Very nice. The fittings... the paint and the flooring... all reminded me of my old Navy boat. USS Kilauea. Ae-26. Shasta class ammo ship out of the Bay Area. Commissioned 1967. Vietnam service and beyond. We gave it to the Australians for torpedo practice eventually. Saw my old boat sunk on the net. Just found your channel. Excellent.

My father was a Merchant Marine who served aboard the Liberty Ship 'SS Ethelbert Nevin', as an Oiler during WWII. He told me stories of the convoys that transported much needed supplies across the Atlantic, and why you hoped your ship wasn't on the outside of those great convoy groups. He lost many friends during the course of the war.

Hope you got to tour my hometown, San Pedro after your tour of the Lane Victory! A lot of awesome history around there. Thanks for sharing!

I did one of those voyages a long time ago (late 90's? Early 00's?). They did a mock battle with WW2 planes and everything over the channel. VERY memorable experience, was an amazing day.
I thought they weren't going to do them anymore at all, great to hear they are trying to start them up again!

Same here, my wife and I went... Twice I think. We both loved it. As far as I know the boiler was dismantled for repairs in 2012 and still isn't repaired as of late 2024. I found this video trying to see if they've made any progress.

If you drive past Omaha, Nebraska, you should check out the wreck of the Steamboat Bertrand that sank in the Missouri River in 1865. The mud preserved the cargo and they have a pretty remarkable museum there.

Thank you very much for your hard work on your channel. My wife ( she has been gone for 12 years ) ate lunch on the deck of SS Lane Victory an got a tour of the ship. I remember the engine use in the move ( The Sand Pebbles ).

Victory ships I believe were constructed in Richardson Bay Marin shipyard. In 1975 my merchant marine father managed to supply me at the age of 16 a Z- card through the SUP in San Francisco. I shipped out that summer from pier 38 on the embarcadero to Guam on a victory ship. It was a WWll (T-1Tanker) converted to a commercial Container ship owned by Matson Shipping. I remembered my dad driving me down to the ship that morning my seabag in hand not a clue to what I was about to do. My high-school friend accompanied me and my dad to see what it was about. We both looked at each other and said holy ship. This ship was held together with Red Lead paint and twine. She had seen better days full of rust and broken railings. We actually traveled some 5000 nothical miles west across the most powerful ocean with a constant 30° list starboard to port. The engineers had to continuously pump the bilge out while trying to keep the bulk cargo level. Five days out at sea from our Port in Guam we entered a Typhoon for three days the sky was black with winds in the mid 80's to over 100 miles hr seas 60+ft the ship didn't move it just remained in the trough rocking back and forth. When we finally arrived in Port we had lost 12 huge Shipping containers a schoolbus. A few of the containers were actually hanging over the side while docking. It was a mess. The ship was converted from a fuel tanker to allow containers to ride in the holes and up on deck between the forward house and the house aft. This weakened the hull so as well as a constant list we also had a trembling vibration. It was cool to revisit the mess hall gally in you're video. The name of my ship was the SS TRANSINIDA crewed by the sailors union of the pacific S.U.P.

We met in the chat of this live stream when it was live. We talked about his name and where he got it. I asked if it was from the famous plane act, he said it’s from the thing you smoke. He then told me that devils lettuce is cheaper than cigs in Canada and you can even buy it at the beer store?! BRUH

Looks like Tom's on his way towards developing a dad bod, but honestly, even with the burgeoning paunch--he's still smoking hot.

Tom, as you head north, try going to Aptos (Rio del Mar), the old concrete “Palo Alto” ww2 era vessel has been deteriorating there at the beach for years

Another live I missed, I suspect it's due to time difference. Most annoying, maybe if you give prior warning with a reminder option I may get to share the experience with everyone else.
