Kosher rules dictate separation of foods; beef can not be served with milk, etc. so the plates are labeled to ensure non-Kosher cooks and servers don’t mix the foods or put foods on the wrong plates as both service ware and cookware has to be separate.

Just to add on to this for anyone wondering, milk includes things like cheese and yogurt - any milk product, not just literal milk. (Meat is similar - broth, gelatin, bones, etc also count as meat.)

I could listen to Bill Sauder talk about the old great steamships all day long. The man is a living encyclopedia of knowledge and a true gentleman. Also, seeing Ken Marschall and Parks Stephenson (wirh Tom & Matt too, of course) exchanging thoughts and ideas in their natural element is always a treat.

My uncle came across to the UK during WW2 on the Queen Mary when it was a troop ship. He met my Mums sister and married her after the war. She then returned to the States with him as a war bride. Both are passed away now but it was great treading the boards of this ship myself when we visited the States a while back and the Spruce Goose when it was still displayed nearby.

She passed away earlier this year & while not a Veteran of the British Armed Forces, she was a Land Girl. The stories both shared w/me I'll treasure always. One of my biggest regrets will always be not recording those two in any way, because when they got going? It was like listening to the old George Burns & Gracie Allen radio shows. 😊

I've been on board a few times in the last 25 years - once even as an overnight guest. There are parts of the ship which are still amazing and recall her earlier glory, and others which are simply a modern hotel, and a run down one at that in places. As much as I would love to see full restoration/renovation from the keel to the top of her masts, more and more I think we should simply be grateful we still have her at all - but for quirks of fate, she would have been scrapped more than 50 years ago.

Hearing about what's going on with the Queen Mary recently makes me pretty unhappy, especially with the condition the hull is in. If there is any way that any historical society would make a way to fix these problems, I would join it in a heartbeat.

"She ended up being quite a roller". Family story: before I was born, Mum took my (older) brother back to her Britain/London on the Queen Mary back in '54. The story so often told us was that he more than conquered toddling and simply loved being up on deck where he ran his little legs off, from side to side with the movement of the rising and falling ship's deck as dear Mum sat seasick, barely able to watch him. What a way to travel.

An excellent video. Thank you. I remember as a small child in the 1960s, on holiday, building sandcastles on a hot, sunny, English beach, (Southsea, right by the Solent), and my parents looking out to sea and asking ‘what’s that?’. I looked up, and saw this enormous blob on the horizon, far out, not fully visible over the curvature of the earth, yet still dwarfing everything else. It was of course the Mary, coming far out round the Isle of Wight to sail into Southampton. She came so fast - though she must have been slowing down at the time - and she was so impressive. She looked enormous as she made her turn round the Brambles, to sail up the Solent to Southampton. The next day we took one of the tourist boat rides round the docks and sailed right past her. She looked so beautiful, and I longed to sail on her. The strange thing was only the previous week we had done the same thing, and seen the Elizabeth when she was in dock, and we had watched her going out too, but that rapid impressive entrance of the Mary beat it all. I’m so pleased with the recent news that she is going to be saved, and thank the folks of Long Beach for that great decision. My father in law would have loved all of this. He worked at the shipyards on Tyneside, was a Jarrow crusader, and was one of the industrial blacksmiths who broke up the Olympic there. He kept a few bits and pieces from her that he used for projects, (teak decking made great chopping boards and draining boards) which is why I have a lamp, the base of which is a piece of her teak decking. As a historian myself I truly loved this. Thank you.

Thank You for a wonderful video tour !! I love the Queen Mary. When I was about 16 years old, I watched the Queen Mary sailing into Long Beach from a sailing boat at the entrance to the breakwater. I guess that makes me one of the last to see her moving under her own power ! I was there in 1972 on opening day for the public to come tour the Queen Mary again! Since then I visited the ship so many times, I’ve literally lost count. Probably it’s now in the hundreds . I truly love this great ship . When I visit, the first and last thing I do is go up to the curved front superstructure ( just below the John Brown Shipyard Plaque) and give the Queen a big hug and kiss !! Yea I’m a little weird about the Queen 🤷‍♂️ I hope that the City of Long Beach will now get it together and restore the ship to its original condition!!🤞 PS ••• I’ve stayed overnight on the hotel probably about 20 times. Each time it’s been in a different stateroom or suite . On Main Deck , A Deck and B Deck. And guess what , NO GHOSTS !!! I’ve never seen , heard or experienced anything supernatural or haunted!!! Honest !! The ship is not haunted. It’s a happy ship, with a GREAT HISTORY of service to the world in war and peace !!! People are doing the ship a great disservice by continuing their childish BS fantasy’s!! I use to work for Disney for 48 years. I knew the people in marketing that made up those stories about ghosts to try and increase attendance. Cunard kept a detailed list of people who sadly passed away while onboard over her entire career. Guess what, NO LITTLE GIRL ever drowned in the swimming pools of the Queen Mary?!? It’s all made up folks ! All of it ! Sorry, I’m done with my ranting now ! Queen Mary is a wonderful treasure for the world. Everyone just love her , respect her and give her the care and upkeep she truly deserves!❤️ MikeW

Is there anything that can be done to save the ship? From what I’ve heard inspectors basically said “you have 2 years to fix this ship before it capsizes” but the city is too busy battling in court with the old lease holder over who should foot the bill.

    • @btomimatsucunard
      @btomimatsucunard 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The city has basically been neglecting the ship much longer than the current issues with the lease operator and structural issues. If anything can be one, its that the city of Long Beach needs more pressure from both SoCal and abroad. There is one non-profit working to help the ship that I know of, but they are being kept at arms length by the city from what I've heard. I would look into Queen Mary International and reach out to ask what can be done.

When I went before COVID she was in pretty bad shape, let alone how she can't continue to go through one failed lease operator after another. There are many issues the ship faces and it cannot be an either or situation anymore (ie focus on saving one over the other)

I enjoyed your presentation here very much. I saw that you were looking at tags on the piano, does anyone know anything about it? One of a kind? I understand Gershwin played it on his crossing, and I recall seeing a photo on deck of him (1983) sitting at that piano. ( The photo was seen just after I came out of a forward lounge with the piano inside, no one around, so I played it for about 20 minutes, imagine my shock to see the photo of him at THAT piano right afterwards! )

Don't know if you know this. But there is a portion of the Olympic that was incorporated into a hotel in England Saw it on a documentary couple years ago And believe me, that room is extremely beautiful. It gives you the exact feeling like you're on the Olympic Mostly because it's part of the ship itself. Except in a hotel. I'm not sure which one but I know it's in England.

Growing up only a few miles from the Queen Mary as teens we used to go onboard all the time, we ran the hallways day and night, sometimes all night long.
We went as far down as R Deck where she is still all original floors, walls and fixtures. No, no ghosts!
Too bad they destroyed the second class pool area for the hotel but, at least we still have her...
I sailed on the United States twice across the Atlantic, wish our country would wake up to the fact that the Big U is still waiting for our country to put her in New York and put her to use as a hotel, convention center or whatever!

They need to move the ship somewhere else cuz Cali doesn’t take good care of it. What is really like to see is the SS United States and The QM to be restored to exceptional condition. Then they will be docked together in a better place where shopping places and restaurants can be built around them where they will have careers as hotels and museums. For everything it’ll cost about 1 billion dollars so the government might need to step in to help but since there historic ships I think they might be willing to give the loan.

The City of Long Beach bought it and owns it. Is it wasn't for them, this ship would have been scrapped a long time ago. This ship would sink, if you attempted to move it. It's not floating, it's sitting on the bottom.

  • @Gryphonisle

For many years after the ship opened in Long Beach the cork floors of the main shopping gallery had the dark spots of 1950s ladies spike heels around all of the columns. That all disappeared when the floors were redone, but at least they were redone with the same style or look of cork flooring. Sadly, as time has passed, the staterooms have lost their wood and become not even shadows of their former selves just ugly painted small rooms.

I would request a short video on the SS Normandie, the french ocean liner that carried the first operational naval radar and capsized and burned during its conversion to a troop ship in 1942.
"SS NORMANDIE INCIDENT 1942" I think the ship has a storied history for only lasting 15 years, and held the blue riband several times, I'm sure you can find ways to make it even more interesting! She most directly rivaled and competed with the RMS queen mary of the cunard line.

What smartphone are you using fir your ad hoc filming if I may ask Tom? One phone you might like if you film vlog selfie style as well as regularly, then you might like the Zenfone series that has a main camera module that literally flips up to be used as a selfie camera. So you are using your best camera for regular filming and selfie filming. Another advantage is being able to use your phone's screen as a viewfinder as well.

That sounds like a fantastic phone for this purpose. The video was actually shot on several phones - I think I had an iPhone 6 and then an iPhone XR, Emma had an iPhone 6, and some of this was also shot on a Samsung Galaxy (don't know the actual model). There's also quite a lot of footage in this from my Canon t7i's, and I think even a gopro at one point.

Apart from "The Poseidon Adventure" (whose use of the Queen Mary as a filming location is deliciously ironic given that Paul Gallico based the original novel upon the Queen Mary's encounter with a freak wave in 1937.....), one other movie use stands out for me.
In the 1998 version of "The Parent Trap," Nick Parker and Elizabeth James, whose twin daughters, Hallie and Annie, were so memorably played by Lindsay Lohan, meet and marry aboard the QE2 during the movie's opening sequence. Except, that the interior and exterior deck shots were all shot onboard the Queen Mary. The Grand Salon really stands out, with one beautiful shot of a group of stewards/waiters lighting a row of table candles in sync with one another. The whole sequence is scored with the Nat King Cole classic song 'L.O.V.E.'
If you have not seen this sequence, here it is:
