  • In this video, I discuss what to do and consider after receiving a cortisone injection.
    Cortisone is a strong anti-inflammatory medicine used to treat a variety of conditions in Sports Medicine. It is one of our most popular injection options. It is used to treat osteoarthritis, tendinitis, tennis elbow, and more.
    One of the most important things to be aware of is what to do AFTER the injection. In this video I break down my post-cortisone injection protocol for patients.

    I’m a 70 yr old senior citizen. I live in Victoria BC. This morning I had a cortisone injection in my right hip for Bursitis. I have no idea how I got it or what I might have done. I thought the bursitis was painful! The injection was extremely painful! I was so surprised by this and the pain since I had it. I’ve had headaches coming and going all day and evening. I was originally hoping to get out on buses to get some groceries tomorrow, but have a feeling I won’t be going far. I truly hope this shot works after all this pain. Thanks for shattering info. Thank you for making this video! I live in India where is common for doctors to just kind of tell you to do what they say and it will get better without really explaining, in my experience. I was concerned because after having an injection for carpal tunnel my pain has been increased for the last two days so this sets me at ease a bit. There is really not that much information on what it feels like and I had started to worry because as a percussionist I rely on my hands to do work.

      Yea in certain cultures medicine is viewed differently. I find when I treat patients from various countries, they can sometimes seem confused when I want to make the decision with them as they are so used to doctors telling them what they need. This is one of the main differences in north american healthcare that I have noticed personally.
      I'm glad you found the video helpful. I made it so even my patients can reference it since they often forget my instructions understandably.

    I found out that hard way that one of the potential side effects doctors don't tell you about or even admit is leg cramping. I had a injection in my knee a month ago and ever since I've gotten multiple leg cramps at night - up to double digits. I've had leg cramps before, but never more than one per night and infrequently, usually when I'm dehydrated. I called the doctor's office to report the problem and to see what I could do about it and they wouldn't even talk to me. All they did was have the nurse lie and tell the receptionist that the cramps weren't related to the cortisone shot. The cramps started right after the shot and no other variable has changed. I asked the receptionist to have the nurse call me and she never did.

    • @SonamMD
      @SonamMD  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Cramping is not typically a symptom I have seen. However I will note when you do something enough you can definitely see strange side effects. Sometimes it is really hard to discern if this is a red herring or not.

Here is a quote from cortisone info: "In addition, corticosteroids frequently cause cramps, particularly in the early stages of treatment. This side effect is not especially known to physicians but is commonplace among patients." It just show that often doctors are the least informed when it comes to drugs.

    • @SonamMD
      @SonamMD  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There are theoretical risks to tendons and ligaments following a cortisone injection. On a biological level the tendon/tissues can be weakened for a few weeks following an injection. This is why I advise all my patients to avoid any heavy lifting for the first week after the injection and progress slowly thereafter. Most of my patients do not have any issues afterwards with a single injection. The side effects become more prominent the more injections you have in a single site.
