  • 60 lb vs 70 lb draw weight, does bumping up 10 lbs in draw weight really matter? How much speed do you gain and will it improve your bow hunting success?

    I'm shooting the Mathews Lift at 60 lbs. I'm 67 years old and have a 27" draw length. My hunting arrow is a Black Eagle X-Impact 350, 26" with the Iron Will Snyder Core System. Total weight is 414gr.

    I shoot my V3X at 60lbs and have for a while. My hunting arrow is 400 grains and at my 31" draw they're going 285 fps. I shot two deer with that setup last year and can tell you I'm more accurate with the lower poundage

    29 inch is at the bottom of the module that's why it's even more smoother then normal and it will be slower also
    The better comparison would be ar 28" at the top of the module at 60 and 70lbs

    Great comparison thanks for making it 👍
    I think the hunting world gets too caught up in the poundage speed thing though. If Paige Pearce can put down a giraffe with a 60# bow shooting 700 grain arrow at 215 fps (granted she's a world class archer) it should put to bed any argument you need a higher poundage bow (all you 80 & 90 lb bow hunters 😉) & that arrow placement is the most important thing to worry about.

    • @mash4fun
      @mash4fun 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I once saw a video of Ted Nuget harvesting a white tail with a 40# bow to prove that its the shot placement that is key

      @tullymahin 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree. Also, people like what they like, and I feel you should shoot whatever you're comfortable with. I do think we need to get away from the mindset that you NEED an 80 or 90 lb bow.

    • @sheldonhall5711
      @sheldonhall5711 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The reason for a higher poundage bow is for when the shot placement isn't perfect. Everyone that shoots a 60 says you don't need a 70, everyone that shots a 70 says you don't need an 80. Everyone that can't pull the higher wait says you don't need it, but the higher the poundage bow the higher the amount of energy in the arrow, which in turn will make it more effective against bone and more lethal. Like my great grandpa killed a whitetail with a .22, me saying that's why there's no reason for a bigger hunting rifle is a shallow arguement

      An higher poundage is better, if you can handle it, but only if you can be as accurate with the higher poundage as with a lower poundage.

    Shooting a 2024 Hoyt Alpha X 30. (from Extreme Outfitters). I shot the Mathews 29.5 Lift and the BowTech Carbon. All three were awesome bow's, however, the back wall on the Hoyt felt better to me and thats being very nit picky. The Carbon bows were incredible but more than I choose to spend.

    Shooting right behind the Garmin is fine, it's the distance from the target that you need to consider so it has enough time to pickup the arrow consistently. Ideally 20 yards from the target, but you can go as close as 10 yards for the speed of arrows without issues.

    Yall dont get caught up on draw weight. With 60 pound limbs you shoot a lighter spined arrow, which weighs less, and restores speed. Kinetic energy suffers, but just shoot fixed broadheads out of a well-tuned bow.

    My old 1994 oneida turned up was too much. Should of got in better shape. I had to back it off a full turn and recheck timing and sights. It still puts an arrow through a 6 inch round tree at 70 yards. Even passed on a shot in the yard at doe. Because too many moving parts. I have to draw it back real slow old guy hunting. Just sitting at picnic table no blind with deer looking at me. The traditional bow is easier to get a shoot when old guy hunting. Hunting can cost a lot but don't have too. I got a doe with my 3/4 pvc bow. I hunt my moms orchard, so deer are used to people. More like pets. I would love a shorter bow. That old oneida is 49". Makes it hard in blinds and sitting in flat bottom boats. If taking a longer shot the arch of the arrow matters. More speed less arch needed. I bow fish, deer hunt, and bear hunt.

  • @johnloughrey1636
    @johnloughrey1636 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    why- speed makes kinetic energy. You are not comparing apples to apples.at 70 pounds you are shooting a 430 grain arrow. you should be testing the 60 pound bow with a arrow that is 6.142 grains per pound just like the 70 pound bow. That would mean an arrow that is 368.5 grains, and 6.142 grains per pound. Both bows have more than enough kinetic energy to kill any North American animal at that arrow weight and the speed will be just about the same. What hunters really need to know is the kinetic energy. To hunt really big game in Africa it was mandatory to have at least a 100 pound recurve. That recure would not even come close to the energy a good 50 pound compound can produce today.
