I am 59, this past July I had a work injury in my right knee after repetitive kneeling on a concrete floor. MRI pointed to a possible lateral anterior horizontal meniscus tear but no ligament injury or tears. There was a small effusion which is also visible externally with the knee looking large and puffier than the after knee. 12 degrees extension were lost by September and so far have not regained it even with 3 weeks of PT. I am seeing the ortho doc today and I foresee he will want to do a cortisone injection. I wonder if a ialuronic acid injection is appropriate if non infectious synovitis is present. I am willing to pay out of pocket if this is a better option compared to cortisone.
I have had bone on bone in both knees for a very long time. Cortisone did almost nothing for a very short time.. A friend observed an add somewhere on Genvisk injections. I started to do 5 in each knee and did them for almost three years. The Clinic closed down last July and I researched and found another . I started with the new clinic three weeks ago. This clinic is giving me the same treatments but their' procedure is a little different. They also are doing PT that the other clinic did not do. I have had one shot of anti-inflammatory in both knees and two jell in both knees. and two weeks of PT. I was in pain when I started the new Clinic. I have noticed my pain has lessened over 50% in the short time I have been doing the new clinic. They also require I wear a Brace after each shot for two hours. I also do Ice besides their' ice, after the shot, on the evening of the shots. (my idea) I am an active 89 year old. My only health problem is MUCHO arthritis. I am very impressed with this new clinic. I feel the PT is one of the reasons I am doing so much better at this time. I am curious to why such different results and how much longevity I will experience with the new clinic. That's my story!
I just had both of my knees done today and they hurt so bad a couple of hours afterwards! It feels like my arthritis on steroids! I can barely walk and have to use a walker to get around. Each step and even laying stationary is excruciatingly painful! I am hoping that this is the storm before the peace.
Pain is not typically this bad in people post injection, I would encourage you to follow up with your provider. Things like the injection technique and approach also matter. However, this requires an in person assessment for a proper exam.
I play a lot of sports and I have a basketball tournament this July. Should I get it right away or should I wait a little? Is it gonna help me play the way I was if I get the injection? I also had prior knee surgery in 2016. Thank you so much!@@SonamMD
Just recently diagnosed with arthritis in both knees my doctor doesn’t recommend this he says it doesn’t work, all he told me was to take Tylenol if needed, not at all happy, he is a younger person so he should be up to date on the newer procedures
I got bilateral get injections in the morning at 9am , now its midnight and im in severe knee pains. I just took two tylenole pills and im using ice pack , hope it helps🥲 i barely can walk or even move my knees when i lay down. I’ll wait for 48 hours and if it gets worse I’ll call my provider. I didn’t have pain in the beginning up to 7-8 hours and I didnt expect such severe pains aftermath. 😢
Chndromalacia Patella. What keeps the gel (HA) in the affected area? Is it injected into a joint capsule that retains it? Otherwise wouldn't the gel just run out of the area? Why my doc did my 3 injections she placed the needle about 3 inches above my knee. Yes, she used floroscopy. I just wondered how that injection site would let the HA under my patella to cushion it's cartilage. TIA.
See my provider didn't give me any post care instructions. I switched from silcone to h.a. because he very briefly explained it's natural and would last longer. But damn does it hurt! Here I am 8 hours after injection, where I immediately went to work. The injection itself hurt, as if the h.a. was pushing my knee cap to the brink of my knee. And I'm sore and angry #AF right now. I got a 16 hour work day, when I should called out of work to heal for at least 48 hrs. Be weary out there, this pain is more present and annoying than the pain I was having without it.
That was my experience! The pain was unbelievable. I had PRP and HA at same time and said I would never do that again..that was 6 months ago and now I'm going to have HA only and so dreading it because of the extreme pain. Like most no instructions provided and I have done most things wrong post injection.
Good videos and expertise.....I got my injections (one each knee ) 2 months ago and they are working just ok. I have also just started hyaluronic acid topical cream applications as my home remedy. Your thoughts on if this will help supplement the injections? I am doing 2 applications a day for a week, one week off and another week of 2 a day. I just finished the first week.
Thank you for this video. It was easy to understand and made me feel hopeful and at ease for my injection. I’m at a moderate to severe level of arthritis in my knees and not qualified for replacement at my age. So the shots are my last hope as of now. Looking into what to expect and how to do post care as best as possible. Thank you again!
Hi, Dr. Sonam. I’m 64 years old with an arthritis knee. My previous doctor recommended cortisone shot when he diagnosed me back in 2021. I have had one shot yearly since then. I’m now living in a new state and saw another doctor who has recommended Orthovisc, 3 x 2mL syringes. Will this injection work on someone who has had cortisone shots, especially at my age?
I still work full time , it sounds like ill need to take a few days off as Im a rural mail carrier. Standing for 2-3 hours and getting in and out of the mail truck to deliver packages . Long 9 hour route. My knees are hurting everyday , I take tylenol all the time , it just takes the edge off.
Does it work for bone on bone? I have no cartilage left in my knees and my hips have some cartilage left but there is so much osteoarthritis that I am going to have both hips repaired. Same for the knees eventually. I am 65 and been dealing with severe inflammatory joint pain since my late 20's. I take relief anywhere I can get it, either opiods, anti-inflammatory meds and cortisone.
You can still perform these injections in severe arthritis however they may work for a shorter period of time. The other thing to consider is if you have inflammatory joint pain, hyaluronic acid alone may not be its best option.
@@SonamMD Thank you kindly for your response! I spoke with my Ortho doctor yesterday and got an out right it won't work. My BMI has to be 35 before she does surgery. I'm at 39 and I'm in excruciating pain. I've been doing mild exercises to strengthen my muscles and just started ADF to accelerate my weight loss! Again thank you for your expedient response.
I had the HA (Synvisc One) injection in my right knee on June 28. My knee felt great for 3 weeks. I played several rounds of disc golf pain free. Now, four weeks to the day after I had the injection, my knee really hurts and is slightly swollen. I'm assuming that means the HA has run its course and I'm back to where I was before? I have grade 3 OA and I'm not bone on bone yet. I'm really sad about this. Calling my Dr tomorrow to make an appointment. Is this normal for an HA injection? Or, was the 3 weeks pain free all I'm going to get? Edit: 12 hours after writing this, my knee is now very swollen. I wish I had never got the HA injection, but I had to give it a try. It really helped a friend of mine. I won't try it again.
Is hyaluronic acid part of the substance inside the synovial fluid? As i have knee pain, stiffness & knee joint effusion and knee fluid aspersion was suggested, isn't it contradicted to hyaluronic acid injection?? .if swelling is due to too much fluid because of some damages, and if HA injection is for arthritis bone on bone as a result of not enough fluid ?? Does that mean if you have swelling, you can't have HA injection?? I'm confused.
So this is a bit more complex of a question. HA does make up a part of synovial fluid. However, when arthritis is severe, it can cause a build up of joint fluid and this can cause swelling, pain, stiffness. In many cases, I will aspirate out the knee prior to putting in the HA injection. In cases with a lot of swelling I may also inject a mixture of Ha and cortisone. The amount of fluid I inject in is usually much less than what I take out. The other thing present in joint fluid is white blood cells and inflammatory markers. These are not present in the HA we put into the knee.
I find that sometimes they can be equally as effective. Also in many patients, one may work better than the other. In these cases, it is not uncommon for me to try both.
If I had legament tear acl so can I take that injection? And can I its helpful for me... because of I am a sports person and that I need and your suggestion very helpful for me...my international tournament is coming... please reply
My job requires me to be on my feet most of the 8 hours, will that interfere the day after my injection? I don't want to do anything to mess up a good result. Thanks
I usually recommend my patients try to time their injection so they are not working the day of or after. While it can be done, it may just flare you up. I like my personal 48 hour rule. I’d always check with the doctor who’s doing your injection just to be sure.
You specifically mentioned young, what about 80+ year old who had hyaluronic acid injection, does your video cover , include, apply to these age bracket? Does your advice still applies to this age
Hello, amazing & helpful video, thank you! A couple of questions, please: 1. Monovisc vs Durolane? I am 57 with stage 3 O/A to RT knee. I've had one doctor recommend Durolane (as that's the only HA product he uses) and another recommend Monovisc so I'm now left being unsure which one is best. Is one less likely to carry the risk of an allergic reaction? Does one provide more cushioning than the other? Does one last longer than the other? 2. I don't feel comfortable having a doctor inject HA "blindly", so to ensure it's injected definitely into the right place but which is better to guide the injection, in your opinion, Ultrasound or Fluoroscopy? The Interventional Radiology Clinic I'd be having the injection at does either depending on what the doctor requests (U/S vs Fluoro), which is a better diagnostic to guide the injection in your opinion? Thanks so much from Alberta 🙂
i just had the injection(HA + Steroids), not only that doesnt hurt at all but there is nothing special you need to do after the injection.....you should be able to carry doing whatever you want to do IF the pain is not above 4 from 1 to 10
Im glad you had a good experience. Instructions can vary post injection for sure. These are my personal recommendations for my patients but I always advise people to follow the advice of the person who performs their injection.
Thanks for te video! I had a cartilage repair surgery, but after 7 months I forgot all about it and was moving very heavy stuff. Since 3 months I have a lot of pain and stiffness, and I lost all my power in my leg. Thank you for this. I just got my first injection today and didn't really get any postcare instructions
Hope you will feel better 🙏
This video is Outstanding!

Excellent video and advice. You are very sharp and good at giving key points and positive motivation to explore this option. Best from London. Subscribed!!
Glad it was helpful!
Hí,
How much does an injection cost? Thank you
@@evaudvardy4187 This is highly country dependent.
This is great information been receiving the injections doctors didn't explain this thanks
Glad it was helpful! Yea I find that there is not much info out there about HA.
Same here, my Dr. didn't tell me what to expect. I am the day after the first injection in both knees and sore and stiff.
@@drob5664 Yea the stiffness can be very common for a few days. I actually made this video for my patients so they had something to reference at home!
I will get my first injection tomorrow,
Thank you doctor for clear explanation, you are awesome 👏
Greetings from California 😊
Best of luck! Glad this was helpful :)
God bless you. Pls promote. People don't do this much. It has to be accepted.
I got my 1st one April 11th and my 2nd one is on Monday April 22nd. I did really well with Bone on Bone. I also do Chypo and Red Light Therapy. These are all 4 your Core and your JOINTS. I have Beautiful Legs and No One Is Cuting My Knees😊 My Hip Replacement Went Very WELL😊😊

Thank you so much for this very informative and client friendly video.

I had shots in both of my knees from 2008-2016 now i have over 7yrs on both of my knee replacements
I got a single H. Acid injection. It resolved my osteoarthritis pain for almost 18 months. I’m going in for my next injection next month. I was never given any instructions for after.
That is quite amazing is lasted so well. Hopefully you found this video helpful!
Great vid. Thanks for posting.
Thanks. Glad you found it helpful!
Interesting video - I received my last shot today. My second I had a lot of fluid in the knee. I was told to take it easy so I was surprised I got fluid. After my second shot I decided to rest more - so today they did tell me that I had a little of fluid but not enough to get out. I did rest a lot and only walked if I needed to. My aftercare was just too rest And take it easy. I did workout yesterday and did a whole hour on the arc trainer but in 3 rounds of 20 minutes. They did tell me that I should be feeling more of the effect in 3 weeks from now since it really starts to work 6 weeks after the first shot. I did 3 shots of Euflexxa. He did tell me I should be able to get back to running again. So I’m hoping it works
Hope it helps. The three shot protocol is quite effective as well.
Thank you for this because my drs assistant that administers the shot is giving a lot of misinformation
Thanks I’m glad it helped!
Thank you for all the information. You are super smart and super beautiful ! Have nice safe days! 🌞
Great presentation, thank you.
Thank you!
❤❤❤❤ thanks a million can't wait to try it very informative
You’re welcome!
(my idea)
I am an active 89 year old. My only health problem is MUCHO arthritis. I am very impressed with this new clinic. I feel the PT is one of the reasons I am doing so much better at this time. I am curious to why such different results and how much longevity I will experience with the new clinic.
That's my story!
That’s amazing. Protocols can vary clinic to clinic. I’m glad it’s working for you and you are getting a great response.
I just had both of my knees done today and they hurt so bad a couple of hours afterwards! It feels like my arthritis on steroids! I can barely walk and have to use a walker to get around. Each step and even laying stationary is excruciatingly painful! I am hoping that this is the storm before the peace.
I'm only 28 and i just had one of my knees done today after I had torn my medial meniscus 2 years ago and I'm feeling the exact same way
@@Thehollowone22 what's even worse is that it didn't even really work. I still have bad pain in both knees
@Ms_Mia357 that is so shitty.. I'm sorry to hear that. I wish you the best in healing. I know it's far from easy.
Pain is not typically this bad in people post injection, I would encourage you to follow up with your provider. Things like the injection technique and approach also matter. However, this requires an in person assessment for a proper exam.
How did you do after the first day
I am thinking of getting it, this video is so informative! I will do it! thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
I play a lot of sports and I have a basketball tournament this July. Should I get it right away or should I wait a little? Is it gonna help me play the way I was if I get the injection? I also had prior knee surgery in 2016. Thank you so much!@@SonamMD
Thanks doc. For your important advice.☘️👍🌞
All sounds good and correct. My Dr didn't say anything special after injection even when asked lol.
I have not found a doctor in Hong Kong who is sufficient caring and willing to share these information, hence my reluctance to embark on HA injection🥲
I’m glad I found it helpful through your very informative explanation, Dr. Sonam.😊
Thank you. Glad you found it helpful.
Just recently diagnosed with arthritis in both knees my doctor doesn’t recommend this he says it doesn’t work, all he told me was to take Tylenol if needed, not at all happy, he is a younger person so he should be up to date on the newer procedures
No treatment is 100% effective. But this one is my favorite go as my first line.
Did it help you
Had a HA injection today after a year of PFP post ACL reconstruction. Thankyou for this really informative video
Glad it was helpful!
Did it help
Is it alright to use Red Light therapy after 7 days?
New subs here! My acl is diffusely hyperintense and thickend and mucoid degeneration of my acl.
Thanks for your support!
Ha topical cream will likely be beneficial for the skin but unlikely penetrate the joint.
@@SonamMD 👍🏻
Thank you for this video. It was easy to understand and made me feel hopeful and at ease for my injection. I’m at a moderate to severe level of arthritis in my knees and not qualified for replacement at my age. So the shots are my last hope as of now. Looking into what to expect and how to do post care as best as possible. Thank you again!
Glad you found it helpful.
Getting ready to have this done. Thank you for this information.
Best of luck!
Hi, Dr.
It still could potentially work. Just because one had cortisone earlier does not prevent them from trying HA.
@@SonamMD thank you for your reply.
Is this injection OK for older people with joints that are more worn?
Yes. It just means it may not be as effective for as long
I still work full time , it sounds like ill need to take a few days off as Im a rural mail carrier. Standing for 2-3 hours and getting in and out of the mail truck to deliver packages . Long 9 hour route. My knees are hurting everyday , I take tylenol all the time , it just takes the edge off.
Yea with that kind of physical work I do recommend my patients booking this around some days off to give them time to recover.
Are these injections good for bone to bone hip arthritis for a 66 year old?
You can still give them a go. I've had patients with severe bone on bone OA respond to Ha. However it is more effective for mild/mod OA.
@@SonamMD
Thank you kindly for your response!
@@rainbowlove5391 Good luck!
Is it necessary to do therapy after the injections?
@@SonamMD Thanks for explanation 👍
Thank you so much for your awesome video! In your experience is the platelet therapy as effective as the HA therapy for osteoarthritis?
I find that sometimes they can be equally as effective. Also in many patients, one may work better than the other. In these cases, it is not uncommon for me to try both.
Am i supposento wear knee caps after the injection. If yes then how many days later .. plz reply 🙏
If I had legament tear acl so can I take that injection? And can I its helpful for me... because of I am a sports person and that I need and your suggestion very helpful for me...my international tournament is coming... please reply
Which HA product do you use for your patients?
Monovisc/Durolane/Orthovisc/Cingal are just a few that I will use. Each country has different brands available.
Thank you for this. I had my first injection today and was shocked at my overall reaction.
Glad it helped!
Thank you so much very good information
I got last week gel injection so Like to know all about stuff ❤
Glad it was helpful!
I got my 1st Ostenil last week. They said I need 2 more jabs spaced 2 & 6 weeks apart. Is it Ok to delay this to after a month?
I would encourage you to follow up with the provider who gave you the injection. this is something that will require individualized advice.
Hi. I just got my HA shot last night
Its sore, a little swollen, and less of range of motion. Is this normal for the first 48hrs?
Hello, Dr. Sonam, thank you for the vedio, which is very helpful. What brand of HA do you recomend please?
You specifically mentioned young, what about 80+ year old who had hyaluronic acid injection, does your video cover , include, apply to these age bracket? Does your advice still applies to this age
Yes it can apply across various ages.
@@SonamMD thanks doc😀 appreciate it.
Very Very good information 👍 ❤

Hello, amazing & helpful video, thank you! A couple of questions, please:
Shoulder relief?
Depends on the diagnosis. Mainly this would be used for shoulder arthritis.
Great Channel. THANKS for the great content.
Glad you enjoy it!
Can you cover Prolotherapy treatment.
Which is better ,this or HA?
Prolo is more akin to prp however there is also less evidence for it.

Can this injection be used in other parts of the body like lower back?
This injection is not used in the back. Usually PRP Cortisone would be considered in those areas.
Thanks for te video! I had a cartilage repair surgery, but after 7 months I forgot all about it and was moving very heavy stuff. Since 3 months I have a lot of pain and stiffness, and I lost all my power in my leg. I think an injection is the next step but I’m not sure which one as I see so many different stories on the internet.
The internet can be a great resource for many things. But I find often things can also get lost when it comes to medical information. It’s always worth consulting with your healthcare provider first and then making the decision. At that point, you have all the information.
@@SonamMD Thank you!
Can older patients receive these injections
There is no age limit so I always discuss this in context of their medical history
I've had over 15 knee injections. It's very little pain. The needle might look long but the guage is so thin you barely feel it.
