    Helpful, but I found that it's easier to remove and reinstall the starter via the front right wheel well. If you unfasten the heat shield (four 10mm bolts and take care not to damage the O2 sensor) it moves out of the way and the starter slides right out/in. Thanks though. This video was helpful and well narrated. I think you did a great job.

    Jim, thank you for this awesome video, because of it I was able to change out my starter with minimal headache, saving me a bunch of money and allowing me not to miss a day of work, with the added bonus of having the satisfaction of doing it myself. Knowing the steps to take and which bolts to remove first etc. helped me be successful in doing something for the first time when I didn't even know what a starter looked like! • @Carlton_Wilson

      Raymond Ledsome I had to go beneath to take out the starter bolts, but everything else can be done via the left front wheel well. There is a heat shield in the way, but it comes loose with just 4 10mm bolts. The starter comes out cleanly via the wheel well. Getting it out from beneath is trickyX10.

    Mine was super easy to remove and fit back in. Also, I removed the front right wheel for easier access to the clip. However, for guys below claiming you can remove the starter via the wheel well, this was NOT the case for my '02 6 cylinder. Perhaps the 4 cylinders you can do this but not for mine. All in all this was a great video. Thank you! Now on to spark plugs, cables, brakes, front shocks, valve cover gasket, etc.

      Assuming most people would rather have a functioning starter motor rather than a Flintstone's Push Start car - the manual transmission option in the XTerra adds a level of extra labour to the starter replacement as the steel and flexible lines to the slave cylinder are in the way of getting the starter out - it is albeit do-able.

    Great video saved me a lot of time. Already had a new batery knew it was not the battery. checked all the fuses and were good, then checked the neutral safety relay pin 3 for voltage when key was turmed and it was present. then jumppered pins 3 and 5 to see if it would start, no start no crank knew it was not the relay. Thats when I replaced the starter and your video was spot on, Thanks again

    hi everyone, i just watched this video because i was originally looking for the location of the starter, but i found interesting doing the test you did at the beginning of the video. The weird thing is that my 2001 Xterra didnt want to start and was doing that crank sound you mentioned so I thought it was the starter, then I turned on the headlights and to turn the key to start the engine and it worked, it started the engine, with the headlights on. I turned off the engine and tried again with headlights off, nothing happened, I did it with headlights on for a second time and worked again. We even ran the vehicule for like 3-4 minutes without problems just to check and no problems, but I know there must be something wrong there. Is there anything else I should check before going to a professional?

    • @salute31
      @salute31 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      jimthecarguy yeah I checked the cables to see if they were loose and I think they were because of recent job on the vehicle. I decided to replace the spark plugs because it was time anyways I'll continue to observe if there's any loss in power or failure to start. thanks for the advice.

    Hey, Jim. Thanks for posting this video. I was able to do this job on my own thanks to your instruction. My 03 Xterra was turning over beautifully for a couple months after I replaced the bad starter. Then, I noticed a that the new starter started to lag a little, and not engage as easily. After three months, the new starter has burned out. I did have a bit of a bad connection with my positive cable to my positive terminal post, and I also have some oil leaking onto the starter. It looks like this Xterra in the video has a bit of oil on the starter too. What do you think caused my new starter to burn out?

    • @jimthecarguy
      @jimthecarguy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The oil leaking on the starter is most likely the problem.

    • @joedrums8578
      @joedrums8578 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you both for the response. I also had a bad connection on my battery. The positive terminal post connection was loose, and I would sometimes have no power until I jostled with it to regain the connection. I replaced the positive connector and it has made a huge difference. I will be cleaning the connections on the starter soon, but so think some voltage issues from the battery connection caused a big issue.
