Religion and the Opening Up of the Mind | Bishop Robert Barron | Talks at Google

  • Bishop Robert Barron speaks at Google HQ about religion and the opening up of the mind. Bishop Barron is the founder of Word on Fire Catholic Ministries and Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Bishop Barron is a #1 Amazon bestselling author and has published numerous books, essays, and articles on theology and the spiritual life, in addition to his regular TH-cam videos (@wordonfirevideo).
Bishop Barron discusses how our minds restlessly seek, and how religion, at its best, never shuts down the mind, but opens it up. He explores the nature of "beatitudo", following the philosophy of Thomas Aquinas to conclude that wealth, power, pleasure, and honor will never satisfy, but only God can satisfy the infinite desires of our hearts.

Thank you, Bishop Barron. I sit here with tears in my eyes, because I sent this to my son, who was pulled away from his faith in his early teens. He said that he really liked it and how intelligent you are. He has not listened or watched anything before. Today's Lenten Gospel reflection about praying again and again (St. Augustine... don't get me started on the irony of my name being Monica). I can't wait to come back and tell you that my son has come Home.

Listen to Fulton Sheen and drop Barron. This is a smoke screen.
He is a false prophet. When a Catholic Priest talks for an hour and doesn’t mention Jesus Christ once, there is your over arching clue. He didn’t tell these people how to save their soul and that is his only goal in life, period. That is why Google had him speak. He preaches a one world Generic God. Not Jesus Christ the savior of the world. He presents nothing of merit here. This Bishop believes and preaches all soul’s go to heaven and there is no hell. There is heaven and a hell and very few soul’s make it to heaven. Narrow is the gate. Many are called and a few chosen. Go to Dr. Taylor Marshall’s TH-cam Channel to get the truth. If you desire to get into heaven and not burn in the fire’s of hell.

“How do we let God move into our lives? “Great question!
“We all fall in love with Jesus in a different way” because we are all so different. So true!
I had a life changing encounter with God at 18 and I asked myself, what did I do to let that happen. I figured out that 3 things had mattered.
1/ I acknowledged the fact that I was missing something in my life, I had a deep desire for more. I wanted something to change in my life but I didn’t know what.
2/ I made a leap of faith and spoke to God and told Him : “I don’t know if you care about me, but if you do, show me.”
3/ I made myself available from time to time by leaving my noisy life behind and just spending time in silent.
Encountering God was the best thing that happened to me in my life. It gave me a deep sense of happiness and fulfillment. Try encountering God, you won’t be disappointed!

I never knew about this Chesterton quote, but I have always felt that way,...If there truly were no God, there would be no Atheists. Why would you have define yourself as someone who doesn't believe in something that is not there? I have always felt that people who label themselves as "Atheists" are simply those who deep down sense that God is real, but don't want there to be a God, thus spend the rest of their lives trying to convince themselves that there is no such thing as God. Our eternal quest to be unconditionally happy (at peace, etc;) The very reason we all have this eternal desire within us is because of how God made us. I really appreciated that he mentioned instead of going to great effort to extinguish that "flame" (ie Buddhism) , but rather that we embrace it and direct it towards the place it was meant to be,...getting God inside of us, so we can thus give God to others.
When God created, he made all creatures according to their own kind, the fish, the birds, the cattle etc; according to their own kind. However, when God made man He did not make man according to man's own kind, rather God made man in the image and likeness of...God. In other words according to God-kind. The bible also tells us that man is a "vessel". So, we are a vessel, made in the image and likeness of...God. It is no wonder that man is unsatisfied with attempting to achieve unconditional happiness with worldly things...wealth, power, etc, that only offer us a temporary "thrill". Yes, we are made, designed, formed, shaped, meant, to have God inside our vessel. We spend our lives trying to cram all sorts of other things in there,....but only God is a perfect fit. Just as a glove is a container in the shape and form of a hand, and outwardly looks like a hand,..if it does not have the hand inside of it, it has no real purpose, function, or expression of life. If the glove could speak it would say it is not satisfied until someone puts a hand inside and fills it up. We are in the shape and form of God. Without God inside of us, we do not have proper purpose, function, or life.
Jesus said...."I AM the Life." ..."I am the bread of Life....he who eats Me (takes me in) shall live because of Me,..the words I speak are spirit and life." This in fact is how we actually get God inside of us. God came to us in the from of humanity in the man Jesus. When Jesus went to the cross, He not only removed the barrier of sin in our lives, but He also resurrected becoming the "life giving Spirit" so He could get inside of us (joining THE Spirit, with our spirit.) THIS is how we come into that joining of ourselves and God. This is how our vessel, made in that image and likeness of God becomes filled and fulfilled,...and leads to unconditional contentment, fulfilled purpose, and proper function.

This sort of philosophical analysis was no where to be seen when I went to Catholic school twenty years ago. Just by naming something (beatitudo) helps us to realise what is the greatest desire of our heart. It also gives a certain concreteness to our purpose in life. Thank you once again Bishop Barron for your wise revelations.

I think justice for victims of child abuse is a better cure than the bloviations of one shameless theologian. An absurd amount of tithing money is going to protecting Christians from any consequences for their actions, and downplaying the harm they caused.

Bishop Barron at his best and you have to know in a somewhat hostile environment. At the very least in a room full of ultra-educated skeptics Buddhists, Hindus, New Agers, Protestants etc. He closes with Thomas Aquinas's argument for God's existence. Priceless!! There are a lot of folks AT Google that then went back to their desks and GOOGLED Aquinas and his argument for the existence of God which will cause a curiosity which will cause further intellectual inquiry which will lead to careful consideration which will be followed by conscious contemplation and even debate which will then lead to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. This guy should be our next Pope. The world would be Catholic as Christ intended. (Jn. 17-21)

    • @psobbtutorials6792
      @psobbtutorials6792 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Thomas Aquinas arguments for god doesn't hold any validity in a scientific sense and in addition appeals to fallacies (special pleading) making them invaluable in debates. These people are there to learn about other peoples believes. Nothing is in it's entirety true or false, that also goes for religion. So naturally, there is a lot of wisdom in any religion meaning there is also a lot to be learned by non religious people.

Bishop explains the urge of finite spirit. What is spirit? Spirit is combination of two faculties i.e. the intellect and the will. The intellect thinks to have thoughts to learn truth and the will seeks satisfaction. With will we love and with intellect we think. There is a difference between God who is spirit and soul which is a spirit. Man and angel are finite spirit and God is infinite spirit. GOD has infinite intellect and infinite will. I love Bishop Barron.

I love this! Bishop Baron is so good at being excepting of all people. He says that every sinner including me would say this. He makes it clear that he is a sinner as well as you and me he’s not saying he’s better than us. And when he talks about other religions, he says what they might believe and he says yes we agree with that. He doesn’t pick fights over what we do not agree with, he only mentions what we agree with. It is so wonderful every time I listen to you, Bishop Baron!
