I agree. Jonas is certainly a tenor, but very baritonal. It is not the best match contast-wise. But I like it. If somebody says that DH can't sing Don Carlo, they are deaf. It is his signature role, he sang it three million times plus all concerts, galas and tributes. Heck, he won Cardiff with it!!!

How extraordinary beautiful! Thank you! I Saw Jonas Kaufmann a few days ago singing this duet with Thomas Hampson and it was breathtaking! (Salzburger Festspiele 2013)
I was there when Hvorostovsky won the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World with this and consider it the finest baritone sound I have ever encountered in live performance. I would go as far as to say he has been THE outstanding Italianate baritone of my life time (even including the wonderful, irreplaceable Tito Gobbi). Kaufmann is the equivalent among tenors and to hear these two together is beyond what we might dream of in human operatic art. The only fault I can find is that the microphone makes Kaufmann sound a bit under-powered next to H. This may be true, but the mikes could have adjusted. But this is a tiny nit pick. Jonas still has plenty of voice!
Where and when did you hear him? After Cardiff I heard him again in Geneva both in recital and in the opera house. On both occasions he was electrifying and his concert encore of "Cortigiani!" was huge in every sense.
For the Cardiff Singer I was fairly close but what struck one was the sheer size of the voice (as well as the extraordinary beauty and fabulous technique) compared with the other finalists, one of whom was the lovely Monica Groop. For the Geneva performances we were near the back. Perhaps his vocal stamina has diminished seriously since 2000 ( I think I last heard him live around 2003) though his continued presence at the Met would suggest that he still has what is needed for that excessively large house.
Now that San Francisco Opera has slipped into only hiring regional grade casts I expect to never have the opportunity to hear either of them live, But judging only by recordings like this one. These two as good as any who have ever sung - ever. I cite this on the authority of the greatest opera authority I know of - me.
A stunning example of great singing from both artists; my only complaint is that it is in the wrong language. Even so with such great artistry I will overlook the language issue
