@@Deluxe854 Yeah, XY has been hated in retrospective. People have Black & White in high regards, forgetting they love Black 2 & White 2 and not the original quite as much. They are able to dismiss the backlash it had on release, such as the bold choice of only have new Pokémon to pick, or a third of Generation 5's Pokémon took too much inspiration from Generation 1. The Pokémon design was basically _"Gen 1 but urban instead of wild!"_
I am not going to argue that XY is unfinished. It is. It also over-corrected some of the flaws of Generation 5. The bad XP formula of Generation 5 (scaled and unshared) in hope to prevent 1-2 overleveled Pokémon team required to have a carpet of high level weak Pokémon to maintain a team. Thus the absurd evolution level: do Mienshoo really requires level 50, or Mandibuzz level 54?! It failed so bad, the designer just introduce XP punching bags as Audino on every route to cut the grind.
Which lead to Generation 6 bad XP formula: unscaled and share. Basically you can follow the overlevel Pokémon strategy from Gen 1 to 4, but instead it got applied on your whole team. When you add the most extensive base Pokédex to date (430ish non-legendary wild Pokémon) and XP on catch, then the difficulty is absolutely absent when you don't renew your team and catch them all.
This has been corrected in Generation 7. Yet, Sun and Moon feels more like 6.5G: the environnement is better made but the 3D Pokémon animation and combat didn't improved. It also made a bold choice of overscripting the progression. If XY is the Mario 64, then SM should be the Sunshine yet... feels more Mario 64 DLC. USUM was the nail: it felt more like New Game + with DLC content, very far from the reimagination of BW to B2W2. This is where the fans really started to research culprit.
In the end, XY isn't bad. Just very good despite being incomplete and having obvious flaws. It suffers from not having a third version. In a sense, ORAS is highly regarded despite being Gen6. Would 4th Gen remembered if Platinum didn't step up to fix the latency, the pacing and the bugs? People are hating XY in retrospective because they pinpoint the downfall from here. Yet, XY were an improvement! The downfall came afterward when Gamefreak couldn't follow the tight time constraint with such a small team, which lead to more and more underwhelming and half baked games.

you forgot to mention that a reason why x and y probably felt "unfinished/undercooked" was most likely because of the giant leap to 3d, requiring every old pokemon to also have a model made for them on top of the new pokemon
ive never understood why people dislike sun and moon, pokemon fans wanted something new and they got exactly that, seems like another black and white situation, where people hated on release (though i cant argue that z moves werent just a terrible idea)
i'll also die on the hill of og RSE being ass compared to ORAS, i think its the best remakes weve ever gotten besides HGSS

To me gen 6 was an over-reaction to the negative feedback from gen 5, remember gen 5 was the worst selling games in the series history and at the time (even though those numbers are good from the video game industry) it was harald as the begining of the end.
So many things that now we see in hindsight as positives were regarded as negatives. (Couldn't use your favorite old Pokemon till after the end of the game? STILL using sprites? The exp scaling made it hard to over level.)
So much of x&y was an attempt to pander and get older fans that had been lost during 4 & 5 and it worked. The numbers did ungabunga and honestly the ungabunga has not stopped so game freak has learned the lesson of taking the easy way out with a new gimmick and attention on a couple old mons and boom you're making bank.
Game freak is continuing to see just how much they can cut and still have people purchase their products and with each generation, (even with the buggy mess that was SV) the consumer continues to buy buy buy

I especially relate with Nemona and I hope that future games keep the multiple path thing because I enjoyed having it be more varied in what you do, I especially enjoyed the Star Barrages. For me it started the decline in the middle of Gen 5. Black and White are my favorite games. Black 2 and White 2 though, not so much.
However, I liked the games that came out after Black and White more than the games that came out before overall. While I disliked the map layout of B2 & W2 compared to B&W, I liked it more than gens 1, 2, 3 and 4. Same for the map layouts for Gen 6 onward. That means a lot for me as part of the deal is exploring and some of those older generations were bad at it. Don't get me wrong though, I didn't enjoy the straight maps with no deviation either. I just enjoyed them better than the constant needless and oftentimes stupidly done backtracking with no additional content in the previously visited areas.
I think it's just that Pokemon was not my first RPG. I wasn't a child when the series came out and had dozens of JRPGs under my belt long before I was ever clued into the existence of Pokemon. So gen 5, Black and White in particular, felt like the most complete RPG experiences. Aside from Colosseum and XD: Gale of Darkness that is but that's a whole other discussion.
Up until Black and White, I don't think Pokemon was even the best "monster collector" game out there. The Dragon Warrior Monsters series and even the Robopon series had far better games. While I haven't played it, I would imagine so was SMT Devil Children. Hell, you might even have to consider the Suikoden series as a "monster collector" as well since 108 characters to get in each game is pretty similar.

They were my fist pokemon games so every time people say "Modern Pokemkn has lost his magic" I'm like "But Sun and Moon are right there!!!". In all fairness I will admit that by Gen 14 I'll also probably be disenchanted with the franchise compared to when I first started playing, But that doesn't change the fact that Gen 7 has lots of great things to enjoy (Great Pokemon variety, Good story and an Amazing setting just to name a few) , and I wish people would give it more credit. Sure it also has it's dowsides, the unskipable cutscenes annoy me too, but there is no such thing like a perfect game.

I am curious, and i dont mean this in an "old man yells at the clouds" kind of way. But, how old are you? I am basically the same age as pokemon +/- a few months, started the series with Blue and then silver on my gameboy color, and have owned games from every generation, I was so deep into the franchise throughout the 2000s-2010s, and still am today, but that was my childhood. I say all that to point out, that while we call gen 5 a banger/classoc now, theres a reason its "underappreciated". I think we have on a lot of the rose tinted glasses, as at the time it was not well received at all, the fans were already getting tired of the "pokemon formula" and gen 6 was a huge over correction from pokemon. For example, dragon was broken and dominated competitive. So, here comes the shiny and new fairy type, which then proceeded to dominate competitive lol but then ORAS came and it was like holy hell, gen 3 with gen 6 updates, one of the greatest pokemon games ever. A little too hand holding sure, but a modern classic. And, rather unfortunately this was at the time of the social media boom with the new generation of players rolling in as well. I feel like this turned into a bit of a rant... My point being, if you are around my age, a lot of us see the new games as getting worse, but they've always been not great, we just got older, and they started getting made for gen z/alpha, I dont agree with their decision to dumb certain things down, but if you go into it knowing that is how it is, and just like playing pokemon, the new games are fun, way more pokemon with a ton of variety, way, WAY better move sets available (free my boy Sky Uppercut), no HMs, better character models, no everstone haunter. Im glad you're a fan of gen 9 as I agree, its probably the best in a long time, but this is also nearing the end of the switches life, which pokemon historically starts console lifes poor and then gets better later, think D/P vs B2W2. I think they are taking strides, and listening to us all a bit more. And I hope the trends continue and we can all keep enjoying poke.on for ywars to come. Rant over, sorry.

Just in case it gets read this way: I'm not a game freak meat rider, and I know there are issues, trust me I know, saying they have always been not great was more of a "try to have fun and temper expectations a bit" than a "Game freak is S++ tier and do no wrong" sentiment. There are absolutely things they could do better, they are the highest grossing media franchise of all time, I wish they made some more games per generation than feeling the need to pump out new stuff every 3/4 years to fill merchandising cycles, I wish they made the games a bit harder, or just had more challenge mode type options. I'm not a complacent/ ignorant fan. Just realized as I got older that pokemon will probably always be made for kids, and to nit pick it, while often deserved, is more of me getting older and more critical than anything. But who knows, anything can happen. You got a like and some new eyes from me, hope your journey through the gen 6+ games goes well!

I think what people fail to realize is that older games feel better because of nostalgia. If you actually look objectively at them you'll see there aren't the masterpieces everyone praises. The biggest example are GCS and HGSS, and I'm saying it as someone who's first gen was 4. A very incomplete region with a shallow story that tries to bring back team rocket but fails miserably, because let's be honest their moments in Johto were forgettable. The pokedex of the region is full of baby pokemon, and most of the new mons were spread in the shittiest way possible: with some locked in Kanto post game and others basically at the end, you couldn't even try them, to the point where that feeling of belonging that pokemon have to their original regions disappears, because honestly, when we think about Macgarco we associate with gen 3, not 2. The kanto region is another hollow mess, with again no story whatsoever, wild pokemon with redicously low levels/not even fully evolved, and as usual terribly spread across the routes. And let's not mention the absolutely horryfing level curve. I tried playing Pokemon Crystal after playing Pokemon Soul Silver years ago, and god was it awful. I can't bring myself to keep playing because it takes forever to level up my team to the right number when the wild pokemon are all underlevelled asf. You said that ORAS were lucklaster, but I'd say that HGSS were far more lucklaster when it came to fixing Johto's massive problems (again, level curve, new pokemons unaivalabe until end game). And I don't get what you meant by bringing up that USUM was like replaying SM, that could be said for Emerald and Platinum too but alright. I don't want to sound rude but the points you brought up weren't really convincing. Sure, the newer gens are rushed, but they defintely don't suck. Gen 7 had one of the best story out of all the main series alongside a wonderful villain, a memorable cast, a new formula that finally breaks from the old overused system (kahunas and islands), new pokemons...

Totally see your point and don't necessarily disagree. The emerald/platinum thing is just cuz I remember the distinct differences at the end (sky pillar and distortion world) whereas for USUM I don't really remember the differences besides fusing necrozma - but that's why I mentioned I didn't wanna comment too much on those cuz I genuinely don't remember them as well !

Black and White 2 will always be my favorite games. I’m not quite as fond of the originals even though they were my first games. I honestly do not like any of the Sinnoh games very much. The postgame in particular is not fun. I didn’t like Heart Gold that much either but I played the beginning of the game years before the rest and my team was hot garbage so I’m willing to accept that I should replay those before forming an opinion. For Emerald I also had a hot garbage team so I didn’t really like the game. Might need to replay that too. I enjoy X and Y for being pretty simple to replay and I liked ORAS. Sword and Shield are just really fun despite all their issues and the DLC was peak. PLA’s unique gameplay style truly does make it the best Pokémon game in recent history. Let’s Go Eevee was kind of mediocre but the multiplayer was fun. I liked BDSP the first time but honestly Sinnoh just feels mediocre to me. Probably still better than the Gen 4 versions but the lack of Platinum content stings. Scarlet and Violet also felt mediocre outside of some good Pokémon designs, music, and storylines. Not even the DLC saved it this time. I really liked Crystal (Typhlosion starter) but I’m not sure how much of that was the novelty of seeing how sophisticated Pokémon was even back in the GBC era. I liked Gold less but I picked Feraligatr and his stats were weird. Is the fact I find the games more fun when I have strong Pokémon a bad thing? Gen 1 is fun in a grind-fest teambuilding way but not on the same level as most of the other games. I loved Moon the first time I played it as a kid, mainly because of the story. I didn’t even play Ultra Moon when it came out. The burnout was real. When I did, it felt like mostly the same game but with a worse story and some differences that felt more strange than interesting at the time. Did not enjoy that much despite it having more content than the original. Also need to replay Gen 7 but I’m not sure which to do first (normal or Ultra).

Im 30 and Gen 6 is my first pokemon game. I love it so much I cant hate on it. I see your points about having few legendary pokemon but to me it was the journey that was fun not so much catching the strongest legendary. You talked about rivals and I see what you mean but I saw them more as friends. I do agree that a 3rd game should've been made but at least we're getting a remake.

Hey could you explain why do you think that gen 9 is better than 6/7/8? Is it the story? Gameplay? Open world? New Pokèmon?

    • @PokemonRangerJackson
      @PokemonRangerJackson  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

Mainly story I would say. I thought a lot of the mons were cool, but I think I could say that for every gen. I loved the region in general, it was very fun to explore the open world. I enjoyed the dlc and a lot of the characters were very well done imo. (But also could just be recency bias and im willing to admit that 😅)

I have been playing (and replayed) Pokémon games since Red and Blue came out and I will DEFINITELY tell you that if I had a dollar for every time I heard and/or read articles and threads online that said "*Insert gen game here* sucks" during it's release (Yes, even when Red and Blue came out) only to have the same people retract those statements down the line years later and say they are great games, I'd have enough money to buy GameFreak. Every gen game is unique and have both great and questionable choices.
But I will definitely say that everybody, including myself, has a right to have a least favorite. Just don't say a gen is bad during it's release only to change your mind years down the line. That comes off as hypocritical.

You conveniently leave out how painfully easy Kalos was. That’s singlehandedly the worst part about that gen and completely eliminates the replay value
