- I Made a Gary Oak ROM Hack of Pokémon Fire Red. And it was a Hardcore Nuzlocke!
Gary Oak was the OG rival in Pokémon. And lets be honest here: he was better than Ash for quite a while. But for some reason, people like Ash more. So lets play a hardcore Nuzlocke of Pokemon Fire Red as Gary. I bet he could have been the Kanto Champion!

I love this but I have a request. Could you do one where the gym leaders make more sense than in the series? A professional gym leader who’s been doing this for years is beat by children who just started their journey..it doesn’t make sense. I think Ash wouldn’t have been able to beat Brock for example unless he trained up a Mankey or something..and I think Brock’s Pokémon would be pretty strong. Or what’s the point? He’s weaker in series than random people who aren’t gym leaders. So I think Brock, right from the start should be at least 1/4 as strong as the elite four. Also do all Pokémon trainers from any city have to start at Brock? Like do they have to travel all the way from Cinnabar to Pewter to begin their gym badge journey?

Does any Gary moment really beat the meme of him showing 10 badges in an 8 badge region? Where did he get the other two badges, huh? Does Kanto have more than 8 gyms? Are there towns we didn't see? Did he get them somewhere else? WHERE ARE THEY FROM?!

There were multiple gyms that didn't show up in the anime, trainers need to beat "at least 8 gym and earn at least 8 badges is qualified" , didn't say any limit amount of gym badges
Yeah, though it wasn’t really shown in the anime, there are more than 8 gyms to chose from.
You might remember the episode with the scyther and electabuzz guy fighting each other. They were the leaders of two gyms attempting to get officially recognized by the indigo league. So we don’t actually know how many badges are possible

For a lot of the badges, yeah he did. He worked so hard he got 2 extra badges, and still decided to fight Giovanni.
Tbf in anime there are many off screen fights ash does, like we saw he has ten victory streak we at most only saw half of them so it's possible ash also battle just as much trainer also tbf ash did had more info on pokedex going on, like oak acknowledge his research outside of battles

What if… Now this is just me thinking this; Melanie (who had Bulbasaur) and Damien (who had Charmander) were the other two from Pallet Town but never knew who Gary or Ash were. As far as I know/remember, Ash never mentioned Pallet Town to them and we never see anyone in the league with a Venusaur or a Charizard (aside from Ash)

@@NuzlockeJoe And, in retrospect it's foreshadowing for him eventually giving up being a trainer to become a Pokemon Researcher like his Grandfather! It's a nice touch both ways! Shows that as a trainer, his arrogance is at least well-founded, but also the start of him getting more interested in studying Pokemon than battling with them. Good stuff!

I can recommend you Team Rocket Edition. You don’t play as Blue; obviously, you play as a Rocket grunt; but you see his side of the story through your interactions with him, as well as a lot of the rest of the corruption of Kanto.

Nah, Ash traded after the SS Anne set off(and traded back before it sunk), Gary got off the boat before it even left so he wouldn't have face Raticate.
I love his growth in the anime though. He eventually matures unlike Ass Ketchup.
He does become a cool dude, he just deserved to have more wins imo

Idk diglet being able to move its head at the speed of light is definately incredible. Being able to speed down ones self at that speed is even crazier. In short dont give the diglets alcohol
It's important to note that Ash's Pikachu's base stats are probably legendary status (600-720) for some unexplained reason

I haven’t watched all of the anime, but I’m a HUGE Gary fan! My favorite part of this is that you obviously don’t do Gary’s voice, but your character of him is spot on. You killed it with his narcissistic and cocky attitude, and the jokes and memes weren’t in your face and instead were just funny. If you wanna make more Gary vids, you sure got my vote! 😁

Imagine how much more fitting it'd be if the romhack tweaked it so the Ceruelean city and SS Anne rival encounters triggered on your way back out, so you run into the rival much like how in the vanilla game Blue runs into you while coming back from the area you're about to enter.

I'd like to point out that "earning" a badge is subjective. Yes Ash earned some badges by doing things other than combat because that's not the only way to grow as a person. When Misty's sisters wanted to just give Ash the badge, he flat out refused it. Ash also refused to force Pikachu to evolve to beat Lt. Serge's Raichu and let Pikachu choose. This is completely fair because the Anime isn't the Video Game. Ash actually did stuff to get those badges, not just defeat people in combat.
Maybe, it just is a problem that is pretty unique to kanto. I mean the whole point of earning badges is to be able to enter the conference and battle against other trainers. In kanto though, ash got half of his badges through either a lame “victory”, like using sprinklers on onix, or being given the badge for saving pokemon from a fire or making someone laugh. It gets so bad that in one of the Blaine episodes, ash basically expects a badge after helping Blaine even without a battle. So I get where your coming from, but I still think it’s lame how many badges were given to ash without winning a battle

@@shirrenthewanderer414Sorry to break it to you but that is how badges are SUPPOSED to be earned! You’re intended to show how STRONG you are..doing some silly deeds or kind deeds ain’t that. Battles are REQUIRED to earn badges, this was just not how it worked in the gen1 anime because a sequel wasn’t planned exactly and they didn’t know entirely the logic behind everything. In no other gens does Ash get away with NOT earning his badges. Even in the first anime he was constantly made fun of for not earning his badges just getting them handed to him (Blaine made fun of him, Misty did, Gary ofc did)
If you didn’t need to battle for them, then why do you have to battle the elite 4 and champion? Why do you have to enter a tournament in the anime? The gym challenge is based around BATTLES and STRENGTH! That is why! It’s about who is the best at battling..which of you need other traits to get good like kindness and respect ect ect but those are NOT tested individually, just if you can defeat others in battle. If the goal is to be the strongest why would the goal posts be something completely irrelevant??
@@testerwulf3357 Why doesn't "Strength" mean "being better in battle"? Isn't treating your pokemon with respect another form of "strength"? Remember in Ash's first battle against Blaine Pikachu almost fell into the lava which Blaine points out that Ash would have failed as a Pokemon trainer if that had happened.

I'll always have respect for Gary. As a kid 'beating' the elite 4 not healing; blissfully unaware that: GARY MF OAK already beat me to it! And the real championship battle just began, taught me so much. I always liked Gary, he had a Jolteon for me (I always beat him during the story) but he got his revenge (at first). I grinded, bought revives, and re-tried until I finally beat him.

Gary didn’t get enough screen time in the series. We should’ve seen him have full battles with Ash like 8 times. He was the main rival for like 5 seasons. The fact that we didn’t know his starter till the Johto League is ridiculous

Youd've had 45 pokémon if you caught Geodude and Nidoran until you had the appropiate natures, which Gary does do.

I don't like how the Episodes are out of order. Ash being at Lavender Town should have had 5 Pokemon as that was before he caught Primeape. Umbreon against Sabrina is a cheat because Eevee was still Eevee when Ash returned from the Orange Islands it would have made more sense for him to use Scyther. The 2 Giovanni Battles could have been stand ins for the Gym Leaders we don't know of. Champion battle Ash could have used Kingler & Muk as he used those during the tournament. If you go with Orange League Team you could have used Tauros as well as Ash uses it at Pumelo Island.

Gary would know about the Diglett because he is smart like his grand father, the only reason Gary isn't stronger than Ash is because in Anime its not about how smart you are, it more about how much "friendship" you build with your partners, that is why Ash's un=evolve pokemon are so strong.
Well that and at times plott armor. Thou Ash realisticly lost every league until he went back to school and got educated. And let his Pokenon evolve.
My favorite Gary moment is their battle after the orange islands. He's humbled himself, but is clearly confident and capable. Best Gary.

Thank you very much for creating this romhack I was such a big fan of Gary Oak when I was younger. I was wondering if you could help me out playing it? How did you get so many coins to buy so many TMs (Shadow Ball, Ice Beam, etc)? Did you actually get them legit from the casino?
Also how did you evolve all of the pokemon that can't be involved normally in Gen through without an external game (Graveler to Geodude and Eevee to Umbreon)

Thanks! So I did actually just cheat in the extra coins to make things easier.
As for evolutions, I thought I had made eevee evovle just by leveling up, but apparently I did not. I can fix that. Graveller though will simply evolve at level 37. I can work on the other things and try to fix them real quick.

I changed the code so eevee evolves at level 25, and all of the prizes in the game corner only cost one coin. The text hasn't changed, but you can get any of the prizes. You'll need to use the new patch files in the google drive folder to a new version of Fire Red, but your save will still be good, as long as you don't change any of the file names.

Actually we know of at least two (Gary & Ash) and a possible 3rd. The kid who abandoned his Charmander early on which Ash acquired could've been one of the four who left Pallet Town. Damian is potentially one of the four given that he had a Charmander, but I don't exactly see proof he was from Pallet Town, just that he could've lived in another nearby town & went to Pallet Town to pick up his first Pokemon before departing on his journey.

Crazy part about Gary's 10 badges is that he only has 3 badges that are the same as ash. So it's possible that there are 15 gyms in Kanto.

Well, to be fair, people like Ash more because he was made to be relatable. An excitable ten year old being able to experience his life long dream of attempting to be a Pokemon Master. Gary was *literally* made to be a jerk to him, lol. But they both get better. Ash matures (despite every season somehow LOSING esperience) and Gary starts becoming a better person after his two intense losses in the Indigo Arc (Giovanni and the trainer who knocked him out in the conference). Yes, he was definitely the better trainer at the start, but he was also certainly a lot more arrogant, even if it was more understandable due to being raised by (or at least AROUND) Professor Oak.
My real question is: If Oak KNEW that he was going to have four trainers coming to pick up a pokemon, why didn't he have four pokemon (I know this was answered in Pokemon 4 Ever, but come on!) that were ready for them, lol?
Great story! But I think maybe the anime shows us that not always will the better win, maybe that's why Gary lost in the Indigo League and Ash performed better. You just proved the truth, Joe! That Gary oak is really the best of the two!

Based on the video games and the anime on 100% certain that professor oak gave Gary a lot of free Pokemon to help him with his Pokedex and give him an edge as a trainer 😂 in the video games when you run into him he states to have more Pokemon than possible in three meetings the only thing that would make it possible is through copious trades or if professor okay I've been gifting him Pokemon along his journey has he reached certain milestones
