  • Dr. James Dowd, orthopedic surgeon at Jordan-Young Institute, focuses on caring for patients living with knee and hip arthritis. Dr. Dowd has seen excellent outcomes with cortisone injections for the knee and hip. They can reduce pain, reduce inflammation, and improve quality of life. They can also be used as a diagnostic tool. Check out this video to learn why Dr. Dowd recommends steroid injections! Know more about Jordan-Young Institute at www.jordan-younginstitute.com/

Wow, awesome video, very helpful. Much more explained than drs I've been to. I'm just wondering if patients should go to an arthritis institute or an orthopedic. Super job and thanks for hitting all the bases.

I just had an injection inmy bursa, pi had had pain so bad leading up to the shot that i was unable to walk up an incline or stairs.... .. im so annoyed at the orthopedist that said he doesnt like to give them as people get complacent and dont strengthen their muscles with exercise... one shot and two days later my pants size is down by at least one ,nit was that swollen and now can take 2 stairs at a time.... pain may be back in 3 month s but at least i know it was my bursa.. and that is such a relief in and of itself. I ll admit it was painful but only for a minute then when the analgesia wore off some hours later it was very painful to bear weight for about a day.. then almost as good as new!!!! 😊 i had been limping for months

I have lower back pain especially when standing oh, I received two shots in my back about a month ago. I have had less pain in my back for the last week or so. I suppose the cortisone shot is working. Does that mean my pain is muscular or nerves?

Many top orthopedic surgeons are still using cortisone for pain relief. But new studies are showing worse results long term in their use substantially to non use. (Diagnostically sure that’s great). I’m more curious in the increasing evidence and mitigation of pain syndromes by non localised testosterone replacement therapy. Obviously does nothing for the arthritis. But there seems to be a strong link with chronic pain syndromes, increased energy, ability to exercise. I think we might have to rethink regenerative medicine and the benefit of TRT for older populations, who just want quality of life.

Cortisone hasn’t done much of anything for my knees now. The orthopedic physician told me before I got the injections told me I need my knees replaced. I don’t want it done, but my limping, bowlegs, and pain will be over if I do it. Maybe. But no skiing for months. And people have died from blood clots and pulmonary embolisms.

It’s an extremely conservative approach to solving hip pain. Steroids and corticosteroids are bandaids. One time is ok. Multiple steroid shots for long term relief isn’t prudent. The pain is relieved and when you go exercise, you exacerbate it. The primary problem hasn’t been dealt with. Steroids mask the symptoms of joint degeneration. I understand taking a cautious approach to hip pain. And ultimate courses of treatment to relieve pain. Even using anti inflammatories or any other pain masking drugs is also not prudent. Especially for someone that is and wants to be physically active. Not to mention the stomach damaging effects of anti inflammatories! Get in there and replace it! How much pain does a person need to be in before surgery becomes the answer?! I’m currently in a shit load of pain. I have an appointment with an ortho coming up. I used to work as a physical therapy aide. This pain is beyond some corrective exercises supervised by a PT. AYKM?!

Since you are in lots of pain, it makes sense to have the surgery. But continued injections can help those who need to put off surgery or who are not in a great deal of distress until they have the time to be recumbent and rehab their joint.

Dr. Dowd, you degenerate your patients and we will treat to regenerate our patients. The fact that you can’t diagnose whether it’s knee, hip, or back without putting a steroid into a joint tells me just how poor a diagnostician you are.
