    Jeremiah O’Brien
Our new Naval Legends episode is dedicated to Jeremiah O'Brien, a U.S. Liberty-class transport ship. She was involved in the famous operations off the coasts of Normandy and Okinawa. The ship is currently based in San Francisco, where she is continuing her service as a living museum. She even sails around the bay from time to time.
The scale of manufacturing the Liberty ships was absolutely massive. In our video, you'll learn the origins of the ship's name and project's history, which has its design roots in numerous shipyards across the United States. We'll tell you about the modularization system, steam engine, and principles of construction. We'll also visit the boiler room and discuss the technical characteristics of Jeremiah O'Brien.

Jeremiah is definitely a survivor. Her usual mooring place, Pier 45, went up in a 4-alarm fire in the early morning in 2020, with her and the submarine USS Pampanito still alongside. Fires were burning high and furiously right next to Jeremiah, and thanks to the efforts of the SFFD, Jeremiah was spared with minimal damage. Pampanito too was unharmed if you're wondering.
Her sailing abilities are nothing to scoff at either. Jeremiah is the only large ship of the D-Day Armada to come back to Normandy on the 50th anniversary in 1994, sailing SF to France and back under her own power.
Side note, I had the pleasure of visiting her once, and the 3 inch gun on the bow was able to be rotated and elevated with limitations. Don't know if it was allowed to play with it, didn't see no sign, if there was one. After a while I left the gun pointed roughly to my sister's high school.

I'll never forget the time my grandfather and I toured the O' Brien, and one of the staff got to talking with my grandpa about their experiences in the armed forces. He eventually offered to show us the off-limits space in one of the upper holds which they've turned into a machine shop. They were restoring a 20mm gun, and they had a big yellow generator which we were told had apparently been taken from the nearby Alcatraz Island. We also saw a plastic skeleton someone put in one of the giant lower holds, and I got to aim the bow gun at various buildings in San Francisco.
Easily the coolest part of the ship to me though was the functional engine. It's a marvel of engineering, and the fact that these things were built very cheap and very quickly yet this one is in near-perfect condition speaks to the quality of the people who built it.

Jingles said it best in an older video of his,he was talking about Japans attack on Pearl Harbor and the ship building capacity of the US and Japan,he said "Japan, what the hell were you thinking?"
And thats exactly right, even Yamamato said basically the same thing, they could never hope to build a fleet as fast as the US,absolutely insane how fast these and other massive ships were put out,and these are fantastic videos

So wonderful to stumble across this. I had the honor of touring this ship in 1994 in Portsmouth England at the D-Day plus 50 ceremonies. I was crew on the USS George Washington and drove small boats between the J. O'brien, the Brittania and our ship at anchorage. I have amazing memories of that week. Thanks for stirring them up!

Excellent video on an amazing ship. I was honored to be a member of the Unicorns Dance Band which for more than a decade was considered the Official Band of the JOB. Our 17-piece band played Big Band music from the 40’s on top of the cargo holds just in front the pilot house during her voyages around the SF Bay. I personally played Bass with the Band and thoroughly enjoyed volunteering along with my fellow musicians on the ship for more than 100 sailings.

My uncle was an Ensign on a Liberty ship during WWII. He told me how a couple times they played a trick on a messman that would bring food up to the bridge so they could eat on watch. They waited till he was coming up the ladder with a big tray of food, then turned the wheel hard over... The ship leaned over suddenly and the loaded tray went Crashing down! They did it one more time and the chief engineer came Snarling and cursing up to the bridge "What the Hell are you doing up here?!?! You're blowing the guts out of the steering gear! He knew they were fooling around and warned them not to do it again unless there was a torpedo coming.
