I have permanent vestibular damage and I've found that wearing HARD soled shoes like Cowboy Boots or Dress shoes gives my feet better feedback for my balance than soft sole shoes. I've started walking on the balls of my feet as well and not letting my heel touch the ground while walking. When I stop then I allow my heel to touch the ground. I think of my feet like a triangle now. Balls of my feet for walking, like a sprinter does with no heel contact, rhe front of the foot is twice as wide as the heel. When walking with the HEEL making contact fist it's a single point of contact as you shift your weight forward. Using the Ball of the foot not only gives a wider contact to the ground but you have all of the Bones of the foot along with the ligaments and tendons responding to the muscles to help steady the leading step. I think of my HEEL a Kickstand to balance my foot when I'm not walking.
I use to wonder why I could walk backwards better than forward. Then I realized that when you walk backwards the Ball of the Foot and your toes make contact before your heel. The issue with Vestibular damage is the I NEED my Eyes to help and walking backwards takes that away. So, I tried the Ball of foot and no heel contact walking forward so I could use my eyes also and it made a world of difference in my balance while walking. The first two weeks my Calves did get sore and I would have to let my Heel hit first until my Calves had time rest. Now I can walk anywhere on just the balls of my feet.
Just thought I'd share my experience with others so they might have more options to better balance.
