awesome effects you can do with acrylics, but it is not easy to blend on the canvas with them.
Hey, so I'm thinking about painting this for my friends birthday but I'm pretty sure I don't have the right paints. What were the colors you used again (including the type of black paint)? And correct me if I'm wrong, but you used oil to mix with the colors so ther transparent against the black, correct?
The black paint is an acrylic paint that is just used to coat and color canvas. The rest are all oil colors. it is important to note that you can paint oils over dried acrylics or acrylic gessos, but you can't put acrylic over oil. the colors are sap green, alizarin crimson, and Prussian blue. Any color that is transparent will work great. I have had some me success experimenting with opaque colors in the sky too by adding them where the white would go. Thanks for watching!
It might be possible if you mixed each color in the sky separately. if you tried it this way, it would dry too quickly. There are additives you can buy that will skew the dry time of acrylics. That might help, but usually acrylics are not transparent. I hope that helps!
so when you say the colours are transparent, is that just because it is lightly painted onto black? or was something done with the paint to make it transparent?
Oil colors are either transparent or opaque. It usually says on the manufacturers website which colors are. There will often be a display in the store showing which ones are. I chose colors that typically are in every brand, but it can vary.
The black base coat is dried acrylic. I'm still learning myself though. I have heard that black gesso will give you a better painting surface. The regular paint has worked fine for me though. I suspect spray paint would work fine too. Thanks for watching the show! I hope this helps.
I didn't use either for this painting. the wet paint I applied serves the same purpose. If you are using a white canvas, try white paint mixed with thinner instead!
My 9 year old daughter and I have seen this video and want to tell you that you are very talented. We know nothing about painting but have bought some acrylic paint, brushes, easel and a few other things. We have the canvas painted black. We tried yesterday to paint a little purple onto the canvas and learned that we must be missing something. We watched your video again and saw that you said you used thinner so went to Hobby Lobby today and bought some thinner (not sure if its what we needed, the girl working there did not know any more than we did, we bought "artisan water mixable oil" thinner. Is this what we needed? We tried to put some thinner beside the paint and pulled a little into it and mixed it with the brush. When we put it on the canvas we could see the color which is not correct right? I think we have the wrong paint or the wrong thinner or both. Can you help us reset our process? My daughter is really showing a lot of interest and to be honest I'm curious to learn too. We would like to see success in this beyond being able to paint the canvas black ( we have done that several times now) thanks for the video and keep up the great work!
I'm glad you enjoy the show. I believe I can help. the problem is that you are using acrylic paints. This was all done using oil paints. The oil paints are mostly transparent, so when input the solid white on, they show up brightly. There are a lot of amazing things that can be done with acrylics too though. I don't think one medium is better than the other, but it is a different process.
+The Salem Painter Also, I do use acrylics to paint the canvas black. Oils can be painted on dried acrylic paint, but acrylics can't be painted on oils. it will end up cracking and coming off.
+The Salem Painter . . . We will try with some oil paint and I'll be sure to check to see if they are transparent. thank you for your feed back and prompt reply.
+TechTheRedneck if you have any questions, feel free to ask. I will try to answer as soon as I see it. the transparent colors I recommend for this are alizarin crimson, sap green, pthalo blue, and Prussian blue. More colors are transparent. you can check the paint manufacturers' websites for charts that will tell you about the others.
new painter here.....I read the comments because it didnt work for me. I use acrylic. I read an answer to one question that said, the colors are oil, the black that covers everything (whole canvas) is acrylic.....but also says you can put oils on acrylic but you can't put acrylic on oils. Im confused. Im still determined to finish this please help by explaining a bit more to this new painter.
sorry for the late reply! it got buried in TH-cam notifications. you can paint oils on top of dried acrylic paint, but you can't paint acrylic onto oils. it will peel off even if the oil is dry.
I just use oil paints. You can use linseed oil to thin those out, but I mostly just use the paints themselves and a medium like liquid white/magic white. Thanks for watching. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Please, may you explain me how your white color turned diffrent color?? i TRIED so many times to paint this aurora and I must do some mistake. Please, could you help me?? Or tell me your secret ;) Thanks!
Eibhlin Kubit I was under the understanding that it was all acrylic paints being used also. I just tried this project and of course.....did NOT work. Im a new painter and just looked up transparent paint, it says make it using acrylic paint by adding water?
This is pretty cool! I was trying to figure out how to do the aurora borealis, so this helped out a lot! What kind of paints and what other materials did you use for this?
I used Dealer Rowney Georgian paints. they are thick enough to work well for the technique and are quite cheap when you buy the large tubes. I have different types of natural bristle brushes. I use either odorless paint thinner or mineral spirits. They both clean the brushes well.

+The Salem Painter Wow this will really help, thank you ^^. I've been trying to do a painting of the northern lights on what I think is maybe a 12'x9'-10' canvas and so far... it's uh not going well. But this video really helped out a lot because now I know what to do. I'm a bit of an amateur and haven't painted in a while.
these oil colors that I used are transparent. you have to check the manufacturers documentation to see which oil paints are transparent. I hope that helps!
Thank you so much for this tutorial sir! this is amazing, but, are you using acrilic or oil? and.. can you tell me the size of your pencils? i am learning so much watching your video :)
Thanks for watching. I use a two inch brush, a one inch, a number 6 fan brush, and a palette knife. It is oil paints, but the canvas is painted black with acrylic paints.
I usually don't have someone running the camera fore, so it can be hard to show that. I am just using a small corner of the fan brush and pressing harder as I go down the tree an. using more of the surface area of the brush.
ok I realize this is a painting you did in 2015 I can't figure out are you using oil paints or acrylic paints? If it is oil paints can you achieve the same results using acrylic paints?
It is oil paints. I have people ask me if they can do this with acrylics and it seems like it would be hard to do, but I keep hearing about an additive you can get for acrylics. i don't know what it is called, but maybe that will help in your search. I think it has something to do with slow-drying.
To get brown, from your purple, you need to add yellow to make it gray first, and then you need to add a warm red, not a cool red like alizarin.. Alternatively you can buy burnt umber which is a natural brown.
I want to paint this for my mom. She wants to see the northern lights before she dies, but in her condition I fear she doesn't have much time or strength to do so.
Thanks for showing your Artworks and teaching at the same time...

I just looked up transparent paint and am not sure which type to use for this. There is "Acrylic Transparent," and transparent paints for glass. Also transparent paints for airbrushing :(
These are oil paints. Most oil paints are at least somewhat transparent. Check the manufacturers websites for more information.

All i have are acrylic paints, so would I get the same effect with the colors for the lights? 1st timer here, so I'm clueless 🙈

it is oil paint. only the black is acrylic. you can just use the paint directly on the canvas. no thinner needed. it slides on the wet under colors.
Great work
+Colton Narron Thanks for watching! I replied to your email. I hope to hear from you again soon. I already have an idea in mind.
How wet is your transparent color layer? How thin is the white you put over?

The black base coat is dried acrylic. I'm still learning myself though. I have heard that black gesso will give you a better painting surface. The regular paint has worked fine for me though. I suspect spray paint would work fine too. Thanks for watching the show! I hope this helps.
❤
i don't have liquid clear or liquid white. do you have to use them or is it optional?
I didn't use either for this painting. the wet paint I applied serves the same purpose. If you are using a white canvas, try white paint mixed with thinner instead!
I just love this so much 😭
Dark Zero I'm glad you like it!
The Salem Painter
And you're adorable master Richard ❤❤ a real pleasure to watch you and your art work.
question! can i use water if i dont got oil to mix with the acrilic for the lights?
There is no acrylic. These are actually oil based paints. No water should be used at all.
super ! merci pour votre leçon !
thanks!
thank you so much I very like it.
thank you for watching!
Im still determined to finish this please help by explaining a bit more to this new painter.
sorry for the late reply! it got buried in TH-cam notifications. you can paint oils on top of dried acrylic paint, but you can't paint acrylic onto oils. it will peel off even if the oil is dry.
what kind of brushes do you use?? and where can I find them??
I use natural bristle brushes. I actually have the Bob Ross brand 2 inch, but you can get them at art and hardware stores.
thank you so much .... love watching you paint! Some others just talk way too much lol - I want instruction not chit chat ;)
Can the northern lights be air brushed?
I bet they probably could. That's not the same as what I do though!
what "oil" did you add to your colors? Sorry I'm very new...
Of course I use acrylic :)
I have transparent paint on the canvas. I don't think that acrylics will work for this.
What about Bob Ross, doesn't he use acrylic when he shows his episodes with northern lights??
no. the only acrylic paint is the black gesso that he uses to paint the canvas black. I also use acrylic for that part.
Eibhlin Kubit I was under the understanding that it was all acrylic paints being used also. I just tried this project and of course.....did NOT work. Im a new painter and just looked up transparent paint, it says make it using acrylic paint by adding water?
Absolut genial und sehr schön
danke!
You have such an easy way, just like Bob Ross, keep up the good work and you may wind up on PBS. You're quite good 5*****
thanks! I've had a lot more practice now.
5:20 why titanium white and not liquid?
Liquid white would just run down the canvas. Maybe you could use it if it is thick enough!
Can the same effect be made on plastic?
I think that plastic might work if it is sanded down to make it rough first.

Got down on this one!
what do you use to make the colors transparent?
these oil colors that I used are transparent. you have to check the manufacturers documentation to see which oil paints are transparent. I hope that helps!
The Salem Painter thank you!
Thank you so much for this tutorial sir! this is amazing, but, are you using acrilic or oil? and.. can you tell me the size of your pencils? i am learning so much watching your video :)
was curious of the same and looked at the comments below. he used acrylic for the black canvas and oil for the rest
Thanks for watching. I use a two inch brush, a one inch, a number 6 fan brush, and a palette knife. It is oil paints, but the canvas is painted black with acrylic paints.
Do I see any yellow in your northern lights? Bottom left? Or is it my screen?
It is just green, but it can look a little yellow. I like to use yellow by the horizon sometimes.
@@TheSalemPainter what is a good transparent yellow? Thanks
#AskSalem can you do a closeup video of how you make these tree?...I am still confused
I usually don't have someone running the camera fore, so it can be hard to show that. I am just using a small corner of the fan brush and pressing harder as I go down the tree an. using more of the surface area of the brush.
Thanks for the reply, now I get it! :)
ok I realize this is a painting you did in 2015 I can't figure out are you using oil paints or acrylic paints? If it is oil paints can you achieve the same results using acrylic paints?
It is oil paints. I have people ask me if they can do this with acrylics and it seems like it would be hard to do, but I keep hearing about an additive you can get for acrylics. i don't know what it is called, but maybe that will help in your search. I think it has something to do with slow-drying.
To get brown, from your purple, you need to add yellow to make it gray first, and then you need to add a warm red, not a cool red like alizarin.. Alternatively you can buy burnt umber which is a natural brown.
I like van dyke brown. it is really dark. sometimes I will mix crimson and green to get a nice brown too!
what kind of color are you using?? are they acrylic??
no. they are all oils paints. the oy acrylic used was to paint the canvas black.
ohhhh okay that explain a lot. thank you for the fast reply. and this is an amazing video, keep it going.
Can water based paint be used?
Not for this technique, but I am sure you can find a way.
I have been trying to do this painting but I dont know how to make the paint transparent can anyone help me
Some colors are transparent and it will say on the manufacturers website. It only works with oil paints.
I want to paint this for my mom. She wants to see the northern lights before she dies, but in her condition I fear she doesn't have much time or strength to do so.
let me know if you have any questions. I'm sure she will love it.
And...here is your new subscriber!!
