    Been a Nissan tech for many years. It’s not necessary to replace these v.c. gaskets. Take a long Phillips screwdriver and your going to find that the hold down screws for the covers are loose. Snug them back down and your leaks will stop completely. Trust me, it works. It’s not necessary to remove the top plenum to replace the spark plugs. #6 is a pain but it’s doable on a cold engine.

      probably will work as you say for a short time only, eventually the VC gaskets will need replacement. In addition, the VC gasket bolts usually need replacing, they strip out very easy, along with the rubber washers for these bolts should be replaced.

      Christiana Weah Not pulling, do mean not accelerating ? There could be many malfunctions that can cause this problem. What's the mileage, what's the maintenance history, compression, ignition wires, fuel delivery problems - fuel pump, fuel filter clogged, Cat clogged, mis timed must be 10 + - degrees at idle warm engine, ignition coil/cam sensor. As you can see there's a huge # of issues that can cause acceleration issues, when was the last time your fuel injectors were cleaned or checked for fuel flow ? Please provide more info/history on your vehicle.

    I own a 2000 xterra 3.3 you CAN change all the plugs without removing that intake . Plug #6 is the worst but if you look at the firewall there's a notch out to go straight down on it . 9 inch wobble extension and your spark plug socket no problem.

    Had to change the motor in my 03 frontier 3.3L last year, What a PITA. Just changed the Vent valve due to a large EVAP leak. Got pending codes for crank and camshaft p0340 p0335 but runs good so we’ll see what happens. Pretty cool how the engine bay is identical with the xterras and the frontiers.

    Another common problem is the Distributor, the Cam sensor is housed inside the Distributor and it's an Optical Square Wave output generator, it generates 2 signals to the CPU, the CPU in turn analyzes these input signals and generates/controls the square wave output signal back to the Distributor to fire the ignition coil. After years of use, the Optical sensor needs maintenance, sometime the Optical disk inside the distributor needs to be cleaned due metal shavings from the Distributor bearings that clog the "windows" on this disk. This situation will cause an Ignition no start or drive ability problems. Also, the Thermistor that controls power to the AC compressor goes bad and causes AC compressor to cycle on/off incorrectly, the Thermistor is located in the evaporator coil box and needs to be replaced.

    Mainly for those watching this video then commenting they personally won't get an Xterra bc of what the common issues are. All makes and models have issues, even Toyota. And even common issues with certain makes and models, one can be so lucky to not have those common issues occur. Just like the people who drive them, nothing is perfect. I currently own a 93 240sx and 04 Xterra, previous years, owned 80 280zx and an 83 280zx, along with some Chevy models and a Ford (Chevy and Ford owned not by choice, were given as hand me down seconds from family, I'm a diehard Nissan fan, self taught mechanic, after a motorcycle accident put me on disability at a young age, had to get into something with my time). I have no complaints about any vehicle I owned, past and present. Even when there were things needing to be replaced, common problems or not, if anyone is familiar with the 240sx, timing chain replacements are the common issue, I've owned 2, an 89 hatchback 93 couple (current) not once have I had to replace the timing chain, until 2016 on my 93, after owning it for 13 years (purchased in 2003). My biggest problem with either was letting friends "borrow", that being my common mistake. As I type this, my 93 sits upon jackstands in my garage awaiting an engine rebuild (I've never had a need to do internal engine work therefore, I won't attempt doing a rebuild without a qualified or knowledgeable person helping me, I've yet to have anyone step forward, not even the mechanic friend who put my car in its current condition. At 275,000 miles I shouldn't have allowed anyone to drive it, much less drive it for 3 months. Which brings me to sometimes a vehicles problem can be from lack of maintaining it, for those who think turning the key and pressing the accelerator and occasionally adding gas to the tank is what vehicle ownership is about. Absolutely nothing wrong with that as long as you at least have it regularly serviced by a trusted individual. BTW, Toyota is a very reputable manufacturer, I'm not knocking them or any other vehicles manufacture in any way. Overall, it's an individuals decision what they want to drive. I appreciate this video bc I own an Xterra but as I mentioned, all vehicles have to be repaired, parts replaced and yes, engines rebuilt at one point or another. Keeping up with the maintenance intervals is very important, especially engine maintenance, keeping the oil change regularly is a must, especially in older model vehicles as the newer vehicles today have been designed for driving more miles before an oil change, using full synthetic oil (I recommend never began using synthetic oil in an older models that weren't designed for it or the manufacture doesn't suggest using it, doing so will create problems that can possibly lead to premature engine wear (I've personally done experiments in this and other areas of mechanical testing, before TH-cam existence or else I would have documented) Thanks for your video, much appreciated! As are viewer comments. For the individuals comment on a blinking CEL, what a coincidence, I'm having the same issue on my 04 Xterra. Pulled codes using my OBDll scanner. Codes are for knock sensor and cylinder 2 misfire. I'm doing complete tune up, only thing left is getting the new plug wires on (actually took it to dealership where another mechanic friend works, it needed suspension work so asked if he could go ahead change plugs and replace knock sensor while it's there, wires hadn't arrived in the mail yet but that is when I learned that #6 is hidden between firewall) Anyway, I've been driving it, I'll feel a misfire or like a rough idle but I'll be at cruising speed, around 55-60mph when this happens, instantly triggering a flashing CEL, that flashes around 10 to 12 times then goes off, engine runs smooth, then the cycle starts again. If I don't forget, I will post what eventually clears the CEL right here in comments. I'm now subscribed to this channel. If you read all of this comment, you're awesome! Hit the 👍even if you want to 👎 😊👍 it's the polite thing to do, otherwise keep your fingers to yourself 😂

    You have to remember that these 1st Gen Xterra are all getting really old now. ANY vehicle that old is going to have some problems. I am the original owner of my 2002 Xterra. I have 221K miles on it. Current problem is the ABS light comes on randomly, yet it doesn't seem to affect the ABS working. With the ABS light on, I tested the ABS on an icy road and it worked so I'm not sure what the problem is. I have cleaned the ABS sensors but that made no difference. I've had the knock sensor code almost forever and have completely ignored it. If you don't have the supercharger, the knock sensor code doesn't cause any problems. Radiator (original) cracked and started leaking about a year ago. I found a cheap knockoff on Amazon for $70. It has worked with no problems.

Now adays everything needs to be coded so a dealer can charge you. If coding is needed for anything then you can always buy iCarly or a generic bt OBD2 dongle and use a laptop to program it. when you remove the upper intake, it is bolted on the underside of it. its pretty easy. has a plastic gasket in there so if you are set on replacing it, you might need the gasket as well. i took mine out and cleaned it with carb cleaner and used liquid gasket. im not sure there was something wrong with it, but i had the intake off already so i did it. if you need to locate it, it looks like a square with a cylinder attached

    Question? My ABS light comes on and off and loss of power to the braking system with a crunching noise at 20mph plus. Also a clicking behind the dash when this happens. Have you seen or heard of this issue with the 03

    • @brother_dana
      @brother_dana 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had that problem and in my case the front wheel bearings needed to be replaced. Once that happened the ABS light never came on again. In your case it may be related to your braking system, but check your bearings just to be sure, which is easy to do by lifting it and checking for play in the wheels (google to see how).

    I have a 2002 Frontier @198kmi and a 2004 Xterra @190kmi. The Frontier is gahbage. Exhaust manifold bolts broke, causing me to breathe fumes at stop lights. Transmission has to warm up before drive will engage, and has to warm up even more for reverse to engage, and the knock sensor failed. Xterra leaks oil from the valve cover onto the exhaust manifold, giving me a wonderful bouquet of smells at the stop lights. Knock sensor failed, cat is failing, and I get a shudder on acceleration and going up hill which I assume is from a plugged up cat. I tried the lacquer thinner trick to no avail.

    On my 2002 Xterra I decided to tighten the bolts instead of paying 2800 at the auto shop for valve gasket replacement and that stoped the leak luckily. Why so expensive. You ask, because there is a coolant tube behind the manifold, that if you don't know about it,you will break it. The spark plugs are real B to replace, but as long as you don't have sausage hands it's doable without removing the manifold. The only thing I ended up giving it to auto shop to do is the for the control arms/bushings/ball joints. Lucky me,I manage to find the parts cheap on Amazon and a shop that works with your parts,if that wasn't the case... Yep...Almost 3000. 🤨

    That's weird, I still have my 2003 Frontier bought it brand spanking new and none of the issues that you've had with yours have come across my truck. I don't think they're common problems, you just had bad luck. The front rotors are easy to remove however I can see there's rust build-up on your Xterra in some areas on engine which can make it difficult to remove. When I changed the spark plugs I did not have to remove the manifold I was able to reach...the advantage of small hands lol.

      I have one as well and it's a complete piece of shit. I've replaced so many parts I can't remember half of them and this was a rust free vehicle when I bought it and it was well maintained with dealership records. Lets see...New radiator, core support, alternator, power steering pump, timing belt, water pump, cam seals, crank seal, thermostat, it eats up brakes, power window motors, EVAP system, inner/outer tie rods, sway bars/end links, A/C compressor, and that's just to name a few. There's no reason why you should have to remove the lockout hubs to do a front brake job. That two-piece rotor design is idiotic. Biggest piece of junk I've ever owned.

      @@warblebilly check your transmission fluid level or change your transmission fluid. Also check your coolant levels. Sounds like a transmission is slipping

    I have an 03 frontier won’t start won’t turn over new battery starter, completely new distributor, new ignition wires new alternor within a year don’t know why it won’t start still before it stopped running belts and everything was squealing loud and checked the other day the battery terminal got hot fast

      If your battery terminals are getting hot you eother have a really loose connections or drawing a lot of current from probably a short. I would check all your positive leads from your battery, check to make sure all the insulation is on the positive leads and there's no shorts. A short will more than likely cause your battery to heat up quickly.
