    Is it just me, or all these crazy cheap cars are way more interesting to watch than Porsches, Lambos and Mercs?

      Yeah, due to the fact that they're very unusual and we don't see them much often makes them way more interesting than a Porsche, Lambo, etc. because we already know what those cars are all about.

      @@themindgarage8938 Back when I was around 16 years old, I had a racing mountain bike (for anyone who doesn't know, that basically just means that the frame and tires are slightly lighter & thinner than on a standard mountain bike that is made to be rugged at the sacrifice of being heavier). I rode that bike everywhere I needed to go in town, all the time, spring-autumn. Anyways, one summer (again, I was roughly 16 at the time) I rode it along a flat, hard-packed dirt running path/bike path that runs North/South for 20+ miles in my area, and I got up to 38.62 MPH (I had a digital speedometer hooked up to the front wheel, with the display mounted on the handlebars, and the display read out to two numbers on either side of the decimal point). Kept it up for a mile straight, no cruising, pedaling constantly. Best I've ever done on a bike, and I've always been proud of that achievement, despite the fact that pro bicycle racers can often do better in their races.
      Anyways, I wouldn't be able to do even 10 MPH for 100 feet nowadays, I'm too fat and out of shape, lol. I get really out of breath just walking up a couple flights of stairs - it's honestly pathetic how I've let myself get like this...

    I had a 2000 VehiCROSS - bought it off the showroom floor. I drove it for six years and put 100,000 miles on it. I loved it! A few corrections and notes : 1. The 18" tires started with the 2000 MY 2. You could have black and gray as the interior color instead of black and red. I know this because mine had the black and gray. 3. That must be an after-market manual case. Mine didn't have that. 4. If I recall, the passenger seat moves further forward than the driver's side so it really wasn't that bad getting in the back seats. Once there, there was plenty of legroom and the seats even reclined. However, that huge C-pillar sure made it feel claustrophobic. 5. I'm surprised you didn't mention the hood black-out piece. Jeep is doing the same thing on all their Trailhawk models - only theirs is a matte vinyl "stripe" where the VX actually had a plastic hood insert. I always considered this ahead of its time. 6. I believe a lot of the pieces were taken from the Rodeo parts bin, including the dashboard, the mirrors, outside door handles and various other things. Thanks for doing this review. It sure brought back a ton of great memories!

    • @ianj7528
      @ianj7528 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're definitely right about the interior dash being shared with the rodeo. That dashboard is also used in the AUV (Asian Utility Vehicle) version the Isuzu Hi-Lander XTRM, which was a very dependable family car. And until now Isuzu is still selling the car with exterior revisions plus they renamed it the Crosswind with some trims called Sportivo. But despite all the changes it can't hide the fact it is very old, especially the interior they've been the same since '99 with some changes in interior trim colors.
      Since we used to own Isuzus from that generation, I could say that they're not the best or the finest but definitely not the worst. They're very robust, dependable and fuel efficient if you get the diesel versions.

    On this one, he talks about the AC vent under the dash, that was pretty common in the 80's also. On the 80's imports the the passenger side door was the way to access the backseat, and the driver's seat was supposed to not be used to enter.
    I always wanted a VehiCROSS.

      This clown talking is clueless to Vehicross. He drives it like a grandmom and doesn’t show his viewers the reason why all the things he says is weird and why the wheels are so large. And notice his snarky backhanded compliments , which is typical of a biased reviewer. listen to how he is so triggered about the plastic cladding . He says the design is weird , he says the spare tire that’s covered is weird. lolol He focused on petty things. The remote has a hatch button but no hatch. lolol Oh my god the interior , what is crazy is he g f others their are optional colors. he even says HE DIESNT UNDERSTAND WHY THE ENGINE AND TIRES WETE DESIGNED THIS WAY. lolol he gets triggered cause CROSS is capitalized . over 75% into the video and he is blabbering. and this clown is an expert in car reviewes. oh jesus christ he’s bothered grammatical errors in the owners manual.
      He tells you about the review cam but later starts bitching he can’t see the rear . not fun to drive??? get off the street and jump hills, this dummy thinks it’s a street hot rod.
      he knows izusu won’t come after him, if it was a major car co. he grows a yellow spine

    I actually think it is a good idea to have bottom half of your SUV plastic covered. Brilliant - no worries about small scratches or den't which would lead to rusting or would just look bad. Scratched black plastic looks basically the same as not scratched one, so for off road vehicles ideal. More cars should have that, not less.

    • @The_sinner_Jim_Whitney
      @The_sinner_Jim_Whitney 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Boris P No, but the car rots out under the plastic before it's ever visible or before you can do anything about it, not to mention the cladding traps water/brine/salty slush and makes rot happen much faster.
      My old lifted AWD Astro van rotted to worthlessness before it was remotely visible, I'm sure I could've addressed the rust (if it even happened at all) before it was a major problem if it hadn't had the cladding, but when a piece of the cladding fell off due to rust the entirety of the rockers, doors, quarters, and fenders were trash. Parted it out at 104,000 miles, it would've probably run 250-300.

    • @ccllvn
      @ccllvn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney That sounds bad but honestly as long as you don't see the rust it's ok and the vehicle can still be sold as good. Probably lost money parting it out at 104k. I would have taken off the plastic, spray all the rust under it with bed liner and then get some chrome cleaner that they use for the old bumpers and windows trim and whatnot. Light acid on it, makes it all shiny again, then maybe spend a few hundred for new plastic cladding outside and I guarantee it looks good enough to some sucker to buy it at 104k mile value. Frame probably won't rust apart noticeably anytime soon and it'll take months until the rust is back out in the door sills etc...
      Used to do this all the time for my old boss and he took the junker cars to the wholesale auction where they only look if it starts, nobody can prove you did the work on it or even knew about it and you can sell it as a good car and don't have to sell at scrap value.

She worked @ the c’house for fun, her husband was a huge-time attorney who would stop by occasionally in his Porsche 959 (in a strange blue color, never saw such an example!). Oh and that “OK” sticker - my 1st car as a teen was a Subaru wagon passes down by my parents, it too had the “OK” sticker along w an anti-rust sticker that said “Rusty Jones” lol and had an image of a red-haired, mustached white dude...I guess he was Rusty

    Doug, *I'm disappointed you mentioned so little about the drivetrain, that's what made it special!*
    The story begins in 1997 when Isuzu, mostly known for making big industrial trucks and the occasional cool little sport compact, wanted a way to do the following: go racing, build a halo car (erm...truck), and try out some new technology. So they did that all at once by taking a mothballed concept from 1993 and putting it into production. That truck was the VehiCross and it's a fascinating bit of kit. The body panels are all pressed from inexpensive ceramic dies that are much cheaper to buy, but only last a few thousand runs before warping. This is ideal for short run cars as traditional cast iron dies are too expensive to create for low volume cars (in the case of the VX, 5,958 bodies were pressed before the dies wore out of spec). Borg Warner had a new computer controlled torque transmitting transfer case they wanted to try out, so the VX got it as well (dubbed Torque on Demand or TOD). Underneath, the VX employed aluminum bodied monotube dampers with remote pressure reservoirs, unheard of for a street car in the late 90s, much less a big truck. For racing, Isuzu decided to tackle the Production class in the Dakar Rally with the VX.
    The VX actually won two stages in class during the 1998 race, and later took the 1999 Australian Safari Rally in Production class.
    Despite all of this cutting edge 90s technology, the engine is the same tried and true 3.5L V6 Isuzu had been using in the Trooper since 1995. The V6 is a DOHC motor with variable valve timing making a modest 215 hp. This was enough to give a 0-60 in a touch under 10 seconds. The racing inspired dampers, stiff springs, and double wishbone front suspension give the VX surprisingly sprightly handling. You'll never mistake it for a sports car, but for an SUV it's very good. The TOD 4WD and clutch type LSD in the rear axle give plenty of traction both on and off road. For an SUV that needs to do everything, the VX ticks off pretty much every option one could ask for.

This was a Halo car slated for a limited production of 5000. It is getting more difficult to get parts..Not many in junkyards and many new parts have to be ordered from Japan which is an 8week wait unless you can find them used on ebay. Except for a radiator leak in 2016 (i replaced the radiator) and a couple of battery failures over the years, this vehivle has started EVERY day since Ive owned it My old 77 FJ40 Landcruiser is the only other car Ive owned with that record and I am 70 years old.

    Doug...I had one of these. To get in the back the passengers seat actually moves forward a lot more than the driver's seat. You forgot to mention many things about the car such as the rally style front shocks which had expansion reservoirs along with the independent front suspension and solid rear which is also a rally vehicle set up. So the car is meant more for rally style off road than for jeep style mudding or rock crawling. The suspension set up is the main reason why the car was a fair amount more expensive as it added considerably to the production cost.

      As former owner of such car, do you think it's possible to own it for daily use? Can I find necessary parts? Thanks!

    The 'horns' in the headlights are most likely to point out the front corners of the car, helps when in right spaces.

      I hate to admit that I know this, but without the horns on the headlights, the mirrors rattled like hell, they create a slipstream that the mirrors flow in and makes the mirrors hold still. Source: Family that was involved in the design process.

    This was a great take at a Rally/Baja/Dakar like truck. The claim to fame was the suspension system and the ladder frame. Looking up this stuff, you will see stock with coil-overs with remote reservoirs. It pretty much help usher in the toyota fj cruisers.

    Thanks for this great rundown! I am a bit disappointed that you didn’t force yourself into the back seat :) I’m curious as to whether or not the backseats recline (like the backseats in a Trooper).

    The headlight “horns” are to help the driver with judging the nose when cornering / parking. A lot of JDM cars have them!

    Touchscreens suck so much, I'd so much rather have ergonomic buttons for the climate control and stereo that are identifiable while driving so you don't have to look away from the road.

    • @Jesse__H

      lostinthemasses couldn't agree more. Buttons are straight up superior in this context.

      People complain about idiots using their smartphones while driving and auto manufacturers are straight-up turning all the controls in your vehicle into that same medium. I bet there's a huge correlation between accidents and "infotainment systems."

    • @900108Chale
      @900108Chale 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeap! Have thought of it for a while! Those "(dis) infotainment systems" are becoming quite dangerous...
      Especially those where you have to keep on changing from menu to menu.
      I mean just play with your simple basic traveling computer: Speed, millage, temp, etc. and if you miss one step, it totally confuses you...

      He didn't mention it, but one of the quirky features was that it also has automatic climate control (a rarity for the time like many other features it has) except that it's an analogue slider. I loved it.
