I agree 100% Jane. It was indeed a difficult time all over Ireland throughout the entire decade of the eighties. But alas I was younger then, and my life was full of possibilities regardless of the state of the country.
You have to remember one thing the l. R. A of the 70s and the 80s were Ml5 operating under the guise of that name..That does not take away anything from the beauty of the song, and the sheer talent of clanad as a band. On the subject of the lrish, they will have to stand - up again, and take back what rightfully belongs to us since we are being ethnic cleansed and being replaced in our own country by our own rogue government. !
People wouldnt believe me if i said they are as clean in a live performance as they are here ( playback). Ive never seen better artists than these guys on stage. Magical!
One of the most atmospheric bands ever. Honestly, their voices, use of analog/digital sampling synths and recording techniques were so ahead of their time back in the 80's. I first got introduced to Clannad when watching Robin of Sherwood. The imagery and perfect music on that show were just incredible. When I then went searching for more of their music I was stunned to find many other classic tracks....like this one
They sing the pain, the beauty, the history of centuries of Irish history. That is why they are so incredible. She sings OUR story as a people. I hear centuries of sadness, conquest, famine, conflict, beauty and a national pride long denied and eclipsed as Her Sons and Daughters went abroad because they HAD to. Am I better off? Or, Were the ones that remained better off? What a beautiful people and they leave me stunned as to their smiles through centuries of pain. Let Her write with Wilde, Stoker, Behan, Joyce, Shaw and dance and sing for such a small country. I'm grateful I discovered Clannad in 1980.
This song is so hauntingly beautiful. As an American who was a child when the Good Friday Agreement was signed (I was born in 1988), I was too young to really understand what The Troubles were at the time and wasn't affected by them in any way, but I remember seeing a segment about the signing on the news. I remember how happy all the grownups around me were; the world seemed to collectively breathe a sigh of relief at one more violent conflict coming to an end (at least on paper). And this song poignantly captures all those mixed emotions: Sorrow at those who were needlessly lost, relief at light at the end of the tunnel, wondering uncertainly if the agreed-upon peace will hold. It speaks both to the specific conflict it's about, The Troubles, while also posing the timeless question of, "When will humanity learn to lay aside violence?" To all affected by The Troubles in northern Ireland, or any form of societal, political, or personal unrest in any country, my heart goes out to you. May you find peace both in this world and in your heart. Blessed be. )O(
I saw Maire Brennan with just 2 musicians backing her up, at a small venue in the Detroit area, about 10 years ago. Her voice was just as angelically-perfect as it was in Clannad's early times. Fantastic show.
Ethereal is sexy. This lady simply slays me. And her voice should be one of God's templates for future singers. This has to be one of the most beautiful pieces of music of the 20th century.
This remains the only song sung entirely in the Irish language to have been a hit in the UK charts. It got to no 5. Maybe it would have gone higher if Steve Wright hadn't talked all over it.
This is truly a great song sung with sadness of the troubled times. It is true that being Irish in the Uk during this time was hard, the Irish were brutalized for hundreds of years, and suffered insults from people who did not know anything about the great and most honorable history of Ireland, many of those cruel people lived in little houses yet most of the Irish =came from places that people would call paradise. Many times the Irish came to the aid of the British when they most needed even fought in their wars but received little or no thanks The Irish are great and proud people who greatly improved any country that they settled in
+George Hopper No SHIT.I first heard this song watching U2 Live at Red Rocks over 20 yrs ago and being from the US I'd never heard of Clannad. It's one of the first things I looked for when I got internet access lol.
I believe Enya is the #2 musician of all time to come out of Ireland...second to U2. Ironically enough, Enya used to sing with Clannad for a short time before branching out independently with Orinoco Flow. I believe Clannad was comprised of Enya's Uncles and other family members. So much talent in that family.
Crann Úll (Irish for apple tree) released in 1980.On "Gathering Mushrooms" they included their sister Enya on supporting vocals. In 1981 with the album Fuaim (pronounced foom, meaning sound), Enya became, for a short time, a full member of the band, adding keyboards and harmony vocals as well as lead vocals on two songs, "An tÚll" and "Buaireadh an Phósta". The following year Enya left to pursue her solo career
I was 16 when this song was played in the three part mini-series harrys game' and being a native from belfast it was a big deal back then' although some of the accents in the series were a bit dodgy' if i remember correctly Linda Robson from birds of a feather was in it' and hanged herself in a police cell. If you havnt seen the series you should download it' its still worth a watch compared to some movies that have been made about the troubles.
stay .mellow mate I'm pretty sure I got it from pirate bay some years back so have a wee look there, and another one you should look for is called you me and marly! Lol
I looked for it before, couldnt find it anywhere online whatsoever except for like one clip on youtube. I want to watch because it seems really good. Funny thing is, these days the theme is waaaaay more prevalant than Harrys Game itself. Its basically that famous theme from the tv series that hardly anyone has actually seen lol
Great song...me being half Polak and half Fenian , I can relate with both my people, all the struggles, sufferings, betrayals...but at the end we Made it !!! Polaks and Irish- same craziness, same humor, same freedom fighting spirits, enjoy laughs and drinks and being Catholics as well !!!! Oh boy am I proud !!!! Tiocfaidh ár lá
I thought this was originally released in 1989 NOT 1982? I remeber owning the cassette when my brother gave it to me in 1989. This is really one of the most amazing songs I have ever heard in my entire life...timeless work of art. Thanks for posting this
🕊 Beautiful. This music is so calming to listen to. It gives a peaceful feeling to the mind , so in turn must be beneficial, we need more like this ! 🕊
Watch the other night live in concert with a new band , moira's voice absolutely amazing and great live second time I saw her and it won't be the last 👌👌👌
Whoever is saying on here it was a movie and not a tv made show is simply wrong. It was a mini series shown on ITV (Channel 3 back when there was no Sky tv ha!). Wasn`t half bad too if I recall - I was like 12 when it first aired back in 1982 and being from Belfast myself I could relate somewhat.
Just been to se these amazing people at LIVERPOOL CATHEDRAL It was AWSOME the cathedral space and lights. THE MUSIC amazing soundsin that space as well. Their wonderful music , a magical show, got there autographs spoke to them and shook hands and thanked them for their music.AND..... SHE IS STILL A BEAUTIFUL looking IRISH LADY. I melted at her feet., held her hand for a short moment, after my daughter had her autograoh their first record she bought as a child. The love you could feel from her and her band, from their audiencw as well was a special moment I will never forget. MY ANCESTORS IRISH GENES WERE AGLOW.
Great Tune Used in The TV Program Harry's Game in yes 1982 About the Troubles in Northern Ireland ,Clannad also did Robin the Hooded man for the TV series Robin of Sherwood between 1983 to 1985,Great .And a Message to those who disliked,Dont know real Music Eh.
@MP34976 Um, the 1982 film, Harry's Game, was made by Yorkshire Television and starred Ray Lonnen.... It wasn't a particularly good film actually (though Ray Lonnen is always compelling). I remember watching it with a friend, and after the credits rolled, with the Clannad song she said 'well that music made a pretty crappy film seem much better than it was...'
This will be played at my fathers funeral today, just beautiful,
It was a difficult time to be Irish back then.I am as proud today to be Irish. We find ourselves in strange times. We shall get through.☘️
I agree 100% Jane. It was indeed a difficult time all over Ireland throughout the entire decade of the eighties. But alas I was younger then, and my life was full of possibilities regardless of the state of the country.
Been to Ireland just once and hope to go there again......the Irish are the friendliest and most hospitable people ever.......!!!!!
You have to remember one thing the l. R. Instead of British you now get trash from the Globe very well done enjoy like the rest of us
I am polish Prus. It is not easy. TEUTONIC GERMAN ROME ORDER HAD BEEN MURDERED OUR NATION SINCE 800 YEARS
One of the the most hypnotic songs I have ever had the privilege of hearing. It's only crime..it's too short.
People wouldnt believe me if i said they are as clean in a live performance as they are here ( playback). Ive never seen better artists than these guys on stage. Magical!
The whole family are gifted musicians, absolutely brilliant...
Yes!!!!
Must have been fun times at Brendan’s Pub with the sisters singing

same here, hearing this was haunting as hell back them, now i see it for what iwas, just great use of the human voice to heighten emotion

Glynis agreed
