The Philosophical Roots of Wokeism with Bishop Robert Barron

  • This week, we’re bringing you one of the plenary lectures from this year’s Acton University, featuring Bishop Robert Barron speaking on “The Philosophical Roots of Wokeism.”
"Wokeism” is arguably the most influential public philosophy in our country today. It has worked its way into the minds and hearts of our young people, into the world of entertainment, and into the boardrooms of powerful corporations. But what is it precisely, and where did it come from? I will argue in my presentation that “wokeism” is a popularization of critical theory, a farrago of ideas coming out of the French and German academies in the mid-twentieth century. Until we understand its origins in the thinking of Adorno, Horkheimer, Derrida, Marcuse, and Foucault, we will not know how critically to engage this dangerous philosophy.

Thanks for your lecture on the philosophical roots of Wokism. This lecture has given me the reassurance that I needed after writing a letter to the CEO of BBC news and current affairs expressing my dismay that the BBC lends support by way of pandering to or accommodating "special interest " groups. This decision to support these "special interest " groups is leading to dimension in our public institutions. If the BBC continues to criticise our public institutions with such antagonism, then the BBC will be responsible in the medium to long term, the seeds of an anarchic state. God bless you Bishop Robert Barron. Kind regards Valerio Critelli

Yes, but although I agree with his portrayal of the philosophers he claims have been popularized (though the Marxist critical theorists disagree with Derrida and Foucault in fundamental matters) and I share his criticism of them, and though I love Catholic social teaching, there was one thing that badly missed. In his zest to criticize the Left, he missed the obvious application of the thought he was criticizing to the MAGA right. Loving power over truth, love, justice; giving alternative realities to support their power agenda. That is pure Foucault. In the present context to focus this philosophical criticism only on the Left is dishonest or blind. So make the connection to Left and Right, and I agree with you. Catholics should stand athwart Trumpism just as strongly as Wokism. Both are terrible, but I find woke folk typically more decent in practice than the radical Right.

He's an esoteric religious man, so his reasoning is almost completely opaque to the common man. But he promises a purge, and that is the appeal to the faithful, that they will be allowed to sin in the worst way against outsiders. So no, that's why we keep church and state separate. And prior history shows us the bloody results of a priests hierarchical desire justifying his murderous desire.... so that's the only substance he transmits to his flock.

That’s it it’s putting words of love and justice, as the definition of the action of what Black Lives Matter does. I think actions are more important than words I think, actions to find themselves.
I think when everyone was mortified as we watched a black man murdered in our living room, we all had to stand together and say no. And for you to call that Marxism, because they are not defining it with words is doing a disservice.

Well done from beginning to end. I really liked the Catholic teaching V Marxist philosophy…. exact opposites… and the reflections on power differences between Gods supreme power and Marx or the individual wanting the supreme power. From a simpleton’s point of view…. God with supreme power.. allows the Christian individual to say yes or no…. whereas the Marxist wants to be the supreme power ruler… but his followers do NOT have the freedom to choose yes or no… the individual must submit to the all powerful Marxist.
The other big difference, where God teaches justice and love…. Marx teaches ‘the end justifies the means’ and hate….opposites.♥️✝️

Well done, Bishop! As I've heard, you have been appointed to represent the US Church at the Synod on synodality in Rome. May the Holy Ghost guide your steps and interventions. I hope you will voice your (orthodox) insights clearly and strongly when they attack the foundations of Catholic teaching. (Notice that I didn't write 'if ...' .)

    • @tuckersabath2099
      @tuckersabath2099 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

You didn't write "if", so I'll try to state this gently. In questioning institutional racism, folks frequently get accused of attacking. And questioning is not the same as being attacked, that's a delusion common among bigots. Like when resisting arrest is the only change, you NEED to ask why was there an arrest to begin with? So while I might expect bigotry in some places, I need to practice optimism and restraint lest I be the one acting with prejudice. I hope that thought is helpful for you. Also understand that the level of intolerance from some institutions necessities a response, examples including: Catholic Orthodoxy withholding non Catholics rights as citizens or even humans.... That's impossible not to question. Don't pretend to be the victim of the people who you would oppress.

12:47 💥 Wokeism incorporates an antagonistic social theory, emphasizing struggles between oppressed and oppressor groups.
17:57 🏛️ Wokeism views society through substructure and superstructure, where everything protects and defends the substructure of oppression.

26:08 💪 Power is the central category in critical theory and wokeism, influencing all aspects of society and shaping its dynamics.

38:01 🔄 Caution against making secondary values like diversity, equity, and inclusion primary, instead valuing justice and love.
44:27 🎨 Appeal to the Beautiful as a way to engage people and potentially counter relativism through forms of beauty.
46:02 🌐 Social media's dual nature: a powerful tool for spreading positive messages globally, but also bearing dark sides and challenges.

Just Brilliant. As someone who went to a famous left wing university , LSE , in the 70s , Ive had a ringside seat to all this. I was at university when the Marxist realised they could not bring about revolution in the sophisticated , affluent West and so emerged the influence of Gramsci and Rudi Dutschke , infiltrate the institutions at all levels and take over the capitalist state. I experienced this in my lifetime at first hand as former Marxist student colleagues rose up in education , my profession , and implemented their ideology. With hindsight they poisoned the minds of the young. I remained Catholic and opposed.
As Pope Benedict said , Quote . Charity to all under the unambiguous standard of the cross. Martyrdom and persecution if need be before accommodation. Unquote.

The first Q&A Barron says he agrees with Woke when presented with the definition of it. But otherwise wanted to say it was "cultural marxism" which is bogus. People can realize there is oppression without any connection to Marx, Marxism, or "cultural Marxism" etc.

Woke is an indigenous term from the community of African Americans. It's origin is in the speeches of Martin Luther King where he tells people to be awake to the prejudices, 2:42 injustices, race in class separations. It is always been a term that African Americans understood well because of Martin Luther King Jr. But two white governors, Florida and Texas, decided to make fun of it and treated as a joke and something to hate. Pure racist comments. The same governors who use immigrants as pawns. The same governors who want to ban their version of the right books in public libraries.

I suspect that Barron doesn't fundamentally oppose Descartes but is saying that the self-centric idea has mutated and gone too far. And also, my interpretation is that "my thinking" is the arbiter of truth as far as I can experience (because of my flawed existence apart from God), but I recognise that Truth belongs to God. Either alternative is dangerous:
My thinking as the sole arbiter of truth: leads to subjectivism, wokeism etc.
God as the sole arbiter of truth (not recognising that we can only see things through the lens of our own thinking): leads to uncriticality and often a legalistic understanding of Christian doctrine, imposing one's view on others.

Yes, let me just see as I work my 16 hours a day my copy of Theodore Adorno writings in German.
Bishop, we grew up Catholic Midwestern, Irish German Catholic I transported to California. I remember when I would stay home from school sick or not go to church and on Sunday watch debates between a rabbi a protestant Reverend and a Catholic priest, thinking “that reverence seems to miss the question, and can only respond to it by waving his hands and screaming”
We were the result of Vatican two not being fully taught by the priest how to deliver it.
I had mentioned to you that when I was 17 I had picked up Thomas Aquinas, and tried to read his book, but I ended up reading the dictionary instead
If you want to reach the woke, ism age group , you need to walk with them not talk at them.
It’s wonderful that you are writing books for the publishing company but what are you doing to the flock?

Correct - wokeism is as what I believe Martin Luther King would say, Christ centered
It is love and it is justice.
But I see your point if you take Christ out of the center wokeism fails.

This was it, in a nutshell. We can choose one of two axioms: 1) Baron's summary of Aquinas, which is (I think) an ascending nurturing, transcend and include growth holoarchy structured on The Good The True, and The Beautiful toward the Kingdom of God, (see Ken Wilber Integral Theory) or 2) A recklessly indulgent and cynical flatland Gnosticism of resentment, envy, and suspicion that sees nurturing holoarchies and God as oppresive power hierarchies to be torn down. Historically, this always results in death, starvation, and chaos. Also, the latter can only grow by parasitizing on the generosity of the former. The ultimate parasite being the Marxist university professor and the metastasizing Woke administrative class it begets.

Is it really consistent with Catholic commitment to the dignity of the individual to call anyone a parasite, no matter how much with disagree with them or how terrible we think their actions? I really worry about this kind of language (and worry when it is used by those on other parts of the political spectrum too)

The absolute values of justice and love are threatened today in America. EX-president Trump calls President Biden's administration WOKE. I beg the Catholics to vote for Justice and Love in November--vote for Biden- and save the battle against diversity equity and inclusion for after we save the country from autocracy. Put absolute values before secundum quid. Circumstances demand it

It's sad that most educated people in the world, the average" joe", has at least a college level education, yet only a kindergarten religious education. The other way to look at it ... why not investigate the faith, it might be your life insurance and I do not mean 100 years but eternity with your love ones and true happiness. Seems worthwhile.

Picture that will not post shows a child on the left was old enough to pick cotton and the child on the right was old enough to attend Klan rallies, then today's children are old enough to learn about both of these and how they've led us to where we are today.

i certainly agree with the analysis. however, i cannot help but to notate that not if but when the vatican approves in pastoral care the blessings of same sex partners as some sort of gift from God; that this same vatican feeds into the same wokeness of which Bishop Barren speaks about. if repentance is no more than anything goes and anything or any relationship can be blessed, what then is striving for the narrow road into heaven as Jesus has said to do? when the priest blesses the people at the conclusion of the Mass, in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, is this not the blessing of the people of God who have come with contrite hearts to change from the sins guilty in a heart into a heart and soul which is guided by the Holy Spirit. The woke culture we live in is the same wokeness of the past which defy the laws of God as well as the Spirit of these same laws. the pope, the cardinals, the bishops the priests the deacons cannot separate doctrine from pastoral care. they can never do this unless they violate the very law of God and the Holy Spirit which guides the church. i am seeing a lot of “i will do it my way”. from the the vatican prelates and not what is taught by Jesus the Christ. Jesus would never go against His Father’s laws as he fulfills them completely; so why would any of the elites in the vatican think they can pastorally bless same sex relationships. then the drag queens in their partnerships will ask this as well as the alphabet schizophrenia of the gay pride agenda movement. that would be a travesty as well as a sad rendition to giving into the woke movement of the day which is so full of itself and its propaganda.

The mere fact that antiquated terms such as your Excellency is still applied to bishops carries with it all of the history of the cozy relationship existing between the highest representatives of the Catholic Church and the privileged and royalist structures that dominated European society even into the 21st century. Is it surprising then to hear a lecture on the vanity of wokeism and the value placed upon remaining asleep? A smattering of Latin and French terms to give an intellectual veneer is inadequate to conceal and camouflage or rather threadbare discussion of critical theory and the postmodern philosophers.

I wish Father Baron would speak in clear English in stead of introducing a Latin word, defining it, and thereafter using it in place of the English word. We are not Latin scholars. Telling us what a word means doesn't instantly allow us to understand it in sentences. Please use English. It didn't get much out of this due to the use of extraordinary amount of Latin words used.

Hi Bishop Barron, I love listening to you, but this lecture didn’t come across very well. I think starting with the fundamental principles of Christianity and then applying them to wokeism - instead of the other way around - would have been more effective. Also, please address wokeism in the common, cultural sense as most people understand and use it (awareness of discrimination) because no one except maybe philosophers actually think of Descartes and wokeism in the same sentence. I am concerned that folks might listen to this and think it’s okay to ignore discrimination and oppression. Thank you.

Excellent analysis but I question some of it re Marx. Throughout history people have been oppressed by the rich and powerful eg slavery, Nazis as extreme examples of the terrible consequences for the powerless. Throughout history powerful organisations such as the monarchy, the state have backed these powers intrinsically linked to capital to protect the elite and other institutions. They are inseperable. And people have been kept down and indoctrinated to accept their fate.
    The roots of
Socialism was to reverse that power balance, which aligns with Christian principles. Of course socialist states and capitalism have been mismanaged by corruption.
I don't think Bishop Barron really addressed this.
Life is not black and white and recognising the good and bad in everything is much more realistic and helps avoid polarized views
