blue plastic is only to protect stainless steel from rubbing and handling, the rims are plastic and are painted. The i3 wheels are skinny and lightweight , designed for its aerodynamics

Not gonna lie, the design is on point for the « still looks new years after release ». Definitely the rear lights too, almost replicated on the newer BMWi cars. It’s been 8 years and it still looks modern, design is aging pretty well.

When this car first came out, I found it weird looking. Now after seeing the latest BMW design orientation, I think it's a cool looking city car. Maybe the design was ahead of its time, for once.

it indeed is a very cool city car, but tbh i suggest that people get the range extended version when looking to buy one since you can really use that 2 cylinder "generator" in case you want to go on road trips, i find it very fascinating how it is possible to go on long roadtrips in this car with the generator if it does actually like charge the battery as you go along when its low

My Tesla Model S is my favorite of the cars my wife and I own, but the i3 is next. 2013 Benz E350 Cabriolet, 3rd. 2008 Lexus LS460, 4th. But I love all 4. The i3 with range extender is a brilliant little around the town car. Just brilliant! Quirky, dorky, different and brilliant!

6:16 That big wheel/narrow tire combo is actually very good for heavy snow. Narrower tires cut through the snow better to keep the tire surface in contact with the road :)

They’re cheap used and tax credits can get pretty high. $10,500 in state and federal tax credits in my state. Drive a Volt then an i3. This is a much nicer car especially if you can have one low mileage used for about the same price.

The contact patch depends on the diameter of the wheel but not on the width but up to a limit I think, so for example if for a 200wide 20” wheel it’s 50x180mm 900sqm if you use a 150 it will be like 60x145 so 870sqmm. So the larger wheel diameter helps grip and reduces rolling resistance but you still have better grip with wider and smaller tires

SDD525 when only Bridgestone makes the tires, the price isn’t so cheap, and it goes through tires too quick from what I hear.
I thought the wheels looked ridiculous...but compared to a model T, they seem less so. Maybe our current idea of normal is ridiculously oversized. Try driving a wide tired car in the snow. Narrow tires are actually better, and electric cars are more efficient with all-wheel drive (wish the i3 was).

I have 165/80R14 wheels on my diesel car....all that weight pushes on the narrow tires and gives a great grip...also water puddles are not a slightest problem... The thick sidewall makes the ride really cushioned (but also somewhat boaty steering) and cars suspension don't wear out as fast i bet...Also you can pretty much run the narrow tires until there is no thread left it still grips the road pretty well, i change mine when the cord is showing...super environmentally friendly=)

Most Highson yeah. but it is very reliable from 2 months of ownership onwards (you have to deal with minor repairs/annual service regularly; the only major issue is when your Vantage ends up making squeal noises in the same alleyway your 1997 Dodge Viper GTS breaks in) is and a great daily driver for practicality and many road trips, even good for a 6,522-mile long cross-country trip.

Three years later, the 2018 I3 absolutely is worth the $16,250 I paid for mine last month. I agree with you though, the windshield wiper lever is baffling, the design inelegant but I am able to overlook this owing to the 75% drop in daily operating expense compared to the vehicle it replaced. Certainly ironic that the I3 is actually proving to be an economy car for me.

Wow! Great choice of car... you could have bought virtually any other car and it would have been cheaper, had more features, and better handling. I guess you don't live where it snows, otherwise your range would be 50 miles in the winter.

Design aside, this car is a great deal right now in second hand. Their batteries fare really good even on the 10yr old ones. You get a low mileage with range extender that isn’t too old for 20K EUR in Germany. Kinda considering making my mom buy one xD It’s small and easy to park, not too expensive and tax free.
We got a 2014 with 6 months left on the 8 year warranty. The range was under 80% of what it got new so BMW replaced the entire pack under warranty for us. So we got a brand new battery last year and are set for a decade. BMW honored the warranty as second hand owners on a nearly 8 year old car. That means a lot to me.

I picked up a 2019 off lease for 1/2 off retail. Goes 150 miles on a charge. Great city car. Parks in the spots that most people avoid because they can't fit. Kids fits perfectly in the back.

My 2017 i3 with the Range Extender gives me a combined 200-300 mile range depending on the weather & the mode its on.. has 62,000 miles, got it for $16.9k

plasti dip is really cool, but the matte finish is hard to clean. Black works great on wheels because brake dust is black, but blue is going to look worse and worse over time.

In Norway, a country with extreme car and gas prices, strict parking regulations and tolls everywhere, this only costs $35,000. And, for electric cars, the tolls are free. And you can drive in bus lanes (which are also everywhere). And ferries are free (which are also everywhere). And public parking is free. And public charging is free. And electric cars don't (or hardly) depreciate. Try to guess why electric cars have more than 20 % of the total car sales in Norway.

I paid 20k for a less than 2 year old i3(2017 model with the 94ah battery) that had went 14,000miles. the first (and only) owner have taken some rediculous loss on that one. still have 3 years left on my warrenty and all the next services covered by the previous owner.

I bought a used 2017 with the Range Extender this year for my wife and I love it. I have a Tesla Model S, which is a dream. But I honestly also ADORE the i3. You have to own it to fully appreciate it. But the REX version is a must, if possible.
Fellow Rex owner, bought a 2017 used and it’s a phenomenal city vehicle. Mind you, we do have a Honda CR-V for long distance and more hauling capacity.
Today the REX was discontinued in EU, but they have the bigger 120 Ah battery now (37 kWh usable capacity) and they want to increase the capacity in future again.
I bought my ‘17 Rex September 2020, for $18k, and sold it August 2021 for $21k. 😀
I pretty much loved the car, esp, loved that it recharged for pennies, and I could get an additional 90 miles of range with 2 gallons of gas.
There wasn’t much I didn’t like, apart from the narrow tires, overall it was a great,comfortable car.
I only sold it so i could buy a much cheaper car, and lessen my debt. Of course,now that I’m buying gasoline again, I’m wondering about that.😅
I bought the EV only as I have a truck and 911 and use the i3 for driving to work and around the city, absolutely perfect for my needs 🎉
15:20 You have to pull it harder, it can be moved. It can either be inside the center console, in front of the console (like in the video) or in front of the console at an angle. In theory you could purchase extra ones and have a total of 6 cupholders in the car. Two could be mounted at an angle beside where the cup holder in the video is, one could be in the centre console and then you have the 3 fixed ones that cannot be moved (one up front, two between the rear seats)

@@TRACKSTARRR The A class interior is a tacky plasticky mess. The i3 uses extremely premium materials. Now a mazda interior, I would argue is far better. But the i3 has a modern and spacious interior with a good amount of style and functionality. Equipped properly, it is a good place to spend time.

I recomend einbach lowering springs and a 20 mm spacer at each corner, mine is great now and the only thing that wish was different is the narrowness of the wheels. Mostly lookswise
as an i3 owner, you forget that the range extender gets unlimited miles. The range extender gives you an additional 100km/hr per filling of a few liter of gasoline. You will outrange any other electric car without range extender.
I've driven many if these at my job and gotta tell ya, the traction control is the worst of any car I've driven

The other is, even if your battery is empty you can continue for as long as you want but adding a small amount of Gas every 100 km till you can charge the battery again. You do not constantly have to look out for a charging station as your battery gets low. You can continue driving as the Gas engine buffer-charges the battery.

I bought my BEV in August of 2018 for $16.2 k(paid owners remaining loan balance) with 18200 miles on it. Got some $$ back from big brother and it really made the car affordable. 3 most expensive things for me were putting in my 240 line and charger, the tires, and the replacement 12v battery, and that was quite the fiasco, no indicator to say it's low, but when it does go, it's like the entire car has a seizure.
Crazy they went through all that trouble for a second set of turn signals for a demographics that never uses them.
