I saw this in the cinema in Spain September 2016 - it was quite wonderful even though the sound was not loud enough. I was amazed by the change in JK in 3 years. Here you can see every nuance of his expression & appreciate his skills - so different today where he hides behind a beard.
Une superbe représentation qui nous a prouvé qu'avec peu de moyens pour la mise en scène, celle-ci pouvait être très belle et avec des interprètes de cette trempe !!!
Jonas Kaufmann does what works for him... And Damn does it work for him. Technique is far from an exact art, more a mish-mash of trial and error... I'd like to see any of the negative commenters here stand up and sing like that. I guarantee you they can't. Again, what works for one singer will not necessarily work for another. At the end of the day the individual is the one who has to stand and sing, not the technical critics.
Maxwell McGrath Yeah, and sings like 300 days a year, LOL. If he had all the problems they claim he has, he would be long forgotten by now :)). They were actually a very good vocal match here, and i definitely hear the difference between tenor and baritone, and the match in timbre does not hurt at all. At least he doesn't sound like his throat is about to turn inside out and rip through his mouth and he's about to gag or throw up, like a lot of other tenors have throughout history, probably due to singing on the edge of their ability. He almost never does. There's always reserve. And just when you think he will never take that hight note, he always does, and surprisingly it usually sounds even better than the note right before it, which you thought was as good as it'll get. He knows what he's doing and is in control of the musical line! Always! And he has the technical ability to do any embellishment exactly when written, which you can't say for all of the 'great ones' of old that everyone now legendizes in their imaginations, like Corelli, who often passed on that stuff, but yeah, knew how to place his voice so it sounded like his guts were being turned inside out. Ugh.. hate that gagging sound. Kaufmann never, always the noble in-control quality to his sound. A very sound and secure technique indeed.
ArtShouldBeBeautiful Please STFU...you sound patently stupid and have no idea what the hell you're talking about. You like modern day rubbish wannabe opera singers and loath the best there ever was??? Hahahahha...very well then...I can't argue against what you consider beautiful and desirable. After all, flies love the taste of shit in their mouth, and so do you.
Ruffiano Madness Well, at least Domingo seems to disagree, I heard him calling Kaufmann one of the greatest tenors alive. So did my professor for classical singing by the way, and no offense, but I find them both just a bit more trustworthy than random TH-cam comments.
Now I need to decided which is the greatest pairing - this with Kaufmann and Hampson, or the Paris one with Kaufmann and Tezier (the French version).......maybe they are equal!!

For "sabaproject": Good technique doesn't help Hampson to have darker voice. I argue that he has to light voice (or Kaufmann too dark) to blend really well together.
It's a matter of taste, but I think it's sort of interesting to hear this sung by two voices that -- you're right -- don't really blend. I'm used to the Bjoerling/Merrill recording where it's one gorgeous flood of sound, but in this clip I'm hearing the baritone line thrown into relief -- less beautiful of course, but an interesting new perspective on the music.

I agree SABA. Kaufmann has a nice dark voice, a poor art of singing (Domingo's fellow) and,,, the most important today: he is a handsome guy. Listen to Bergonzi in this duet with Capucilli. This is an artist.
I wrote just about colours of their voices and how well / not well they blend. Hampsons's voice don't match really well with Kaufmann's and that's not the question of technique, which is probably questioned.
I think the best vocal match for Jonas is Ludovic Tézier (they also have amazing chemistry). One critic described them after the ROH Forza as blending like "coffee and cream".
