The one super car I’ve actually had the honor of sitting in. It was the coupe, it was cool inside, but getting in and out was tricky. Still, from a styling standpoint, the i8 is certainly striking and unique.

That exterior copper color is so impressive. The use of a speaker in the left-rear exhaust pipe is a bit gimmicky for me, but it's not a deal-breaker, either. Personally, I think this would be a lot of fun as a weekender vehicle. Great review, Doug.
The exhaust note thru the speaker is actually well done. Not some loud, obnoxious exhaust sounds that are very common these days. So loud it wakes up the neighbors when pulling into the subdivision. Lol

I actually would've preferred a supercharged V4 and a lot more batteries for immense acceleration and precision on the track. But it's undoubtable that it could've been so much more.
I like the fact that the BMW i8 still kept its butterfly doors on the roadster. The majority of exotics that have butterfly doors on the coupe model, will not keep them on the roadster model. Nice touch on BMW's Part!
I’ve had the pleasure of renting the i8 on two occasions. On one of those times my wife got an R8. I liked the i8 A LOT MORE. Better looks, cooler doors, more comfortable, better sound system, room for my two kids in the back, better cameras, cool heads up display, more intuitive controls and the sound of the i8 shifting is just a joy (even though it’s fake). The suspension feel changes from comfortable to sport mode. The speed feel was similar (the R8 was the V8, not the V10). The i8 is just an awesome car.

Nathan Lucas Why does everyone hate the i8? I also prefer a V8 instead of Prius technology and this car with a V8 would be amazing. But no one unterstand that BMW shows us the sports car of the future with the i8. It also was used to develop and test carbon fiber in cars. The 7 series also uses carbon fiber because of the development with the i8. The only thing this car was built for is to make our current cars better and planing for the future. After all the i8 is still a great car (even with speakers in the exhaust). It’s a good daily driver with excellent styling, driving fun and very good fuel economy, but all we do is hating about the 3 cylinders and the high price. Someone who can afford this car doesn’t care about the money and BMW even loses money by selling an i8, because the production and developing is so expensive. This car opens us a little window to the future, shows us how technology is like in some years and guarantees us that we will get „somehow cool“ cars. While other sporty brands have nothing to rely on in future (because they still only think about V8s and steel) BMW knows how it works. All that because of the i8.

Except the Audi and Lamborghini are way more expensive in a lot of places, because of emission tax. E.g. here in the Netherlands the i8 Roadster is listed on BMW's website for € 163,995 whereas the Audi R8 Spyder V10 is listed on Audi's website for €254,400. Used Huracáns are all in the €225,000 - €300,000 range. That's the big advantage the BMW i8 has: what you pay is for the actual car, not tax.

I have had 3 i8s own £4k mile Roadster. In 2021 Autotrader (UK main selling website used by dealers and private sellers) had 234 coupes and 67 Roadsters - in Feb 23 just 123 coupes and 20 ROADSTERS. when they get to 6 or 7 cars values skyrocket just like my SLS, Z8, CLS, 996.1 gt3 did....get one now while just over half retail as they'll be back at retail in 5-6 years and twice retail in 10-15 years !

This car is not made for enthusiasts or marketed towards enthusiasts. This car is made for the masses (well, the % of the "masses" that can afford it,) and the masses eat this sort of thing up. It looks "futuristic." The interior is luxurious and when you sit in it, you feel like you're sitting in a $200k car, which is exactly the point. No one who buys this car is buying it because they want $200k performance for their $200k. They're buying it because they want to "feel" like the money they spent on the car. It's for the pretentious celebrity or trust fund show off that feels the need to try to exude affluence. Yes, it's a 3 cyl, it has a speaker for an exhaust and most of all it's slow, but that doesn't matter to the person buying this car. Someone of wealth and elegance will buy a Rolls Royce or Mercedes. A car enthusiast with this kind of money would lease a top spec Camry as a daily, a weekender performance car (911, F-Type, TTRS, many options) and most likely a highly sought after "drift taxed" or "weeb taxed" project car like a rotary or vintage Nissan Z. The i8 Roadster accomplishes exactly what it was designed for, and accomplishes it well, not really even being different from the Coupe, yet simply being a "convertible" is enough for it to easily get the price tag on it from the people in the market for it.
So what youre saying is this i8 looks and feels ''cool'' enough for its intended target customer. While I don't condemn that, you can't deny it's not the only cool-looking, expensive-feeling car in the segment. Sadly, its competition can look just as expensive, and has performance and sound (sound is hugely important for the intended target customers) to match the looks; they also hold their value mutch better. Someone can show their affluence with any type of super car, the "masses" don't pay too much attention the price tag of sport cars. A Porsche is a Porsche to them, and the styling varies only a little between years, most won't notice.
Mason Scott I don’t want to start some internet argument, however I would like to point out that the sources of energy for the grid are many and varied and it heavily depends on where you live. The power could be coal, gasoline, natural gas, wood fire, nuclear etc. but the power can also come from hydro, wind, solar, tidal (as rare as that one is) There’s also the statistics for the US and Australia that something like 70% of EV owners have home solar so they are actually charging their car 100% cleanly. There is also a TH-cam video of some crazy dude charging a Tesla model s with a portable gas generator, and I believe that it worked out to be quite efficient MPG as the car charged as the fuel was burned. Anyway, I’m not saying you’re wrong, but the fact of the matter is that fuel burned at power stations is much more efficient than burned in a small engine and that the grid and charging options are many and varied. :)

I’ll take a Lexus lc500 which is 75k less and has a awesome engine note. ( I’m aware it’s slower but the i8 is a little faster for almost double price)
I love the fact that they took the radio control panel straight from my humble F30 3 series just for the sake of it. This car had little ceiling budget, so they really did that just for sentimental value, and that's why I love BMW so much

The one super car I’ve actually had the honor of sitting in. It was the coupe, it was cool inside, but getting in and out was tricky. Still, from a styling standpoint, the i8 is certainly striking and unique.
Not a supercar. My 90s 100% stock factory vehicle would smoke the i8.

That exterior copper color is so impressive. The use of a speaker in the left-rear exhaust pipe is a bit gimmicky for me, but it's not a deal-breaker, either. Personally, I think this would be a lot of fun as a weekender vehicle. Great review, Doug.
The exhaust note thru the speaker is actually well done. Not some loud, obnoxious exhaust sounds that are very common these days. So loud it wakes up the neighbors when pulling into the subdivision. Lol

I've seen a fair few around my small town for some reason and they look very striking.
I’ve had the pleasure of renting the i8 on two occasions. On one of those times my wife got an R8. I liked the i8 A LOT MORE. Better looks, cooler doors, more comfortable, better sound system, room for my two kids in the back, better cameras, cool heads up display, more intuitive controls and the sound of the i8 shifting is just a joy (even though it’s fake). The suspension feel changes from comfortable to sport mode. The speed feel was similar (the R8 was the V8, not the V10). The i8 is just an awesome car.
Looks are the only really good thing about this.

But no one unterstand that BMW shows us the sports car of the future with the i8. It also was used to develop and test carbon fiber in cars. The 7 series also uses carbon fiber because of the development with the i8. The only thing this car was built for is to make our current cars better and planing for the future. After all the i8 is still a great car (even with speakers in the exhaust). It’s a good daily driver with excellent styling, driving fun and very good fuel economy, but all we do is hating about the 3 cylinders and the high price. Someone who can afford this car doesn’t care about the money and BMW even loses money by selling an i8, because the production and developing is so expensive. This car opens us a little window to the future, shows us how technology is like in some years and guarantees us that we will get „somehow cool“ cars. While other sporty brands have nothing to rely on in future (because they still only think about V8s and steel) BMW knows how it works. All that because of the i8.

Except the Audi and Lamborghini are way more expensive in a lot of places, because of emission tax. E.g. here in the Netherlands the i8 Roadster is listed on BMW's website for € 163,995 whereas the Audi R8 Spyder V10 is listed on Audi's website for €254,400. Used Huracáns are all in the €225,000 - €300,000 range.
That's the big advantage the BMW i8 has: what you pay is for the actual car, not tax.

I have had 3 i8s own £4k mile Roadster. In 2021 Autotrader (UK main selling website used by dealers and private sellers) had 234 coupes and 67 Roadsters - in Feb 23 just 123 coupes and 20 ROADSTERS. when they get to 6 or 7 cars values skyrocket just like my SLS, Z8, CLS, 996.1 gt3 did....get one now while just over half retail as they'll be back at retail in 5-6 years and twice retail in 10-15 years !

See, no one in the comments is going to like this car, because a large majority of Doug's viewers are car enthusiasts, or have at least some interest in cars in some way. This car is not made for enthusiasts or marketed towards enthusiasts. This car is made for the masses (well, the % of the "masses" that can afford it,) and the masses eat this sort of thing up. It looks "futuristic." The interior is luxurious and when you sit in it, you feel like you're sitting in a $200k car, which is exactly the point. No one who buys this car is buying it because they want $200k performance for their $200k. They're buying it because they want to "feel" like the money they spent on the car. It's for the pretentious celebrity or trust fund show off that feels the need to try to exude affluence. Yes, it's a 3 cyl, it has a speaker for an exhaust and most of all it's slow, but that doesn't matter to the person buying this car. Someone of wealth and elegance will buy a Rolls Royce or Mercedes. A car enthusiast with this kind of money would lease a top spec Camry as a daily, a weekender performance car (911, F-Type, TTRS, many options) and most likely a highly sought after "drift taxed" or "weeb taxed" project car like a rotary or vintage Nissan Z. The i8 Roadster accomplishes exactly what it was designed for, and accomplishes it well, not really even being different from the Coupe, yet simply being a "convertible" is enough for it to easily get the price tag on it from the people in the market for it.

Mason Scott I don’t want to start some internet argument, however I would like to point out that the sources of energy for the grid are many and varied and it heavily depends on where you live.
The power could be coal, gasoline, natural gas, wood fire, nuclear etc.
but the power can also come from hydro, wind, solar, tidal (as rare as that one is)
There’s also the statistics for the US and Australia that something like 70% of EV owners have home solar so they are actually charging their car 100% cleanly.
There is also a TH-cam video of some crazy dude charging a Tesla model s with a portable gas generator, and I believe that it worked out to be quite efficient MPG as the car charged as the fuel was burned.
Anyway, I’m not saying you’re wrong, but the fact of the matter is that fuel burned at power stations is much more efficient than burned in a small engine and that the grid and charging options are many and varied. :)
